  1. I would really think the Summits are far more than L100s on steroids. The Summits should walk all over them with finesse. I would buy the Summits from you, but I need more speakers like I need a hole in the head. Bruce
  2. Now your using that pic out of context. I always thought it meant that guys are easier to turn on, while the gals require more 'fine tuning' and more adjustments. Or makes them far harder to maintain. I love those anyway. Craig, It sounds like another winner. You still haven't said how much it weighs, though. Would I need to get my floors braced underneath?
  3. You sure did say it earlier. I don't know why they missed it. DIY, Sorry I can't help on the 125Hz problem. And I only have a two channel setup. Sounds like you have a wiring nightmare. Bruce
  4. Isn't Maron suggesting two Audax drivers, the same way John used two of the JBL ten inchers on his? Sounds like a plan to me.
  5. That's what I was wondering too. How much does it weigh? That thing is a tank. I can't believe how much my Moondogs weigh, so this must come in very heavy. Bruce
  6. Be good to her. Many marriages don't make it much past the five year mark. The farther behind it gets the better it gets. I mean, it really just gets better and better. I'm sure Eldon and Christy can attest to that. Bruce
  7. O'Connell is great. She performed a couple of times in Chattanooga for the free summer concerts here. This spring will see a concert with Tony Rice, Alison Krause and Union Station with Jerry Douglas. That ought to be a hot show and I hope to get to see it. If only it were free, but it is a paid concert. Bruce
  8. Jim, Actually, my friend is from the Philippines. She is presently working in China and will meet me back in Manila. She said she would stick like glue to me. [] She's a tiny thing too. 4' 11" and 90 pounds. If we hadn't had 911, I could almost sneak her back in in my carry on bag.
  9. Thanks to Erik and Mark both - I had tried the original Merlin with my Alesis SS amp, but it has about a 7k input impedance. The bass was rolled off tremendously with that setup. I am thinking the MErlin II would do nicely for me in that regard. Then I could retire the Sony SS receiver I use on my Heresies. All I need now is the money. Since I'm taking a trip to the Philippines next month, I'll just have to wait a while I guess. Bruce
  10. Is the noise a hiss or other electrical noise? Is it there with the volume turned all the way down? If so, is it probably something in the input stage, and may just be a noisy tube. Tubes - you love 'em or you hate 'em. Sometimes both at the same time. Bruce
  11. fini, I was thnking of eggplant when you posted that, but on re-reading CHrity's post, I fully understand... [8-)]
  12. That's for the burn-in. Is this perhaps the first humorous post by fini for the new year?[] Looking forward to this amplifier being completed...think it's already on my wish list (along with extra cash to buy the darn thing)! I think that is for the smoke test.
  13. I think Leo, Paul, and Dean have all given great advice. The caps have certainly drifted out of spec, so even in a larger room you would want to get them 'freshened' or brought back into spec or replaced. Paul and Leo might sound a bit at odds, but I think they may be more in agreement than first appears. While you may not want a low power amp, much of the time you may not be using much power. If the amp isn't clean at low power, you will really notice it. Having never heard any of the digital amps, I wouldn't be able to comment on them. A smaller room may be bringing all of the high end to the fore, making them seem a bit harsh. All of the electronics things mentioned by Leo will help, no matter what speakers you end up with. The Crown D45 Leo mentions, is rated 25 wpc into 8 ohms. That is about the bottom for many here (even though I use very low power amps and am satisfied), and many would still go quite a bit higher in power amps. Obviously, you have used higher power. I have a feeling that the new room is only pointing out the defects that existed before the move. New caps for the crossovers would be a cheap fix/correction, and may be all you need to do. Speaker placement is going to be a bear. Neither the long or short wall will work quite right. Bruce
  14. What? Me offended. No, not me. I know the topology is different. Having two of the rectifiers would mean a different tranny all by itself. It was just the LOOK of the tranny that reminded me of Ned's. I have his extra large replacement model on my ST70. It is substantially taller than the stock Dynaco replacement. It weighs over ten pounds. Yours must weigh quite a bit more than that. I wonder if I could even lift that new amp of yours. It looks cool Craig. I like the turret boards as well. Very neat. Hope you have a great year, and I really mean that. Bruce
  15. Can I assume the buffer would also address the problem of loading properly when you want to use a SS amp? I think I will have to get in line for one of these too. Bruce
  16. How insensitive and uneducated of me to even think they are even close to the same. Of course they are different. They would have to be for this setup. I think I'll just go listen to some music and enjoy the day.
  17. That PS tranny looks like the one Ned sells as a replacement for the Dynaco (please note that I am not saying you are making a Dynaco clone of any kind). I put one of those things in my ST 70 when I rebuilt it. Almost doubled the weight of the amp. [] Bruce
  18. Two comments: First, with the addition of the service manual, we can build a list pretty easily. Second, Dennis can never die. He is too valuable a resource to lose. Thanks Dennis, this will help out tremendously. Bruce
  19. The PS section on an HK 430 has, as I already mentioned, very few caps, and they are pretty obvious which ones. The larger electrolytics, are there in standard values. It wouldn't cost much to replace them, and then decide if you need to do others.
  20. I have certainly had better cars, but my first car, and probably the most fun was a '56 English Ford Prefect. It had four tiny cylinders, and a three speed tranny. It would do 55mph going downhill. Man, was that a fun car.
  21. Bass on a Cornwall would be better than on LS, but the LS still sound great with the right gear. DMAN has a design that is sort of a ported LS. It is shallower than the LS, so it would fit in easier, but better bass. I have the plans, but someone on the forums is actually building a pair now. Bruce
  22. A fairly inexpensive piece of software is Goldwave. You can open a file and then save it with a different sample rate/bit rate. Nice editor too. You can try it before you buy it as well. http://www.goldwave.com Bruce
  23. Michael, I have contemplated replacing the PS caps in my 430, and I think there are only about six in there that would need to be replaced. It wouldn't hurt, and these things ARE getting up in years. Bruce
