  1. Yep. This! Last year we thought we were approaching our local Newspaper to put an ad on their website, only to find the sales guy worked for a company partnering with the Newspaper to track cellphone movement to the point we could actually target folks who walked in our competitors doors if we wanted to! 😮 It kinda freaked me out but it was more expensive than we wanted to spend but the options were endless. Everything from ads on popular sites, facebook, national magazines, targeting those same people who went to nearby establishments, football games, and yes, competitors...{Note: I originally posted this in a comment on the Internet thread several weeks ago but took it down.}
  2. Yeah. I realize we aren't using the traditional bottles but these had significant meaning. I was taking care of my mom on New Years 2000 and my wife (girlfriend at the time) came to visit and we had those 2 bottles of champagne. Mom died shortly after but happy she made it through the millennium so we had to do something special with them.... On a lighter note, since that time they invented dripless candles which I didn't figure out for about 5 years. 🙄
  3. Fwiw, I play alot if DVD-As, SACDs, Blurays and watch alot of YouTube and I really like my UBP-800. All of it over HDMI.
  4. He was head of the Jesus movement in Jerusalem until he was killed in 62CE (almost 30 years). The Apostolic Fathers and Josephus mentions him as being Jesus' brother. Paul does so as well, while Professor Eisenman thinks the writer of Acts (and the Gospels) plays him down and rewrites others in his place Eisenman is a renowned Dead Sea Scrolls scholar and weaves quite the stories including James may have been "The Teacher of Righteousness" found in that literature, but I'm not convinced (yet) because of carbon dating and other scholars not thinkin' so...The thing I've learned most out of his books is how diverse Judaism was at the time Rome destroyed the Temple and what was allowed to remain considering the Pax Romana afterward...
  5. @RealMarkDeneen Ha! I've gone a slightly different historical route. I'm on the last 100 pages of a 900+ page book by Dr Robert Eisenman, "James the Brother of Jesus" which isn't religious but more of a historical look at 2nd Temple Judaism to right after 70 CE when the temple was destroyed. It's taken me the better part of half a year to read while I research the historicity of his sources. {Note: I started with my copy of Josephus but found it was easier to research on the internet. ;)}
  6. If this is the ultimate question, I think it's worth saving and we all should do our part to make it better and be aware of what Mark's worried about. After all, we are not guppies! 🤓
  7. Maybe so, but here is the part of my quote you left out: And I agree with some of your premise, but: I contend it's more of a symbiotic relationship and your end game above is more hyperbole than actually what's going to transpire, imo...Anyway, good conversation but I don't have anything else to add that wouldn't mirror what I've already posted.
  8. Several years ago you made a comment when I mentioned we could actually put our mind in that of the POTUSA and your reply was none of us could because we didn't have what they had (I assumed good and bad). I disagreed and feel "DNA" has nothing to do with it unless you're referencing specific dynasties. {Note: I don't think everyone has an equal chance at "greatness," but...} I agree with Jeff on this point. The internet is a tool that has made me more knowledgeable and productive (along with tremendous entertainment value). No, I'm still not as great as I wanna be but I appreciate my quality of life and recognize the "evils" of the internet and feel/hope The majority of us help curb the negatives that you see and made me aware of. Again, I do look towards government and the masses to initiate change where it needs to be to keep the internet a positive force.
  9. Only if the salesman sold your dad two Rolexes before he came in to set the watch.
  10. Who is "we?" Us, individually? I used to think it was effective communication between Human Beings stressing the Golden Rule. Kinda like the opening of John's Gospel with "the Word" being actual communication. Well...Unless you believe in God (and there being an actual supreme deity) I don't see a solution but still think the focus on the Golden Rule (Treat others like you want to be treated) is the only solution and gotta admit it ain't likely to happen with all of the obstacles. {Note: I don't say this to be religious but an overall goal for humanity. All religions or nonreligious folks could benefit from this sentiment, imo}
  11. I'd think RF-7s and RC-7 would be close to that price and hard to beat for a front Home Theater soundstage...That's what I've enjoyed for over 2 decades and listening again now,
  12. Fwiw, it seemed he was a nice guy but also dished out some carrion of his own.
  13. I think, yeah. Folks are debating the consequences and ramifications in public and on a governmental level. Like you said, most are benefiting and I suggest when the tide turns so will public opinion--Just like slavery, but the machine can be fixed whereas slaves were given their freedom to end it.
