  1. I know it's a lightly different category of 'table, but the Technics SP-10 series can be outstanding tables, depending on plinth, arm, etc. But they are heavy (40-50 lbs. without the base) and not too common. If you can find one that's clean, you have a turntable for life. They just don't have problems. New, they were 3-4x the cost of an SL1200, but used they're often near the same price as a used SL1200.
  2. Right now my cheap Sony DVD player is handling CD playing duties. Poorly, I might add. It has begun hiccuping on the slightest of of surface irregularities. I need something better. Is there an all-in-one in the $3-500 that plays CD's well and delivers competant aound? What has worked for you? What HASN'T worked for you.
  3. Yeah, I'm a fan. but I have to, being from south Louisiana (Nick's show originates from New Orleans). New Orleans is such a cauldron of musical creativity & talent it's not even funny...
  4. The phono section on the Blueberry is a freak of nature,er freak of technology. Whatever. It sounds unbelievable. I OD'd on old CTI records tonight. Unbelievable. Now I need a decent CD player...
  5. I hooked up the Teac. It knocked the tube rush to about half, a very acceptable level, and about what I'm used to for quality tube gear through Khorns. What baffles me is why the rush was so loud with the Lux amp section, even with gain & volume all the way off on the BB. It would still pass a latent low level hiss to the amp with all knobs to the left? Hah, just looked again at the rear end of the Luxman (baby's got back!) and there is a level pot by the amp inputs. I used this to trim down the level so the front colume control was more useful. After a bit, I'll hook back of to the Lux and see if this pot acts on the amp, or if it merely trims down the preamp level going into the amp. Yeah, yeah, a beginner, I know. A bit like watching a train wreck, right?
  6. Pretty strong tube rush there. Hey, BB-ers, how quiet are yours? Just wondering if I've got a loud tube or something. Even the line section gives out a fair dose of white noise. The phono section is only a wee hair noisier than the line section. (That's one heckuva phono section!
  7. Whoah, it WORKS, and HOW! (Um, my Lux is L-309, not L-430. I must be subconsciosly lusting for a Lexus, which would be quite out of character for me.) Well, right off the bat, with Ladysmith Black Mambazo in my cheap DVD/CD player, bass is both bigger and better defined. Otherwise, sounds pretty familiar. Then I put Oregon's Into the Woods on the TT. Yow! Very natural, clean, the upright bass is just beautiful, piano sound is okay, horns are awesome. And percussion is HERE. Ralph Towner sounds like he's here, too. Okay, this is FUN.
  8. Okay, while my she-mice are away, this cat's playing. I'm making all my Blueberry connections for the first time. In the spirit of changing one thing at a time, I'd like to use the amp section of my Luxman L-430 integrated. Here's my dumb question: Back of the Lux has "Pre-out" RCA's and "Main-in" RCA's, connected to each other with jumpers. I remove the jumpers, & connect BB's output to Main-in. Right? Sheesh. Beginners, eh?
  9. My son just returned from garage salin' with pristine Japanese pressings of Pink Floyd's Animals, Pink Floyd's A Saucer Full of Secrets (wow, what a trip listening to THAT again, after all these years!) and Mott the Hoople (pure dreck). 5 bucks for the lot of 'em.
  10. My wife greatly prefers the KHorns in their corners to their predecessors; limp-wristed little sissy boxes (ie, monitors) on stands, out into the room a bit. She places this n' that on top of them, and places plants in front of the bass bin. She's happy, and cares nothing for stereo. We have the added benefit of having them in a room finished in 4'x4' oak library panel, against which the wood finish fairly disappears. Which makes those strange white boxes in Michigan make sense...if the room works for them.
  11. D-man, I do that every day in the shower. Doesn't work on heavy producers. I still get a nearly 1/2" plug out of each ear 2-3x a year. I'm not kidding. No need to spend on the pik, by the way. I use a simple bulb irrigator...like the item used to suck snot out of babies' nose. Just suck up warm water and keep irrigating (carefully) and before long the chunks will be forthcoming. I'm usually a bit dizzy afterwards
  12. Any doctor will yrll you a Q-tip is a bad idea. It's not a huge problem for most people, except the danger of injury. But if you're a heavy wax producers (I'm off the scale), you're merely packing the wax against the eardrum. I use a bulb and warm water and clean things out 2-3 times per year. I won't gross everybody out with what comes out, but I will say my hearing is dramatically more articulate & crisp afterwards. It's a mess, but a blessing. Something like genetic hearing protection, as my hearing tests exceptionally well for my age.
  13. Mine came in yesterday. QUESTION...do you suppose its' okay to leave the bugger on all the time. I'd prefer to stick it on the floor behind my armoire in the on position. And yes, I've got a new Blueberry I'll be hooking up to it. It's all the amp I can afford after that purchase!. I'll be comparing this amp to the amp section on my Luxman integrated...
  14. PS, what do folks do with their "de-installed" old crossovers? Any use for them or the parts?
  15. Hmm, that's how the crossovers have been represented here. but the components on your board are so much beefier than the old stock unit. And more of them. It's a great sound. Makes me wonder what that old set I once had (a 54 and 57 Khorn) would have sounded like with upgraded components. The wooden sqwakers sure were pretty!
  16. Installed your AA's in my 77 Khorns this evening. Why was under the impression these were just a fresh component version of the Klipsch AA? It's one heck of an upgrade! The sound improvement is dramatic. The voices of the Hillyard Ensemble singing Gesualdo's wild Tenebrae have never sounded like this! Yum! A big fat thank you!
  17. I have an old Fidelity Research step-up transformer I'll never use if somebody is interested. Super cheapo.
  18. Allan, I was LOOKING for Metheney's missive on KennyG to post to this thread. it gets me every time. If Metheney never played a good note, he'd have my respect for this outburst alone. But he has played some good notes. An awful lot of them.
  19. Doh! Of course Guy. I thought I knew I meant what I was saying. Teac it is. Any leads?
  20. Dang, Dean. I'm a mindless robot and want to be told what to do. The size of my listening room may indeed point toward AA.
  21. Welcome, BillB! I'm domiciled in Baton Rouge myself. I could have used you a few times when you were living here. Did you work out of a shop or music store when you were here? Enjoyed your web site...
  22. If you'd like to hit a lower price point, I have a minty 309 integrated I'd let go for a song. Well, for a song and a few dollars here and there. Provided I can find one of those Marantz 3 channel chip amps
