  1. No. it's not a Marantz amp. Yesterday, I was going through one of the drawers on the 10" radial arm saw I inherited from my grandad last fall and in the drawer where he had kept his picture frame hammers, nails, etc. I found torn card w/ 3 small envelopes stapled to it that read: "Goldentone Sololist" and "Guardian of your records". I was trying to figure out what they where when it dawned on me that they were old phonograph needles.. on the back of the packages they read: "Plays 3 to 5 records with high fidelity" and "50 needles 10 cents" I know they are old, but was wondering if any RKIs here knew approximately how old and if they have any collectors value? I can imagine that all your fuses have either a penny behind them or tin-foil. Safety? Fusible links in the transformer primary are a one-shot on purpose, the insulation has been overheated. If concerned about safety, get a new transformer. The next time you have a party, rent an amp from a music store. The amp had a main fuse protection in it(AGC type). That is why I did not replace the link fuse w/ a inline. the link fuse was "hidden" inside the transformer and of a lesser value than the main, since it blew and the main did not. The tranformer showed no signs of overheating i.e. discolored windings and/or burnt odor. ------------------ Denon AVR-3802 Denon DCD-1520 Sanyo DS31590 31" TV Panasonic A120U DVD Sony SLV-N71 Hi-Fi VCR RCA Satellite System Klipsch Tangent 5000 mains Klipsch Tangent 1000 rears Klipsch Tangent Center Theater
  3. Several years ago my brother-in-laws Pioneer integrated amp did the same thing. He had it cranked up really loud and it just quit. I checked it out for him and what I found was Pioneer had a fuse link hidden in the transformer on the input (120 vac) side. If I remember correctly it also had a AGC type fuse. I bypassed the burned out link fuse and it worked fine for several years after. P.S.The link fuse was stuffed down in the windings. use a multimeter to find it or take it to a repair shop and tell them what to look for. ------------------ Denon AVR-3802 Denon DCD-1520 Sanyo DS31590 31" TV Panasonic A120U DVD Sony SLV-N71 Hi-Fi VCR RCA Satellite System Klipsch Tangent 5000 mains Klipsch Tangent 1000 rears Klipsch Tangent Center Theater
  4. I Received a email from Grizzly Industrial the other day on their closeout items and while checking it out I came across 4' x 8' sheets of wrap-around veneer in Red Oak, Cherry, Pine, and Walnut. I don't know if the prices are a deal or not, but i thought I would pass it along. http://www.grizzlyoutlet.com/items- list.cfm?ObjectGroup_ID=360080&listtype=group&?&User_ID=59573&St=7894&St2=-49555125&St3=45022863&DS_ID=1 ------------------ Denon AVR-3802 Denon DCD-1520 Sanyo DS31590 31" TV Panasonic A120U DVD Sony SLV-N71 Hi-Fi VCR RCA Satellite System Klipsch Tangent 5000 mains Klipsch Tangent 1000 rears Klipsch Tangent Center Theater This message has been edited by Kilowatter on 01-26-2002 at 06:23 AM

  6. It doesn't hurt to keep the cables as neat as possible, if just from a trouble shooting standpoint. On my system, I mainly concerned myself with trying to keep the AC power cords to the equipment away from the speaker and interconnect cables to avoid any induced noise from the AC. ------------------ Denon AVR-3802 Denon DCD-1520 Sanyo DS31590 31" TV Panasonic A120U DVD Sony SLV-N71 Hi-Fi VCR RCA Satellite System Klipsch Tangent 5000 mains Klipsch Tangent 1000 rears Klipsch Tangent Center Theater
  7. The purpose of the spikes isn't to elevate the speakers. Their purpose is to "anchor" the cabinets to the floor. When I bought my T-5000s from a co-worker, he said he had some spiked "feet" for them that he had never used and when he located them, he would give them to me. I had had the speakers for about a month when he brought them in to work. I put them on the next day and noticed a immediate improvement in the bass response. It was definately tighter and more defined. My living room floor is carpet over cement slab and the spikes penetrated the carpet, anchoring the speakers to the cement thus eliminating the speakers "floating" on the carpet. If you have a carpeted floor, then the spikes are a improvement in my opinion. ------------------ Denon AVR-3802 Denon DCD-1520 Sanyo DS31590 31" TV Panasonic A120U DVD Sony SLV-N71 Hi-Fi VCR RCA Satellite System Klipsch Tangent 5000 mains Klipsch Tangent 1000 rears Klipsch Tangent Center Theater

