  1. those Moondogs only have a few hundreds volts in them no where near the 600V those caps are rated at. No reason those Solens should fail for 50 years or more... it looks to me like a mouse ate the damn thing.
  2. In my professional opinion "most likely" all that this gear will require..... 1) Test all tubes replace as needed 2) thorough electrical cleaning 10 years on storage creates lots of oxidization. 3) basic testing of any possible problems found during visual inspection. 4) slowly ramp gear up starting at 50 VAC with variac over several hours testing for problems like excessive current draw, heating up components, smoke or spark show) 5) Once at full 120 VAC test for proper operation. 6) play some music! With gear like this shipped in where I would have to unbox and re-box for return shipping I'd charge about $125 for each piece. If both pieces made it though the above process without needing repair I'd spend one bench day to complete 2 pieces of gear...
  3. You might want to move this thread to the Solid State or technical forum. Since they implemented all the various sub forums for SS and tubes the once mighty 2 channel area is a ghost town.... as DJK states a schematic is going to make it much easier for him help you.
  4. Not in all cases I would check the operating manual or contact Leben before making a purchase.
  5. It could easily be a cold solder joint any where in that channel.
  6. You got a matched quad for $75? Now that a super good deal.
  7. What is the rest of the history of this 222C?
  8. Not to inceuate your a bonehead but to be on the safe side I'll add don't think "well why not just remove the output tubes" removing those would cause extremely high voltage condition to the entire amplifier.
  9. Well if he did what I was thinking he did the balance control would still work. The volume control might have a very minor effect.
  10. In my opinion this was Mark Deneen's finest engineering work. These are very rare I believe I have refurbished 4 of them in the last 17 years. This solely designed by Mark and 100% point to point wired. Uses 3 12AX7 per channel. No tone controls 2 high level inputs, 1 phono input and tape loop.
  11. well I would not run it that way if it was mine... if the output section is not loaded and something goes wrong with it like an output tube failure one of the output transformer is surely going to get fried. In fact even with a loading resistor it could still lose a transformer since you would most likely have no clue it was happening without speakers attached. What you are describing done correctly can not be done in a few minutes. I have one more question...maybe ;). When running it as a power amplifier is the sound changed at all when you adjust the main volume control or balance control on the 222C?
  12. Two more questions... When using it as a normal 222C integrated do all front panel controls still function? When using it as a power amp or preamplifier don't you have to change tape monitor switch location? Just thought of one more. When using it as a preamplifier with the output tubes still in place will you have either speakers or some loading resistors in place?
  13. Well okay....not much of a modification then. The preamp section of the 222C will be very pesky about the input impedance of the amplifier you try to drive. It's really not a stand alone preamplifier. The amplifier section should work real well in some cases. Again it will be preamplifier finicky. The preamp should always be capacitor coupled or the amplifier section could easily go ballistic on you.
  14. Was a switch installed to toggle between power amp and integrated amp mode?
  15. $140 for any matched quad of KT88's is not a bad deal...hard to say how good they would be. They are basically the same as the current JJ's the glass might be thicker but the glass is not a working element in a tube. The innards look the same to me. I'm fairly sure the military specified thicker glass to allow the tube to survive in high shock and vibration environments like tanks, planes and nuclear blasts
  16. Look down into that loose socket and determine how the metal contacts inside grab the tube pins, tighten it up so it grabs the tube pins firmly. A dental pick type tool works best for this.
  17. . Class A has really nothing to do with an amps topology single ended or push pull other then that a single ended amplifier has to be Class A (single tube always conducting). Push Pull can be class A, Class A/B, Class B and so on. The push pull amp you are describing is Class A/B it operates in class A for some small percentage of its max power rating in both Triode or Pentode than switches in and out of class B as the situation demands more power. By the way I bet you a dime to a dollar your amp is not Triode/Pentode and is Triode/Ultra Linear. Recently I've seen many folks and even some manufacturers referring to amplifiers as Triode/Pentode. It would be seriously unusual and complicated to "properly" implement a Triode/Pentode combination because the required feedback tuning would be very different between two modes of operation. Triode and Ultra Linear operation is very similar. I know this stuff can be confusing. .

You mean beyond the extra cost http://magnequest.blogspot.com/2016/01/nos-valves-vrd-amplifier-with.html
  19. Nope I've never been a fan of single ended amplifiers...

Actually you have a few times long ago about buying new VRDs if my memory serves me...
  21. Schu not sure you realize it but those modern Dynakit Mark III are $675 each.
  22. I made one mistake in my post the plastic/vinyl lead transformers were made in Japan not China. But still are not as valuable as the good old USA wound transformers.
