  1. If I had the money, I would fly out, rent a truck and bring these guys home with me. That would raise the total price, but those are beautiful and woudl stay in the family once purchased. Bruce
  2. Jack, The stands for the Heresys do two things. It tilts them back so that the mid horn and tweeter point toward your ears or at the least a bit closer. Plus it makes it impossible to put plants or drinks on the cabinets, thereby avoiding potential damage from water/alcohol spots. Mine are just raised straight up on some Rubbermaid step stools (approx. 9") and while not super attractive, the tweeters are up around 28" off the floor. It makes a difference. Most would like them a bit higher I think. Bruce
  3. Michael, The iMac line out may not load correctly into those receivers. Does it sound okay with a certain receiver but not on the others? Bruce
  4. The Heresys aren't quite as efficient as the LaScalas. "Blown" means different things to different people. If you remove the grill, and push gently in on the woofer, does it make a rubbing sound? If so, the voic coil has overheated and warped. They don't have a foam surround, but a treated paper/accordian style, which usually lasts a very, very long time.
  5. I also use nearfields in my home office (Alesis Monitor Ones), with sik dome tweeters. Plenty of high end, but then I am only three feet from them. Six feet away, around the corner in the bedroom are the Heresys. I usually listen at such ridiculously low volumes, I can imagine that most of you would be saying "Turn it UP!!!" But most things are rather quiet at our house right now. We are trying to have a good Christmas, and have some fun, but we aren't too rowdy. Nothing wrong with domes at all. Bruce
  6. How do you mean the LS doesn't have a flare? It certainly does. 1. Looking at the cabinet from the front, the horn has a flare left and right. 39 sq. inches to 66 3/4 sq. inches on each side. 2. The 7 1/2" is a straight column after that. 3. Expanding to the front of the cabinet. 66 3/4 sq. inches to 247 sq. inches on each side (approx) Bruce
  7. Gil, I have an early '50s Hallicrafters receiver. I almost can't pick it up (Okay, so I don't work out much). The thing is heavy. I am also just using it for parts as it was free (doesn't work now), and there are some things in it that I can use (like the power tranny). It has a 6V6 audio amp in it. Pretty cool I think. Bruce
  8. They are easier to build and they do go higher than the Khorn. It uses the horizontal expansion all the way instead of the vertical to horizontal that the Khorn uses. Make it easier to build and doesn't mess up the waveform as much.
  9. If you 'round' the corners you will lose more high end. If you are going to do it, it would be better to make a hard reflection as D-MAN shows in the drawing.
  10. They changed to the vertical version so the access panel wouldn't have to be on the side of the cabinet.
  11. Oh, I mostly agree with you there. I have quite enjoyed the fact that my wife is different than me. [] I don't totally agree about the hi-fi stuff. A lot has to do with how we are raised. Maybe we can turn that all around with our own kids. You know, teach the girls that science and math are fun. The working on engines is fun, etc.
  12. If you build a new box to hold the two 12 inchers, you will probably want them a little closer together. You won't get the same amount of bass out of them, but that won't necessarily hurt for the center channel. Nice!
  13. I'm not pretending to be anything. Life is better that way, but perhaps you haven't caught on yet.
  14. The Khorn has approximately 57 boards in each cabinet. Some are compound mitered. You can build one, but it certainly requires more care to get all the joints correct. The Cornwall is pretty much a box. The La Scala is in between.
  15. An internet connection through Comcast or other cable subscription service works the same as old ethernet. The more people who are on it, the slower it gets. It is initially faster than DSL, but depending on wehre you live and the number of internet users, the speed can drop substantially with cable. Our DSL throuh Alltel has gotten faster over the past couple of years as they have upgraded their service (with no increase in cost to me). We are close enough that our speed is not bad, and I haven't tested it for a while. We don't have cable, don't really want it. You can get an approximate idea of how fast your connection is by running one of the tests at: www.dslreports.com Go to the tools page (off left hand menus) and then down to Speed Tests. They have some reviews and compare different services. And yes, in some cities, you can get 6 Mbits with DSL. Bruce
  16. Nice looking cabinets. Gotta love the Altec stuff. Are those new 909 drivers (from Great Plains) or older ones? Bruce
  17. One of my PCs has an old crapblaster card in it. When playing back a CD, I can here noise while doing HD reads. But it is an awful card. The one I usually use for more serious audio work has an M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 card. It has been slammed over and over, but has worked quite reliably and is always quiet. Plus, it sounds great. Recordings made with it are excellent. I just wish they weren't owned by Digidesign now. There are cheaper alternatives than Profools. Even with a toslink connection, you could have all kinds of noise in your signal before it goes out ove the cable. But Dave is right. You can fix those problems. Bruce
  18. Gil, It is my turn to return the compliment. You are correct (once again) that they aren't exactly the same, but they are used interchangeably. Bruce
  19. Most of you young guys are SICK!. Even though my wife and I might go out for a nice dinner some time, or go some place fancy, what my wife likes best is that I love her and respect what she thinks. I trust her explicitly (there is a long story why, but not for this board). I enjoy her intellect and great sense of humor. Thirty some plus years and it has gotten better all the time. "Can't buy me love!" Yeah, Michael has a chance.
  20. Who you calling a kid? [] No, they should be the same but you won't hear a difference.
  21. 3.5mm is the same as 1/8". They come in mono, stereo (ring, tip, sleeve) and three conductor (ring, ring, tip, sleeve) configurations. The latter is mostly used as the analog outputs of video cameras, so it would terminate as three RCAs on the other end instead of two (left, right audio and one video). The pic shows the three from left to right. Obviously, the jacks are what these would plug into. Bruce
  22. This is where the channels are the same width:
  23. The drawing would be wrong. The first flare would go out, but the second part has no flare at all. The top and bottom of the cabinets are parallel and the two sides are parallel. This will also work in HF horns as well. But, the area at the end of the first flare is slightly larger that the area of the second part. Some models had them the same size, as in my next post, which in English measurements would be the 3 inches.
  24. We have had more than one Apple come in DOA. I guess when it reigns in pours. [] They are no more reliable than any other machine. The OS is not any faster or better at helping you get tasks done. Mind you, I don't consider MS to be my friend, but they both have their quirks. Max, Make sure you aren't blocking the air intake for the fan on the laptop, or that it hasn't sucked in a bunch of dust and lint. Bruce
