  1. Stormin, If I understand what you are saying, the impeadence dips at certain frequencies causing the amp to see a lower load(resitance). At the lower impeadence or ohms the amplifier generates a higher wattage output. Believing the Woofer will eat up most of the power, the increased wattage provides more bass energy?
  2. Stormin, Thanks for the insight. What type of amp do you currently use with your Chorus IIs? Other than wattage, what should one look for in upgrading to a amplifier vs receiver? Does your bass come alive at lower volumes with your amp or does the volume need to be pushed?
  3. Thanks for the feed back. I do have children, 6 &10, and a dog in the future. Grills might be the option if I keep them. I have been comparing them with my KLF 20s and am a little surprised that them seem to image wider than the 20s. I am not used to hearing the instruments come from beyond the outer edge of the speakers. Nice! The base also surprises me. I expected more from the 15 and passive radiator. I have been as close as 6" to the wall and as far as 18". 18 seems closest to the sweet spot so far. The 20 bass wise do keep up and my 10s surpass them. I am running them in 2 ch with a Marantz 8500 rated at 125 per. Is my reciever to shy to push the woofers? Unfortanatly the 10s are shy on the mids. To go a little of subject, How does the base from Cornwalls compare to the Chorus IIs?
  4. I have used the 1.1s (4) With a Velodyne CHT 15 with nice results. The sub was an after thought but was much needed. The 1.1s do sound nice but carry no bottom end. I currently have a set of 1.1s in my daughters room and It works for the both of us on the Disney Channel, etc. She loves telling her friends of a real stereo in her "master suite" and I don't have to hear it! egends
  5. Thanks for the info Bill. I have started with them toed in so that on corner is 9" and the other back corner if 12". I sit about 14' away. Based on your setup I will experiment a little further away.
  6. Hello all. Today I picked up a very nice pair of Chorus IIs for $325. They have a date on the stickers of 6/20/90. It seemed too good to pass up even though I am not really in the market. I have a couple of questions about them so hopfully the experts can weigh in. What is the recomended distance away from the wall for a speaker with a passive radiator? Has anyone put a protective grill on the passive radiator? (why?/why not?) With a build date of 1990, what is the expected life expectancy of the factory xover? Thank you and Happy New Year!
  7. My kids picked up U2's Rattle and Hum for me on DVD. I will play it this weekend!
  8. Hello all. I have been condsidering Bob Crites titanium diaphram upgrade for my KLF series. All of the reviews that I have read are very positive. I do have a questions though. This diaphram replaces the existing one in approx 20 different tweeters. How can one diaphram do this? Are all of the existing diaphrams basically the same and just the rest of the tweeter assembly hold the differences in the current stock configs? Are there any concerns about different sensitivity from tweeter to tweeter? Thanks for the education!
  9. Years ago I had picked up a set of the 10.5s at the local Sound Advice. They needed some tlc and a new horn that Klipsch covered under warranty. I ended up completing the ensemble with the C5 center and the S5 surrounds. It was my first adventure with Klipsch. I really liked the sound. Good output after living with NHTs for a while and they imaged close to the NHTs. The 10.5s got a great review from Brent Butterworth? from one of the stereo mags of the day. He compared the sound stage to that of a bi-polar such as a Def Tech. All I say is that I liked them a lot until I got bit by the upgrade bug. Mine were sold to a friend who still cranks hard on them today.
  10. Jim, I am putting together a KLF-20 center channel am in need of 2 woofers. If you're selling I would like to buy. Thanks Mike
  11. I would figure that with the woofers being cut of at a much lower freq and with dual ports for the 20s vs a single for the 10s, it should not lag behind in the bass department. I am thinking that it might just be that the 20 might just run "hotter" in the mids and highs so that maybe the bass level is justed tuned to a different (lesser)output at any particular volume than the 10s. But I will say I just don't feel it is volume, I feel it is also presence and impact. The bass on the 10s sounds more balanced to the high end and more energetic or available, almost more punch over boom. Based on the 20s rep I feel crazy leaning towards keeping the 10s, but I need to trust my own ears and maybe not drink anymore Kool Aid. Also it may also be a pride/ego thing to say the apparent lesser of the two is more to my liking. I will certainly sleep on this one!
  12. I wish that I could A/B stock 20s and 20s with the upgraded crossover. I have read many posts and although most say the new xover is a great upgrade, others say not so much. I could put a couple of hundred into the 20s and still not have the 10s bass. Almost everyone seems to think that Bob Crites new tweeter is the most bang for the buck so I could just upgrade the tweets on the 10s. That sounds like the only way to know for sure you will enjoy your money spent. If others care to way in, please do!
  13. Hello all. I am in the process of down sizing my life and am ready to let a pair of speakers go. I am going back and forth between the KLF-20(stock) and the KLF-10(upgraded crossover similar to Bob Crites). The reciever is a Marantz 8500 and my center is a KLF-10 modified for horizontal placement. No sub. As I A/B the speakers the 20s have a slightly better presence? to them, mabey more air?. The 10s have a much better low end even a lower volumes. I am surprised at this since the 20s woofers are crossed over at a much lower frequency and would think it would benifit the bass. It is quite noticable and I am wondering if it is due to the crossover upgrade, primarially the low pass inductor. My question is for anybody who has upgraded their crossover with a Bob Crites style, what is the impact on the lower end. Thanks for the help!
