  1. I believe I remember seeing him mention something like that.
  2. Mike, I forgot to follow up on your question. The wires coming from teh transformer are bare and a reddish copper color. From the board there are three holes they come from. Really there's four wires but two of them are coming from the same hole on the board and twisted together. The other two come from there own hole and attach to a different place on the transformer. Those are the ones that were touching each other. Odd though, I agree that there should have been a burnt smell somewhere but I couldn't find one. Hey Al K. ya listening to this? I could sure use some insight!! ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton P888SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 3. Thanks John, I took you advice and took out both woffers. Then disconnected one lead from each one and tested for continuity at the connection tabs. There was positive continuity on both woofers so I guess the voice coils are fine. I figured that only one lead needed to be disconnected to create an open circuit (there should be a dope-slap on my head in there somewhere). After it got put back together I played something though them and there was no change (just in case there was a cold solder joint). When I had the crossover out before I touched up all the speaker connections there as well. Still scratchin' the ol' coconut...
  4. Thanks Mike, I goofed, the capaitor I mentioned is light green not blue. Anywho, I don't see any buldging or see any leakage. The only thing that comes close is the stringy residue from teh hot glue they use to hold things in place on the board. The biggest thing I saw that was wrong was that the three copper wires from transformer were all touching each other. I seperated them but it still has the same problem. Could this have permanantly shorted out the transformer? I ordered another crossover today at a cost of $86 (ouch!) I hope it comes already mounted on the terminal plate. I've also got the feeling that I'm gonna have it out with Uncle's Stereo in NYC. Uncle's told me back when I bought them that they have a factory warranty. They don't. They just have an Uncle's Warranty. I'll see how far push comes to shove with Uncle's reimbersing me. (not holding my breath) This message has been edited by tblasing on 01-29-2002 at 05:10 PM
  5. All right guy, here we go. I've got a pair of KLF-20's. About two weeks ago I noticed that the right channel is not putting out the SPL in LF range that the left channel is. The woofers still move but they don't have nearly as much bass as the other channel. Here's what I've done so far to pin point the problem. 1) Switch the preamp to "Stereo Reverse". Same problem in same speaker. 2) Swapped speaker cables at the amp. Same problem in same speaker. 3) Physically swapped whole speaker (man these are heavy) since left channel has two walls behind it and right side only has one. Problem speaker in new position has same problem. 4) Removed crossover and looked for loose or broken connections. None I could see. Did find all three copper wires going to the transformer touching each other. Seperated those. Smelled for burnt components on crossover board. None. Reassembled. Same speaker, same problem. Could the (light blue) capacitor be shot? Any other test short of swapping crossovers would be welcomed (that would be a tremendous amount of soldering). Thanx. 7. The continuity test should be enough to tell you if it's bad or not. No continuity = no contact. No contact = no complete circuit. No complete circuit = signal not getting to where it should go. Something else to look for is if the bad diaphram's (this is what your actually replacing) copper winding is a dark, tarnished, burnt looking. 11. O.K. Matt- I paid for that car cash while working for a near minimum wage job selling items to allow Americans to exercise their Second Amendment Right: guns. Payments?? I had none. It was $18,100.00 out the door (literally). It took two years and half of every paycheck to do it. I bought it to restore my other car, a 1986 Shelby Charger Turbo (Blue over Silver and 1 of 387 built). How many totally stock 4-cyl. cars do you know of that can white wall the tires in third gear?? And guess what?? The BD bodied cars from DSM (Diamond Star Motors in Normal Illinois) are a direct decendant from Carol Shelby's handywork. My 94' has 77k trouble-free miles on it now and I expect it to go at least twice that more. By the way Matt, what are you driving that we should be so envious about? 12. Besides, I would personally cringe at the thought of cutting into a pair of pre-terminated cables (i.e.- MIT Terminators). That is if that's what you are looking at, or something similar. If not, go for the random lengths. It would be like watching a movie in realtime that was shot 200 frames per second versus 250. Unless the two comparing values being measured are faaarrrrr different in their relationship you won't notice the difference. