  1. Regarding the higher capacity compact flash cards...Does anyone know if the 256/512 cards can be used in a camera where the camera's specs only show storage capacities up to 128? For example, the specs for the Canon S30 show capacities up to 128mb CF and 340mb Microdrive, but nothing for 256/512. Does that mean that the camera doesn't support them, or just that they weren't very prevalent at the time the camera's specs were put together (probably summer of '01)? 2. Dear Mr. Paul (and Miss Valerie, too) - On this day of your birthday, let me again express how much your work has brought so many moments of audible bliss to my life. Whether it was rock & roll, mellow jazz or classical, or just background music while cleaning the house, these speakers continue to bring me untold pleasure. You can take great pride in the legacy you have created. Thank you! And thank you, also, Miss Valerie for being such a wonderful supporter, ambassador and #1 fan of PWK. God Bless You Both! 3. Do you have a price range in mind? How do you feel about used? I have an Acurus 200wattx3 (which I hear was actually bench tested at about 315wpc) that I like a lot. You can find them for sale used at www.audiogon.com and sometimes other places including Ebay. Klipsch, who now owns the Acurus/Aragon line, was blowing them out on Ubid a while ago, and there are some reasonably priced barely used ones out there. MSRP new was $1500. 4. Probably no one cares, at this point , but I've added the Canon PowerShot S30 to my short list. It is a 3 megapixel with 3x optical zoom, and a slew of manual control capabilities (which my wife will like). Has the higher pixel count than the 2mp ELPHs, and the same 3x zoom as the S300 ELPH, but not the 6x of the Fuji 2800. However, it still is pocket-size, for that all important spontaneous shooting session. Anyone have any experience with this unit? Doug ------------------ My System
  5. There's only 1 - UBID. And they are only used to clear out excess/discontinued merchandise... Other dealers can advertise on-line, but only sell to customers to which they personally deliver using their own trucks (not UPS/FedEx/etc...) Doug ------------------ My System
  6. Hi MG - Like you, wish I was going to the signing this year. Not in the cards. Still have great memories from the trip last year -- not sure it can ever be duplicated. A first, ya know! Hi to Steve - Doug ------------------ My System
  7. Are there two line level (RCA) inputs on the sub? If so, I'd get a y-adapter and connect the single output from the receiver to both line-level inputs on the sub. In many cases, that boosts the output a bit. Is there a crossover knob on the sub? It might say something like "Low Pass." If not, disregard any comments about crossover settings -- you don't have one. If there is a crossover knob, I will respectfully disagree with our friend from across the pond and suggest you set the crossover on the sub to its highest number setting. That way it will not interfere with the crossover in the receiver. Doug ------------------ My System
  8. HT - Maybe your next upgrade should be "retro." Pick up a pair of used Heritage speakers that are fully horn loaded -- there's an upgrade you'll really notice! Some nice LaScala's would be a good starting point. Doug ------------------ My System
  9. "Is this new flagship model the best Klipsch has ever done?" Mike - You tryin' to start a war or something?? This phrase will appear in the dictionary as an example of "inflamatory." ------------------ My System
  10. "Perhaps the PW2200's will add something I'm missing in music and I won't have to switch! " I think you may be right about this. Personally, I use my SVS sub with all music and move listening. There is quite a bit of music out there with some very low bass, very subtle, which I would not hear without the sub on. Enya comes to mind. You might also play with the Direct setting on the Denon, as suggested by Stu P. I can't recall if it bypasses the sub and sends everything to the fronts. Doug ------------------ My System
  11. As SteveP predicted... If you've got the room for Cornwall fronts, go for them. While I love my KG4s, there is simply no comparison between them and the Forte/Chorus/Cornwall. They would make fine rear speakers, unless you are really going for the 5-channel audio thing (as opposed to 5-channel HT). In that case, they won't match very well with the F/C/C options. The KG4 is a 2-way design, and it does sound quite different from the others, which are 3-way. Probably the closest in sound to the KG4 would be the Forte. So, if it were me, I'd go for Cornwall/Chorus/Forte for the fronts, in that order of preference. (Unless, as mentioned, you really want the 5-channel audio setup, in which case move the KG4s to another room and use another pair of whatever you get up front.) If you have the room for a 3rd one of those to use as a center channel, in some configuration, go for it. Otherwise, it seems the Academy is the speaker of choice to match these 3. I've never heard that combination myself, though. I'm using a Forte as a center channel with my Chorus's. Sounds like a fun project! 12. Von - "I keep hearing about these Khorns are these better than the RF-7s? Never heard of them." Ohmygoshyes!!!! They have a sound that will transport you. You can see more about them here: http://www.klipsch.com/products/cutsheet.asp?id=15 Since you run a construction company, be sure to build nice corners into your buildings to put these things in . Enjoy the RS-7s - nice!! Doug ------------------ My System
  13. Once again Keith and I are on similar ground (remember the AudioQuest Sidewinders, Keith?). Great info, Ed(s). Thanks for those tips. Since the 4 I listed are all about the same price (+/- $50), would you swing towards the Fuji due to the 6x optical (they all have 2megapixels)? One thing a user commented about, who owned the Canon ELPH, was that part of the fun of digital photography is being able to snap pix whenever you want, review them, and toss them if you don't want them, and the ELPH was well suited to that because of its small size, which made it easy to always have with you, ready to "capture the moment." A larger camera, in his opinion, was less likely to be with you (in your pocket, or whatever), thus decreasing the chances of taking fun pix. Interesting point. I guess I just have to prioritize my needs/wants and pick one best suited to that ranking. Doug ------------------ My System This message has been edited by dougdrake2 on 03-07-2002 at 02:03 PM