  14. I saw these advertised today. At that price I would move quick. The center you will want is the KSP-C6. Always available on Ebay and probably around here. I heard the 300s and 400s back a few years at a Sound Advise. They sounded great but I went with the KLF series instead. Good Luck.
  15. With the addition of the center channel, the dialog is so much clearer. I think I have heard that something like 90% of the movie goes thru the center. I could easily live without the rears. Alot of the used recievers that you can pick up have surround effects programs that do not use rears. I can't say how good they are, but on a budget?
  16. I would look into the DIY route. I have done suround repairs with both foam and rubber surround with great success. The local shop that I purchase my parts form is South Florida Speaker Repair. The last pair that I did for a friend were on a pair of Boston Acoustics. the total cost was less than $20(both speakers) including the glue. Fixed in a day including drying and reassembly. If the rest of the surround is in good condition and you are not a perfectionest, you could try some RTV/silicon. It glues it together but does not harden so natural movement is still there. Probably a $2 fix. Good Luck
  17. I use a set of KLF-10s that were picked up local and cheap. Reinforced the cabinets and built wheeled carts for them so I can move them around the garage or into the driveway. Powered by an older Pioneer @ 150w per channel and a laser disc player for a source. Not much to look at but great for the garage.
  18. I too just came across this thread. Continued prayers to come Amy's way. Without a doubt.....Our God is an awesome God!
  19. Just an update on my KT-LCR speakers. I have put my KSP-S6 surrounds into storage and am currently using 2 of the LCRs for surrounds with the legends. They use the same tweeter as the c7. I have been listening to alot of music and much prefer the LCRs over the S6s with my current apartment restrictions. They are great surrounds for movies also!
  20. I really like Marantz with the legend series. Different speaker thatn the reference for sure. I did a demo with the legend series and a Yamaha receiever and found it harsh to my ears. That was when the legends wear still available at dealers. Sony ES was smoother than Yamaha and Onkyo was smoother than sony. The marantz is smooth and detailed while feeling tighter in the bass.Purchased @ Accessories4less.com.
  21. I have a pair of 10's that I modified a couple years back. The outside of the cabinets were in good but not perfect condition.(black satin) With two children and a dog, I did not want to turn them into show pieces. I did upgrade parts in the crossover. I do not have the parts list anymore but can tell you what was replaced. I replaced all of the caps in the tweeter circuit as well as the resistor, and the coil in the woofer section. The replacment coil was rather large and is now mounted on the bottom of the cabinet. It is visible thru the port. While I did the crossover work, I made them bi-ampable. I used the existing terminal plate and just added two more connectors to it along with the reconfiguration of the internal wiring. I also applied several coats of a solution similar to "Dynamat" to the inside of the cabinet. This gives the inside of the cabinet a skin if you will. The last mod was to replace the existing foam inside the cabinet. I lined the entire back board with the waffle style foam that is frequently used ot pack products for shipping. The result was good. The sound did seem clearer to me. Clearer and tighter I would say. And of course the satisfaction of a neat project. Result # 2. After several years of listening to them the itch for more still remained. I have purchased a pair of 20's that I have yet to touch, but I will tell you that I do prefer the sound of stock 20's over my 10's. The 10's are currently in a bedroom but someday may become the rears in my ht. All of the parts for the mods came from Parts Express. Good luck and enjoy!

    .

I would also agree with keeping a good 2 channel system. I might take it one step further and keep a 3 channel set up. with your list of gear that could be done. I can easily do without the surrounds and do enjoy music as well as movies with the front 3. At a later date you can always add surrounds when ready. As far as selling the rest to invest in yourself-good for you! Most of your gear will depriciate over time but the investment in yourself grows for a life time and the values of that can effect your future generations. Good luck.
  23. One of my sources of sources of advise/info is the Klipsch tech support. I have talked with Steve on several ocasions, most recently as yesterday. His knowledge, patience, and insight has always been dead on for me. On one occasion I also talked with Michael. After reading many posts by him on this forum, and then having him answer the phone, I may have been a little star struck. Of course, he was of great help. Another source I use for help as well as supplies is South Fl Speaker Repair. A local smaller shop that does only speaker repair and consignment. They are always willing to talk speakers and if they can't help or do not have the part, they are quick to point you in another direction such as parts express. I do see that the vast majority of posts are answered and that a great service is offered, all on a voluntary basis. More companies should have forums like this one, that are open for topic, assitance, praise or......... Thanks for your feedback
  24. This forum does offer great information as well as humor and insight. It provides insperation to those of us whom like to tinker and a great place to share projects including ideas, success stories and praise to others for a job well done. The two biggest reasons I would see for not logging on is the freedom to search without logging on and the ability to enjoy the forum and not participate if you feel you have nothing to add. I have been discouraged myself from participating on several occcasions. Where I certainly would not put down anybodies topic, I am frequently amazed at some of the topics that carry on and on while others go unanswered on this forum. With the amount of knowledgeble people on this forum, when someones post looking for advise goes unanswered it supprises me. I wish that I knew as much as some of the forum members have forgotten, but that is just not the case. And yes, some of my posts have gone unanswered, and on others I have received excellent advise. I am also fortunate that I have others great sources of advise available to me, but none that carry the level of Klipsch expertise that is found here. All in all, a great forum, and one that I will log into now, whenever I visit.