  14. Okay. For you it's analogous, but for me not so much. The difference is I see slaves as Human Beings, while the internet is more of a conduit for information. With the latter I think there can be more common sense fixes when they become a problem. Fwiw, I used Facebook and how they handled falsehoods as an example. Those that didn't care started their own Social Media companies and they aren't doing too well. Dunno, but I'm an optimist.
  15. Fwiw, I think equating slavery with the internet is totally off base and with the demise of traditional media of the 1970s where are you suggesting people get their News and information? Like I said, I thi k that ship has already sailed. The real question is how are we going to put limits on it?
  16. Fwiw, I think the biggest thing folks can glean from your picture is the benefit of toeing in your speakers to the MLP and having the tweeters at near the same level. Good job!
  17. Getting back to the original question-- don't see it just "dying off" and the scope above seems too limited. Online shopping definitely has its advantages and along with broadcast TV, Magazines and Newspapers have also migrated to the internet...Fwiw, I can't see it just dying off unless it's replaced by something else and I can't imagine what that is. Oh yeah, this. 🤓 As of now I get Mark's and John's point about free market entities controlling/benefiting from this but I'm not sure how much we want government involved...I really don't know.
  18. I realize Mark is going deeper than the "News" we are getting in the Information Age we are living in because of the internet. I agree the government isn't involved with the internet, per se, but News organizations outside of it still have to consider their content both in and off this vehicle to spread information. The Courts and Congress is where the intersection of all of this communication is either presented, exposed or letigated, imo. My point is that in the last few weeks I've watched a trial involving an Internet media entity spreading lies about a particular event in which they are no longer allowed on Social Media because that WAS their modus operandi. There are also transcripts and televised hearings on a myriad of topics over the years which those that don't trust media sources can keep up with and form an opinion... Honestly, I think a bigger problem with the internet (or specifically Social Media) is that too many people use sources to fabricate their own "Truth" and not use the assets described above to learn actual facts presented in respected/official venues outside the Internet. 🤔 That's my take over morning coffee.☕
  19. I've never heard that term before and had to Google it. 😁 Interesting concept and I'll do more research...That said, I have questioned *everything* for several decades and am always debating folks on important topics and willing to change my mind so thanks for bringing this to my attention. Fwiw, I don't purchase alot of things online and always cross-reference my sources for news and current events. That said, Travel videos on YouTube are AWESOME and definitely are having a positive influence on me.
  20. I consider the actual sources involved and/or where the info is coming from. Court documents, transcripts, and reports going through a known editorial process...Of course, there are speculative things that sometimes take time to come to fruition. Otoh, recognizing the difference between opinion, facts and entities with more historically reliable material goes a long way in my book. {Note: We also have access to real-time events thanks to the internet. } One thing that Facebook did to clean up its act was to put an "i" link to see where the Information was coming from.
  21. My guess both, but I don't purposefully engage or give reviews. On Facebook I'm real surprised I don't get many ads and unwanted content. YouTube is my goto entertainment source and I watch mostly Travel videos along with educational religious material--that is where I see most of the target ads including from Klipsch. Dunno but I don't pay for it. I'm pretty sure Google and Facebook. Again, both but within my comfort level and pleasure. For me? Neither. Fwiw, I joined Facebook to discuss politics and sadly found others don't. One of the evidently changed dynamics there is they no longer are a majority of American's prime "News" sources whereas 6 years ago they seemed to be. That's my take... Btw, I also like Google Maps for a myriad of reasons but realize some entity is tracking me.
  22. I can dig it. That's why I always say pay attention to the actual players and official sources and not the pundits or internet opinion. I also think/stated those that have to abide by FCC Regulations and have fact-checking editors have more credibility. Otoh, if they are always in court for promoting falsehoods those need to be avoided.
  23. I dunno about that. Actual "facts" are facts in the Information Age we live in. I also trust sources that actually have responsible Editors involved and have to abide with FCC Regulations. I admit there are problems with algorithms that are troublesome, but as I mentioned above they are trying to make changes on some platforms. As of now these are free market platforms although I do see areas where it may be prudent for government intervention.
