  1. I think they are surplus, since the SB's may no longer be in production.
  2. Yeah, I'll help you. Just give me your LS's, I'll take them off your hands, but just this once!
  3. We need to find a place to talk politix. Its ashamed we can't do it here, considering the year and relevance. But communist moderators aside, I liked the flic. I just watched it recently for the first time. There was a bunch of BS within F911, but there was some interesting info. I'm impartial, meaning I don't care for either B or K. But where does that leave us?
  4. I'm a bit curious, did you just get a new sub. Or have you had your sub for five years as is the case with your A/V/R, and just recently noticed a difference. You can find assistance here, but you have to be more specific. As to what gear your using, interconnects, settings, and such. I won't ask you "is it plugged in," but to get going in the right direction what movie were you watching?
  5. We are getting OT. Lets keep it simple. "If the refs sound as good as everyone says then what is gained by the crossover mod? Also, if the mod does provide a measurable improvement then why hasn't Klipsch implemented the design change?" The ref's do sound good, just as everyone says they do. Mind you, this is regarding price points and such. Consider the RB5's, which I own. They sound incredible. Especially on a students budget. But one thing I noticed about my RB5's are the lack of detail. In terms of construction and maybe outsourced components. One of which is the crossover, seemingly a hand-me-down from another line of the "ref" or the RB3's. Somehow that dangling extra set of woofer outputs from the crossover in my RB5's threw me off. Wait my RB5's don't have two woofers! On a side note these extra outputs were just sitting there. They were not fastened, zip-tied, or whatever. Just hanging out. The point is crossovers are looked over in many speaker manufacturers, Klipsch being one of them. Decent crossovers are expensive, luckily Klipsch gives you good drivers to work with.
  6. Which cd ripping software do you use. From CD to compressed formats and vice versa. For backup purposes of course.
  7. In terms of secure connections, I could care less. I'm not using my speaker wire as a bungee cord. As long as there is good contact, you should be fine. On a similar note, B-plugs that are non-screw types can be lifesavers if you've ever tripped or ran into one of you cables. Instead of pulling the attached gear, sometimes the wire will detach like a safety mechanism.
  8. I use them for convenience. They make connecting and disconnecting a breeze. Nothing I hate more than tightening and untightening those damn binding posts. In terms of sound quality, they are no better or worse than bare speaker wire. Some are worse since most speaker cable is non-coaxial and the outer conductor is not grounded. Thus banana plugs with fancy, bulky metal connectors could act as pick-ups. I use something similar to these. Notice the lack of exposed metal. These are great and cost pennies. http://www.amabilidade2002.com/banana.htm
  9. Two-way speakers don't necessarily have three-way crossovers. The only ones I can think of are smaller speakers like bookshelfs or satelites that can't reproduce low tones, so there filtered out.
  10. I checked the components on my RB5 crossover and it is the exact same crossover as the RF3. Of course this depends on whether or not the RF3 schematic does belong to the RF3 (the schematic recently posted) A few other things, the RB5 woofers nominal impedance is 6 ohms, the tweeters are 2.9 ohms. The impedance seen by the amplifier is 6.4 ohms. Which makes me wonder if I should change my output from 8 ohm to 4 ohm. That will have to wait. Getting back to the crossover biz, I could understand that Klipsch uses the same crossover on differenet products and that the impedances of the driver as well as the tweeter would alter the crossover point slightly. This could almost be the case with the RF3 with a difference of 25 Hz in the crossover. But wouldn't the impedance of the load change as the drivers impedances change throughout the audio range. It doesn't look as though there are any impedance corrections in the crossover. Has anyone else ever gone over this before and tried experimentally finding the speakers parameters as well as experimenting with Klipschs design.
  11. Space Cowboy, are you okay? Did you get shot in the head, did you get rear ended at high speeds, did you get rear ended at a fast pace with a shampoo bottle, or did your parents abuse you. If your ever in a dire situation and need someone to talk to, or someone to just listen, call the crisis line 1-800-554-7724.
  12. Mhurd, I was specifically writing about the RB5, not the RB3. "You noticed that your RB5's were way too bright? Hmm, the RB3 tested by andrew marshall..." In your reasoning would you also compare the SB3 to the RB5? If Andy had reviewed the SB3, would you bring that up! I've owned the RB5's for almost four years now, and they have always seemed forward. Not more so than in my current configuration. But regardless they are bright to me. Regarding tweeter mix/n/match, it was a suggestion. I was also refering to the compression driver not the horn assembly. You are right the RF7 tweeter is 1.75", but this is not the width of the the throat in the horn assembly. Both the RF7 and RB5 as well as the other R-line (previous R-line) have square horns, not 8 x 6. The tweeter may fit, meaning the four mounting screws of the RF7 tweeter match up with the horn assembly of the RB5 or RF3 in your case. (I bet they do) This is info for people that are able and willing to "DIY" With some modifications to just the crossover alone. Sell my RB5's, no, they just need some upgrading. By the way try bi-amping your RF3's with a secondary amp if you haven't already. I've decided to leave my RB5's bi-amped. Turn the secondary amp up 30-50% or so since the woofer has less sensitivity. Turn it up just until the sound become off-balance. You will find that the bass from the RF3's can be incredible.
