  1. strange. this was a 2.5a fast blow on the woofer. i do boost the bass with the preamp a bit, maybe +3-5db. from what i can tell they are the original fuses, so who knows, maybe that fuse was defective or just on the verge of blowing from the prev owner. i will stick with 2.5a to be safe.
  2. so should i go with the 2.5a or bump it up a notch to 3a? i do listen loud but never what i feel is damaging to the speaker, & i know when its too loud or causing distortion. im currently using an adcom 555ii amp & adcom preamp. never have i seen the clipping lights even begin to flicker, & with the k horn speakers i can barely get the volume knob to 50% & they are plenty loud for my small room. must have been a peak i didnt realize i was pushing it that hard. it was about the same volume levels i did on a onkyo 504 with meters, showed maybe 50 watt extreme peaks, average of 25-30 watts. i like the jbl idea that fuses can blow on a signal that wouldnt damage the woofer. like i said it was a song i have played many times before at about the same volume, maybe a tad higher but still nowhere near clipping. i will get some 2.5a to be safe but would like to step it up .5 on the woofers if thats ok. guess i take a chance with a woofer & find out. be an excuse to upgrade!
  3. well, i just blew my first fuse in my k-horns on the bass section. wasnt really driving them that hard, same as i have done numerous times in the past. the bass fuse is marked as a 250v 2.5 amp & i assume its a fast blow type. question is, would it be ok to increase the value slightly? i have a bunch of 3amp fast blow fuses i could use if a .5 amp increase was still safe. if not, i will get the 2.5amp. i do push them on the louder side so just want to be sure i wont damage the woofer with a .5a increase. thanks
  4. my opinion on this is that klipsch & the heritage speakers are very good sounding & hard to beat for rock & jazz etc, but the reason for this can be deceiving to the average listener due to their high efficiency. i have a pair of fortes that i had side by side with some definitive technology bp7006 powered sub speakers, they were both hooked to the same gear & on A & B channels. onkyo 90wpc receiver & cd player. i did the A-B comparison for a couple friends & instantly they all said "i like the klipsch way better." the reason, to them, was simply because they were "louder" at the same given volume level. to the average person it sounds as if the klipsch is "better" because its louder/clearer. what they missed was that if i turned up the volume for the def techs to match the db or spl of the klipsch, the def techs then sounded almost as good. & that issue is commonly overlooked when auditioning speakers in the store, they have the speaker selector that lets you switch to multiple speakers while the volume is usually left the same. my first system as a teenager was older onkyo receivers with MTX brand speakers, the AAL series with 2 12" woofers a cheap mid & peizio tweeter, they were awsome to a kid in the 80's & do have bass slam because of the woofer displacement. i then stepped up to a pair of kg 5.5 & was blown away at the better sounding mids & tweets & again by the efficiency that i didnt really understand at the time. but cheap MTX compared to klipsch was apples to oranges. then i got into home theater as 5.1 became popular & i could afford better gear, the kg's did front channel duty for awhile & i loved them, very under rated speaker IMO & the MTX would be hooked to a seperate amp for 4 channel music only. i eventually thought i'd try a different brand speaker mainly for movies & bought some def tech bp30 bi-polar speakers. after listening for hours in the store & realizing the volume had to be turned up a bit to compensate for the efficiency difference, i was very impressed with the def techs. there is no sweet spot with these or if there is its 10x better than any direct radiating speaker, & while not as dynamic or in your face as the klipschs, they have a warmth & "smoothness" that is pretty amazing, & such an open soundstage that makes you think they are bigger or more speakers than just the 2 you are hearing. the bp30's have 2 6.5" woofers & 1" dome tweeter on front & the same arrangement on the backs. with good power they are a very high quality speaker & for movies they really cant be beat. fast forward to recent years & i came across some good deals on the newer line of def techs with the built in subs, the first 2 generations weren't that good, (bp-2000's) but the recent bp 7000 & 8000 series are very nice speakers for music & movies. i own the bigger bp 7002's & they are excellent speakers for music & almost unbeatable for movies in their price range. the built in subs have very tight & fast bass & the sound stage is again, amazing. bi-polar speakers are a different type of sound but once you give it a try & realize its just "different" than direct radiating, they really do give a unique & pleasant listening experience. i also did a comparison to my "new to me" 1995 k-horns i bought about a month ago, & granted the k-horns cant be beat for sheer volume & dynamics, but turning up the def techs to match the DB of the k-horns (which requires about double the position of the volume knob) i can honestly say the def techs hold their own & even excell in certain areas... no harshness of the mids & the highs are crystal clear & smooth. the imaging & seperation is much better in my smaller room, the bass is different, not as punchy in the mid-bass area, but the lows are as good or better for the very low bass like in movies or modern bass heavy music. i have heard some higher end speakers like the B&W & paradigm & they just didnt do it for me compared to the klipsch fortes, cornerhorns or my def techs. for the money & depending on your listening needs, klipsch are excellent for music & even movies, but for movies & some music you just cant beat the bi-polar sound of the def techs, they make your room seem bigger than it is & give a very spacious theater like sound quality. dont get me wrong, im sure the super high end speakers are good too but i have never heard a $20K+ pair of speakers & dont plan to buy any in my lifetime. once i can get the k-horns into a bigger/better room im sure they will be more than enough for my dedictaed 2 ch music system & the def techs will stay as my theater set up with occasional music useage. sorry for the long post, the moral of this story is klipsch are excellent speakers & offer the best bang for the buck IMO but just realize much of that is due to the high effiency so dont let an A-B comparison fool you. when SPL's are equal, many speakers have their own strong points, it all comes down to what your ears like in your particular environment.
