  1. A friend has a set he wants to trade for some interconnects and I am wondering what the crossover looks like. Anyone have a copy of the schematic? I figure these would be really nice for my brother's TV/Stereo easy to drive with his rebuilt Quad 405 and not too large. What is it about Klipsch speakers you get into them and then they just start turning up everywhere. It's like a virus. Best regards Moray James.
  2. most of the time speakers are damaged by small amps clipping which generates tremendous amounts of distortion and that's where the heat comes from that melts the voice coil.Big amps which are not driven into clipping are safer to run. Note; if you hear your speaker start to distort due to being over driven turn it down and all will be right with the world. Given the high efficiency of Klipsch speakers your ears should give up before your speakers do. Most bar bands in my local run at an averaage of 90 db which is plenty loud and your Klipsch will do that easily all day with not a worry.Wether you like the sound of either of the two amps you have mentioned is up to you but in general amps that don't clip sound great. Best regards Moray James.
  3. Not sure about your desired configuration. You said the speaker was too bright. Why don't you try a 39-40 ohm resistor parallel with the tweeter and put the midrange back to stock position. See what you think, this should smooth things out. Best regards Moray James.
  4. That's great did the same with m son he is 20 now has a couple of guitars still plays has a lot of fun. The inexpensive enty level guitars can be very good these days. Not a lot of money but the look great and work very well. Best regards Moray James.
  5. Thanks Dennis that's kind of what I thought. I have contacted Klipsch to see if they can tell me what the base plastic of the horns is to save a little time experimenting. With the right solvent they ought to be good as new and some washers installed should provide a little insurance for the long haul. Best regards Moray James.
  6. Thanks John yes that is an option butI would like to see if there are possible altenates to that. Have written Klipsch to find out if they actually know what base plastic is used in the horns as that would be a help to either solvent welding or adhesive repair. Otheres here may have attempted this themselves. Makes me think that flat steel washers under the mounting screws is probably a very good idea to spread the load on the horn mounting flange. Could be an inexpensive way to prevent trouble down the road. Best regards Moray james.
  7. A buddy has a couple ot Klipsch tweeter horns which have developed cracks at some of the mounting holes. Has anybody here had any sucess with repair? My first toughts were professional plastic welding, solvent welding and plastic epoxy repair in that order. Direction to sucessful repair techniques or products would be most welcome. Regards Moray James.
  8. Thanks buddy those look great. The clear and gold also are impressive ooooo I want more but two sets will have to do. Thank you for making this possible. Best regards Moray James.
  9. nice axe in the corner whatcha got there ? Best regards Moray James.
  10. you can look to see if you have noise sources in your place such as halogen lamp transformers, mercury reed switches as used in thermostats waterbed heaters, compact floursents lamps could also make RF noise anything with a switching supply or old motors on a pump or furnace might be a source as could be loose make / break electrical connections. Any new cell towers in your area? Best of luck. Regards Moray James.
  11. Miighty Favog: if you have blown three mid diaphragms in a month I think it is a good time to look at your amp. This is like having your main power fuse blow three times and wondering what is wrong with these fuses? You may not be playing music at a high level but if your amp has developed an oscilation it could be dumping a lot of current into your speaker(s). Is it the same channel each time? You could also have a look at your crossover to see if anything there looks heat distressed. This is not a normal situation and the likelyhood of all three diaphragms being problematic is not probable. Good luck in your search to find the problem. I am sorry that it has cost you so much already. Best regards Moray James.
  12. Forte ll runs K75K tweeters and K61K mids so yes they will drop in. You have your choice of Bob Crites new phenolic mid diaphragms or klipsch's new Titanium mid diaphragm. Upgrade your crossovers and you (your family) can have an outdoor dance at your funeral with them.
  13. sure the pick up could just as easily be at the criossover and it could also be wrapped as well as long as you used a plastic bag to insulate the foil from the components.Once the speakers are connected to the amp then there is a ground. You would want to insure that the components don't get too hot in the bag. Might be worth trying just to see if it makes for a fix. Weird science at work in his house. A guy does not need a microwave where he lives. Flash "Dead speaker designer invents free power source (also doubles as a mid range horn)" Best regards Moray James.
  14. Contact Noel Nolan at Skylan stands he can build you exactly what you want and need. Noel's stands are exceptional value superb quality and exceptional design. Best rergards Moray James. http://skylanstands.com/
  15. Sounds like an X-File episode, too strange. Why don't you try something simple first. Wrap the mid drivers 100% in tin foil and then use an insulated wire with a small alligator clip at each end to attach the tinfoil wrap to the speakers negative (ground terminal. If that fails to work you could always try adding a series resistor or even a resistor and cap to filter out the noise. Might be worth a try as this is RF pick up so a shield ought to work and this would be way cheaper and less intrusive than power line conditioners for your gear. Good luck buddy.
