  1. The only way I'd paint is if the original veneer was beyond restoration. The previous poster was correct in that oak (or walnut) finish is the real deal, not merely stain on generic ply. I go out of my way (and will pay a premium) for Oiled Walnut Klipsch. And if I ever find a set of KLF30s in Mahagony, I'll just have to go hold up a few mini-marts. Gotta have em!
  2. OK, not exactly a thrift store but the next best thing, Craiglist. One pair of KG 3.2, one Academy Center, One Yamaha 5.1 HT receiver all for 95 bucks. 15 minutes from my domo. To be fair, the finish on the 3.2s is a little rough (black satin) and there are a few minor scuffs on the Academy, but what's not to like???
  3. Gliderguy, Many thanks for taking the time to respond. I have never heard any Klipsch buds so this is all good info for me. I'm not as tough on them as I let on, but they are fragile. The ones I have now sound terrible and it takes all the enjoyment out of listening. It's unfortunate that you can't go anywere and sample them. At least, I've never shopped at a store where trying them out was an option. Most are in blister packs. At least now I know where to start and have some info. WRT the Pioneer(s), the 9100 belongs to my brother who bought it new in the 70s. It was packed away and had issues with several of the pots and the volume control. I spent an hour with some aerosol cleaner and lube and it performs as good as new. I bought the matching tuner because it looks great as a stack. Then I found the 8100 on ebay. It's in mint condition and I got it cheap. I use it as a pre with the Sansui. I just like the old stuff. Call me a luddite.
  4. I'm a travelling Jones and I use my pod quite a bit. I'm also a clumsy and world class dork.....think Baby Huey on steroids, starbucks and crank. I abuse earbuds in much the same manner in which Michael Vick abused his dogs. Consequently I am loath to spend big bucks on something I will most certainly break, lose, rip, tear, discombobulate, spindle, mutilate, mangle, wail upon, trash, heave, chew, mandibulate, masticate, cramp, crimp, crush, crap upon etc. Therein lies my delimmna. Is there such a thing as a reasonably priced pair of buds which will provide me with a reasonable level of fidelity??? I have tried the crap that comes with the pod along with 2 different pair of Sony, Skull candy, and several sets of who knows what else. I tend to devour them like chicklets. For the most part, I hate them all, but I also hate the idea of dropping big bucks bucks on a set due to their short life span when in my bumbling possession. My ions are all dicked up.
  5. While I am ill equipped to opine on the currency of manufacture or availabiIity of them I can testify as to the sonic quality of the Fecal Mat(erial) 100s and the Smegtron. The Fecal Mats, particularly when driven by the Smegtron afford all the ethereal listening quality of one inmate farting into his sink drain to gain the attention of a fellow con in another cell a few doors down. YES, they do both produce an audible "sound", but the experience leave one feeling somewhat violated and wishing for a long hot shower. It's not really listening, rather it's merely hearing. Hearing as in a car crash, fingersnails on a blackboard, scratching glass, bad intestinal rumblings, a wailing 2 year old on a long flight in the seat behind you, a miserable yapping lapdog, the GF phoning the wife to fill her in on your extra curriculars, a connecting rod piercing an engine block, Celiene Dion, Billy Ray Cyrus, Neil Sadaka, etc. It's just BAD and something you'd rather not hear ever. Meanwhile, I will continue to scour Craigslist in an attempt to ameliorate the dreadful aural position that I put myself in each time I spend time at her domo. (Good thing she's a gym rat!)
  6. Just north of Richmond VA the Atlee / Elmont Exit (west) there is a decent little dive BBQ shack about one mile down Rt 1. It's called Phat Boys or something like that. Cheap and ice cold beer. Take the exit west and go left at the second light onto Rt 1. It will be on the right in 1/4 mile and you can't miss it. Right next to it is a fantastic tackle shop called Greentop. Plan on wasting at least and hour in Greentop. Three if you're also a gun nut. Just south of the NC border is a tiny little smoke shop called JRs. If you like cigars, then I think you'll like JRs.
  7. If all you want is a simple way to hook up the pod, just use a 1/8" stereo pin to RCA jack and hook it up to the amps AUX input. I used this method to hook up my "special lady friends" SatRad and iPod. It sounds absolutely like crap, but that is primarily due to her Fecal-Mat 100 speakers and the Smegtron 1000 that she uses for her receiver. I have a few of the cables lying around my crib and they sound reasonably decent. Not LP or CD qual by any stretch, but pretty good. Works and is cheap and easy.
  8. "Seven channels of crap..." I love it. Mind if I borrow that from time to time? I will cite the original author, promise.
  9. Two power amps, two sets of speakers, one preamp with only a single L/R output. Can I assume that there is an RCA cable with a L/R female end that then splits each channel into two (L/L R/R) male plugs? Thanks.
  10. NILES SPK-1 They retail fro around 100 bucks but I have seen them on eBay for 80. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230429954628&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT (not sure why this doesn't show as a link...sorry) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- You'll need one of these gizmos if I understand your post correctly. The current from one amp will cause some bad juju with the other amp if you leave them both connected. And as was posted, if you remove the jumper (or Yumper if you are from a Nordic country) then you'll be knocking half of each speak out of the equation. I could go into a long detailed diatribe as to how I know all about this firsthand, but that would make me look like an idiot and you might just be able to feel the resultant heat from my amp and smell the curious electrical odors wafting about which emmanated from same when I tried this little trick. Made sense sorta.....but then again I'm a dolt so don't take my word on anything. Sucks to be sure. The flip side it that my starter wife got my old (lame) system. Little does she know that I am now shaking the walls in grand fashion! She doesn't know about the twins either. Which reminds me a of joke...... What's the difference between a guys first wife and his second wife?? The first one has real diamonds and fake orgasms, whereas the second one has fake diamonds and ......well... you get the picture.
