  1. AT home I listen to klipshorns For work(Paint contracter) I have a old bose wave radio the big one that can run on batteries. It has the option carying case makes it look good. Its real heavey and gets loud you can hear it all over a large office or a big House. It has way to much bass have to run with the bass defet maxedout. It does make a better than avrage paint radio and it plays cds to. Has worked well for 4 yearsI got it cheap on ebay. It funny how most pepole I work with think I am crazy using such a nice bose sytem for painting tunes. Then I tell them to me it just a Blose and for me it my cheap sytem. I cant think of a better loud portable sytem, unless I mount a tube amp and tuner in a Hersey. Now that would be a nice paint radio. with even tone. But for now who eles makes a radio I can hear while sanding with earprotection headphones on.
  2. I just finshed reading some very early klipsch brouchers and klipsch reprinted hifi news ect. I read 2 early Cornwall brouchers one from 1959 and the other from 1960. The very first Cornwall that was listed in catalogs had VERTICAL horns that were the same ones used in the short horn and early Hersey. The mid horn was much smaller than the later k600 horn. Port was in the rear center and ran top to botom (same as short horn) . The tweeter was a EV T35(same old one used from 58ish on up). Trim was the same as top of the line shorthorn (TV sylel front panel). The side of the cornwall were covered in same cloth as the front just like the early Hersey. I think they made the early cornwall up until 63 when the new Cornwall II came out with the lager mid horn and moved the port to the front. I think the early cornwall was desinged out of the shorthorn (same crossover/horns) also it had the same front panel. they just moded the sides and back making a deeper cabnet with better bass. My guess is that all early Cornwalls had vertical horns up to the time they droped the cornwall II name and the Cornwall came out Not sure what that date was maybe the late 60,s or early 70,s I have early 60 cornwall and a 59 shorthorn they look the same from the front . I wonder if HornBuilder Knows someone that was at Klipsch in the late 50,s that might know more on the cornwall history.
  3. For a killer sub do it your self project look at this! This baby goes down to 18hz and looks like it could keep up with klipschorns or lascalas. or maybe its just a bad Bose pipe dream. Anyway maybe I will build one for fun http://www.passdiy.com/speakers.htm
  4. Well I dont wont to mess with my crossovers at all want to keep them stock. The bass response was a perfect blend went plenty low to as well as the whole speaker.I love the sound as they are and a lot think they sound better then the later ones. I will just rob they EV 's out of my 59 short horns for now then hopfully find a good recone kit that works on the trusonics. There is somthing magic about the old khorns the 58 and 59's sound great but the 51 sound even better.someday I love to find another 51.or copy its crover with vintage parts.
  5. I restore cars as a hobby and run a Painting busenes for work. SO I am up with the latest painting products and tricks. I wood not cover my cornwalls with fiberglass if I wanted them to look smooth. fiberglass is real messy. Maybe he ment to say spray them with a fiberglass spray filler, which is a two part epox primer a lot like sparying bondo it is used to fill in cracks and pin holes. This primer is not cheap, the cheapest version of it sells for over a 100 per gallon plus reducers ect. There are many primer fillers (as they are called) made today that one could buy at a pro autobody store. The trick is to build up a thick coat of primer then sand most of it off down to a smoth and level surface. The best trick is to use a diffrent colored primer for the last coat. Then as you sand you will see all the high and low spots when the last coat of primer(the diffrent colored one) is sanded off and none of it shows in the pores the surface is as smotth as glas and ready for your finish coat. klipsch orig painted finsh was lacure this works about they same as above just takes more coats when using lacure primer surfacer.which can be found at a cabnet maker supplie house. Good luck
  6. Thanks All for the info and help. I did look at the 60 speaker on ebay thats a strang one I dont think that university was ever used in a khorn probly used in a Rebel or somthing like that. Why did my trusonics blow you got me.I have 4 khorns the two with other 15 are fine. the othe khorns are a 51 with stock jensen and a 58 with a stock 60 driver(not sure the make but its has a cast baskit and is not a ev). both trusonics that died were in diffrent rooms with diffrent equipment. I have the 51 khorn paired with a 59 both are model B and look good together The other set is a 58 and 59 Model D so they are paired together and llok the same. My 59 model D is on its seconed trusonic as the orig one started to didtort do two a long ripe on it paper cone maybe 4 inch long,i boght a replacment trusonic with the same # on enbay that was fine until recently. I am stating to lose fath in Trusonics but maybe its just bad luck. hopfully I can get them reconed locally.
