  1. We at least started cutting the Plywood yesterday. Of course, like everything else you plan, things change. Started cutting got three sheets cut and then company showed up unexpected.[N] I will update further this week as I should get the rest cut. Then I have to clean out a hole in the shop to start the assembly. Reason for the new building, I have completely run out of room.....! More to come, W. C.
  2. Pete, Well let me tell you about that SHOP of Tools....! The Powermatic saw was purchased with the specific intent to be able to handle full sheets of plywood easily by ONE person. I sold my Delta Unisaw last year to purchase this one and am having second thoughts...........[:@] Not really....! I have never actually 'Set Up" the new saw, so guess what I have been spending most of the day on...? Silly me thought it would take thirty minutes or so....WRONG......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One thing about a sliding/horizontal panel saw is it has LOTS of adjustments, and I mean a LOT.....! Anywazzzzzz, after several hours, MANY Budweisers and beating the shit out of several squares, I can now make five cuts in either direction, either rip or cross cut and can come away with something accurate. In the past, I have never needed this type of accuracy before but I am now comfortable that the cuts will be as true as they can be. The saw has proven to be a challenge but I am confident that it is RIGHT....! Remember, with the slider it has to be accurate on either side of the blade, slider table to the left, rip fence to the right. In doing the many cuts for the cabinets, "Close Enough" will not Cut It.....No Pun intended...~! Tomorrow should be the wood butchering day and now that it is set up I feel that I can get everything cut in a couple of hours. Something tells me that this build is going to take longer than anticipated, but that is perfectly OK. I am pretty sure that the Drone idea is not quite fifty years old, as Roy may have some objections to aging him THAT much.....[H]
  3. Tom and Everyone, I must say that you guys are "ALL OVER IT".....! [8-|] We have plans for mass loading the PR and also variable slots for the motorboard. It is truly going to be a huge tuning project and hopefully everything is covered in the present design. I really don't want to put the cart before the horse as much more detail will be covered during the assembly phase. I can see from the start that there will be many varied opinions, so we will see how it turns out. Like any other experiment, you have to allow for adjustment and I am totally sure that some aspects of the design will be changed during the construction of the cabinets. I feel that the design is solid so far and only time will tell as to how they will turn out. I appreciate everyone's input so far so pleasse keep it coming. I have to go and sign some change orders for the new building.......since I am the Contractor/Owner, I guess I will have to approve them since I was the one that caused them....[] W. C.
  4. Tom took the words right out of my mouth so I will not belabor the point of "GUTTING" them. My question is; Where are you in Charlotte? I am in South Charlotte off of Old Pineville Road and would be happy to help you with you project. I have a few sets of k Horns sitting around plus a few other heritage products. W. C.
  5. Thanks for everyone's replys so far as I was beginning to wonder if there was going to be any interest. The passive version of this speaker has interested me for sometime and I am looking forward to building them. I want to start off slow as I am also working on building a 300B PP amp, which is taking much longer and costing more than I had imagined/figured...! Trying to split time between the two projects is going to be a challenge as I have a building under construction also..... Getting all of the panels cut will probably take me through this weekend and I also want to include a lot of pictures, which you all know is very time consuming in trying to document a build. Please be patient and they will come. We will be gluing and screwing using pocket screws (Kreg) and fiberglass/epoxy on joints that can not be screwed. I only hope that these can look half as good as some of the other builds I have seen on these forums as some of you missed your calling in woodworking. Rigma's photo build has been an inspiration and he really has done an excellent job on his clones. To all that have built these before me and posted about it, I say THANK YOU...! I can tell you that this is definately a design that incorporates the Drone/Passive in the middle position on the motor board. Using three 12" frames does cause the standard dimensions to be changed somewhat, one being an increase in the height of the cabinet. The baffels have been changed to accomodate the third opening which will make for some interesting cuts. As to a 3-D model, yes I have done that in 3D Studio but the looks will be virtually identicle to the original cabinet. I use the 3-D for concepts and also rendering different looks on the face plate. Again, I would like anyone that has input and espicially if anyone can offer any information or their thought on the passive part it will be most welcome. Getting them built is the main priority now and "ringing" them out afterwards will be the challenge for all of us. I am sure that some of you will want detailed testing and i will do my best to accomodate your desires. I must qualify that I am certainly NOT an audio expert and test scores for speakers is secondary to the sound that they produce, for me. Let the FUN begin.....!!! W. C.
