  1. What did you think of the instrumental Beatles tune, A Day in the Life? What did you think of the singer, Jimmy Hall? The Beatles song was outstanding. Not much a fan of theirs and it did take me a second or two to know what it was. Great cover. The singer did not do much for me. Not good or bad but I didn't feel he did the group any justice. I would go see that concert again at full price!
  2. This past Friday night he opened for ZZ Top in south FL. I had never even heard of him before I bought the tickets($10 on Groupon). Wow, I was impressed to say the least. I know being out on a beautiful night(outdoor amphitheater)with good friends and a cold one helped set the scene but I did stop to get a good listen. I did not know anything but his covers. Memorable were some SRV and Stevie Wonder. And yes, the woman on the bass was quite good as well. ZZ Top is now officially scratched off of the concert bucket list...
  3. I have grown a little tired of some of the clutter in my life and the audio rack is part of it. In addition to what I listed I also have a speaker selector switch for Z2 and Z3. There is an amp for the transducers under my couch. I am feeling more strongly towards two ch at the moment(subject to change). The AVR is a Marantz 8500, top of the line back in the DVI era and is only being used as a pre/pro now. I wish I could spin all of the discs from one player. I had hoped to eliminate the AVR, speaker switch, CD player and relocate the secondary amp. I can't say that I am ready for 2 ch because I do use the HT a fair amount but I do want to try it for a bit.
  4. Well I got the Oppo hooked up to the monitor and was able to view the volume control. It starts at zero(which is not quiet) and increases in increments of 5. At volume level 35 my ears could take no more. Overall opinion is that it sounds flat and lifeless. I can say that I am very surprised that my Marantz CD5004 sounded better through it's analogs out than the Oppo 93 thorugh it's analog out or it's digital allowing the Marantz SR8500 do the decoding. I am thinking that my not so golden ears actually heard a difference in DAC's... Well I guess a preamp is in order so plan B it is...
  5. I have a few of those floating around as well, I believe the 6dB version. Great suggestion, thank you!
  6. Well off to a bit of a rough start. No problem with the Oppo playing directly into the Emotiva but as far as the volume control goes it does not bring it down to even close to a zero volume level. I have it running stereo and have both chs at 0dB gain. The volume goes up fine but coming down while it is still very audible the last step is actually mute. I know that the Emo has a very high gain but I don't think this has anything to do with the issue. I am not currently hooked to a monitor so I can not see the volume level scale. I will be checking to make sure I have the latest software updates. Hmmm....
  7. Thanks again for the info, I will report back after soon experimentation. If it does work to my satisfaction I will most likely have some buyers remorse over not getting the 95 with the better dac. I currently have a dedicated CD player for those duties and am looking for a serious simplification.
  8. I have been looking into a device such as that as well. I have been looking at the Emotiva "Control Freak", link below. https://emotiva.com/products/electronics/control-freak Can you speaker of any major differences or advantages one unit may have over another?
  9. My XPA-5 has been dead quite on Chorus II's, Quartets and the KLF 10's, 20's and 30's.
  10. Thanks for the input. I believe I will be doing some experimentation this weekend.
  11. I am currently looking to simplify my system and go to 2.1 ch but still want to maintain the ability to have 5 ch for HT. My thought is a decent pre for 2 ch and running the center/surrounds direct from the Oppo to the amp(Emo XPA-5). I currently use the analog 5.1 out and would maintain that set up. The Oppo allows for individual ch volume levels as well as a master volume for the Analog out so on paper I can see this working. Has anybody done a setup like this before? All opinions welcome. Current set up: Marantz avr used as pre/pro only Marantz CD player Oppo BDP93 Emotiva XPA - 5 Klipsch KLF HSU sub
  12. Teaman does make a good point. I was able to get hold of a KLF-10 with the typical loose baffles and redid the motor board and It blows the C7 out of the water for match and output. It is just soooo big and it doesn't fit in my entertainment furniture. To see a picture go to Craigslist for West Palm Beach(south FL) and search Klipsch - KLF-10 home theater.
  13. Where did I put my man card?!!! Yes, they are heavy.
  14. I ran a KV-3 with a set of KG 4.5s, great match as well. They can be had for relatively cheap. I would expect that they would go good with the 5.5's too. I had a set of 2.5's ran stereo with a sub and was not moved by the combo. I did not try one as a center but would imagine by the design it would be suitable as well. I believe the only difference between the standard 2.5 and 2.5v is the video shielding that is not needed with today's TV's so that may include your options. If you want to try a KV-3 pm me as I have it still collection dust. I run the KLF-10s so I understand about the bass of those 10" woofers, sweet!
