  1. That's a good one. "In the U.S.A." Actually, the last time I called Dell, the tech was in Edmonton, in Canada. Sounded like he was form Brooklyn, though. They are still pretty good for business, although the newer small units do have more proprietary parts in them, like CD drives that are made for laptops, etc. For the large number of Dell PCs that we have purchased, we really have a pretty low failure rate. Had good luck with IBMs, even thought they are now totally Chinese, since they sold everything to Lenovo. Their service is still great though.
  2. Couldn't agree more, OB. Went to the Easter Vigil at my church and got in at 4:00 am. Beautiful as always, and am reminded once again that I am only where I am because of His Grace. As Roy says, "Have a blessed day!." Bruce
  3. I, for one, am really interested to hear all the discussion on the Jubs. Not the sniping, but the good info that is being handed out. Love my La Scalas and Heresies, too, but realize there are better things out there, albeit more expensive A couple of comments: On the dog food issue, many, many pets are allergic to wheat gluten, yet it is in a lot of pet foods. Just getting rid of that can help a lot of pets. The organic foods may also be healthier too, in the long run. Maybe even in the short term. Back to the Jubs - Speakerfritz (I think) said he thought the Jubs looked more difficult to make than the Klipschorns. Perhaps in some ways, but the expansion of the horn is totally horizontal. This has made the construction easier, and in this design, keeps the builder from having to cut pieces of wood with compound angles. I also don't know how many pieces are in each cabinet, but have this bit of text form djk on the khorn: "I dearly love K-horns. And for most people they are too much work to build for a 50hz horn. 57 trapezoid shaped boards some with compound mitre angles.About two gross of screws and nails on edge sometimes at an angle into 1/2" plywood." He had posted this in regards to someone wanting to build the Khorn, compared to the La Scala, which in many respects is a piece of cake. In regards to those who complained about the favorable reviews being posted so quickly, it seems no one was upset when everyone immediately gushed about Craig's VRDs. Yet Craig was one being critical about the very positive posts on the Jubs. You would think it cuts both ways, but apparently not. They're just speakers for cryin' out loud. I would love a pair of Jubs in my house, especially if they looked as nice as Marion's, but that would make them cost even more, and I already can't afford them. There just isn't any reason to get your undies in a wad over all this. Roy, please carry on. I am loving all of your input. I am thinking that Marion could be put in charge of overseeing the fancy version of the Jubs. Bruce
  4. [] Wish I hadn't just looked at the price. I had forgotten what they run. Mark, considering how nice the Merlin is, I am sure these are worth every penny. Bruce
  5. I had never heard all of the problems with Ron and his deliveries. If I hadn't been blessed with the Merlin, I may very well have bought one of his preamps. I hope you can get this all resolved to your satisfaction (seems unlikely given how long it's been already). [8-)]
  6. I know Kevin, I didn't want to mention that. I love them, too.
  7. Makes me glad I bought mine already built. I sure would want my money back considering the time frame of this. Bruce
  8. You might try looking on the Kenwood site. Do a search on the model number and see what you come up with. Bruce
  9. I fertilized the yard and had leftovers for dinner. Doesn't get any better than that!!! Are you saying you had leftover fertilizer for dinner?