  6. Slight correction; They would be 3,094 and 95 of that particular year. Just a thousand off...no biggy...........[]
  7. We will be cutting the Baltic Birch this comming week, to start a Jub-Like Drone build. I use the Jub-Like terminology to be sure that everyone understands that this is a CLONE of the Klipsch Jubilees snd are in NO way affiliated with the Klipsch Factory Theatre speakers or sets that have been ordered by various Forum members. Those that have the Factory built Jubilees have a true work of art and a mechanism that reproduces sound faithfully to its intent. They will always be referred to as Jub-Like and will never be called Jubilees. They will incorporate the 12" inch K-12 passives and the drivers will be KappaLite 3012 LF. I am including the term Jubilee in the subject line so that anyone searching will have a chance to view this thread. I will make the AutoCad drawings available to anyone that wishes a copy AFTER the build is complete and all changes have been incorporated into the drawings. Please do not ask me to send you a set beforehand. There will be changes during the construction and the only way that I can end up with an accurate set is to complete the build first. I view this as a community build and welcome ALL comments, Pro or Con. The plans were designed from all of the latest information available and should be accurate to within 1/16 orf an inch. Disclaimer: If anyone has the urge to try and trash this build for copying a Klipsh Factory build, please keep your comments to yourself, as there is NO intention of producing this or any variation of it as something that Klipsch condones. This is a pure experiment and should be dealth with as such. There is NO attempt for any type of personal gain or to produce these in any type of quantity For Sale. This is and will be a one of a kind build. I am sorry for the disclaimer but I have sen so many negative comments on prievious Jubilee like builds, that I want everyone to understand from the start. We have completed a set of AutoCad drawings with the revised motorboard for the passives. I am looking for any and all input that anyone feels like sharing and hopefully in a few months we will have a set of speakers that we ALL can be proud of. We know that Roy had a special interest in the use of passives in the design and I hope to stay true to that goal. I want to thank everyone that has had input to this design so far and it appears that what we have developed is true to the original ideas of this design. The shop consist of a 1500 sq/ft (30' x 50') work area with a Powermatic HPS-67 Horizontal Panel Saw (Three Phase), Dewalt 14 inch Compound Mitre Saw, Powermatic Shaper 3/4" (Three Phase), , Powermatic 14" Band Saw, Large Horizontal Belt/Disc Sander (Three Phase), and a Dewalt (Three Phase) 18" Radial Arm Saw. We are fortunate to be able to purchase Baltic Birch, 5' x 5', void free, 3/4" (19mm) at just under 30.00 per sheet (wholesale). A commercial neighbor goes through about a thousand sheets of plywood a month, building concrete molds and I am fortunate to be able to purchase through them....! It has taken several years to accumulate this equipment, thanks to the economy and eBay....! It takes seven 5' x 5' sheets for a set of speakers. We have been refurbishing/reveneering Klipsch speakers for a few years now and really enjoy the work....! There will be a complete photo build of these speakers, going step by step and I only hope that I can do the build justice......[] This will not be a "Quick Build" as I want to be as accurate as I can and I have two other projects that I am working on. My time is limited as I had planned on retiring the first of October, but it looks like it will be the first of November before it happens. My full time job eats a lot of time and I had hoped to get out by the first of this month, but the logistics of me leaving have become a bit complicated. Guess it is NICE to be in demand.......[]
  8. All of my K-43's measure between 3.9 and 4.2, this is across six new ones and a bunch of older ones in MWM bins. Something is strange with the 5.1 reading, possibly you were not making a good connection with the probe or as Fritz says, a cold solder joint.
  9. Looks like a pair of candidates for Watco Natural............... When applied right it provides the perfect finish, IMO.....[]
  10. This guy Erik, has probably got the best CD player on the planet. It is obvious that he has doen his homework and he uses a transport out of a $50.00 dollar BoomBox. He spent his money on the DAC. If nothing else, it makes for an informative read and his craftsmanship is second to none. Just something to toss into the mix. http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11349
  11. You may want to visit these two threads: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/153084.aspx http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/p/153599/1611208.aspx#1611208 Lots of good information .....!