  16. In the interest of simplfying things it would be best to sell these Forte ll speakers intact after Al is done testing them. The speakers will be sold for my cost of $400.00 plus $40.00 for transit to Al for a total of $440.00 pick up only no shipping from Salisbury Maryland. The speakers will have stock factory crossover and all factory drivers. If you want a new set of Al's crossovers please deal with Al directly. (I can't think of a better set of speakers to match with Al's new crossovers). Time frame for pick up is minimun one month max two months from now. Please contact asap so we can make arrangements in advance. Thank you, regards Moray James.
  17. Al sells his Forte upgrade crossover kit for a reasonable price. You can check out his site at ALK Engineering Regards Moray James.
  18. I have for sale a set of oak cabinets for a pair of Forte ll with grills and terminalcups/crossovers, no drivers, must be a PICK UP ONLY in Salisbury Maryland. Time frame is for pickup within one to to months. I just purchased these from a member here last week and they are now in Salisbury where Al Klappenberger is redesigning a new crossover for the Forte ll and expects that process to take a month or two. Once Al is done I would like to have the cabinets picked up from Al in Salisbury Maryland. The cabinets are in very good condition and come with grills, terminal cup and stock crossovers. I would like $100.00 to help offset the cost of this project. These were purchased so that Al could have a set of working speakers to do measurements on for the new crossover design process. A new home for these cabinets would be very much appreciated and would help as this has been a stretch for me. The Forte ll is a great speaker and Al's new crossovers will only make them better. I am sure that Al could use some support also in terms of crossover sales to make this project worth while. This is the second non Heritage design that Al has done. Given the availability of all new upgraded diaphragms (mid and tweeter) for the Forte ll this is an excellent opportunity for people to down size save money and have better speakers. I simply want to upgrade mine. I would like to thank Al for with out his support and assistance this project would not be happening. Thank you Al you are a true gentleman. If you would like a new set of Al's Forte ll crossovers that will have to be negotiated with Al directly but I am sure he would be happy to accomodate you at that time. Best regards Moray James. http://community.klipsch.com/forums/t/142819.aspx ....... see pictures of the cabinets from the original owner here.
  19. You might want to look into a set of PPSL bass cabinets. PPSL stands for push pull slot loaded. That ought to be less overall volume compared to a Khorn. DJK on this forum has experience with this cabinet design. There was also a thread on this at diyaudio. Good luck, regards Moray James.
  20. have a look at Dave's ported Heresy speakers looks like a worth while project as it is built and tested. Happy Christmas. Regards Moray james. http://mysite.verizon.net/res12il11/id76.html
  21. you can contact Greg at Volti Audio, he has a set on ebay at the moment. Regards Moray James. voltiaudio.com

  23. I looked at the home site but did not see them there. Seems to me I did see them posted on this form some time ago. I would expect that the response graphs would not tell you much as they probably look almost identical. The difference was a larger passive from the Forte to Forte ll along with the upgrade to the Tractrix mid horn while the Chorus went from reflex vents to a 15" passive and the same Tractrix mid horn.Adding vent tubes to a Chorus (around 7 inches long) is an easy woth while upgrade which can be reversed if so desired.Regards Moray James.
  24. Ironsave: exactly that a thrift store find happened recently to a fellow over on Audiokarma a pair of Forte ll for $20.00. Yes too good to believe. Regards Moray James. PS: it occurs to me it might be pushing it to hope to get 650 Hz. out of a pair of 12" or 15" in a PPSL design it could be close but it might work. I guess that is what diy is about. Certainly there are suitable drivers available which would be superior to stock Klipsch drivers to run in a reflex cabinet that would or could be substituted into a forte or a Chorus or a Cornwall for that matter. Daves new Fast track ellyptical horns look really good and probably sound fine too. No way to tell if they are better than stock without trying them.
  25. Well we did not discuss the larger baffle of the Cornwall which will help to launch a better wavefront at low frequencies. That said I think that Klipsch could build a PPSL Forte lll or Chorus lll and as from what I have read the nesting of the drivers in a PPSL decreases combined driver distotion enough to permit the use of less expensive drivers. The smaller cabinets means that for a given material the cabinet will be stiffer. So it probably could be cone and be a more cost effective and better performing speaker. Keep the new design reflex loaded and you don't need to buy a passive radiator either just a vent. Big problem is that a PPSL design with 2x12 or 2x15 per cabinet are not going to be very pretty to look at. That alone would kill the product from a marketing point of view. Mass sales is what keeps any company alive. Look at the compromises that have been made in the Ref and Paladium lines to keep the visuals pleasing. Tall slim towers with multiple woofers to try to make up and two ways to eliminate the mid horn because the market research says horns are honky and not pleasing to look at and that the added cost of the horn/driver is high so lets just go with one horn. On it goes. If one could find a driver (12 inch) with paramaters which would build into a similar volume in a PPSL design and have the right roll off so no inductor would be required (done in some two way designs) a very nice speaker could be built but again not going to win over many wives in the looks department. A Heresy lV with a powered sub section would probably be the most acceptable compromize but that amp and crossover for the sub section is going to hurt you in the market place. That's why god made diy.
