  1. Al, Does the horn flare back out just a tiny bit on the back end (throat)? Some of the tractrix horns do that. That would present a couple of problems with the plug. You would need two pieces to work that. Marvel Can you post the speaker builder article, or email it to me? I have a bunch of 5" drivers I was considering using in a horn like that.
  2. As Tom says, the KRKs are great. My desk at home uses Alesis Monitor One models. 6.5 in woofer and silk dome tweeter. 100 watts per side. Hard to beat that at your desk. They would work well in a small room also. A lot of the newer nearfield monitors are very good. Are those KRKs self powered? Mine aren't, but they make some that are. Very hard to beat for the price. Marvel
  3. Maybe that's the problem with the JBLs -- they are very neutral. Since the L100 was the consumer ver. of the 4311, you are listening to something that should just reproduce what the rest of the system gives you. The 4311s are rated at 75watts continuous program. 81db @ 10 feet with 1 watt input. Their brochure indicates amps of 150 watts are okay. I assume the L100s are similar. Marvel Marvel
  4. Another preacher on the board. Not that it should make any difference, but we'll really have to be on our toes to be nice. Nice work on the cabinets and mix of parts. Marvel
  5. Jim, This is awesome! I have been trying out different cad programs this past week, when I had time (which wasn't much), trying to do what you just did. Glad I didn't get anywhere. Since I don't have a pair here, I can't check anything out, but I will look for anything obvious. With your permission, I will post this on my website with some of the 3D renders I've done of the LS (like the attached). Marvel
  6. Do you have the grills already done where you can try them to see? Maybe with the horn it spreads out enough that it works okay but won't with the dome tweeter.. I was on a luthier site where they talked about the smell, and it can't be the adhesives as I've never noticed it with any of the other woods they use. Beautiful work again. I'm still thinking that some day I'll do my black Heresys, but they look fine the way they are (the wife does like the walnut JBLs finish more). Marvel
  7. I can certainly agree with Dean, but D-man makes a different point. The bass isn't as directional, so the bottoms fitting in at the 45 degree point looks good and will sound great. If the top was made where the horns could be pivoted a small amount it could do wonders for the sweet spot. Perhaps it could all stay behing a grill and you wouldn't be able to "see" it swung wider or narrower. I can't believe you are worried about looks Dean, after building those false corners of yours. Marvel
  8. Greg, I think it's going to hurt the dispersion a lot. The afbric on my 4311s is pretty transparent. Is that the paper cane (Nukane) you have? What number is it? Nice Sapele too. One of the Taylor guitars we have here is Sapele. Does it have a sweet smell to it as well? Marvel
  9. If the prep work is done right, the newer lettering/silkscreening will be more durable than the old. The best is to have the faceplate etched and then overprinted. Dylan, I used to work for a printer, and had to fix art for folks all the time. It can be rewarding work. I am amazed at how many people use their original artwork and then never have it to go back to to work from. Marvel
  10. My JBL 4311s (pro brother of the L100) are still amazingly good, even though I bought them in the early '70s. I haven't heard any of hteir newer stuff. As Griffinator mentioned, the Heresys pretty much only beat them in efficiency. The JBLs go lower as well, but that is a little different story. It's hard to hear any of these things in a BB and know what they sound like. I bought mine from a studio owner (new), and he borrowed them back once because a band was not familiar with the giant EV monitors he had. I don't even recall renting them, just loaning them to him. It was Styx. I don't even like Styx. I've made mixes on the JBLs that have sounded good on almost anything else I've played them back on. Marvel
  11. I've been to two free Bela Fleck shows. Absolutely rockin'! Tom, Whenever I hear Douglas play I want to use my Dobro for a barbeque grill. Listened to Krauss on NPR, live in the studio. So good, soooo tight. And she gets prettier all the time too. The lists could go on and on. And these shows won't blow your ears out (maybe Bela Fleck). His album Drive is very good and an early one. Marvel
  12. Mark, At the moment, I am feeding my ST-70 with my Alesis 16 channel mixer. It is what is available in the bedroom where I currently have the ST-70 and my Heresys. It is very quiet. I feed it with different gear (PC cheap CD, etc.) I'm looking for a tube pre. For a while you could get the new palte preamp from DECWare cheap, but their price has gone up a bit. It is a kit. What just floors me with the tube amp is how much more bass there is from the Heresys. Quite balanced too.
