  1. Yea I agree with LP. Build a dolly to cart the speakers around on and lift them off for use. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  2. I am pretty sure I have a old "Speaker Builder" with a pretty good exploded (?) view and some general info. If you want me to dig it out let me know. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  3. I run LSI's in a movie theatre which also does some live performances. We run makie 1400i amps ( I believe the amps are rated at 225 per channel ). If the LED's on the front panel are telling, the amps rarely get out of idle. I do not believe you need anywhere near the power of the Crowns you have. We just had a live performance at the theatre and I am sure the SPL were at times well into the upper 90's, the amps were not being driven hard at all. These are effiecent speakers, when we opened the theatre we had one LSI and a old Dynaco ST 120 ( 60 watts ) and never ran into problems with sound pressure levels. The LSI's we have are split " B " cabinets with black fiberglass and aluminum edging. They have handles. The input via banana jacks is into the mid/ high cabinet where the crossover is with an output to the low freq cabinet and they are able to be bi- amped. They are rated at 200 watts. The only gripe I have with the speakers is I have to tear the whole mid/ high cabinet apart to wrap the horns with with moretite! Not an easy job with these cabinets. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  4. I have never been able to afford new hi end gear. I have always bought hi end gear used. Audio Research, Bryston, LaSala's, Heresy's, Dynaudio, AR- LST's, Audio by VanAlstine, Tascam and so on. I think I have around $3000.00 in my system but it is all used gear. I don't know what it would have cost if I bought it all new. I do think used is the only way to go. If the equipment is made by a quality company there really is no worry about problems with it. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  5. Am I right in thinking that it was Dual that never put a bottom cover on their turntables? Didn't that cause some harmonics problem or rumble in the tables? That was a long time back and I am a little hazy about it now. I just gave a friend and old Thornes td125 with sme tone arm that has been sitting in my closet for ten years. I do think vinyl sounds wonderful, but kids and the ease of cd's and mp3's have kind of won out for the time being . ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  6. cc1091 wrote " I would reccommend Hi-Fi Sound in downtown Minneapolis for sales staff alone. Unfortunately, they don't have Klipsch speakers either (and owner says,"I wouldn't allow a Klipsch speaker in the store.")." Still somewhat snooty, but tolerable. " I was at HI- Fi with a friend to lives, eats and sleeps Klipsch. I was buying a used Thornes turntable when the salesman asked me what speakers I had. I told him Klipsch Heresy's. The salesman told me I could do much better than that and at that point I thought world war III was about to break out! My friend and the sales guy were in a heated angry battle about Klipsch. I honestly thought fists were going to fly! I tried to get my friend to just leave, but no use. I went and put my turntable in my car and had a smoke and waited for my friend outside. So, if you go to Hi- Fi, leave the Klipsch name at home. They are a good store and I would say they are passionate about stereo gear! ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  7. Obsidian- Dump Audio King and drive to Richfield and visit Audio Perfection instead. Granted they don't carry Klipsch, but they have real audiophile gear for real audiophiles! You could also go to Minnetonke to Great Plains. Audio King is a mid- fi Best Buy. Go somewhere who knows Klipsch- I don't know where that is, but know it's not Audio King. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  8. Take a good look at QSC. Bang for the buck is hard to beat ( USA series ). We have used plenty of these for movie theatre installs and they have almost zero problems. I have a Bryston and am happy with it. I would stay away from AB amps. I personally do not like the sound of Crown, but others will disagree with me. There is nothing wrong with pro gear for home use. If you find a good quality amp at a good price go for it. Oh- Look at Mackie also. Very good amps, good company. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  9. Sand and Latex paint sounds to me as a attempt to mimmic the old Altec cement filled horns. I also think they did it with tar and something else maybe asbestoes? Anyways, I think rope caulk would be the way to go. Latex probally won't do squat for deadening the horn. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  10. I am in need of a good ( if there is such a thing ) cheap dvd player on the market. I am faced with either a new vhs deck that the 1 yr old and the 3 yr old can destroy or going with a dvd. We would be looking at very limited hours of use- 5 hours a week or less. I read at one time that a brand called Apex was pretty good for a cheap, cheap player. Anyone have any recommendations? ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  11. If your looking for just a basic open rack look at Markertek http://www.markertek.com/MTStore/Store.cfm?Idx=racks&main=product.cfm?BaseItem=RK-2 There is also good quality rack cabinets there too. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways? 12. Al, The 8 cell horns are 805's. So it looks like my bounty consists of 1 pair of 805 horns, 1005 horns and some oddball fiberglass horns with no cells and are smaller in size. For drivers I have a pair of 288b's, one ( maybe 2 ) pairs of 288c's and a pair of 290 drivers. I have a pair of A- 7 cabinets with stock LF drivers also. The cabinets are " newer " gray cabinets. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  13. Al, Is that the 8 cell horn? If so yes. I know I have a pair of 10 cell. I will go look ( means it will probally be buried amongst lots of other stuff up in the clothes closet ) at get back to you in a day or so. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  14. cc1091- " I wish I could help you out, but my small place doesn't even allow for me to have a shop so I can build some interesting speaker variations. " Thats my problem in a nut shell. I have a bad habit of collecting stuff and no room to keep it. I have so many speakers that friends are using I think if I were to ask for all of it back I could fill an 18 wheeler. I just can't pass up $25.00 AR 3's or the like at garage sales. There has to be some type of 12 step program for the likes of me out there! ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  15. Check out Positive Feedback. Informative and a blast to read and they always have poor man mods. I used to get it regularly but have lapsed in picking it up lately and I do miss it. You will have a fun time with the articles. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  16. Any forum members in the Twin Cities want to play around with some old Altec horns that I have? I would be willing to LOAN some of this gear out if you want to experiment with it. I have around 3 or 4 pairs of horns/ drivers and space is getting limited. So this is away I can keep the wife out of my hair and still hold onto it. Let me know. Offer is open to members of this forum only. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  17. boomer9911- Hey I have a 2235B. I brought it up to work and using it there. I have some Boston Acoustic theatre surrounds ( 8" woofer and tweeter ) hooked up to it. It's an OK setup but not hi- end by any means. Good enough for the work place though.
  18. I can't recommend VanAlstine gear and upgrades enough! Bang for the buck you can get into truely Hi- Fi gear that will rival gear far more expensive. Really, everyone should check them out!
  19. As a kid back in the '70's I remember a local audio store ( Schaak electronics ) selling them. Boy I loved those speakers! I think they had the 3's and also something called the "3 Lowboy". The later was shorter but with the same drive components and cabinet volume. I personally whould like them if for no other reason than to compare them with my memory of them. As with some other vintage gear though, you normally wish that stuff sounded as good as you remembered!
  20. As far as books go check out TAB's book on acoustics I think it was called " The master handbook on acoustics " Very good publication. I have a couple of old stereo books. One is " the practicle handbook of stereo and hi- fi " written in 1973. The other is called " High fidelity systems " by Roy Allison ( Acoustic Research ) written in 1962. Pretty outdated stuff by todays standards but fun to look at all the old gear.
  21. I guess my Audio Research SP3A preamp would be considered vintage. My Dynaco gear has all been modified by VanAlstine so I guess that would'nt qualify. My thinking is a quality piece of gear from whatever era is still quality today, but as always technology has only improved products. I have always thought the old Dynaco gear was/ is terrific. As good today as any mid- fi stuff on the market, imho. I still drool everytime I see a Dynaco ST-400 on e- bay! How I would love to have one.
  22. bensilb- Hmm, you might ahave a point there. I think I would have to suffer photos/ descriptions of their gear- can you see it- " I cut the front out of one of my Bose cubes and mounted an Altec 511 horn in there. " Although I am still interested in how they stuff 7 miles of " transmission line " in one of them apewstomass thingys
  23. I got it! Either I am made " crazy " in 24 hours or I am registering at the Bose site!
  24. BobG- Thankyou! I now have hope in finding some Fortes, Cornwalls. I hope I will be able to offer some speakers also ( my Heresy's that a friend has been using for quite awhile ). Thanks again!
  25. Boy, I too am tired of the cool newbie tittle I am ready to protest! I encourage all other " newbie's " to join me! Although I have'nt figured out how one would protest on a BB. I don't think fasting would really be the right protest, nor dousing my/ ourselves with gas would be appropriate either. I am open to suggestions. How about just letting us have " newbie " for the first 10 and then graduate us after that?
