jb, One thought on your safety concerns. My LaScalas have the crossover that allows you to separate the bass/upper sections by cutting a couple of red wires. That is the only thing I can think of that would be an issue, plus it allows one to safely run different brands of amps without any problems.

From your description of the damaged woofer, I would guess that there is no harm done. I have seen many, many tweeters where somebody just had to touch to the point that the dust cap was caved in. They worked just fine too. Woofers are more hardy.

For me it has always been difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. In the electronics industry it seems hard to recognize the really good stuff at a reasonable price vs the high priced stuff. Some of the high money goes to name only while some new company building a good value for the money has a hard time "making the grade". Even if I had money to burn I do not believe I would just automatically buy the highest priced thingey around just for bragging rights.

I posted this in another thread and later thought it would be better if I made it a topic instead. I have a pair of RCF N481 drivers. They came on a horn that looks like the CE horn described by D. B. Keele, Jr in his presentation to 51st Convention of the Audio Engineering Society, 1975 ("What's so sacred about exponential horns?"). I also have a pair of Emilar ECH 175-16B drivers. Is anyone familiar with the merits of these two drivers and/or the CE horns for home HI-FI? Thanks

I do not understand you guys at all. If the Klipsch 400 Hz horn leaves a hole between itself and the bass horn, then the Altec 500 Hz horn surely leaves a BIGGER hole! Klipsch started out at 500 and went to the 400 in order to try and fill that hole. You guys like the Sound of Silence? or What?

Don't forget That your hearing becomes more linear at louder volumes (up to a point)!!!!

You and go all tubes on multi-channel. Perhaps not with the decoder but certainly with everything else in the chain.

travisc, I believe the circuit from PWK is a simple sum of left/right to create the center. I am doing the very thing you asked about. Using my Home Theater receiver and setting the surrounds OFF. It also has a setting for multi-channel stereo which really sounds nice. The decoders in the receiver know how to react to the hardware setup you give it. For example, Large vs Small for center and mains creates different handling of the bass depending on which set of parameters you entered. I believe you are on the right track in what you are doing. I really like my three-channel setup.

If you have the kind that switches multiple speakers to one amp, be careful because you could inadvertently tie both amps directly together. Hopefully they won't step on each other. Also even if one is turned off, the switch must also be off or else the live amp is also being loaded by the unpowered one. Just something to think about. I don't know what kind of Niles box you have but I just described the situation with mine.

I think he might also be saying they "ain't" so bad either. I have the dreaded AK-2 in my Khorns and for the life of me can't find anything to gripe about with them.

i, Just go to Kmart and get a pair of those entry rugs, the kind with the rubber backing. 30 inches wide will do fine. Put it upside down under the Khorn. Works like a champ. No cutting. The back simply curls up near the wall into the horn. Of course you could cut the back corners off but I don't see any reason to do that. Worked for me.

Amy, If we are Klipsch WOM, does that qualify us for a company discount (hint, hint) ?? One thing about all this. I would be proud to be a WOM for Klipsch, at least the Klipsch of my past experiences.

Yep, It is hard to imagine that PWK didn't do something like that and he eventually did have the tools to measure what was coming out.

It seems to me that to get "true" answers to all these points/counter-points is to build a Khorn such that the motorboard can be altered by the insertion of a reducer board like they had in speakers when I was a youngster. Then measure, measure, and measure some more. I would not be surprised if PWK didn't do that himself. To heck with theory when you have the tools to build and measure.

The rear channels are dedicated to surround information, not the main. The center is really a part of the main but is often used for the dialog part of movies. Unless the decoder removes a good portion of the L/R signals from the center and the center from the L/R, things just get muddier. In short, 2-channel and multi-channel are different beasts, neither of which is without problems. I believe the multi-channel signal really wants to be coded and recorded as multi from the source. I mean by that the forcing of two channels into 3 or 5 does not do justice to the original. The Home Theater section of this forum is dedicated to multi-channel issues. This is just my opinion. I used to love 2-channel. Now I love 3-channel. Never cared much for the surround effects. I also use a sub off the mains (L/R). Why should one assume that the jamming of multi-channel sound into just two is superior to the original? Of course, the recorded source must be constructed correctly or else your just doing the same type of injustice that the 2-channel introduced. I do not believe the industry in general has ever done well in recorded music. Having said that, I must add that some of my records sound just wonderful. Ditto on my CDs. For example, how can a violin sound as loud as a kettle drum. I have many albums were that situation actually exists. Remember what I said earlier. This is my opinion, which I do NOT expect everybody to accept.

yea, It is hard to accept that those same sine waves that accompanied the train when it hit the living room are the same ones that come from a sweet sounding pipe organ! Like the cook said, "it's all in the receipe".

What I love about this forum is that --- if your not careful you'll end up learning something. I try not to be too careful!

I use area rugs from Kmart, the non-skid type. Put them under the Khorns with the rubber side up so I can move them around and the Khorn won't slide off. The hardwood floor doesn't get a scratch. Works like a champ. The Khorns don't even know they are there. Can just see them under front edge of the Khorn (could have put them further back, but was not unhappy seeing them).