  13. http://www.royaldevice.com/custom3.htm You don't want your speakers to put you to sleep, you want them to wake you up. Scaled down versions do exist, Bose audio products might interest you. But if your interest remains with life-size audio then learn about T-lines and enclosures and you will find that today's audio gear is already "scaled" Its a sound wave, you can manipulate it but you must sacrifice something else to acheive it.
  14. A few days ago I took my receiver in to get serviced. I didn't know that I had a service center so close by and that it even existed. The repair was minor and was finished in about 30-45 minutes. The service center was also a A/V store. I asked if I could bring my speakers in for some evaluation. I did an A/B with some other speakers, wires and amps. I learned a few things but what I noticed the most is that my RB5's were way to bright. The other bookshelfs had more balance then the RB5. When I mean balance, I'm not referring to the quality of the sound produced by the drivers, but the blend of the two. To get to the point, I came to the conclusion that the crossover must be replaced. So I went home and TORX'd it. I found something strange. I found a loose +/- woofer connector. I thought it was pulled off when I opened it up because I heard a snap (it was the rubber band holding the wire in place) But the wire turns out to be unused. It looks to be the same xover as the rf3 http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/files/Klipsch%20RF-3%20crossover%20schematics1.pdf I haven't checked the values, which I will do early this week. But still this seems pretty cheap to me. I'll find out the component values as well as the nominal and peak values of impedance for the K-1083(?) Somehow it should correlate to the RF3 woofer load. I'll try to find out the woofers parameters also, Q, Fs, Vas, etc.. Anyways, the highs are a 4th (Butterworth?) with a loss circuit (L-pad) The lows are a 2nd (Butterworth?) This circuit could use much improvement. Earlier today I switch-hit (bi-amp) my RB5's. The sound and bass was so much more better. Just don't give them too much juice or the vocals become off balance. When you do this use one channel for a control such as your left channel in my case, and bi-amp the right channel. Then you can "hear the difference" rather than thinking you do or using speaker switches. Heres some food for thought. Will the RF7 tweeter mount to my RFx, RBx, RXX Will the tweeter operate correctly without other alterations The R-series drivers are incredible, if you use them right, and/or with mods The RB35 and RB75 use the same woof, diff tweet, similar enclosures Rb vs RF (twin woofers) ..also crossover points RB5 - 1950 RF3 - 1975 RF5 - 2500 RF7 - 2200 RB35 - 2350 RB75 - 2000 Help me out if you can or tell me what you think.
  15. I'm not an advocate of any party. I'm pro-America. I believe in certain principles and also practice them. When I see or hear mature individuals or groups discuss topics, I hear them out. This is a forum so you don't have to listen. True this is an audio board, but someone has an itchy trigger finger (aka deleting a post). BTW, last time I checked Indiana was rumored to be strong Bush and favoring Bush in Arkansas. Incumbents generally have the egde, and in states where they have won in the past, "don't fix what ain't broken" meaning keep it the same. Since state residents are a vast majority of in-state employees as well, why would you want things to change if your doing "okay to good" This could mean that forum moderators are forcing their political views on us, somewhat indirectly, not allowing political discussion, albeit in an audio forum.
  16. You can get them new with warranty for $250 or so since they are NOS. If you sell them to a friend or fellow member, I'd sell for $200. This is more than $50 less than anywhere else when you include shipping and/or tax. Remember your gear is used, no matter how much you used it. If you ebay it then you can go for more.
  17. Tell her its a coffee table with a tail. When it rumbles tell her it was a small earthquake. This might work if she's blonde. If it comes down to it and you have to choose GF or the sub, I'd go with the sub. Cause the sub's never gonna nag you about that new GF.
  18. I feel violated in some way. This is so un-American. Were not debating who's gonna be the next mayor of BFE. It's the Presidency of the U.S. What better to discuss anywhere and at anytime. Even on an audio board. As long as the boys and girls can play without hurting each other, let them play.
  19. What if you had $1000 cables, would that be "much more." Personally I know there is a difference. But when it comes to 10-100k, we may not see the full advantages. It also depends on your rig. MIT's bi-wires connecting Rb-15's to a JVC, ahh no. Regarding Bi-wire, I don't think 99.999% of us know what it is about, or would hear any discernable difference. By the way Bi-wire posts are there so that you can Bi-amp also.
  20. I stopped by an A/V shop that sells Aragon. There is a current $1000 rebate towards the Aragon Pre. Bring in "any" receiver and get $1000 off. At least that is what I was told. I would do it, but I'm doing okay at the moment.
  21. I was thinking of buying the RF7's but held off knowing there would be new "7's" coming of the line. If these are indeed replacements for the RF7 then I might not. They might sound great, but they won't match my current R gear. I'm also dubious just from the look of them. They look a hell-o-lot smaller, but jpegs can be deceiving. If I read http://www.klipsch.com/newscenter/press.aspx?cid=624 correctly, the drivers on the floorstanders are 6.5's, whereas the RF7's are 10's. Another thing that I noticed is that it's a 5.1 rig. The last thing I wonder about are the rears. The LR and RR are identical. Same thing with the THX Ultra2's. The right woofer is on top, and the left woofer is on the bottom. In all it's about the sound. I'm sure they sound great and my current Reference line has become somewhat "heritage."
  22. Two arses is always better than one, that is if you can get away with it.
  23. I might be interested in getting that book from you. I haven't looked around for prices, but how much would you want for it.
