  1. O.K. This may be a bit long but please bare with me. Some people today, especially youth, have a natural desire to know that they themselves are "o.k.". To reassure themselves, they feel the need to be respected. This can be achieved by either being loved or feared. Either way they get some sort of respect. With getting respect comes power and reassurance that the person in question fits into the group and is accepted into the group. If a person sees a group that he/she wants to be accepted into then he/she must first be noticed. Preferably by the desired group. And making that much noise while seeking a few compliments may be his/her only way they know of to get where they want to be. I personally feel that this is why you may see an unsavery looking youth being so obtuse to society (shaved head, wierd piercings, pants down to mid-thigh level, the bill of a hat pulled down hide their face, etc....) Now these people obviously gave up on feeling loved so they go after the feared angle. Hope everyone can follow this. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-06-2002 at 11:43 PM
  2. HornEd- At my regular job we transfer over the internet large text files of legal documents quite often. Sometimes they exceed the limit of the ISP by a meg or so. If we come across a file that big we'll use WinZip to compress the file to something managable (not quite half size). You can download a free evaluation version of it at http://www.winzip.com and look for Version 8.1 (I think). I would think most people that want to look at your photo should already have this freebee on their system. And if not...ay, it's free!! BTW- Welcome back! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-06-2002 at 10:19 PM

  5. quote: Originally posted by JCturboT: They told me it was one of the best tapes decks out there and has nakamichi internals. Jeff Jeff, Wow, don't tell people that own the Nak Dragon LOL!! Actually being overhalled was a bit of a slight exageration but I'm sure if you send it to Yamaha (yes, they do that) they'll give it a good goin' over. Don't be surprised if it costs a few hundred to have done. It needed a good cleaning of all the dial and slide pots as well as both pinch rollers and capistans. I replaced the main drive/play belt myself but had to get one from Yamaha direct (I think $18+shipping, ouch!). An almost small, local, "mom and pop" shop called Blue Chip Electronics put in two idler wheels (it lost the FF/RR all together about three months ago). The deck did sit dormant for about three years and since then I've been sort of listening to it again...well...I just remember it sounding a little crisper. I dunno it could be that my ears are spoiled from that McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD player. The total bill was about $88 which I thought was a steal considering I was planning to drop about $200 on it. I bought mine as a floor model from the store I worked at for about $380 (employee friendly discount) in 87' also when it was selling for $450. Yes, it is definitely the best deck I will probably ever have. Post Script- I take back what I said about the deck not sounding crisp. I just haven't adjusted the output stage which, until now, was being a bit over-saturated (read Clipped). The last tape or two I made was recorded a little hot also(too much signal level). Man, I gotta get some metal TDK MA-90's to make a good referance. I've got an e-mail out to TDK about availability of 90min over the 110min. This deck just doesn't like anything over a 90. Now I see how many compulsory adjustments get forgotten when one plays too many cd's. LOL ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-06-2002 at 10:52 AM
  6. I bi-wired my KLF- 20's and did find a difference. Of course I threw a few other wrenches in to the equation as well. 1) The wire I upgraded from was 14ga. Woods (lamp cord) wire to MIT Terminator2 Bi-wire. An over $500 MSR difference. 2) The front end equipment has a bit to do with this as well. The better your equipment is to begin with the greater the noticeable difference. 3) According to a well-known speaker cable manufacturer, the greater the resistance difference between the LF drivers and HF drivers the greater the noticeable difference. i.e.-8ohms for the LF and 6.8 ohms for the HF would not be as noticeable as 8ohms for the LF and say 4.2ohms for the HF. Just something I read. Here's a quote from StraightWire: BI-WIRING ALWAYS MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE Many speakers today have double sets of binding posts which allow for bi-amping or bi-wiring. The audible benefits of Bi-amping - Vertical (one amp for right speaker, other for left) or Horizontal (one amp for LF, another for mids & highs) are usually clear. Bi-wiring is especially useful when the characteristic impedance varies between the high & low frequency segments of the speaker (i.e. 3 ohm & 8 ohm). It helps reduce the effects of backflow EMF which can smear HF details. If the characteristic impedance is close- the benefits of bi-wiring might not be as clearly audible. It is better in most systems to connect with a single run of a high quality cable than to Bi-wire with two lower quality cables. Hope this helps! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-05-2002 at 04:28 PM
  7. Hey Charlie- I guess you know that your signature's moniker is VERY similar to an REO Speedwagon album, "You can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish" http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000051Y0I/qid=1012918870/sr=2-3/ref=sr_2_11_3/103-1789949-4076655 Just thought you'd like to know ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  8. I was even looking for a big floppy sweatshirt but didn't see one in the store. Hey marketing dept!! Ya listnin'?? ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  9. Boomis- The Maxell ad your talking about is called "Blown Away". There is a reproduction of that same poster from Steve Steigman of The Wever Gallery. As for the making of cassettes? Well, yes they do but I use mainly Metal bias cassettes for the car. I refuse to dive into the car/cd player ring. I just had my Yamaha K-1020 overhauled and yesterday I went looking for blank tape. The only ones I liked I could find were TDK MA-90. Fortunatley that's what the deck had the bias set to at the factory. As much as Denon is revered on this BB they don't make any at all. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-03-2002 at 03:56 PM

