  1. Groom made a pair of grills for my 84 Cornwalls that I converted to Cornscalas. He knows his stuff on grills!Herb
  2. Al- I have been playing around with a pair of JBL 2405 tweeters, talk about kick-*** dispersion. I don't have a meter to test them. Have you run any tests on the 2405? Herb
  3. My 12 inch sticks out into space (set up, I know). I put it on the left side of my rack to protect it. I have a larger plinth and a dust cover on my to do list. I envy your khorns. I wish I had good corners for them. I think the thorens, mcintosh, klipsch combination is hard to beat. Hey Pete!I see you run a MC2105 along with the tube monoblocks. Are you bi-amping the woofers with the 2105 on the Cornscalas? Herb
  4. I sent my MX110 to him and he really did a great job! He replaced about 25 caps and resistors and that really cleaned up the sound. I think the combo of the MX110 and MC240 is a winner. He is worth the wait! Herb
  5. Wow! I've been at this for 40 years and I am just getting to where you are. Nice![Y] I have two TD-124's that have SME 3009 Series II Unimproved arms (a long story). The MX110 does not have a phono stage that accomodates a low output moving coil, so I checked with Frank Gow at Audio Classics and he recommended the Dynavector DV20XH. Frank is the son of Gordon Gow of McIntosh fame. His number is 607-766-3501. He is a great source for bulbs for the MX110 too! It is a high output moving coil and for the money it sounds wonderful, a very nice match for the MX110's phono stage. I would like to get an Ortofon SPU for my other table, but they cost about a grand and need a phono amp so that is something I am putting off for now. I strongly recommend the Dynavector! How do you like the K-horns powered by the MC240? I recently built a pair of Cornscalas and run them with an MC275 MkIV. I have heard that lower wattage Mac amps sound great with Klipsch heritage speakers. I originally wanted to use either the MC 225 of MC240 with my Corncalas but came across a great deal on the MC275. Good luck with your search. Have fun! Herb
  6. OK, I know that by now you must have listened to them.... What is the verdict???? Herb
  7. There are always a couple of TD124's on ebay. You can find them in rought shape for about $500-$600, but nice one's with Ortofon arms and plinths go for $2000 to $4000. They are a joy to restore and are totally mechanical so do not be afraid to get one that needs work. I use a Shure SME 3009 Series II arm and Dynavector MC cartridge on mine.
  8. I agree! Best $$ I ever spent on speakers. Replacing the stock squawker with a wooden horn made a huge difference in mine. Got them from Gothover. The next (and cheapest) upgrade is to get a pair of CT-125 tweeters from Bob Crites. Finally, you will need new crossovers. You can get components from Bob and build your own, or I think Bob sells those as well. You will not believe the difference! Herb
  9. Lookin good, Dave! BTW, I hope you used only "stock" Fastlane components in this project.[] Herb "ILITM" Klinker
  10. Midrange for me too. But my bottom's getting bigger by the day! Herb
  11. John, There is a small ring that holds the screen in place. Take a small safety pin and stick it into the screen slightly, near the edge. You will have to pull the screen out of that ring and it takes a little pulling to remove it. You may also insert a small screw a couple of turns into the screen, but I had better luck with the pin. It's a one-way modification, as you will see. They won't go back in once they're removed. Many members swear that it makes a noticable difference in the sound, but frankly I could hear little difference. Sometimes I think we get caught up in wishful listening, but after all, it can't hurt the sound! Good Luck, Herb
  12. Cornwalls are an amazing speaker. I have attached a article from Dope from Hope written in 1968 that describes the "Golden Mean Room". I use mine in a room that's 22X15, but I like to put them on the long wall about 8 ft. apart and sit fairly close. I do not like them in the corners as the direct radiators tend to be boomy. 13. I'll be interested in your findings, keep me updated.Dave Headed to the Shack tomorrow to pick up the switches. Too pretty outside today to work on speakers!Herb
  14. I'm going to rig up a SPDT switch this weekend and try it out just setting the tweeter on top of the Cornscala. If it sounds good I'll get back to you on my box idea.Herb
  15. Having owned a Marantz 2270 when they came out in the early 70's I can say they are a nice sounding amp. I went from that to a Dynaco kit to a Mac C-28 preamp with a MC 2105 amp and I'll tell you there was noooo comparison. That being said, if your goal is to switch to tubes, then I would have you consider the Mac 230 integrated amp right off the bat. You don't need massive power to drive Cornwalls, this amp will do nicely. They don't bring the exorbitant prices that the separates bring on eBay, and it's highly regarded by people who know, like Terry Dewick. They show up on ebay quite often, and won't bankrupt you.
  16. I've attached the spec sheet on the 2405. My concern is that I might have to go higher on the Xover to match the freq response of the tweeter. This could ask too much of the K-55?2405.pdf 2405.pdf
  17. Dave, Like this alot! I've been thinking... I know, "uh oh". Seriously though. I've got these JBL L65's sitting around with a killer tweeter (the 2405) in them. They won't fit in the space where the CT-125's go but if I had a nice wooden box for them like you did in this project I could outboard them and then have a toggle to switch them with the other tweeter. I can do the finish work but am not really up to the construction part. I would like to have a faux art deco look for the box, sort of like an old table radio from the 30's. What ye think? Herb
  18. Wendell Fabrics sells both the cane and the black cloth. They have a two yard minimum, and if you buy less than 5 yds. there is a shipping charge (about $10 I think). Herb
  19. Well guys, my brains have officially exploded! Time to grab the gin and vermouth.
  20. Greg, Classic, stunning! Very art deco! Herb
  21. Unless you are getting a buzz (literally, not figuratively) from the passive I agree with wuzzzer. New crossovers made a big difference in my Cornscalas but can't speak to the diaphram issue, except that I've seen many positive posts regarding the titanium tweets. Have fun!
