Time to lay those subs down against the front wall just below a 140" projection screen.[Y] You can paint the front wall with screen paint formula's you can get over at AVSforum.com and wrap your boards with black velvet and have a really big screen for 1/4 of what a TV will cost. You can put (4) 52" diagaonal TV's inside a 110" screen.

Nice Terry Redlin prints on the wall too. The JL has some large THD figures when pushed hard from what I remember reading in the one review. Anyone remember what it was? something like 20% at max output.

By the way, the Danley TH-SPUD design has been on the market a little less than a year. The FR on the Danley goes Lower/Flatter. I would like to see both mapped out over the whole frequency response when mated with the K-Horns or the Jubs. The size/shape of the Danley may be a fair bit easier to handle than a 684 or 884, and its FR goes lower and is flatter. However, the Klipsch units have higher sensitivity (Danley TH-SPUD=94 dB/W, KPT-884=98 dB/W, KPT-684=105 dB/W). I just don't have a place to put a direct radiator subwoofer of those sizes/shapes. Using two SPUDs in the front corners (which by the way increases the effectiveness of any subwoofer low end fairly dramatically) is, I would think, more than a match for a 884 placed along a wall, i.e., the only place that I could put one. I would also think that the distortion of two Danleys placed in corners might be lower than an 884 along a wall when considered at THX reference volumes. The down side of the Klipsch designs are their FRs (KPT-884 is 27 Hz, the KPT-684 is 36 Hz at their -3db points) while the Danley is more like 19 Hz. One of my criteria was to extend the low end of my Jubs by about an octave. With one tapped horn in a corner I believe that I've achieved that criterion. My classical organ CDs/SACDs have literally come to life, and it's been a pleasure listening to bass artists now (Bromberg, Clarke, Pastorius, Miller, Wilkenfeld, etc.). Movies are a new experience (e.g., Iron Man, U-571, War of the Worlds). Chris Chris, Several problems with your post; The orriginal poster was more interested in a musical Sub then low frequencies, My HGS-18IIs play to 15Hz, the DD-18 plats to 13Hz. My recomendation was for pure musical sub that sounds the best with the speaker, as we all know that specs are not the entire picture. As stated, a Bass boost may be obtained by corner placement, but prohibitive with Jub and K-Horn, but a Bass boost can also be achieved by stacking subs, or placing the directly next to each other as seperate location sub placement can have a cancelling effect. Even so, unless we are talking a huge room, the SPL of the subs at this level it really isn't going to make much difference, and with one 18 directly above the other on the 684, you get that reinforcement effect. The Spud is going to need almost 16 watts to put out the same dB as the 684 does at one watt with the afore mentioned sensitivity rating, or a pair of Spuds will be up to 97dB, with a watt through each one (less output then a Quartet at 1 watt) Distortion levels of two Danleys vs: 884, I recomended the 684, not the 884, and if you follow Paul Klipschs statement that distortion is inversley related to efficiency, what does that do to your theory, plus possible cancellation and other possible problems, when we have determined thatwith the Jub or K-Horn, that wont be an option anyhow unless you plan on using the rear corners. Once again, with your final statement, the recomendations are for a system used most always for MUSIC, not movies. Movies have alot of material below 19Hz or audible frequencies that you feel. You can add to your movie experience with felt guteral frequencies that you can't even hear if that is a requirenment / mainly movie viewing, then there are alot more choices out there better then anything in this thread. 19Hz is not required for music unless you like Rap, Syntesized music, or compition test tone CDs. Roger I was going to say, man, I guess 3/4 of my pipe organ collection is not music then, as 60% of the organs out there have 32ft stops which have a 16hz Low C note on them. But anyway I agree with you Roger on the quality of bass as most people have never experienced extremely tight, accurate bass. Most all of the subwoofers out there are not "tight" at all. Just like the JL subwoofers for car stereo when they use to advertise their W7 woofers as "tight". 4 of us went to a IASCA event one year when they first came out with them and all of us got out of JL's demo car and asked each other, " Was that boomy, or what?" Another brand right across from them, was the epitomy of "tight bass". The old saying, ..." Contentment is destroyed by comparison" You think that the VW is the worlds greatest car in the village, until the guy in the Rolls Royce shows up.[] But my question is: has anyone done a side by side comparison of the Danley and Klipsch for quality of bass?