  5. check with the company that has the valspar. most places are able to put it into a spray can for a small fee. or buy the paint from them & go to a place that will spray can it for you. sherwin williams auto paint stores do it as well as most auto paint stores.
  6. very nice deal there but be carefull, i've been seeing a lot of ads like that lately on CL. you will get a reply saying "they just sold but heres a link to a place you can get great discounts on other items" all you have done is sent you email to a spammer that will sell it & you get never ending junk mail or worst case a virus on your computer. just use a junk email account for that type of ad. legit sellers usually post a phone number or use craigslist's email message system. sure would be a steal if they are legit!

    klipsch t-shirt

yeah too small for me to wear comfortably, some guys like their shirts tight though. yes its a very rare design, ive never seen one like it.
  9. didnt he say he wanted it? if not i may consider it if you can give a shipping quote.
  10. got a pretty rare klipsch t-shirt that doesnt fit me. it is light tan color with black logo. logo is in great shape but shirt has a very small pin hole on upper right front corner, common on older fabrics. it is size medium but wears a little small for mediums. measures 24" length & 17" pit to pit. would be great for a smaller guy or gal or as decoration to hang on a wall. the pic on the back is of PWK. $20 + small amount for s/h.
  11. i marked it as answered thinking it would close the topic, but apparently it sent it to the top as "best answer"
  12. It's a phenomenon now ? It's only fair that it should be called the klipschfancf4 phenomenon. Don't get to excited CF4 it's all relevant and technically Chad's the father. not really excited by it... & guess i really dont care either way, but this is the website & forum section, just thought id point out a quirk someone in the klipsch world might want to know about.
  13. yes the winter is driving me nuts too, but its not what is causing this issue.... chad: heres an example for you, i just posted a comment in the alerts section today about 2-3 hours ago... the time stamp says it was posted yesterday at 8:11??? totally incorrect. https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/148514-klipsch-kg-55-200-lancaster-pa/
  14. glad they went to a good home. thanks again!
  15. hard to say if its a good price with no description & no pics. youd think the seller would post a pic or 2 or maybe describe them a bit. at that price hes either desperate for cash, or they are trashed. or maybe its a good deal. worth contacting him & asking for pics/info. i just sold my kg5.5 & they are very good speakers for the average used prices. most under rated klipsch speaker there is IMO.
  16. IMO, if they are working there is no need to replace them. a new stock replacement diaphram shouldnt improve the sound at all. whereas a new titanium diaphram will be an improvement.
  17. why do you want to isolate the speaker from the floor? is there an audible improvement in doing that? always thought the idea was to couple the speaker to the floor, hence the spikes that are under the plastic feet covers.
  18. ok just wanted to be sure. seems to be random & not so bad lately compared to when i first posted this. could be something on my end too....
  19. take off the front panel by removing the screws at the rear, then carefully remove the staples holding the fabric & pull it tight then re-staple. ok, maybe not "easy" but definantly not difficult.
  20. well its pretty much just as i described. the clock is wrong, if i make a post, then when i look at the main forum page where it shows recent activity of all the sub categories, the time it shows that post was made is off terribly. for example, after i make this post, i can go back to that main page in 2 minutes & it will show i made the post 13 minutes ago. or some other incorrect timing. seems to be random & varies in the differences it shows.
  21. cool, my dad retired from rockwell, & i know a few people that work there too. would love to chat with you sometime about upgrade options to my k-horns. thought i was the only iowa member here.
  22. the horns are the 400's in the 85's & 401's in the 92's. from what ive been told the 401 horns are composite & sound "better" than the 400 metal horns. if you like oak, the 92's have a very strong grain pattern that will stand out, aside from the wrinkled grille material i would keep them since they have the "better" ak-3 x-over & 401 horn. the grille material can be tightened up pretty easy. but again, i would keep all 4!
  23. small world. i'm in cedar rapids, do you still live here? i was a frequent customer at the audio room back in the late 80's & through the 90's, heck i still go in there from time to time to audition the new stuff that comes out. i used to have a friend that worked there a few years after you stopped. great place to shop & audition. thats where i heard my first k-horns.
  24. actually every AVR i have seen will send ALL the LFE info to the front L & R speakers if you tell the receiver "sub off/no." its only split or designated to the LFE output if you select sub on. i used KG 5.5 & epic cf-4 as front mains for movies & they have excellent bass down to their limits. fortes are rated to 34 or 32hz, they will be great for movies. but i do suggest getting a better receiver. the one he has is from a "home theater package" i think & is made to power those little satelite speakers that dont need bass, the included sub handles that. so i would look for a decent used 5.1 or 7.1 receiver. if you are on a budget a 60-80 watt per channel would be fine. i would search for onkyo or yamaha for budget & quality, stay away from sony or technics as they are usually cheaper products. of course go with better brands if you can afford it, but i feel the 5-10 year old onkyos are the best bang for the buck. for a couple hundred bucks or less you can get an 80w/ch onkyo 605 or 676 on ebay or craigslist. that will be all you need for great music & movies on a tight budget.
  25. what is the purpose of those "wedges"? the kg 5.5 has lots of the same foam stuffed inside, just not a wedge. what does the wedge improve over the stock foam?