  7. I have 2 blown Stevens trusonic 15" drivers in my 59 khorns. Anyone know somone that can recone them with good parts? Is there a new 16 ohm replacment thats specs the same ?
  8. I have 2 blown Stevens trusonic 15" drivers in my 59 khorns. Anyone know somone that can recone them with good parts? Is there a new 16 ohm replacment thats specs the same ?
  9. I have a few vintage khorns from the 50's with the wood mid horns. They are only wood on the side the top and botom are made out of some type of composite . maybe a early fiberglass?. To me they are warmer and fill the room with a larger sweet spot. I have some 1980 pro lascal tops(from 2 part lascalas same horns as khorn) I have used to compare the tops with. I just switch tops and hook up to the Vintage khorn crossover. Out of all my khorns my 51 with orig stock speakers sounds the best to me.
  10. The 60 khorns on ebay have Difrent looking Midrivers should be university for 1960 I think .The drivers look like recent models or maybe somthing diffrent all together. I thought klipsch used just 2 diffrent mid divers from 1950 to 1980 the the orig university or the atlas k55 all the old atlas seen have tapered round drives not even as these have???? Anyone seen drivers shape like this? The sound of the old wood mid horns to my ears(recoding studio owner) sound a lot smother and just plan warmer with both the Atlas and university driver. I would never trade my early horns for later. I have 3 diffrent style early tags on my khorns My oldest the 51 has the clear tag in block letters. The 59 style B has clear in scipt like the 60,s on ebay. My 58 and 59 style D have white with scipt in black (I like the looks of this type the best). I have a 60 cornwall with the same grill clothand finish a perfect match for a center, dam wish I was'nt already tapped out on khorns they would look mint together. Running out of room for anymore. But wait if I built some false walls and .......
  11. They used black textured lacquer or fiberglass coated on the pro cabnets .I read this in a bunch of diffrent industrial brouchers I have a lot of early 80,s pro brouchers and price list If you need more info. I think the industrial line was started in 1979 or 1980 maybe late late 70,s before that all they had was stock cabnets painted black or raw with stock speakers.
  12. BE real carefull sanding the lascalas as the Brich plywood top layer is paper thin. Its real easy to sand through or sand down so mush you see the 2nd ply through it. The top layer is about the thikness as a pice of paper. For removing smoke from the birch I would try washing them down with napha (any paint store sells it).Paint remove like 5f5 will aslo work at cleaning the finish but with bare wood its probly a wast of time. The smoke is most likely deep into the fisnish so a light sanding might not bring them back. You could also try a pro wood cleaner also like Cabots deck cleanear or even good old bleach. Good luch with you refinish.
  13. I always make a copy cd and keep the orig in a safe place.
  14. Peavey makes horn adapters that fit the Klpisch mid drivers screw on thread. They look real close to the adapters the old pre 62 klipschhorns used. The old klipsch horn took the altec/jbl horn patern 3 or 4 bolt "but came with factory adapters for the atlas(k55) and or university 1" horns.
  15. Hmmm JBL l 2482's I use to use a pair for mids in my old pa sytem, I always loved there sound.I had them paired up with large 60x 90 SFW horns . Maybe I should dust them off and try them out with some khorns. I think the old khorn mid(pre 62 or so) will take a 2" driver if the adapter is removed. I say one thing they sure can handel a lot of power and are real heavy.
  16. Tom, Sign me up for a pair! My 73 cornwalls are logo hungry.
  17. I found a 1985 Klipsch mcm1900 broucher . The tweeters are Horn loaded piezoelectrifc listed in the specs. Price new (one side only) $ 2810.00 list in stock finish 3628.00 in fibergalss with trim .
  18. Tubelion, Old khorn crossover for sale on ebay see link below... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3021147935&category=14993 The one on the left looks a lot like like my 58 crossover maybe its the same. I know mine does say 500-1000 on it.