  13. Mark, My Dynaco was like your first upgrade. It was a later model with a fiberglas driver board. I replaced the same things you did. Curcio upgrade board (not premium), Curcio PS board, sockets and the heavey PS tranny from NEd. I was really only koking about whether or not it would still be a Dynaco. It sounds great for the money I have in it. I believe it is far better than the stock driver board. I'm using the 6922 tubes, but may find myself some 6CG7 as some say it is a better tube. Don't know that I really want to do any tube rolling yet. I'm on to speaker building for a while. Marvel
  14. They are nice pics. Wish I had that ply here as well. Think I'm going shopping this weekend.
  15. You start needing to take out loans when you get horns that will do that. I knew djk would post about the Community.
  16. If you insist on uploading 1600 x 1200 dpi pics you'll load up the server. If you reduce them to 800 x 600, they will be one quarter the size. (then I won't have to scle them to post them in line) Marvel
  17. There's a lot at "steak" here. Maybe we should just moo-ve on? I'll probably have to hide out after these. I always say I went to the State Agricultural Mechanical Normal College. Marvel ps Great Lakes NTC in Jan is just awful. I was there in '69.
  18. I haven't ever made it to one of my HS reunions. It just never worked out. My 40th will be it two more years, and I would like to go. Becaue of where my wife and I live, I have been to three of hers (in the last ten years). We have had a great time. Everyone is past the one upsmanship that goes on when you are younger. Well, most are past it. I hope I can make mine then. Marvel
  19. This will make it easier to look at:
  20. My digital audio recorder uses Quantegy tape. The recorder uses tape in VHS shells, although a higher quality than normal I should have sold it when I had the chance, eh? Marvel
  21. Rick, It could just be a part of the regular data stream, the same way other header info is prepended to a file. It isn't supersonic if it is still digital. I don't think there is enough space at the moment. It would have to be included in each block, so it would shorten the time on a CD. Although there would be room on a DVD. After all, the video stream moves a lot of data. I'm calling my attorney now! Marvel
  22. I only wish my 4311s were made as L/R models. Being early '70s, they are still quite articulate. Even if they are only 89db efficient. I still have great respect for the JBL Pro gear. Marvel
  23. I don't think there would be an issue either way. To the rear you might have noise if you placed it too close to the wall. Obviously, in the top part of the cabinet you would port to the rear. It might be more consistent if ported to the front. One of the posters here had built cabinets from scartch and had his point to the front. He had the bass bin separate from the mid horn cabinet, so he had to add on the space. Marvel
  24. If you make a 10" deep box, you will have 8 1/2" internal height. DJK said this would work fine. Marvel
  25. ---------------- On 2/1/2005 10:47:13 AM ooteedee wrote: Which leads me to Marvels question: the motorboards I made were too short. they were 10 3/4...or whatever the plans call for. Why? I haven't figured that out yet..exactly. Cut error? No. Did I make the sides too tall? Maybe. But I don't think so. In fact...No. I will say this: Someone on this forum said the bass bin top dimension was 3/4" too long. Which was true. I cut it to 23". Which allowed for the HF Motorboard to mount over the bass bin top edge. As OEM. BUT....With a 23" bass bin top you need a 11 1/2" motorboard. Not 10 3/4" So I think two dimensions are wrong on the drawings. UNLESS ...those drawings are for a commercial LaScala. Which are covered with felt. (Right?) So maybe they changed the dimensions a bit so they could be a bit less refined...because they were gonna cover it all up with felt or metal edging. ---------------- How tall are the sides? I added up all the pieces again (from the drawings), and it adds up correctly. I really want to know so that we can be sure of the dimensions. I'm trying to work up a cleaner set of drawings. Marvel