  11. There's a company called either DIY Cable or DIY Wire (I'm not sure which). They have a kit to make your own. I think MobileHomeless knows which it may be. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  12. quote: As for ole Mariah, lordy.... Just the other night when "The Price is Right" was having their 30th anniversery show there was an expose' show in the same time slot on E!. Towards the end they were talking to some of the later Barker's Beuties. Gena Lee Nolin!? Heather Kozar!? and a few others who's name excape me for now. This had me busting a gut getting to my computer and fefering to all the nude screensavers that have been installed. http://www.screensavershot.com ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-02-2002 at 10:26 AM
  13. You're right Fini. I wouldn't want to hurt any fish putting speaker wire on the end of a hook. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  14. Mike, I feel like an IDIOT!! The amp is fine. I switched cables and amp channels and that didn't seem to help. I was down to the drivers themselves. Partially blown?? Never heard of it on a woofer but then again, who am I? Anyway, got down and dirty again and decided to swap the woofers from left to right cabinet to see if the problem follows. Put it all back together and it sounds FINE!!! Plenty of bass! The only thing I can think of is that when I rewired the internals of cabs I got two wires on one woofer out of phase. That's the only thing that makes sence now. The right channel (the problem one) still has a teeny-bit less bass to it but I'm betting (like Pete Rose) that it's because the left channel is supported by a corner (two walls) and the right has only one wall. When the girlfriend gets rid on some of this ugly furniture (party pit couch that takes up an entire wall) I can once again puth the system back on the short wall where both speakers have a two walled corner. Man, I hope I'm not getting overly excited about a "fix" if it turns out no to be the problem. Kinda like putting on a new water pump on the car and finding out after four hours of work (I had more) that it wasn't the cause of the over-heating problem. Now I just have to figure out how to fix a stripped screw hole in the motorboard. Trying to save some skin on the ol' paws I used a cordless drill to take all the screws out and put them back. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-01-2002 at 11:43 PM

  16. Well, the network wasn't the problem. I guess I'll have to order two woofers Monday. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  17. Just got th enew crossover at work today. I'll use a bunch of alligator-jumper clips to see if that's the problem before it gets soldered in. Let's Hope. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  18. And Rush is losing his hearing. I wonder if there is a period coinciding with that and his promotion of the Wave Radio. Hmmmm.... ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  19. Good-- I've got a C33 and love it, even if it is twenty years old. The Outputs one and two are for additional amps and they can be switched on and off via the front panel. Thusly they are dependant on the volume control. The center channel idea is viable but, as you may know, it won't be a dedicated true center channel if the program has a track for one. Between the two (C32 or C33) the 33 has better stats as far as quality of sound. The only problem I came accross on mine was the variable Loudness control will produce a hiss the lesser the loudness is turned up. When it's turned off there is no hiss. Go to http://www.sundial.net/~rogerr/preamps.htm#c32 and just below it is the C33. Good luck! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  20. I too remember the days of the mini-dragstrip that always appeared on my street on weekends (long, flat & straight). The smell of exhaust from a curburator set too rich was something I forgot about. One day a few months ago I was walking to my office and saw a Buick GS (black over yellow) drive pass and I thought "Now that's been taken well care of". Till the two-billion hydrocarbons made it to my lungs. Gasp... It did give a new appriciation for technology, not that I praise the government a whole lot for the emmisions junk they legislated to enforce a new era. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  21. Nah, haven't tried any yet. I wouldn't know what titles were out there. I once got an e-mail from Frank Gow (Gordon's son)at Audio Classics saying that McIntosh never did dive head long into any new formats until it's been well established and accepted. Oooopps! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  22. Ray, You got me thinkin' a bit. I went out to the livingroom and looked and sure enough, the McIntosh MVP-841 is indeed labled " DVD / VIDEO CD / CD PLAYER". ------------------ Tom's Money Pit

  25. I still think the 501 Series III from the early 80's was really a room dehumidifier. Does anyone know of some sort of archive of pictures for old Bose stuff? This message has been edited by tblasing on 01-30-2002 at 02:10 PM