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton P888SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette (getting an overhaul) dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 16. First "system". It was some fold-up portable record player that was blue and green, that's all I remember from 1966. Then 1969- The Sears all in one unit, tuner and turntable. Speakers looked like cigar boxes on end with sewing thread coming out the back. Oh yea, that was the speaker wire. 1975- The Hitachi all in one unit. Tuner, turntable and cassette. Purdy brushed aliminum face and blue neon lights. Then there's the unit. Was givin to me by the owners in 1980 (my parents). Developed an unexplained loud squeel, till I slammed the unit down on my dresser top to make it quit. Mean while my two brothers are building there monster systems. One system was mounted into a DIY desk/console that, honest to God, looked like the f**king starship Enterprise. Man I wish I had pictures, most of it was rack mounted. It had BGW 202 preamp, SAE 2700b EQ, SAE active crossover, dbx 118, SAE 5000, 2-Phase Linear 400's bi-amped, Technics SL-1200 turntable, old H.H. Scott receiver used for a tuner, an Ampex 300 six head reel to reel and JBL L-300 speakers (the size of a small stove) with Altec Lansing woofs. Does anyone remember the EV Interphase D's? Some of this stuff came from good ol' DAK Industries mail order. 1983- I stared working for a local department store, Swallen's. Started out buying a Technics SA-411 (45 wpc) receiver, Technics SB7 spekers (flat aluminum drivers with Heil tweeters, still got em' in storage), Numark 2100 EQ, Teac V-33 and Technics RS-M236 cassette, SAE 5000 (in storage and in perfect shape!), dbx NX-40, Sony SB-300 switch box, dbx 200, dbx-3BX II, H.H. Scott 830z analyzer (won't part with that for nuttin'), Technics SL-D350 turntable (a P-Mount mind ya!), Sony CDP-111s CD Player, then Technics SB3 rear speakers. Sounded good to my not yet quite tuned ears in a bedroom that was 10' x 12'!! Oh yea! Koss Pro4AA's for $24.99 in 1982 (still in storage, good wiring but deflated ear cups)!! And finally a pair of Yamaha YH-1 headphones. I was only there 18 months?! Went to run the Gun Dept. and started another expensive hobby. 1988-Graduated to a Yamaha PF-800 turntable with a Sure V15 Type V, a Carver MX-150 Receiver, BSR w/rta EQ, Yamaha K-1020 cassette (getting overhauled as we speak), Yamaha NS-W1 subwoofer, and some other remnants of the above system. 2000-Now at the system listed below. 17. This has been a funny thread. First a question on cable routing. Then a reference to someone's signature, then a fireams discussion. Finally back to a related topic of home theater. This is great! Justin- Yes I'm very much on "our" side (more grey area to ponder). A little crazed, but on "our" side. Now where did I put that English dictionary. AND GIVE ME BACK MY DETONATORS!! Dispite the futuristic looks of the Steyer AUG, I do agree it doesn't leave a whole lot of room for personal changes the owner would want to make. The fixed mounted scope tops the list. Not sure if I could get used to the magazine being inserted into the bottom of the shoulder stock. http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hall/5996/aug.htm If anyone has one that needs extreamly long term reviewing just sent your AUG to Tom Blasing (pronounced 'Blazing' and yes, that's my real name!!)c/o the Blammo Ammo Co. 18. Well...ah...the Steyer AUG is an assault rifle and I don't doubt they were used in the movie. But Mr. Takagi (spelling?) was executed with the P7-M8 also the head vilain (God, I wish I could remember his name) put his handgun on a ledge before he climbed around a corner where he met some of the would-be hostatges (or was it Bruce Willis). The head villain wanted to go back where his gun was and made up some story to do so (he never did in that scene). The camera crew made a nice close up of it on the ledge. Here's a picture, notice the squeeze-c*o*c*k mechanism (the one I shot took quite a bit of strength to c*o*c*k and shoot steadily. Darn automatic text sensors, I can't even say how to charge the weapon without getting requoted. http://www.hecklerkoch-usa.com/pages/civilian/p7frameset.html . Anyway, as nice as a Steyer is I don't think could use it for concealed carry . BTW-The Sig Sauer P228 isn't available to the public anymore. Has to do with some military contract. 21. UP- Well, the Class I designation is limited to (long list) non-fully-automatic arms that hold no more than 10 rounds (for semi-auto handgun), 10 rounds for semi-auto rifle (doesn't matter if it has a detachable magazine, tube magazine or whatever) and 5-round limit for semi-auto shotgun. Myself?? I own a Sig Sauer P-228 and a P-210 Olympic grade. The 228 is current house centry (seeing I havn't trained our cat to attack on command yet) loaded with Winchester's (now banned for sale but the slug is a different color and going under a different name: wink) Black Talon 147gr. HP. I once shot my .45ACP with Black Talon ammo into a wet grocery bag stuffed with newspaper. To say the least the uniformity of the expansion is quite impressive. Yes the laws is some parts of the world a IMHO simply ludicrice. Thankfully, Cincinnati just had a judgment by a small group of plaintiffs that are pushing to declare the "no consealed cary" law as unconstitutional. But thats a debate all by itself. My favorite one to get hold of to buy would be a Heckler & Koch P7-M13 or at least the P7-M8. You can see one of those in Die Hard (first movie), the head villain carried one. For rifles, and for small annoying game around the house, currently on duty is a Remington 541-HB .22lr. But I would rather have a Remington 40-XBBR, but who wants to carry around all that weight? 24. For whatever realistic or psychological applications apply to this, here is an idea to keep in mind. Which one would have the most contact area from the wire to the post? Bananas? Spades?
