I don't know the difference in pentode and triode sound, but I fail to see how removing it from an amp designed around it would cause anything but sucky results.

The latest upgrade returns the K-horns to nearly the same configuration you have now. The new tweeter is quite similar to the K-77-M (you should have K-77s) and is likely a better tweeter than yours, but not by much. It has 1.5 dB less output, too. The newest squawker driver IS the same as yours. You would benefit most by building a set of crossovers using premium parts, like Hovland Caps and Solen inductors. Other brands are likely as good. You can duplicate the Type AA you have, minus the zener diodes (KLiP circuit), buy/build a pair of Al K's excellent xovers, design your own (we'll help), or build a hybrid of some of the Klipsch networks. The Type A network was Mr. Paul's favorite and is very popular hear with the low power crowd. Many of us think the tweeter need better protection if you use moderate to high power amps. I use either Type AAs modifies with better caps, or ALKs, as my mood changes. Look around for crossover threads and you'll find schematics and opinions about each.

I'm not sure I'd call La Scalas boomy, but they are warm and give male vocals a boost in "authority". I use either Seal CD to demonstrate this. Mine are not braced, because I discovered the resonance in the bass horn walls after they were finished. They are too pretty to screw with, now. I believe either of your braces would be enough. Klipsch addressed the "warmth" in the Type AL-3 network with some EQ. You can modify your Type AAs to the Type AL-3 bass circuit easily. The change could be reversible. Only the inductor need be changed and caps added. Use air-core inductors and high quality caps. Please try this and report your findings. Klipsch built several braced La Scalas for HPS4000 for use in Theaters. The braces were similar to your internal braces. I don't know why the braces were not added to all La Scalas.

The front panel has the first few hundred mm of the bass horn attached to it. That becomes a set of braces that stiffen the panel. It is good that the panel does not vibrate; it should not.

Search Technical or Updating for the schematics. Then you can see what the differences between the two crossovers are. The AK-2 and AK-3 are quite similar and both should sound pretty good if they are working properly. The AK/AL/AB networks are the really bad ones. If you rebuild yours (or just build new ones) using polypropylene film and foil caps and premium air-core inductors, they will sound noticibly better. The cost is why Klipsch did not use those components until the 2002 K-horn (Type AK-4 network).

It IS hard to mate subwoofers with horn systems. Most powered subs have much higher distortion than the La Scala's bass horn. That said, the size and length od a La Scala's bass horn limit the low bass. In a corner they will begin to roll off below 60 Hz and the output falls pretty fast. If you want to go deeper, a big, clean subwoofer(s) is the only way. There are some "J" shaped horn subs out there that are roughly 2 feet x 4 feet x 8 feet that would certainly work. I like my 2 subs and Acurus amp.

They look like 2001 models to me (first 2 digits). Are they very new? Please post pictures. The KBW "type" has me puzzled. I would expect to see KBWO for Klipschorn, Style B, Walnut, Oil, or something similar. Maybe the lacquer finish (L) is no longer available. If you are willing, please remove the woofer access door and post a picture of the crossover.

Hi Gil, I just noticed your question. The Type AL was used begining in 1982 when the K-55-M was first used. It was used in the La Scala for several years, but I'm not sure how many. I have never hears of a Type AL-2, so I believe it was used until the 90s when the AK-3 and AL-3 were issued. Since those 2 are so similar, I think AL-2 may have been skipped. The Type AL has a howl-ly sound around 300 Hz and something that makes it indistinct, probably ringing. Dynamat did not help my '87s much. Little brother has them now with the crossover we designed and they sound very nice in his room. I'm not a country music fan, but Trisha Yearwood has a beautiful voice and his system does it full justice.

The W is 1981 and the 26 is supposed to be the 26th day of 1981; 721 is the sequential number for that day. There are other numbering schemes depending on the year. What is the complete number from one of them?

I guess I'm not too surprised to hear that her recordings are used at CES. Besides the way it sounds, her voice has been so well recorded and mastered that I was instantly drawn to it. Have any of you heard she is going to marry Elvis Costello?! How could THAT happen? You are welcome to the recommendation. I was hoping others would enjoy her as much as I do. Also check out Nora Jones. Andy (HDBRBuilder) played her CD for us in Indy on his gorgeous Heresies. That is a well recorded CD, too.

Changing the impedance by 2 changes the crossover frequency by 2, but I can't remember which way a low pass filter goes. However, the K-33, while a 4 ohm driver, behaves as a 6 ohm driver in a La Scala, Belle, or K-horn bass horn. If I were you, I'd calculate the corssover components using 12 ohms for the K-22-EF in a bass horn. I like to use http://www.carstereo.com/help2/Articles.cfm for crossover calculations.

You need to make sure the Klipschorn is firmly against the walls of the corners, too. I don't understand: "i don t understand the reason of my probleme because i already change my 15 inch klipschorn speaker,i buy it from the original klipsch compagny". Your K-horns should have Klipsch K-33 woofers inside. The latest and best is the K-33-E. If you have anything else, it is not the right woofer. Are the woofer chambers well sealed? Are your crossover networks unmodified? If they are modified, was it done correctly? a mismatch between the woofer and squawker (midrange) will sound like there is no bass. Klipschorns do not have the bloated bass popular in many speakers sold today. Are they new to you? If they are, listen to well recorded acoustic music and see if they do not sound totally real.

Yes, Lynn, Thanks! I've talked Cobalt Cable (www.cobaltcable.com) into making a set of db25 to 8 RCA plugs for my upgraded ACT-3 so I can listen to DVD-A. I wanted to make sure they were not the ones before I ordered. i don't wnat that kind of hassle.

The Type AL has a 2nd order high pass on the squawker and maybe some EQ; the Type A & AA have a first order. You must change to the values of the A/AA if you want that type of configuration. I believe you can reuse the T3 autoformer. I'd try before I'd buy another autoformer. Both the Type A & AA sound good IF you take out the zener diodes the AA has on the tweeter. If you use premium components either the A or AA will sound great. The Type A has little to protect the tweeter from too much power, though. That's why I offered the DHA design. It will also attenuate the tweeter 1 dB to recreate the Type AA voicing.