  11. Your first pair are Cornwalls?!!??? Why not just come over and wizz on my barbeque?? Leave a steamer in the Loo. Insult my mother...that kind of stuff. I hate you. Just kiddin. Way to go. Top drawer. Shazamm. Shack. Golly. High Fives. YoGoGurl(Dude). Killer. Congrats. How spectacular. My My. Woweee. How nice. You really know how to hurt a guy. If I bring the beverages....can I come over for a listen????
  12. I have used the iTunes EQ. and I don't have any real problem with it. But, I listen to Pandora frequently and this is the issue I am trying to remedy. My Lenovo laptop has a built in EQ and I don't like it. The one in my old laptop was superior, but it's an old Microsoft issue and I can't find it. I may just wing it and download one of the many available and try it for a while. If I don't like it, I'll just dump it and try another. I'm trying to get my PC audio to sound closer to my 2 CH set up. I know it's a lost cause, I'm just trying to get it as "close" as I can to the original source.
  13. My apologies in advance for blaspheming the site by bringing the topic of digital (MP3 etc) up but.... I hate the EQ that came on my new laptop with Vista. I'm trying to match the output signal of the PC to the original source (CD) which I have burned to iTunes. The disc is in the player and synched to iTunes on playback. I'm simply flicking the input selector to compare the two while modulating the EQ. The settings are a pain. The sound still sucks and is overwhelmed with bass. I'm not cruising my donk in the hood so this is a somwhat troubling experience gnomesane? My old machine wasn't such a PITA and I had better luck at a more realistic sound. I notice that there are numerous free downloads for EQs. Before I leap I thought that I'd ask if there was one that someone LIKES and recommends?? I promise that I will run back downstairs to my main system and play some vinyl to atone for this hidious digital post. Yahbecoo.
  14. I picked up a very nice copy of this symphony at a thrift shop last month. The sleeve is a bit rough but the LP itself is in great shape. My father was a professional musician in a large metropolitan symphony so I grew up listening to classical music. He grew tired of this piece because they played it frequently but he is a die hard classical music man. His stereo is on from sunup till sundown. I bought him a pair of Klipsch (CL) for Christmas. My day usually begins with classical through my Fortes and a vintage Sansui G-5700. It's a shame that so many don't know what they're missing.
  15. Is it for sale, or have all the astronomical / historical gizmos and gosintas aligned this week ?? http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rds/ele/1581987132.html
  16. $$$$mokin hot deal. I have been scouring CL for the last 2 yrs looking for some Mahagony (or cherry) KLF30 (or 20s). Closest I have come is some Black Satin 20s for nowhere near as cheap as yours but at least they're geographically resonable. I'm just jonsin' for some wood. There are deals, and there are killer deals. Yours fits in the latter category. My brother picked up a pair of oak Forts IIs for FIFTY BUCKS! They're not perfect, but close enough at that price. He also got a perfect pair of KG5.2s for something equally amazing....I think he got them for $80. And not to mention some perfect KG4s for $100. Deals are out there!
  17. That rug really ties the room together. Fascinating old unit, I love the look of that amp. Congrats.
  18. "Duuuuuuuuuuuude.......Duuuuuuuuuuuude, You're being very undude." - W. Sobchak. I'm pretty sure that it was a gentle poke and no harm was intended. You did say that money was no object. I thought it was hilarious, but then again my brain tissue is a bit softer and smokier than most. Smoke a Thai stick, chill a bit and come on back. This forum is a fantastic place to gain insight and glean info from peeps who spend more on audio gear than I do on transportation. I've learned a ton and really appreciate the fact that many of these guys so freely offer their opinion and advice. Brings a tear to my eye it does..........
  19. Sweeeeeeeet. I keep looking, but I am having issues with the wallet. If I could find a deal like that I'd jump. It looks great for it's age.
  20. They don't have a lot of pull here on the forum, and having never heard a pair of LaScalas or KHorns, I can only compare them to lesser Klipsch speakers. Of course I'll never own a $5000 amp and a $3000 CD player so the playing field is uneven. But with my $200 Phase Linear 400 (200 watt) amp and my old vintage Pioneer Preamp I absolutly LOVE my CF3s. They're positively sick and I will never part with them. I also have a pair of Fortes and my brother has Chorus and Forte IIs. I have also heard Hereseys and many of the smaller speakers in the Klipsch line so that's all I can compare them with. Perhaps I have bad ears but I'm crazy about mine. And, I only paid $220 for them. hahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you ever get a chance to hear them, take along some Tragically Hip and listen to "Waiting for a place to happen". Turn it up and stand back.
  21. Lots of chat about Crites replacment crossovers. I had him reman the X-overs in my CF3s and I am quite pleased. So I guess my question is; What do I do about upgrading my old my Fortes? Rebuild, or replace the Xovers? Serial number 8910292 & 93. They still sound great (to my ears) but if the caps are craps, then what the hell? I haven't spent any money on audio gear in almost a month!
