  1. Back to the original question! FWIW my feeling is that given that the audio spectrum is so very limited and the current flow is so low even at insane volume levels ( especially so on the source to amp side ),one could make satisfactory cables from garden variety barbed wire.
  2. Generally speaking a single disc CDP will give far better performance for audio than a multi disc player
  3. I would pass on them. That finish is not particularly attractive and the cost of new woofers in Canada would make them a pair of ugly but good sounding C$1000.00 or more speakers ( assuming the mids and tweeters are good and if they have been overdriven enough to blow the woofers I wouldn't bet on it ). It takes patience but decent Lascalas can be had for C$1000.00 +/-. Check your local buy/sell sites/Bargain Finder/Penny Saver and you will eventually find them for a good price and not have the hassle of shipping etc. FWIW I sit here listening as I type to a pair of 1984 Khorns that I have a total of C$2500.00 invested in ( purchase price, vehicle rental, gas, refinishing etc. ) If you are looking at buying ugly, damaged and abused Lascalas don't pay more than C$400.00 because you can get decent examples for about the cost of ressurecting them and when all is said and done they will still be ugly looking unless you go to the expense of having them veneered in which case they will cost you more than reasonable looking and intact Khorns can be acquired for..........With Patience.
  4. Old rather racist joke. 100 Yen = 1 US Dollar. One American Yen = 100 US Dollars.

    PWK

You done good PWK. You remain in all our hearts!! PWK's genius enriched the lives of millions. I never met you but you have made my life better.
  6. Yes probably but you will spend 3 times as much effort and not do as good a job.
  7. What a beautiful piece of audio history! I'll bet it sounded beyond decent for its time.
  8. Welcome and good luck in your auction. Stick around you might find that Klipsch speakers are generally very good and that we are not all necessarily anal and touchy after all
  9. The static charge is not in your body or in the items you touch. The charge is on those items.I am not being a smartass by the way in saying this. The air in our environment and objects in our environment have a charge and what happens is that where the air etc. encounters an item or person etc. that has a lower charge electrons will transfer until there is no differential between the air or carpet etc. and that object will hold a static charge of X volts. If that object at X volts of potential is contacted by another of the same charge no current will flow but if touched by an object or person at a higher or lower potential then a current will flow until the potentials are equal. The potential differences can be substantial. It requires a static discharge of 2000 volts to produce a visible spark but the CPU in your computer can be destroyed by as little as a 200 volt discharge. To answer the question of how one can get a static shock from a doorknob in a wooden door simply remember that any conductive material can exchange electrons with any other conductive element ( including air ).
  10. I rarely crank my dear old horns enough to bother anybody but one night a couple of years ago the Mrs. and I got into the vino and were listening to some Leonard Cohen (Democracy) and sat out on the front verandah. As we sat there I heard some guitar lines that I didn't recognise ( good but unfamiliar ). A neighbour a block away was playing along with ol' Lenny!! Oops!! I went in and cranked it down considerably and went back to the porch.A moment later I heard a far-off voice yelling, "Turn it back up!I think I've almost got it!" On another occasion SWMBO was away and I decided to crank it up while getting ready for work (5:00 AM).It was mid-winter and all windows and doors were closed.Paulette Carlson was wailing through Loving on the Side when the phone rang.It was my next door neighbour ( our houses are rather close together ) asking that I turn down my stereo.I apologised profusely and put them and Paulette back to sleep immediately. A few days later I encountered them at the local liquor store and once again apologised for disturbing them.He laughed and said, "The music was fine!It was the racket from our window panes rattling in their frames that got on my nerves!"I laughed and promised no more early morning concerts and he said with a grin,"I'm serious! The windows in our bedroom were actually rattling!" Embarrasment aside,It is truly amasing to consider how loudly a pair of Klipsch speakers will play with a 30 watt/channel amplifier!
  11. An inexpensive alternative is available.Go to your local RV dealer and buy a couple of 25' rolls of butyl rubber caulking.I have caulked the midhorns in my Khorns and am very pleased with the result. The midrange is smoother and tighter and the upper bass has improved immensely. An inexpensive and very effective tweak.
  12. "Ground the chassis to real earth ground." That in the absense of other measures would aggravate the problem by increasing the difference in potential between the equipment and the user. To put it another way if the equipment ( ungrounded ) has a static charge of perhaps 500V+ and the user has a charge of 200v+ ( These are realistic values BTW ) then there exists a 300 volt differential. If the equipment is grounded to a real earth value (ie. 0 volts) then the differential becomes 500v+. The solution then requires some means of reducing that differential short of grounding both the user and the equipment. I at times work at an electronics plant as a computer technician and the problem of ESD is successfully handled there by environmental controls ( air filtration to reduce dust particles, extra ventilation, the use of conductive shoe straps and the wearing of antistatic smocks ). Obviously that level of ESD ( Electrostatic Discharge ) prevention is impractical for home use. The alternative is therefore to address the most easily addressed and MOST important factor which is is relative humidity. Slightly increasing the RH in your home will reduce the tendency of you and your equipment being at a huge differential in static charge and as a bonus you will find that you will feel more physically comfortable at slightly lower temperatures in your home.
  13. My advice is nonetheless sound. Others may chip in with ideas that are more to your liking but this is the last you will hear from me.
  14. The air in your house may be too dry. Have you tried a humidifier? In addition if you frequently wear polyester clothing or wool you will tend to build up a greater static charge than if you mainly wear cotton.
  15. If you have a turntable make sure its ground connection is solid.Check that the connections to the pickup cartridge are in good shape. Make sure that the interconnects between the preamp and power amp are solidly connected. Examine the connectors at each end to ensure that they are clean. If all of these check out you may have a problem in the preamp itself and it may need servicing.
  16. No such luck. The failed flash corrupted the BIOS which is hardwired to the system board. The laptop is out of warranty so I will likely have to buy a new system board. The only positives are that I have a desktop machine that I can use to pick fights with Kenratboy and I am the warranty tech at the company that does repairs for HP in this region. It is possible that HP might come to the party as a courtesy. If not I can get a new mainboard at a hefty discount.
  17. Damn!! I was flashing the BIOS on my laptop using a Winflash utility from HP (correct BIOS version ) and the screen suddenly went black. I am a computer tech and have flashed umpteen BIOS in the past few years. It figures that the only one I've ever had go sideways would be on my own laptop.
  18. Congratulations Gil ! Let me add my name to the list of folks here who are delighted with your good fortune. It is nice to see a good guy get a break. When are you going to post a review?
  19. I have a buddy who has almost zero space for a decent stereo. He called me the other day and asked if I would help him find a decent and inexpensive micro system for his apartment. He wound up buying the nice sounding little system in the title. I must say that for a micro this thing really is damned good! It images well and the overall sound is well balanced and uncoloured. The receiver features a sub out so he could add a subwoofer if he wishes. What did annoy me however is that virtually every store we visited had LOUD bumpythumping ?? music ?? blaring throughout the store. I guess it works overall from a sales perspective but in two instances we left without auditioning potential candidates simply because the noise levels were so high that we had to to get the hell outta Dodge. All of the above aside I have to admit that there is some suprisingly good inexpensive audio out there for who have not been afflicted with our disease but who wish something better than a boombox.
  20. I suspect that Klipsch is simply looking for good talent.I doubt that this signals a fundamental change of course.
  21. laurenc319 Could you supply a link to the modded ASL products?