  15. Pretty happy with the Emo myself. I run the XPA-5 with KLF series that are crossover and tweeter updated. Mine is Gen 1, 4ish years old with nothing but great performance. Some details to consider between the XPA - 2,3 and 5. I talked with EMO rep Lonnie at an Axpona show and also read a thread he started on the Emo site about actual power out of a multi ch amp when only 2 ch.s are used. Typical of an A/B amp for them to put out more power with fewer ch.s used. XPA-2 1200va toroidal, 45,000uf storage caps, 300wpc-8 ohms, 500wpc - 4 ohms XPA-3 850va, 60,000uf, 200wpc - 8, 300wpc - 4(Gen 1),330 wpc - 4(Gen 2) This amp tested two ch driven at 250wpc - 8, 400wpc - 4 XPA-5 1200va, 65,000uf, 200wpc -8, 300wpc - 4(Gen 1) Emo never published the specs on this amp for 2 ch but based on the larger power supply they could be no less than equal to the XPA - 3. In conversation with Lonnie the question was asked why by the XPA - 2 over the five if they were that close. The 2 had a few more bells and whistles. He stated that the XPA - 5 was way underrated when it came to 2 ch but if the specs were published.... I would expect the 5's specs to be well underrated at 3 ch.s driven as well. I did order up the 2 and had it for a direct compare with the 5. I still own the five as to my ears it was no less than the equal to the 2. All that being said you have an incredible set of speakers. If you can order and do a head to head I would surely lean that way! Enjoy!
  16. The placement in the room certainly make a difference in the bass output. I have had the same issue with the bass being more pronounced between the couch and TV area and moving the speakers just inches brought the big bass to the couch. Long wall and short wall also can play into it. I prefer the sound of the two-way vs. three-way in the Klipsch lineup. All of the KLF series 3-ways give me listeners fatigue within minutes at a moderate volume. I have had the 20's and 30's with the Ti tweets and it made little difference to the fatigue so I feel that it is a mid issue. I have several sets of the 10's and have no issue with them. I do believe that they are voiced more bass heavy/leaner in the mids than their big brothers and that is music to my ears! I am taking a guess here that the 82's are probably similar although their crossover point is much lower than the 10's 2.3Khz. Enjoy you new speakers!
  17. A little late to the thread but whatever you power the Chorus IIs with make sure it is powerful. It takes a lot to bring the woofers to life. I pushed mine with a Marantz rated at 125wpc and they were Ok. When I stepped up to a external amp rated at approx 250wpc they came alive. I ran an Academy as a center and it worked well for on axis listening. 30 degrees of center and you will not appreciate it as much.
  18. I had the RS-3s and the KSP-6 at the same time. The KSP's are larger than the 42's and I would expect their output to be greater. In my experience with a KLF frontend, the RS-3s were far better.
  19. I've owned the 10's, 20's and 30's. In my experience the 20's and 30's do need to be pushed a little to get the bass going. At lower levels the mids are far more present than the bass. The 10's have more bass and punchier bass at lower levels and stay balanced as they get louder. Of course they don't have the mid as they are a two way. Make sure that you do not have a loose front or back as that will effect the bass output as well.
  20. I have several pairs of the 10's in use and have had so for quite some time. I find that they have very solid bass and are not at all harsh. The othe in the KLF series do have seperate mids but I do find them shouty. I think in very good condition they may fetch $450ish with the low end being in the $200 range for being rough. Pretty good deal for originally retailing at $1100. They do frequently have a loose front or rear panel but that is an easy fix. As far as grills go I would check with Klipsch first. There is one currnently on ebay as "new old stock" but comes from Canada at about $80, I feel that is high. If you can deal with the industrial look you can purchase 10" grills from Parts Express. Enjoy!
  21. I would think the C5 would be a better match. I did own one several years back and the dialog was solid. I can understand about the size issue but if you could get past that the Academy would be a great match. As mentioned before the KT-LCR would also shine in that area.
  22. My girlfriend was made in China, no complaints! No complaints with my Marantz either.....
  23. I have to echo the warning on the rattling. They frequently have loose motor boards or rear panel due to failing glue. They are not hard to fix if you are at all handy. I do favor the 10's over the 20's and 30's as the mids are not so bright to my ear. The Bob C tweeter swap is also recomended and comes in around $60ish. As far as pricing I have snagged them for as little as $100(a little rough) to $350 (very nice). Either way you would have to spend considerably more for something new that compares.
  24. Max2, that looks very impressive! What the make/model of it?
  25. I have used passive rca attenuators on the input of my XPA-5 before. Not as flexible as a knob but certainly functional.
