    What I Got Today!

Quite right you don't get that at the regular theater. We used to do a variety of things there not acceptable in general public seating areas.
  2. SNP250IIA 0019002. Any idea when these were made? First time I have had a pair with the same K128014 mid range driver as the KP-301's
  3. Getting much closer to the final variant and I believe sometime tomorrow there will be a final configuration and after that complete plans later this week.
  4. Exactly right. It should sound like the band is in front of you. I don't want warm fuzzy smooth mechanical contrived natural organic I want accurate reproduction. Non of these live bands use $500 fru fru beeswax hermetically sealed caps with silver dust sprinkled on them in any of their equipment you paid so much to go hear.
  5. I am thinking it is a 200 + mile round trip to Paducah for me to hear good Klipsch speakers. I can however hear the B&W junk at more than one place far closer. The only difference is one manufacturer is actively promoting product and getting "samples" before people and one is not. Klipsch marketing is just awful and the only reason their growth is not far greater is their self inflicted marketing wound in my opinion.
  6. Carl's picture is a monument to something bad. The dude stripped all those Klipsch cabinets of Klipsch drivers and put in second rate stuff and thought he did something good. At one time I was interested in all of it until I found that out. He even stripped the K-4M and K-55-v drivers out of the midrange and threw that "junk" away !!! I never thought I would see someone spend that kind of money just to take and try and turn it into a JBL or Gauss speaker system.
  7. Yes the size issue. Knock a hole in the wall, stick this rascal through and use the protrusion on the other side for a bench seat. See how easy that was?
  8. I was not too serious about jumping down this rabbit hole any time soon it was more along the lines of it does not take much to amuse me.
  9. Another thought I had on the way home was what would happen with an 18" woofer and greater height on the ID. See how this could become a never ending nightmare .
  10. Height is 15.375 ID.
  11. Yes and the final plans will show that. I can move things around with the 3D CAD file and make drawing from those but taking the layout line drawing and changing that is a bit more complicated and I was lazy that night and in between two side ideas at the horn mouth. Figured it conveyed the basic idea though. My other thought is to just use 25MM Baltic Birch for the top and bottom and do away with those entirely. This is stock material in Nashville for like $56 a 5' x 5' sheet.
  12. Hey guys I have been on the road for two days so just home and TIRED. Of course I will redo the plans. I have to admit I was thinking about this very thing on the way home today Claude. I feel kind of funny asking people to do verification of numerous changes and I had another though beyond this one too. If you don't mind doing the Horn Resp stuff I darned sure don't mind redoing CAD files. Go to the link above for the finger joint router bit and joining the plywood will be explained. Easy peasy. Regarding the Skill saw yes the table saw would be the way to go. But this is simple enough you could do it with the Skill Saw, I would cut the important bevel edge first and the rest after that using a clamped on guide. Easier to mate dimensions to the finished beveled edge. This assumes you have a good angle guide to set the blade with and not rely on the one on the saw. Believe it or not this is how I cut aluminum plate up to say 5/8 thick bevels or whatever is needed for welding or fit up. Wear long sleeves and good glasses and figure on hot chips finding your skin no matter what you do.
  13. OK I have a trip to make so it will be a couple of days before I post the plans. I have 3D CAD parts done but need to generate the drawing from them. Claude says the K-33 woofers are the ones or Crites version of those. The object here was more bass and the K-33 beats the K-43 just to head that question off at the pass.
  14. Yes, what do you need.
  15. As an addition the plans can either be the .709 or 18mm Baltic birch thickness or the .75 standard plywood thickness. Contemplating doing these in 25mm Birch also for the outside pieces. I bought a Speakerlab Khorn the other day for the heck of it mainly because I wanted to see how tough it would be to build. Complicated like the plans I have seen for other things. Since I have the space these MWM's are dirt simple by comparison and I figure a good skill saw with a clamped on guide + a good 1/2" router is all one needs to build this.
