  1. RIP PWK I regret that I was never able to meet you. My condolences to the Klipsch family.
  2. quote: Originally posted by talktoKeith: I wouldn't waste my time comparing speakers that Klipsch sold years ago to modern speakers. How would your present computer compare to one seven or eight years old? Fortunately for us, the analogy between computers and speakers doesn't work. While my five-year-old computer was obsolete four years ago, my 1978 Klipschorns will outperform just about every speaker made today. The speakers are twenty-four years old, but the design is almost 60 years old. THX certification means that a system meets or exceeds certain requirements. In order for a product to be "THX Certified", it must meet or exceed THX specifications AND, a royalty fee must be paid for every THX Certified item sold. When it was said that THX is failing, it means that fewer and fewer companies are paying the royalty fees to THX, even though their products may meet or exceed THX Certification requirements. They have decided that that little THX sticker on their product is not worth the royalty fee they have to pay to get it, and they feel most of their consumers are savy enough to know that that little sticker only adds to the price they have to pay.
  3. I am in need of some as well. One of my speakers is missing the logo, a couple others don't look too hot anymore. I'd probably be in need of 6 or 8, but would be willing to buy even more if needed.
  4. I believe that citrus based cleaners are good for removing candle wax. You may want to look into that.
  5. This topic has nothing to do with Klipsch, nothing to do with audio in general, and has no business being on this board. Although other non-audio topics do pop onto this board on occassion, this particular one doesn't belong here. Snackguy just threw a hand grenade on this board and pulled the pin. It is just waiting to explode. That's one heck of a topic for your second post snackguy. If I were a moderator, I would kill this topic. It serves no purpose for the goals of this board. I for one will not post any more replies to this topic.
  6. Yes, If you have two different amps, feeding identical speakers the same amount of power, then the current they are pushing is exactly the same. But that doesn't mean that all amps are identical. If you are using low impedance speakers (there are some out there with very low nominal impedance), or the speakers impedance dips very low at certain frequencies, then higher currents are needed from the amp. Some amps are capable of delivering these higher currents, some are not. This is the reason some amps are rated for driving 2 Ohm nomimal impedance speakers, and others you don't want to use with anything less than 8 Ohm speakers. If you are using nominal 8 Ohm speakers and the impedance doesn't dip very much (and, you are not connecting more than on pair in parallel), then the current issue is not likely going to be a problem. Most of your "high-end" superamps (Krell, Bryston, etc.) are capable of putting out huge amounts of current for the purpose of driving low efficiency, low impedance speakers (e.g. electrostatics). HK's claims are not just marketing ploys, it really can be advantageous to have that extra current in SOME applications.
  7. Other variables not mentioned are: test procedures, measurement equipment used, calibration of measurement equipment, and simple human error. There are simply too many variables for these specs to really mean a whole lot. If you had 100 different people measure the speakers, you would get 100 different results. Then you can also throw in the specs that have been "doctored". You can probably still find a car stereo power booster that will put out 500 wpc at the flea market for $30. 8. MDowns: Yup, those are the plans -- Khorns in front with a Belle center. Khorns for rears if I can make it work, otherwise La Scalas. Chris: Very nice room you have there.
  9. quote: Originally posted by Vavoline: JMON...Hey neighbor, it took 8 days to get my order to Dallas. This included a weekend. Not bad -- it took 21 calendar days for mine to arrive. No complaints though.
  10. C&S: I still have (and use) my five year old Performa 6360. I also have an old PC that's about the same age and a more modern PC. The biggest reason I keep the old Mac around is because it's the old reliable. It's the one I can depend on. If something ever goes wrong, I can easily get it working again within 15 minutes. The same cannot be said of my other two PC's. I have had problems that took weeks for me to get fixed. I am not an IT person, so that is part of the reason it takes me so long to fix these PC's. The other reason is that I am too stubborn to pay someone to fix them for me. My newer PC is faster than the old Mac, but I still use my Mac frequently. I mostly use it for E-mail as I prefer the Mac version over my PC. My Mac may be an antique in computer standards, but I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. If nothing else, it's my "emergency computer."
  11. You might want to get yourself a Belle for center. You can separate the top section from the bottom section, position them side-by-side, and you would be able to be under your 27" clearance requirement. A La Scala positioned sideways would also work. Some people have also mentioned the benefit of positioning the horns vertically. This message has been edited by JMON on 04-19-2002 at 04:14 PM
  12. To add additional information, they are also the "type-C" Klipschorn, meaning they do not have the riser between the top and bottom sections.
  13. JHawk: Thanks for the interesting recap. For those in the SW that can't make it to Hope, there is a "small" Klipsch museum setup at New Mexico State University. I was nearby several months ago and had to stop by Las Cruces to get a taste of the best Mexican food I know of, and decided to make a quick stop by the University. Unfortunately, the building was closed when I got there, so I could only look through the windows. They do have several Klipsch speakers including the plexiglass Klipschorn. They also had some VERY large vintage horns. They've got some pretty neat stuff there.
  14. Ed, I do remember seeing your Khorns before, but didn't remember that they didn't have the wrap-around grills. I had thought that they were modified to look like that, but it sounds like they came that way from the factory. I have seen that plexiglass Klipsch logo before -- on an old original plywood (not birch) Khorn at a Dealer's showroom. Your Khorns are gorgeous by the way.