  14. PB - I have a Denon 3300, and I imagine the settings work the same. If you want to use the RF-7s alone for music, you'll have to set them to large or you'll miss all the bass below 80hz. Thus, if the mains are set to large, you have the option of doing LFE+Mains in the sub setting (wouldn't work if they are set to small). The LFE+Mains is really a misnomer, as it implies the LFE (.1) channel of 5.1 is only sent to sub and mains, when in reality I believe it is all frequencies less than 80hz that come from the small channels and the .1 that is sent to the sub and mains. Which setting to use? I think you'll have to try them both -- sub only or sub+mains -- and see which sounds best to you. Sub+mains might create some cancellation which would actually reduce the output in certain frequency ranges. You could try measuring the two settings with a test disk and an SPL meter to see the effect, and pick the one with the flattest/strong measurements. Too bad the Denon doesn't permit you to set different speaker sizes for different modes (large for stereo, small for HT, for example). At least my 3300 doesn't do that -- maybe your 3802 does. Doug ------------------ My System
  15. Derik - If the specs match and the price matches, they are probably the same with just a few cosmetic diffences. Denon, like Yamaha and several others, create different models for their "boutique" dealers and their relatively mass-market dealers (like Sears, Great Indoors, and others that escape me right now) just to help protect their channels. Harder for the average Joe to price shop Sears against Mr. Thurgood's House of Exquisite Sound when the model numbers are different! Also, they sometimes have slightly different warranties, so check those carefully. Doug ------------------ My System
  16. I'm evaluating 4 cameras for purchase now, and I am definitely in the "point and shoot" arena. Also needing to stay in a street price of around $400. I imagine the times when I will print an 8x10 picture will be rare. However, I realize that sometimes it's not about printing a larger version of an entire picture, but rather cropping a picture and blowing up the remaining area to a standard (say 4x6) size. How much is that affected by 2 vs. 3 megapixels? I am considering: 1) Minolta DiMage X - for its size and 3x optical 2) Fujifilm FinePix 2800 - for its 6x optical 3) Canon ELPH S110 - for its size, image quality, and 20fps video mode 4) Canon ELPH S300 - same reasons as S110 but also for 3x optical Any thoughts/suggestions/experiences are welcome! 17. Fini - A friend of mine had a pair of these (or were they Time Windows - Frames, Windows, Sliding Doors; who can keep them straight?) in the mid-80's. They sounded nice, but to me didn't have the clarity and openness of my beloved Klipsch. They remind me, in their appearance, of some Vandersteen and Def Tech designs, with a grill wrapped all the way around them. If it were me, I would give the museum floorspace to something more special... Doug ------------------ My System This message has been edited by dougdrake2 on 03-07-2002 at 10:36 AM
  18. Better call Klipsch at 1-800-KLIPSCH and ask them. You'll get a faster response than waiting for them to cruise by your post here -- mostly us civilians readin' this thang... Doug ------------------ My System
  19. Here's a thread that hits most of the items you are likely to run into. http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum4/HTML/002408.html I'm in the midst of refinishing my black Chorus speakers, using this info as a guideline. I've just tested it on the bottom of one of them -- here's what I've done: 0) Removed the grills and completely covered and sealed the front of the speaker using cardboard (used a piece from an old poster frame) and blue masking tape (the light adhesion stuff). Covered the back, and completely masked, using "two-ply" newspaper. 1) Cleaned the surface using a deglosser from Home Depot to remove any oil or whatever might have been on them before I acquired them. 2) Sanded lightly using 220 grit sandpaper. 3) Applied two light coats of Rustoleum 7777 spray, allowing one hour between coats. Am giving it 48 hours to cure, then will decide if I want to give it a wet-sand with 400 or 600 grit paper before the final coat. Looks pretty good so far, so I may not do that step. Since we are covering an already finished black surface, alot of the between-coat sanding is not necessary. The 7777 is a bit shinier than the factory finish, but I like it. Good luck! 20. Dave - I think you are wise to use a shelf to mount an Academy rather than putting the stress on the cabinet itself. One of the Klipsch folks told me that many of the speaker cabinets are not designed to support their own weight (except those specifically designed for wall mounting, like the SS-1, etc...). I used a shelf to hang a Forte rather than just putting eye hooks through the cabinet and hanging it on chains or cable. Doug ------------------ My System
  21. Great speakers! Any questions/comments? Doug ------------------ My System
  22. Looks like a well matched set of speakers, and that's the hardest part, so good work on that. If your room is very large, you might find a larger sub might give you more woofing. Doug ------------------ My System
  23. "I, for one, would gladly pay an generous shipping and handling fee for the opportunity of owning that slice of history... " HE - That has to be the most thinly veiled bribe I've ever seen (LOL) Doug ------------------ My System

  25. I have a Denon 3300, and experience the same thing. When the volume is set to "--" (lowest setting), it is relatively quiet. As soon as I bump it to the first volume setting (-60) or higher, there is a low, steady hiss. It is noticeable especially when there is no source material playing. I attribute it to the somewhat noisy pre-amp section of the Denon and to the efficiency of the speakers (Chorus - 101 db/w/m). I have heard others comment on this with their Denon's, and I think it is typical of their pre-amps. Doug ------------------ My System