Thanks for the pictures and some more info on the output characteristics of these things.....I haven't made it yet to hearing either of my 2 RCA bins but getting closer and will do some more freq.response charts on the Ubangi too for comparison to the Shearer.

The other RCA bass speaker that was made in the 40's was the Ubangi model (named after the tribe that wears the disc in their lower lip) It is almost the same physical size as the Shearer. But it is a bass reflex design. I saw an ad for one on the Lansing Heritage Forum last week and it was placed by the Cinema Preservation Co. ( they go in and salvage video and audio gear out of the 33,854 theatres around the country). They had plucked a Ubangi out of a theatre in Stauton, Va and had it back at their warehouse in Asheville, NC ( 2 hours away ). So I bought it.[] Back side (fuzzy pic) mouth opening. I will have to load it with drivers , then compare the performance to the Shearer. I do think that both of them in my garage will finally give me "pant-leg flapping bass"[Y] I also was glad to see that it is 33 1/2" tall , so it will pass through my front door. Already talked with the wife about the possibility of veneering it and putting it under the 110" projection screen in the Great Room.

Made the mistake of buying a KSW150 sub with a 10" woofer in it on Craigslist...brought it home and hooked it up and discovered it has to be the world's boomiest subwoofer I've ever heard. Does anyone else have one of these? There isn't any combination of settings that gives acceptable sound. I already have it listed back on there as I can't live with this one any longer.[N]

been working on the mid/high cabinets to mate up with the 105db Shearer horn. Got the two Audax PR170MO drivers and the Ciare 1.38 tweeter cabinet built...open baffle design I got from a guy on the Lansing Heritage Forum. Used some Honduras Mahogany I had left over in the attic for the sides and MDF for the baffle and the top and bottoms. Got the grille cloth frames in place and painted. Grille cloth installed on the frames. Felt installed on the top and bottoms. They'll do for use in the garage...now I have to wire in some inductors and some Solen caps for the tweeters.

Craigslist is hit and miss......also bought a Mackie VLZ12 channel mixer with effects for 50.00 in new condition last month. But missed a pair of JBL 250 (originally 2500.00) big boy speakers that went for 40.00 ( had bad surrounds )...that is likely the best deal I've ever seen on there...missed them by 10 minutes.[:@]

I recently picked up my latest K2 on the local craigslist for 250.00 in mint condition. Passed up another one for 450.00 last month.

Hey, you're the one who started me down this path.[] I'm just hoping that I will end up with the same bass slam that your Jubilee's have once I get some music playing through it. Working now on the front speakers. This is a pic of the 2 Audax PR170MO pro midrange drivers(7 1/2" diameter) , and the Ciare 1.38 tweeter (6" diameter) sitting on the baffle board ( this will all be 105db eff ), should mate up nicely with the RCA bass bin. I have bought the 4-15" drivers needed for some Jamboree's, but need to finish this garage system before I start on that project for inside the Great Room.

Got some testing done today. Rolled the big boy to the outside edge of the garage and hooked up the PC program directly to the Crown Macro Reference amp. This is the response curve. Rolled it back in to the corner of the room and took measurement on the LH, middle, and RH sides of the room then averaged them Looks like it will be a handfull from 50hz up to 300hz.(which is where I'm going to cross them over ).a midbass monster at 106db eff.

Could have been...but in that small little town I'm from of 5k people, I doubt if they would have gone to the trouble or had the extra money likely involved in doing that, or had someone who would have hooked it up for them.

Interesting reading.....ya don't need no stinkin speaker to do 20hz...[:^)] 40-13000 is just about right for 99% of all recorded stuff, especially back then before trying to recreate earthquakes and sound effects with the movie crowd. I do remember going to the movie theatre and watching "Earthquake" with the then unknown to us, Shearer horn ,which was behind the screen....must have been around 1970 or so. Those field coil drivers must have been hurting bad trying to do that stuff.