  12. Another pic Pretty heavy in the Iron department seven transformers and the Mains is 35 pounds by itself.
  13. I'm in the process of building a WAD 300B PP amp, 28 Watts per channel. It was offered as a kit from World Audio Design years ago and has had some pretty rave reviews. If anyone is interested, I have a build thread going on audio-talk which is a European Forum. I have been researching this amp for the last six months and decided to make this my first venture into Valves. The transformers are still available from SP Wound and are made to order. There have been several mods and changes over the years and I am running an Excel spreadsheet with parts and sources. We will soon see what the Klipschorns sound like on tubes....! Here is a link to the build thread: http://www.audio-talk.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3542&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0&sid=f370293d2a52f4b0adfc1877d5adb250
  14. I totally agree with Groom on the Watco....! I just finished an amp base made out of Kelobra (very porus wood) and I think it turned out OK. Of course this was RAW wood, sanded down with 320 grit and it absorbed a lot of oil. That is the critical part, getting the proper penetration. It is six passes of Watco with the last three wet sanding with 600 grit wet/dry paper. Probably 20 to 30 minutes between coates. There are a lot of different methods of application, this is what works for me on raw wood. Follow the directions and you will achieve a great finish. Be sure to get the original finish off and be sure that the surface is perfectly clean before you start with the Watco. Whatever it takes to cut the original finish is key and will depend on what has been applied to the surface of the veneer/wood.
  15. The easiest way is to include whatever you think is fair for YOUR handling in the selling price. Most buyers RESENT a seller getting anything extra for handling. Even though you have extra cost in packaging, you must include that in the selling price. Remember, ALL buyers are looking for the cheapest price they can get and when a seller tries to add a handling fee the buyer feels that he is getting ripped off. That is just the way eBay is......shipping is a very sore subject on eBay as some sellers try to make up any difference in the shortfalls of their pricing in the shipping cost. Best advice is keep your shipping low and fair and include any cost for boxes, packing and tape in the cost of the item. JMO
  16. I don't know if you can call it a recall, but some time back there was a run of XTI 1000's that had problems with one side dropping out and many were sent back for repair. The ones I have were some of the very first available and I jumped on them for the DSP feature. Looks like the early ones should have exhibited the problem more so than later models. Possibly Crown changed some parts (cheapend) in later manufacturing, who knows. I am certainly not trying to disagree with anyone, just stating MY experience with them. One thing I can tell you is I am a pure NUT when it comes to grounding. Something in my electrical background makes me go overboard on this particular item. I do have a so called very nice Carver that sounds like a DEN of Rattlers when you first fire it but it quiets down after heating up. The other amps I use are McIntosh and SAE, both brands are rock solid and quite. I have had SAE "02" components for years and really like the quality. They really make up a nice rack system. Shame they are not made any longer in the states.
  17. Nope....Idle = No Hiss...Sorry to disapoint. No Hiss...Hum...Spitting...Buzzing...Crackling.....Actually NO Noise at all. Again, maybe I am the lucky one. W. C.
  18. Michael, Sorry.....No Soup for You.....! [] I have run the DSP an all of my XTI's, sorry....still NO Hiss.....! The sole reason I bought them was for the DSP. I was driving my Danley's with them in active before I bought larger amps. Maybe I was fortunate and got a "Good: run of these, as I said they were all bought from the same wholesaler and the serial numbers are within a few digits of each other. I've heard all of the stories about the XTI's, I have just not experienced any problems or the dreaded "HISS" from them. For me, they have been solid performers and I don't cut them too much slack when I drive the MCM's and the 362/682's with them at the airfield. They go through about three weeks of solid daily use at the main event in May. I still think the hiss is a source issue, but that is just my opinion. W. C.
  19. I certainly don't think the cables are the issue.....If it was me, I would look further into the source of the material you are playing. JMO, W. C.
  20. I'm sorry....I must be missing out on something. I have five XTI 1000's (all bought at the same time and what a deal it was.....!) They have driven MCM 1900's four way with HISM's and also three sets of KP 362/682 (2 over1) active through two DriveRack 260's. I'm just not hearing this Hiss....................maybe I'm deaf after spending 15 years as a starter at a drag strip, but on my systems the Hiss isn't there. Granted, they are cheap but they have done the job for me. They have driven these systems for the last three years, without a problem. Come to Woodruff, SC next May and you can certainly hear them......[] YOUR milage may vary............................. W. C.
  21. There were no plans, I bought the kits and assembled them. I am pretty sure that they are still available through the end of this month for $975.00 plus delivery, from Danley.
  22. Yes, I built both of them, they are awesome......I have a rather large room and I use them for risers under the seating. They go together easily, the finishing is the hardest part. They can litterly shake the building....! W. C.
  23. I guess that depends on how bad you want to build a second set. A single bin will cover a lot of area but it certainly doesn't look as KOOL as two stacked......![H]
  24. Totally agree with Claude.......I have MWM doubles and singles and the gain for the second bin on each side is not that much for indoor use. At levels that you could not stand indoors is when the second bin comes into play. The doubles are much more suited for outdoor, very large areas. Talk about overkill...............[]
