I've considered checking out using a Raspberry Pi. Would it be an improvement in sound quality (or otherwise) over a Node?

I believe that would depend on the DAC used. For instance, my Raspberry pi uses DAC +, whereas my Node uses the internal DAC.  I haven't spent enough time with the Node or comparing the 2, but i would be interested in seeing how much better it could get with an external DAC. Either way both sound good. If you are looking for a low cost entry, the Raspberry Pi is a great option,  and there are many quality DACs to choose from.

  2. My first Klipsch experience that wowed me was listening to Frankenstein by Edgar Winter Group on a friends Cornwall's at around 115db.  That got me hooked, from there I purchased Klipsch Heresy Is and the first album I can recall listening to was Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon.  That being said, I would recommend that.

ok how do I look at HJ sales? Anybody in So Cal got a pair I can hear?

I'm not saying they're flying off the shelves, but for the price of those things, they have sold more than most ever thought they would.

Maybe it's time to start another one of those threads that @Coytee had going, it listed all the UG Jubilee owners, their location and if they'd offer demos.

All you need is 6 channels of amplification, I don't see why you couldn't accomplish this with a single 6 or 7 channel amplifier.

McIntosh mc7106 comes to mind, but I am sure there are many class d amps that will fit the bill.

Here is an example of fine 6 channel amp from Parasound with 6 channels at 80 watts operating in class A/AB.

Bottom line, this can be achieved many ways at a low cost.

Even if you don't factor in the cost of tri-amping, it sounds like the inclusion of the DSP electronics will mean that these new versions will likely cost significantly more than the AL5 and AK6, which are already very expensive. Exciting but kind of terrifying in that sense.

As someone has mentioned, this ain't your grandpa's Lascala.  I think there are a lot of those that are willing to pay to achieve audio nirvana,  just look at the HJ sales.  There are a lot of us already using multiple amps for bi amp/tri amping.

  5. If it's 10 years old, I think you could do better/newer for under $1000.00.  Keep your eyes out, ask around, sometimes someone is sitting on something they are thinking of getting rid of.  Case in point, I started asking about Arcam, Anthem, and Marantz and was offered my AV7704 for $1000 shipped, and it was pretty much used for a demo and it great condition.

I found mine on Audioholics, also check AVS forum.

What about a Marantz SR 6008?

Is that the newer one (not sure if model number identifies the age)?

@The Dude If you don't mind me asking, what are you planning for your new preamp with phono section project? That sounds a lot like what I want.

I'll be using the Tubes4Hifi ph6 and pc5. They were designed to be replacement boards for the Dynaco PAS3.  I once had them installed in and make shift chassis. It's been a while since I've heard it, so I can't recall the characteristics of the sound, but that it was dead silent and good sounding.  I don't even recall what amp I used at the time. Hoping for similar results with ACA. There are 2-3 stereo setups I will keep and rotate through and this will be one of them.  That pre is currently under construction, so it won't be until later this year that I get to enjoy it again.

  8. I had a good experience with a tube line stage from Tubes4hifi.com.  I ended up selling that line stage to fund a new project, but do have a similar line stage that I will be building into a pre amp with phono section.  All of this comes from Tubes4hifi.com.  Note, this is running a tube pre/line stage into a solid state, some frown upon it and prefer to run SS pre into tube amps, YMMV.   If I was going to go SS, I would look at Diyaudio again for something from Mr. Pass.

The price for Hypex class D amp is good but, look at the power ratings.

I didn't actually compare all the specs between the topping and Hypex, but I'm not recommending the Hypex for the wattage, I recommending the Hypex for the quality. As you stated, better is in the eye of the  beholder, I just pointed him in the direction at what he can get for his budget.

I agree with the tube statement, my favorite to-date has been the Scott 222 I once owned. Next inline is my Nelson Pass ACA at 8 watts SE SS, hard to beat for the price.

Snake Eyes.  Scott 299A, 22 years post NOSValves restoration.  Other than biasing occasionally, nothing has been done to it.  Did some "tube rolling" once to see if I was an "audiophile"...couldn't tell a difference so still just a guy that likes music.  Feeding Forte IIs.  Nothing to compare it to, it's all I've used since around 2002-2003.

I'm waiting on the same piece from Craig at NOSVALVES.  Looking forward to it. Had a 222c, from NOSVALVES and kick myself for getting rid of it, hence the purchase of the 299 from him.

Any idea how much these are worth?

We will need pictures to determine that. Once condition is determined,  E.G. 9 out of 10, 5 out of 10, etc. Then you need to decide if you want to make a premium or a quick sell.  Depending on condition, prices can range from $500 to $2500.  $500 being rough amd a quick sale versus $2500 for pristine conditions and be willing to wait for the right buyer. The garage section is a good place, as a couple of Facebook froups such as audiophiles on budget, horn speaker marketplace and Facebook Marketplace.  GLWS.