  19. Formica, I did find a 1980 klipsch pro catolog showing the pro line at the time. It is a bunch brouchers in one folder I forgot I had them. I dont have a scanner and my digital camera is on loan til next week. I even found a dealer onlypro price sheet from 85 . I talk to a klipsch dealer a few years ago and pic his brain about old klipsch . He did tell me the lascala was orig built as a pro speaker in the 60,s and basicly unchange except for drivers over the years. I am 99% sure They never made them out of 1/2" plywood. Why would Klipsch cheapen one of there best sellers? Hornbuilder must Know about the build in the early days? As far as klipsch making cabnets out of 1/2" ply the only ones I know of was the real old/ Heresys from early 60,s late 50,s. They switched to 3/4 in the later 60,s when higher output speakers where made as the !/2 would vibrate at high output. The 80,s spec sheet which says both theatre/clubs perment installs ect. specs 3/4 quarters for all. The theater and pro speaker were the same specs, same speaker. I love to see some pics of this 1/2" lascala must be real real rare. I dont think the AA crossover was used in the 80,s pro lascal . I will have to look at my 1980 one which does have full protection with 2 fuse. Klipsch did make square top cabnets for the lascala in the 90,s But it would have the newer drivers with plastic horns ect. Post a pic of the lascala if you can.
  20. John, Thanks for the info on the peavey FH-! cabnet,It does look a lot like the lascala bass bin. I looked up the specs on Peavey's site www.peavey.com and it use the same speaker I have in my new cabnets. The cabnet is rated 104 db at 1 foot with the black widow driver. which are the same specs as stock lascala cabnet. so it seems like a good match. I will ab it with a stock speaker I have in another pro lascala.(I sold to my brother in law) next week when they are sise by side. The cool thing about the blackwidow speaker it can be reconed with a peavey kit with just a wrench and some tape(to clean magnet). The sell you a new basket you just remove the magnet and replace.
  21. Tubelion, These caps look a lot like the one in my 51 khorn crossover I attached a pic of the 51 crossover I know you wanted to see what it looked like! Next time I am have the cover off I will take better pics showing more detail. I would like to make a perfect copy of this one day for a matched pair or find one on ebay. or a whole 51 khorn to match mine. I have the 51 set up with a 59 right know.
  22. Formica, All pro lascala's I have seen or read about were all 3/4" plywood. Maybe the ones you saw were home made copys? I have owned the 2 part lascalas in painted black epoxy texterd finsh and the rarer model with the aluminum side and corner trim. I find the two part one to be worth a lot more than the one peace. One 2 part set just sold on ebay for around 1500 and a top half only (mid /high horns and crossover just sold for 535. You rarely see the pro.s for sale and just about always for more than stock units. New they cost about double what stock ones cost. I attached a pic of orig klipsch pro lascala two part in both styles.Did they look like the one on the Right? The klipsch tags were orig mounted on the inside botom of the lower cabnet and painted logos across the top unit and some on the sides. 600 seems real fair as the parts are worth more than that if it has the pro speaker in the bass bins and the pro crossover brings good money to a pro users that wants to convert a stock unit for high power use. The pros used the same speakers except for the bass and crossover
  23. I just received from RIGMA 2 lascala botoms to use with the my lascala tops I won on ebay last mounth. Now I have two complet 2 part lascals with all correct speakers except for the 15" bass drivers. They have Peavey black widow pro drivers in them.Has anyone compared the blackwidow to the klipsch pro driver(I think they are Gauss)? The black widow is a very havey duty driver rated at 350 watts countinous 700 peak. I wonder how close they sound to the stock pro klipsch driver? I do not plan on using them for home use already have khorns. I plan to use them for Band pa use along with some vintage altecs for that retro pa with big tube amps.
  24. ratshack, Boy what a dive they have taking over the years. They use to sell some preety good stuff way back when. Back in the day I have read the sold klipsch speakers like khorns. and some good tube amps.
  25. I had good luck to day a freind was cleaning out a retail store that went under and found a old scott amp. I told him I wanted it no matter what the condition. well I picked it up today it looks mint but the bad news is it not a tube amp. . It must be one of the first soild state scotts as it wood cabnet is the same ecept for the top it has 4 long slates instead of the gold grill. The other good news is the nobs have the same rare gold caps as my scott 310e tuner. The caps are almost always missing on the tunners. well the reciver came with 4 just the no I needed. I was thinking of redoing the cabnet top for more venting. mabyt find a orig type grill or cut more slates. Anyone have a scott tube grill?