  10. That bike is nice, but I would rather have the mower, too. [*-)] Bruce
  11. Sheesh, our permits look like a bad photocopy, no photo, just a fingerprint. Wish ours were more substantial.
  12. It sounds like you ought to at least try some SET amps. If you listen at extremely low levels, you might seriously like some 2A3 or 300B amps. I'm not kidding. They really excel at that, and will still crank it up on occasion. I think 3.5 to 8 watts would be good for you. Bruce
  13. Carl, we aren't at odds here at all. I rarely push over 90 db. That's why the DHA2s sound fine to me, with my 2A3 amps. At the least, it was fun building them. If I had a monster amp and wanted to lose my hearing more quickly, I guess I might spend the money to have my speakers sound better while doing it. [] I was also thinking that the DHAs are constant impedance, but John would have to clarify that. Pus, I don't want to get into an argument over Al's designs. His crossovers are very good, and a little more complex. I am sure the 18db slope on the tweeter helps a lot at higher volumes. Bruce
  14. I have to agree with John A. on this. Al's crossovers are really nice, but I built a set of first order crossovers that John designed. They reside in my La Scalas. John had loaned me his ALKs while I got mine built (I promise I'll return them, John!). I swapped one out and powered the system back up. I really couldn't tell the difference between the two. Now, this is my system in my room, YMMV. Mine didn't cost near as much as Al's either. Bruce
  15. I heard he had some pretty Horus for sale and was all excited. I was ready to go - went to the website and realized I had grossly misunderstood the nature of the offer, so I had to put my Pantheon. That's just too damn funny.
  16. My son is on here (you know, Invidiosulus, the one who wrecked the Volvo), and is a bass player. I'll mention to him about this post. He has been working on his guitar playing lately, but has a Fender Jazz bass, which has great tone and playability, a Godin Fretless, which sounds so cool, and very acoustic since it has piezo pickups instead of magnetics. The amp will still make a huge difference though, and he uses a Gallien-Kruger that is a bi-amp setup. Huge sound. He's pretty darn good too. Bruce
  17. Absolutely gorgeous! The speakers look really good too. Fantastic work Marion. What part of Nashville are you in? I would love to see those cabinets up close some time, and get good look at your shop. It's all very impressive, what you have accomplished. With all the reinforcing you did on those cabs, they are really built better than the Klipsch cabinets. Bruce
  18. You can get archival inks for doing B/W prints, but only for certain models of printers. Mostly the Epson IIRC. The separate color cartridges get replaced with various shades of black (sounds like a contradiction doesn't it). The newer color lasers are amazingly cheap. I would look at the Brothers before the HP models. They are more color correct. Toner cartridges are easier to change. Costs more on the front end, but the total cost per page is cheaper with the laser. My favorite printer is Walgreens. I can take in a CD or just dump the photos from my pc. It's cheaper and they are real photos. Bruce Michael - don't you ever sleep? [^o)]
  19. Since this is pretty off topic, I just sent an email. [] Bruce
  20. Armando, Thanks, she is a really sweet person. I loved it there, and spending some time with family members was really special for me. The only reason she works in China is that her income is greater than what she could make at home, but you know that. She sends almost all of it back to family. I had the pleasure of standing in line with her at the NSO while she got official copies of her birth certificate and others. Then we stood in line a long time while she got her passport renewed. Bruce
  21. And since you asked, this is who I went to spend time with. I will say, it was very hard to head home, but she is now back at her job, teaching at a university in China. Bruce
  22. I ended up staying in Manila, or more precisely, Makati City. Air quality sucks, but my gf had a lot of business to take care of, and it was reasonably close to every place we had to go. I mostly wanted to spend time with her, so all was cool. She has family on Palawan, but normally stays with an older sister way up on the north side in Caloocan City (next one north of Quezon City). I had a blast, and given the time and finances, I would return again very soon. The pic is out of my hotel window, 18 floors up, more or less facing north. We had a lot of places on our agenda, but would have required some overnight travels and we just decided not to spend the money. Bruce
  23. I found an immediate improvement to my LS when I removed the ALs from my LaScalas, and put in some first order xovers designed by John Albright. He had loaned me his ALK Universals while I built mine (I still have them, btw, and have to return them). I couldn't tell any difference between the his ALKs and the ones I built. I am usually never hitting about 90db, so these work great for me. The plus was that building John's was far cheaper than either building or buying Al's. Al's are meticulously built, the quality is high. I just didn't have the money for them. Dean actually sent me the parts for what I made, since at the time he was building a lot and buying parts in larger quantities. I couldn't stand the ALs, they sounded pretty bad. Bruce