  16. Looking at a set of MWM plans the other day got me to thinking about why did Klipsch limit the depth to less than 48" which was the width of a standard sheet of plywood. I had no idea what percentage of these were for theaters where space was a problem and how many ended up in places where outdoors or in big arena settings space would not be a problem. So they made a decision based on space restrictions I figure. My thought was what if one designed this around a 5' x 5' sheet of Baltic Birch and I did so using the same exterior dimensions at the front and back. This meant that the horn would be 60" deep and still 67.75" wide leaving two small sections to be added on to complete the shape. I had no good way of doing so at that time but modeled it that way and then also modeled it for the 60" wide sheet which would cut off some of the front width. In the mean time since Claude was kind enough to send me the set of drawings for the MWM I figured he would like to see what I was thinking of doing. He ended up providing technical assistance to interpret the results of what I proposed to do and validated that the idea had merit and added to it with suggesting adding back chamber space which improved it. He also came up with the Super MWM moniker so we have the Super Heresy and Super MWM's to play with. There are three iterations of this. One as shown below. One with the back center triangular guide like the La Scala with the addition of two corner pieces also. Then finally one that can be made without adding to the sides of the 60" wide sheet. If anyone is interested I can provide line drawings of all three. Now in regards to adding onto the length of a piece of plywood here is a way to easily and securely do it. http://www.rockler.com/finger-joint-router-bit#turnto-reviews-content Some comments from Claude regarding these. "6 db down at 32 Hz. -10 at 30 Hz. so yes, it's definitely usable. Had a higher peak 38 Hz. and a dip between it and 100 Hz. until I opened up the space in the triangle. The it flattened out like a pancake. You got the final version. I even tried other woofers, but the K33 is the winner. I think a Crites woofer would do just as well or better." Regarding the idea of using 60" wide instead of adding wood to get to the 67.75" wide. Considering the above mentioned way of finger splicing wood I do not intend to build just 60" wide ones for myself. " It's volume is more important than the small percentage of mouth area it adds with the taper. Also, the Crites woofer models the same way with about 1/3 of a db more output at 400 Hz. BTW this horn is way more flat magnitude response than the Khorn, Jube, or LaScala ever were." Really like these double MWM bins and the idea I can go lower like this greatly interests me and these will be the first speakers I actually build. Maybe if I actually get to the Klipsch gathering next spring I will bring a set to listen to.
  17. One thing about buying and selling is that I have had a chance to listen to a wide variety of Klipsch and if I am not happy with any of it generally at least get my money back out even if I don't get my time and travel back. I have bought three non Klipsch speakers. One was a pair of smaller pro JBL's and they are complete garbage and sound exactly like what they really are which is OK quality PA speakers. Won't take a chance on any of those again. One was an Altec 1234 and after restoring it was very musical just not my cup of tea. The third is this Speakerlab and it is just bad timing. Working on a variation of the MWM bin that will go a fair amount lower and that includes lower than the Khorn. Since I have the space the MWM wins every time and is simpler to build. I will say that Speakerlab used a seriously heavy casting for their midrange even though they did not clean it up very well around the inside edges at the mouth. The driver looks exactly like the K-55-V down to the number on the outlet side.
  18. Picked up a Speakerlab Khorn that consists of one plywood cabinet along with two square magnet woofers two K-55-v look alike drivers and heavy cast aluminum mid range horns. No tweeters and two crossovers and three big potentiometer looking things. The loose K-55 looking thing and the loose woofer both check out with a sweep generator and ohms. I did not check the ones in the cabinet out. I spent $350 for it all just because I was curious and now I am not since I have another project coming up of far greater value to me. Anyone around the Nashville area that wants a good Khorn template and some parts towards building a second one can have this for what I paid for it. I will list this on Craigslist and EBay towards the end of next week. Bonus is that you get this lovely set of Quartet cabinets including grilles with no badges to go with it. You just absolutely positively can't go wrong with this unless you are me and have no interest in building another Khorn. No pictures but if anyone expresses interest I will take some in the next day or so and post them. No there is no used car to go with this.
  19. Oh I completely understand but no coffee bean was harmed by association so at least one good thing comes from there. Getting to the point though where my favorite seller was bought out and all the good stuff ended. Migrated at that time to Costa Rican whole bean coffee regular roast from Coffee Bean Direct. I believe I will try some from USNRET and see how it is.
  20. Community Club Dark Roast was it for me until I discovered Kenya AA. On ice cubes of course for summer time.
  21. No expert please don't put that one on me. I have heard more pro perhaps than many and prefer them but expert? I have no opinion on these specific speakers based on having heard them in person. The closest to them I have heard was a set of KP-320's I had which had a passive instead of ports and a different horn driver. They were good sounding but not remarkable. MUCH better than Heresy's and better than KP-250's. Two way is not bad with the right stuff and comparing these to Cornwalls or Chorus I think they are better for mobile use and outdoor party tailgate use and not having to worry about pretty wood use. Thinking of the 320's I had they sounded good but the Chorus and Cornwall would be better for a home stereo or theater use and cost much more to. Bet you can get them cheaper than that and go listen and judge for yourself. They are certainly worth going to investigate. Downfall of pro stuff is some of what I have bought has been abused and required work so check it out carefully.
  22. For those of you who are DIY and have cad translators I have the 3D file for these drawn up. No I don't do sketchup or PDF but all other common 3D CAD program extensions I can export to unless you have something strange. Here it is in .stp or STEP format. 456 bass bin.stp
  23. Agreed and normally it is much better and cheaper to boot. " Amateurs read Stereophile, pros read the Parts Express catalog. " OK I can go for that.