  15. Mine arrived today. In my case, it did take a while to get. JBL didn't ship mine out until 12 days after I placed the order (I called them last week and found out the day they shipped). It took another 9 days to arrive. All in all, they took 3 weeks to be delivered. No complaints from me though, I was in no hurry. The delivery company actually called me to schedule a delivery time, they wanted a two hour window to deliver. Some initial comments: These things are big. They are very close in size to a Cornwall in all three dimensions. I used a citrus-based cleaner to get the warning label off. It came off very easily. If you're not sure how to connect the speaker wires, turn the thing upside down. Mine was upside down when I first looked at the speaker terminals and it was easy to see how to connect the wires. I didn't realize that you don't see the same holes when it's rightside up, until I turned rightside up. I like they way they look. Although they don't really fit in with most home's decor (low WAF), I think they look very cool! Tim Taylor would love these, very manly. I also think the white JBL logo on the sides look cool. I eventually plan to build a front grill. I also asked the delivery guy how much it cost to ship. He said JBL probably gets good shipping rates, and he guessed it would have been around $75 (California to Dallas). The hand truck that I bought at Home Depot for $30 is worth it's weight in gold. I also just used it a couple of days ago when I helped a friend move. It has been an invaluable tool. Unfortunately, I won't be able to use mine for a while, so they are back in their boxes.
  16. The Energizer Bunny is whom you are thinking of. It looks like you haven't reached the limit yet. That last one was 8-1/2 screens wide on my computer. This message has been edited by JMON on 04-04-2002 at 09:43 AM
  17. I believe the Khorns that don't have the "riser" between the top and bottom sections are the "C" version. The Khorns that do, are the "B" versions. However, what looks suspicious to me is the grill on the top section. It does not appear to wrap around the sides -- it's only on the front. I haven't seen any Khorns that have that type of grill. Check out these C-type Khorns without the riser, but note that the front grills do wrap around the sides: http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?spkrfull&1022300902 This message has been edited by JMON on 04-04-2002 at 01:46 AM
  18. Boa: Since I haven't heard these things, I'll have to say by "most", I mean somewhere between 51% and 99%.
  19. Danartdis: Yes, it is big (very big, check out the dimensions from the JBL site -- close in size to a Cornwall/La Scala). It does require an amp, but as others have mentioned you can get one from Parts Express (among other sources) for not much more than $130 or so. All in all, you can have a complete setup for around $350. I'm not sure you can get an HT subwoofer from Best Buy for that much. Is this the "deal of the century"? Maybe not, but I will tell you that JBL is literally almost giving these things away. The $216 includes shipping and a large 140 pound box isn't cheap to ship across the country! Boa: I don't doubt that you are getting some of those frequencies from your sub. My point was that I think the JBL would still reproduce most of what you're getting, it just does it at a much lower price. This of course is just my somewhat "educated guess" based on what I've heard others say as I have yet to hear one of these JBL rigs. This message has been edited by JMON on 04-03-2002 at 10:48 PM
  20. quote: Originally posted by Clipped and Shorn: It is this thread that was larger than my screen: http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum3/HTML/001110.html -riffed and periffed I tried that thread and didn't have any problems with it. I even shrunk down the window to get it about six inches wide and it still worked fine.
  21. Danartdis: I can't comment with experience since mine have not arrived yet. However, it was mentioned before that the JBL specs (that these things only go down to 30Hz) are very conservative for a home application. These speakers were supposedly measured in free space, since their intended application are for very large open spaces (movie theaters, sports arenas, etc.). In another thread, TBrennan mentioned that he measured his 4648's flat down to 25Hz. 25Hz was as low as his meter went, so it may very well go lower than that. The 4648 spec states it's usuable frequency response only goes down to 35Hz, so the 4638's may go even lower (usable down to 30Hz). From what I have heard, these should work excellent for home theater subs. They still may not go as low as some dedicated subwoofers (producing "sound" that is too low to be heard, but can be felt), but I don't think those frequencies will be encountered that much. If you got one, I doubt that you would notice a lack of deep frequency extension. However, at the price, they cannot be beaten (or even approached) by any of those subs you mentioned.
  22. In my experiences, Cornwalls do benefit from better amplification. What kind of electronics are you running with them? Personally, I didn't hear the harshness that people have mentioned. Maybe my ears just don't work as well as others' do. The best sound I got from my Cornwalls was with an ARC VT-50 power amp. Vocals sounded amazinglingly real. Horn instruments sounded like real horn instruments. The biggest weakness I found with them was the cabinet resonances at higher volumes.
  23. TBrennan: This is a sub that has been in the back of my mind for a while. I don't remember where I heard about it from, maybe it was here, maybe it was from you, I don't remember. To me, the biggest drawback to this sub was that it weighs 400 pounds! Moving that thing around can be a chore, especially if your listening room is upstairs! Anyway, here is a photo and some information that Dr. Bruce Edgar sent me about a year-and-a-half ago or so. It's been a while since I've posted a photo, so let's see if I'm able to do it.
