  2. I am using what is supposed to be the best of both worlds. Silver plated copper. The pure copper IC's I was using before were definitly brighter than the silver plated I am using now. Both cables are by an internet only company called Knukonceptz. The copper have a "grainy" kind of sound to them at the extreme top end while the silver have a slightly fatter midrange/upperbass. You can find proponents of both copper and silver out there, and each one can justify their position based on physics and elctron flow theory, etc. I think it comes down to what you prefer. While I am not an advocate of tuning a system by cable interchange, it is important to keep in mind the different effects the different types have on YOUR system and choose accordingly.

  4. Rumor has it, that at the recent trip to Klipsch many got to listen to what is supposed to be the new Premier 3 way and many felt the RF-7 still sounded better even though the RF7 is a 2 way design vs the Premiere's 3 way. It was said that the Premiere was still being spec'd out out and wasn't in final stage during the listening. Jerry Rappaport

I just love my RF7s but they are a bit pedestrian by comparison to the compition. I've promised myself a 7.1 Primere system for my 60th BD. Hopefully Klipsch can make it on time. Jerry R
  6. You don't have to spend even a few extra hundred. For around $200-250 you can get the Oppo DV97 which is rated by SECRETS as one of the absolute top performing upscaling players available at any price. I have one and I can report that it works well and appears to be well built.

  8. I agree you should try Dean's mods. I was a big a skeptic as anyone till a couple of months ago when I gave them a shot. Getting rid of the HF ringing really makes an incredible difference in the "musical involvement". Jerry Rappaport
  9. I once had the opportunity to audition the LS side by side with the RF7s in a dealers studio with the same amp powering each setup. The LS were setup in the corners and the 7's were on either side of the monitor screen in the center of the room. Was there a difference? Yes, of course there was a difference. Was the LS better?, no, just different. I think the originator of this thread is experiencing the same thing. Due to all the hype on heritage he expected something a quantum leap better than his RFs, and what he got was something a little better but mostly just something different. JR
  10. My listening room has no corners to put KHorns in. Therefore, the RF7 is a better speaker for me, since I can put it just about anywhere. In my case that is on each side of my monitor. I'm always amused when this discussion comes up. Both speakers ARE great accomplishments, but they are both built for different applications. There shouldn't be attempts at comparing them. The KHorns are a great speak for those who have the ideal room, deep pockets (unless one buys used) and a tolerant wife. The RF7s are best for the rest of us. To me that means that the RF7 is a better speaker since it fits more applications. Others may say that makes it pedestrian. The RF7 has done more RECENTLY to keep the Klipsch company healthy financially than the KHorn has, so if you were to ask the Klipsch CFO which is a better speaker, what answer do you think you would get? 11. I recently purchased a Shanling CDT100 player which has tube output and variable output control in 100 steps so that one can eliminate the need for a preamp. Although I have yet to try this option, I believe the tube output should provide the "softening" that some seek from a tube preamp and tube amps. Jerry Rappaport
  12. I too just went the dedicated CD player route after becoming disenchanted with "all in one" CD/DVD players. I've recently become the proud owner of a Shanling CDT100 which has four or five different types of output to choose from. It has upsampling, pcm, tube, upsampling tube, ss analog and upsampling ss analog outputs. So far the tube output wins. Unit looks great and it's futureistic appearance attracts a lot of attention from my son's 16 yo friends. It is purely single play and doesn't waste any processing power on programming. Jerry Rappaport
  13. Ok, she's had about 5 hours run in and is starting to open up quite a bit. I'm listening primarily on the tube analog output and the thought that comes to mind is that the sound is extremely well balanced. Not too warm, not too bright...just...well...musical!

