  1. I know that this is off-topic, but has anyone thought about building a double-folded tapped horn to put under a la scala?
  2. Colter - I'm not sure I understand the leaving 2" around each back corner? Are you saying to place them 12" away from the back wall and 2" from the side?
  3. What's your room placement like? I have a Forte ii system in my living room and they definitely sound better 18-24" into the room. A pair of Heresy's and a sub may be better if the speakers need to be against the wall. If you're looking for bass and like your Heresy's you could probably get a pair of Cornwalls instead of Chorus for the price that you're talking about.
  4. I have a different model, but maybe you could do something like stick a pencil in there and try to get the metal to catch on the rubber eraser?
  5. Hi bliss, I've been reading your thread for a while now on the Cornwall upgrades. I'm pretty jealous of your set. I think that the ap12-500/es5800 with a wooden horn is out of my price range right now so I'm mainly trying to figure out whether moving 4khz-6khz from the squawker of the la scala to the tweeter will result in a significant improvement in sound?
  6. I picked up a beater pair of La Scala's (and a set of vertical Cornwalls as a project). I've read a lot of postings on La Scala's and was wondering if anyone had tried ALK's solution of a Crites CT-125 with a 4k crossover? Also - what do people generally think of black La Scala's? There are a fair number of dings and chips in the corners that I want to clean up, but veneering the doghouse is probably more difficult a project than I want to tackle right now.
  7. Al, Does your es5800 need to be used for the high-end? Or could you use a Universal connected to an AP12-600? Or could a couple of values be changed on the Universal to move the woofer/squawker to 600Hz?
  8. Did you do all of the mods at once? Kind of curious if the cap upgrade and bass bin reinforcement were the biggest change?
  9. missed a couple of posts there...
  10. I've started researching the same thing... First started with a set of Forte's and basic upgrades, now starting on a pair of cornwalls. I've heard a set of the older Altec vott's, so I'm probably leaning that way, but I'm curious about the 2" drivers and above (although they are probably out of my price range right now). mid range horns generally increasing in price: PH-800 (crites) altec 511b (811b with higher crossover) gothover fastrac alk trachorn 400 JBL 2380A fc260 Edgarhorn, 510/402 jubscala?
  11. Wow! Is that your wooden horn upgrade (I've looked at your website before) or a shorter one to fit in the cornwall cabinet? I've got a pair of Cornwalls that I bought to restore, but now I have second thoughts...
  12. I've heard both speakers in the past, but it's been a long time. I remember the kg3.2's lacking in bass. The klf-20's are a 3-way speakers with a tweeter, midrange horn and two 10" drivers. The kg3.2's have a tweeter and an 8" driver with a 10" passive. I have a pair of kg5.5's which give much better bass than the 3.2's, but given the choice between them and the klf'20s - I'd pick the klf's.
  13. Looked up an older review and the input impedance is listed at 100k ohms. I saw a couple of places where a 20:1 ratio was recommended for the amp/preamp impedances, so at 3.5k ohms in the Peach that's at 70k (and in the JM operation notes - HiZ recommended for >100k ohms). Is there a standard recommended ratio? Can you have too high of a ratio?
  14. I'm pretty new to this, but I noticed a definite improvement in the midrange of my Fortes with a crossover upgrade.
  15. Hi everyone, Looking for some advice on a preamp. I have a Rotel that I *was* happy with, but now I suspect that it is the weak link in my system. Eventually I'd like to build a set of cornscalas using altec 511b's (I only have the horns right now), but that project won't start until fall. I'm looking for something equally good for both tube and ss amps, recommended for rock, blues, vocals, $900-$1500? If they were still being made - I'd save up and buy a Peach or Blueberry, so unless someone has one for sale - I'd love to hear your 2nd choice too. Sources: various digital (ipod, cd, etc.) linked through ps audio dac preamp: rotel 1070 amp: mccormack dna-1 (a friend has a mod'd dynaco that he's going to let me borrow for a while to play with) speakers: Klipsch Forte ii (BEC crossover and tweeter upgrades - thanks Bob!)
  16. Philip, I'm a little confused by your post on the clocking in USB vs firewire. Aren't the data transfer rates of both formats high enough that it really doesn't matter if you're clocking or not? As long as you have no other devices on the chain - both firewire and USB can transfer maybe 10 cd's in the amount of time it would take to play one song? I'm kind of stuck in that the amount of data being sent is so much smaller than the capacity of the interface (assuming you don't have too many devices on the line or too many neighbors causing packet loss on your wireless). Can you point me to an article that explains this in more detail? Thanks!
  17. I haven't tried this, but I saw it when shopping for a dac. http://www.psaudio.com/ps/how-to/how-to-play-flac-in-itunes
  18. I recently bought a rotel 1070 preamp that had been a demo. There are some deals on Rotel gear since they are updating their line.
  19. I'm not an expert - but I'm very happy with the ps audio DAC for $700. I run my ipod through a wadia that a friend sold to me for cheap and an older sony changer with an optical out.
  20. Keep your eyes open on craigslist. I've seen kg5.5's go for $350 and a pair of smaller kg's go for $200? I recently bought a pair of Forte ii's for $250 (passives pushed in, veneer chipped, but they sound great with new domes/crossovers)