The exception is a copy of "True Lies" that I have in which the letterbox is so extreme that the black "bars" take up approximately 1/2 of the screen. On my other widescreen movies I was able to eliminate most of the black bars by "lying" to my DVD player and telling it I have a widescreen TV. This narrows the bars down to about 2" top and bottom which is barely noticable. As far as the pill box goes, I suspect that from inside one of those, the whole world is "letterboxed"! pill box= slang for a reinforced concrete bunker with narrow, horizontal, viewing/firing ports. ------------------ Denon AVR-3802 Tangent 5000 mains Tangent 1000 rears Tangent Center Theater Sanyo DS31590 31" TV Panasonic A120U DVD Sony SLV-N71 Hi-Fi VCR RCA Satellite System This message has been edited by Kilowatter on 12-28-2001 at 11:41 AM

  12. No, not really "new" to DVD. I've had the player for over a year and we have about 90 DVDs in our collection so far. (fiance loves her Ebay ) I just personally don't like that format. It feels like I'm watching TV from a pill box. I suspect that 90% of the households have 4:3 aspect TVs, yet hollyweird insists on releasing new movies in letterbox format only. Why? Some of the DVDs I have are dual sided w/ both formats. Whay not make them all that way so we have a choice. The dual sided DVDs are the same price, so that isn't a issue. I guess I just don't like the idea that if I want the high quality audio and video of DVD, I have to put up with the wide screen format when it isn't neccessary. ------------------ Denon AVR-3802 Tangent 5000 mains Tangent 1000 rears Tangent Center Theater Sanyo DS31590 31" TV Panasonic A120U DVD Sony SLV-N71 Hi-Fi VCR RCA Satellite System

  16. This movie is pretty much J.P. standard fare; people running and dinosaurs eating them. The DTS sound track is very good with lots of bass and wide dynamics. The best part for me personally is the format is full screen. On a scale of 1 to 10 I'd give it a 7. A good movie to add to your collection. ------------------ Denon AVR-3802 Tangent 5000 mains Tangent 1000 rears Tangent Center Theater Sanyo DS31590 31" TV Panasonic A120U DVD Sony SLV-N71 Hi-Fi VCR RCA Satellite System
  17. I plan to attempt building LaScala replica speakers in the near future. My question is, since the origional horn lenses are near impossible to find, will the JBL 2370A lense make a suitable sustitute for the mid-horn? 19. I found this site while searching for speaker parts. They have plans for sale to build a audiophile quality folded horn powered subwoofer that looks real interesting. http://www.decware.com/wicked1.htm you might want to check out their support forum on the WO32 for people who are building them. http://www.decware.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi They also have plans for a subwoofer called the House Wrecker that they claim will provide serious bass (enough to cause minor damage) in rooms fromm 144 square feet to 32,000 square feet! http://www.decware.com/hwk15.htm I've been kicking around the idea of building my own subwoofer and thought I'd pass this along to those of you with the same idea. 23. Excellent movie!!! I just purchased the Superbit DVD version at the local Walmart and all I can say is...WOW!!! Superb audio and visual!!! In my opinion it is a noticable improvement over standard DVDs. This movie really put my home theater system to work. It has well balanced 5.1 audio with a wide dynamic range that isn't overpowering. 24. I have mine hooked up to the system and it wasn't what I'd call a "hassle". Hooked it up like I normally would through the VCR to the TV, then added patch cords for the audio and S-video "out" to the tv/dbs "in" on my receiver. ( "monitor out" S-video on receiver is hooked to S-video "in' on TV. A much better picture than the co-ax can provide) Having the co-ax hooked up through VCR gives me the option of watching the tube without haveng the H/T on. 25. I'm working on setting up a surround system. My main speakers are Tangent 5000s. I found a pair of Tangent 1000 bookshelfs for sale that I'm considering for the rears. My question is: The SPL for the 5000s is rated at 99dB while the 1000s are rated at 91dB. What effect will this have on setup? Will the mains overwelm the rears? Thanks John
