  1. Will audyssey address phase? It's supposed to. All guides indicate setting phase to 0 if that setting is present on your sub. Is it on the same wall as your mains? no, but it's in a similar plane. i'll take some pictures tonight so you can better understand the setup. Have you tried it out of the corner (just for testing, not necessarily as a permanent location)? i haven't How have you checked phase? how? Have you tried it tucked into the corner as far as it will go? no, but i will. Have you considered getting some of those slippery furniture moving feet for sliding it around? (If it's on a wood or smooth surface, you can slide it around with a scrap piece of carpet placed upside down). will do this tonight. How have you measured the frequency to apply your amps PEQ band? You need to do this FIRST before running Audyssey and Audyssey won't have to use up so many of it's resources. Let the sub amp PEQ do the heavy lifting. no. i don't have the tools required to measure effectively and so the amp's PEQ is sitting unused. (I'll think of some more questions shortly) definitely keep the suggestions coming. i don't mind tweaking and playing - and i'm certainly not disappointed in it's current performance - i just know it can be better with some time and effort.
  2. Don't you have a sub you should be calibrating or something? dude, this whole job thing is getting in the way. i race home to quickly test stuff out - but then i have to spend time with wife, and chores, and dinner, and blah blah blah. i do some tweaking and re-calibration by around 10pm and it's too late for me to really test. so the next day, rinse and repeat. woe is me, right? as stated in my other thread, i'm impressed at how well this thing performs in spite of my crappy calibration and limited placement options [6]
  3. with great power comes great responsibility. and also, i know these are rambling thoughts - try to follow along. it's definitely easy to make this hot. i thought i would crank up the gain a little bit for a more dramatic presence and it just overpowered the scene, without giving any extra detail. backed it down to around calibration levels and it blended in well, while still getting plenty loud and full. it does very well with music. i THINK i hear a little bit of boominess, which could either be me not used to having a sub or the sub's location. Due to it's size, I don't really have a lot of locations to play around with - but i do have it in a corner, mouth firing into the room, about 6-8 inches from each wall. So it's likely i'll have to make some compromises in sound and/or look at some in depth EQ'ing in the future. had a fun little exercise last night while my wife and sister were around: cranked up the starwars pod race and had them stand in front of the mouth, insert arms, etc - the amount of air being pushed is impressive and made me giggle. tweaked some of the amp settings last night and re-ran audyssey. will play around more tonight to find out what i hear. i must emphasize that this thing is fantastic even when not fully dialed in, which is a great testament to it's design. i just know I have a ways to go before i hit the point of diminishing returns. i've had ample time to caress this beauty and carl's craftsmanship is superb; i am truly fortunate to have a piece of his handywork in my home. definitely look at adding rubber feet - they were not in the orginal plans, but im assuming the they help prevent sub-walking as well as some dampening between the mouth and the floor. also brace the crap out of BEFORE you complete assembly. i can't describe how rattle and vibration free this cabinet is at such high levels of operation. you can hear the driver moving and everything around the sub in the room, but that is it.
  4. I have yet to exerience a single event in my years since grade school (12+) that required perfect attendance. i think you've actually spared them from the years of ridicule and torment which follow "perfect attendance" kids.
  5. i think we can collectively agree that ANYTHING is better than Bose and therefore ANYTHING should be acceptable in the eyes of man. Praise be to the Rock gods, for they are fair and just.
  6. i guess i had images of the driver basket snapping and destroying itself like so many pictures commonly associated with shipping klipsch center channels. no music yet. Morgan was a great wife and stayed up to welcome me home, but went to bed shortly thereafter. Had to go straight to work today, so really haven't been able to air it out much. (i crammed just a few movie scenes in this morning before bolting out the door)
  7. calibration was done with just the audyssey mic since any sort of tweaking capability/best performance options I have right now are all internalized to the AVR. So far, I've gotten the sub gain down to 1/4 and i still end up with a trim level of -7 for the sub. It's definitely a hot rod. made the trip just fine. the mouth didn't bow, and the excess of straps kept the cabinet itself from bouncing around. i was a little worried about the driver after the 5 hours of bumpy texas highways, but nothing seems to be loose or rattling. i had a horrible sensation of fear when i first fired it up - there was a big rattle/buzz, but it turned out to be the AV closet door and knob. whew. even when it's thumping out bass, you hardly feel it on the exterior sides of the cabinet ..no rattling, very little vibration (which i attribute to the excellent bracing, denser mdf, and the big rubber feet). Absolutely no sub crawl. compared to an RT-10d? i want to reserve my impressions until i have put the same amount of effort into calibration and integration - but so far there is no comparison whatsoever. (with the RT-10d losing)
  8. oh and i forgot to mention.. the sub is about 25 ft away from the main listening position and it shakes the seats as if it were placed right next to them.
  9. sat the wife down this morning before work, pushed the sub gain up to 1/2 way, and skipped to the pod race scene in star wars episode 1. "it's like a movie theater" she said, "but better!". She still seems a bit wary about the size - but that will fade once it get final finish and our eyes adjust to the monolith simply existing in the space. It's a beast, heavy as sh** (due to the mdf), but solid solid solid. It barely vibrates, but doors and walls table top items rattle like crazy. Even at 20ft away and minimal power allocation, the seats shake. i'm going to have to buy a ton of weather stripping or gasketing tape to tighten up all of the doors - that's a fantastic problem to have. I had initially thought I would have the sub fire into the corner, but it just soundy boomy and muddy. flipped it around and things are much better - but the access panel and wiring are visible - no fault of Carl's, it was a choice he had me make early on and I made an assumption. I'l find an aesthetically pleasing solution, just something to remember as you plan/build this thing and how you think it might be oriented in the room.
  10. i stil have to re-run and tweak audyssey..but the 10pm quick and dirty setup with the gain on my 500w amp set at 1/3rd = WOW. not only have i missed having a sub, but THIS sub is fantastic.
  11. t-minus 11 hours. we had rain all throughout my travel path today, so had to push it out until tomorrow. sunny and 60's all day, so we'll be good to go. sure hope i can get some sleep tonight - it's worse than xmas!

  13. The preggo didn't feel much like going out last night so I picked up Gabriel's new concert bluray for us to enjoy (she's a big fan). Turned off the lights, cranked it up to reference levels (85db, right?) and felt like we were there. The orchestra was fantastic and even though he's getting old and has all of his weird between song speeches, he still sounded great. Can't wait to get my sub in the system and re-watch the whole thing.
  14. doh, sorry to hear sir. Hopefully someone can accommodate in a couple of weeks.
  15. I'm going to Beaumont this weekend of the person wants to meet on I-45 somewhere, or in Beaumont directly.
  16. speaking of sushi.. http://youtu.be/ces98B8W8r4
  17. ohh, you simply must try it out if/when you can. Don Davis has a 4 khorn + academy + svs pb 12 ultra that simply sounds glorious with movies.
  18. I'm thinking 5 minutes after he gets home. it'll be about 10pm by the time i get home. I may get it hooked up, but I doubt I'll be able to run Audyssey and put it through some testing until Sunday. However, when I brought the RF-5's home I had them hooked up and blasting movies/music until around 1am and that's when I had actual neighbors - so we'll see.
  19. Dave - If you ever find yourself up in the Dallas area, you're more than welcome to drop by.
  20. my iPhones and iPad and MacBook pro are all made by underpaid suicidal Chinese, yet the quality is superb. just goes to show that you can't make assumptions and always be 100% correct.