Anyway, I would love to hear what you think of the Shanling and what mods did you get if any. jc ---------------- JC I received my T100 today and I must say that it is certainly a joy to look at...a definitive statement. I like the fact that few have heard of Shanling, then again I like exclusivity, to a degree. As for the sound, it's far too early to make any comments. It needs some run in time, which it is getting as I write this. I've chosen to go stock for the time being. I'll probably do some tube rolling next week, and somewhere down the road decide if bocu $$$$ worth of mods are really necessary. JR
  15. If you can wait one day, my Shanling should arrive tomorrow and I'll give you a comparo with the Jolida that left last week! Jerry Rappaport
  16. I'm one who has also operated my RF7s with different wattage amps. First 70wpc then to 125wpc then to 200 wpc (all Rotel). Each time I upgraded the sound from the 7s got less compressed at high spl. Everything just became "more" effortless. JR
  17. I went and listened to the Jolida, and I liked it. Then I saw (and heard) the Shanling T100 (another tube output player) and was blown away by both the aural and visual artistry. Jerry Rappaport
  18. Hey Imperfect If you think that the RF7 binding posts are weak, don't open the speaker. The XOver connection to the binding post will blow your mind with it's cost effectiveness. Jerry Rappaport
  19. I must throw in my $.02 as I have run my RF7s on 70wpc amps then 125wpc then 200wpc (all Rotel amps). I have to say that although the 7s did well with 70 then 125, there is no such thing as too much power as far as they are concerned. The more power I added the less compressed the 7s sounded at high SPL. With 200wpc, Dean's Mods and a Shanling T100 CD player in my over 6000 cu ft room the 7s are absolutely glorious and open at high SPL and intimate and detailed at low spl. Just add clean power! Jerry R
  20. I've had my Dean G Modded X-overs in about two weeks now and I still am marveling at the difference. Certain highs like small cymbal, bell and triangle notes just seem to float in mid air. I've all but abandoned my lovely ChorusII and Cambridge Audio 2 channel system in my library in favor of listening to 2 channel on my theater setup with the modified RF7s. I never knew how good my Rotel 1098 really is for 2 channel. I've ordered a much high(er) end CD player because I think that the one I currently have (Sony 300 disk changer) "stifels" what the RF7s can really do. There definitly was a break in period, but there wasn't anywhere near as dramatic a change after break-in as some would lead you to believe. Jerry R

Keep me posted on the changes, Im interested! Thanks for the info!!! ---------------- Kathy, The graininess wasn't obvious till I was able to hear the speakers without it! Jerry
  22. The RF7s have a nasty dip in impedance around the woofers resonant frequency that takes the speaker as low as 2.8 ohms. Some amps, even some very good ones can't handle that in stride without becoming less than perfectly stable. Your amp may or may not be a problem, and I wasn't implying that it was. I was just suggesting you be careful. JR
  23. ---------------- On 5/8/2005 11:48:01 PM jpm wrote: That's being a bit presumptuous isn't it? No offense Dean, but your crossovers are not critical to the RF7 for good sound. A nice option for some... yes... necessary for all... no ---------------- jpm I agree that upgraded crossovers are not critical to the RF7 sounding good. It's just some of us want them to sound the best they can. I was as skeptical as you until yesterday when I installed crossovers that DeanG had preped for me in my RF7s and RC7. The results were well worth the effort and expense. Highs are now much more liquid. The small graininess I had attributed to either my Rotel gear or my ICs is now gone and the bottom has taken on a new fullness. One aspect of performance I am surprised at is soundstage. It appears to have gotten wider, yet shallower at the same time. Perhaps this is something that will change over time and break-in. DeanG is just a facilitator, he's not really pushing his product, just the policy. If you ask him, he'll give you complete instructions on how to DIY. How much more magnanimous can one get? In my case I just chose to have him do it for me. I guess that is just one of the drawbacks not having sufficient time.
  24. ---------------- On 5/7/2005 5:42:50 PM KathyMason wrote: I don't have DeanG crossovers and my RF-7's are very smooth on the top but my equipment makes it very smooth. ---------------- I have a very similar setup to yours (Rotel)and once thought I would not benefit from DeanG's upgrades. I installed his crossovers in my RF7s and RC7 today and the resulting liquidity of the highs is remarkable. Clarity has improved audibly. It sounds like the grilles are off while they are still on. The small amount of graininess that I always attributed to my Rotel amps is gone. Bells and chimes float like corks on a sea of sound, and have just the right decay without ringing. The bottom has spread a bit (good) requiring me to readjust my crossover to my sub. The soundstage is broader, but unfortunatly I think it may have less depth. The newfound quality of the RF7s in 2 channel has me looking at $2000 modified CD players trying to extract the last oz of goodness out of my system. This is something I would never have done yesterday. Jerry Rappaport
  25. I did the 3 series to 7 series upgrade several years ago and the differences are as large as Dean mentions. Just be prepared to feed the RF7s a healthy diet. I found that the 7s revealed every fault in my electronics chain. JR
