  1. The forums here have seen me tracking this project now for - almost 2 or 3 years.  It's been long enough that I've lost count of how long it's been...

About a year before my grandmother passed, she wanted me to restore her old GE hybrid console stereo that she had purchased in the 1960s in a custom finish.  Her indecisiveness led to me pulling the plug on the project a few times, and finances with me went through 2 or 3 series of uncertainties which kept delaying the finish or work to continue on this setup.

The original plan called for a pair of Heresy speaker parts, gutted, with retro-fitted motorboards to be attached inside the current speaker cabinets.  The system was originally spec'd to be powered by an Emotiva UPA-2 amplifier, and an XSP-1 pre-amp.  We kicked around a few ideas for the turntable, ranging from retrofitting the existing one to replacing it with a Music Hall model.

When she passed away last year, I decided that I was going to finish this project if it killed me.  The plans changed over this time too to something a bit more cost effective and practical.

@DizRotus supplied me with a Technics SL-1500.  The bump in the road occurred when it was discovered that the turntable was in fact too tall for the space that it'd be occupying.  Fortunately, I had a Pioneer PL-990 that I ended up using in the cabinet instead.  The SL-1500 went to live on my main system paired with a Schiit Mani, where the PL-990 is now in the top-opening portion of the console cabinet.

Next, @willland supplied a DPS-10.5 DVD player to handle CD's and discs, and also supplied an Integra DTM-40.4 Stereo Receiver.  The pair fit perfectly in the lower compartment near where the Vinyl was stored, and the dimensions allowed easy integration with the wire compartment I was building in under the turntable.  The solid output of the Integra units made any speaker I had temporarily housed in the built-in-cabinets come alive.  I tested RSX-4's, 5's, and an RC-3 on this unit, an none of them sounded anything like how they did on my other systems.  They sounded many times better.  I was excited to see how Heresy's would sound on it.

The old fabric in the console was nasty greenish looking drape fabric that was rotting and moldy.  This was tossed and replaced with some awesome grille cloth courtesy of Bob Crites.  The new cloth looked many times better than the green cloth did, and I'm advised it looks better than the original cloth looked when new.

All that was left was to find a pair of Heresy to cannibalize.  Originally I had thought about just buying parts, but when that proved to be too difficult, my search continued for a pair of Heresy to harvest and build into the cabinets.  During this time I measured probably four to five times a month just to make sure I wasn't going crazy and making sure that the cabinets were as close to spec as possible.

Finally, a pair came across my screen from Diz, once again to the rescue, and 1986 BR II's.  The deal was made, and they arrived last week.  I gutted the speakers after making sure they worked and immediately put a call in to Bob Crites again to get a pair of freshly cut motorboards.  Those arrived yesterday...

The boards were an exact fit.  The dimensions were right on.  I could not have fitted them any better.  Today, the backs went on, the wire keep was finished, and all of the drivers were brought into phase.  The 1986 Heresy II BR's, are now Heresy II mods, built into a Cherry 1963 GE Built cabinet, originally fitted with RCA speakers.  As for how they sound in the modified cabinets...they sound like Heresy's.

If I must say so...not too shabby.  I'll take some more pics tomorrow.

Before the wires were wrapped and placed in the wire storage area (upper right) they were loose in back.  Only one wire comes off the back of the console now - a sole power cable leading off a power strip mounted inside the wire storage area.

    34093504_1910254082332462_6212852442011271168_n.jpg.d12df1d197e704f57c4a66d1587552d2.jpg34178177_1910254115665792_4936287457541881856_n.jpg.e6e168d8ed1da125ccd07e4c4a158d4a.jpg

Right and left drivers mounted in the new cabinet.  The spaces around the motorboards are still sealed with solid wood.  The only exit point for any of the speakers is located on the inside rear where the speaker wire runs out of the compartments and to the amplifier.  Since the original cabinets did not have rear mounted terminals and an inline crossover - I opted to mount the cup and the crossover inside of the cabinet with bare wire running to the cup.  The cups are mounted with the rear facing down and the components facing up at the rear of each compartment.

  2. Well when u buy second hand that kinda comes with the territory. To many people ruin stuff sell it then try and claim warranty when they buy it cheap from someone. Not saying u did that by any means just saying it happens ALOT and that costs these companies lots of money and time, especially such a small one. The Bassx line was meant to be a much cheaper product, that was the whole purpose of it. Like I said mine sounds amazing. Rotel is not that great had a few of their products and Outlaw is the same thing as Emotivas higher series. Well good luck with whatever u do.

Didn't used to come with the territory with Emotiva. They used to just stand by their product, that's not the case anymore. I'm skeptical of about all of their products, especially since I had two Fusions and two ERCs go bad on me. Emotiva did nothing. I'm down to just their amps and the MC, and from what I've seen and heard it's not hard to find something better. I almost pulled the trigger on a DHC-80.3 for $600 to replace the MC-700, and if it had HDMI 2.0, I would have done it in a heartbeat.

Not sure what you're talking about with Rotel. They've been around much longer and have amazing reviews. Don't know where you get the thought on Outlaw either, but to each their own I guess.

I have none of those issues u speak of, sorry u are having bad luck with it. I can say I have NEVER had a great experience with most AV Receivers. Call their customer service, they are GREAT!

Since it's second hand, there's not a lot they're going to do for me.  When Emotiva changed their warranty policy a few years back, a lot of the legacy support went with it.  They're nice and all, but almost always default to sending an item in.  Save for XPA and XPR products, the MC-700 is likely the last Emotiva product I will ever purchase.  I'll move onto Rotel, Outlaw, or Cambridge.

I haven't tried the UPA Yet, or the Bass X amps, but I am actually impressed with my MC-700 Processor. I had a higher end Denon I was using and I can tell you its far superior movies and Music. It did however sound pretty bad before I set it up. But man what a difference after setting it up. I just went semi-cheap waiting for the RMC-1, as no point in buy the XMC now if I am going to get the even bigger one, haha. If u haven't tried the MC-700 you should, and I came from my Denons and $2,800 Integra and I would choose the MC over either every time.

I have jus the opposite experience with the MC-700.  I regret this purchase.  I feel I'd have been better off and saving for a different unit.  There's a ton of issues with the program freezing, it drops HDMI communication when in standby even if you enable the feature, and then doesn't reauthenticate with devices causing video and audio loss. There's a reason it's $600.  If I could do it over again, I'd have stayed away from it.

UPA-x series amps are amazing.  The x00's are anemic.  I have a 500 right now, and I really want to swap it out with something else.  It just doesn't have the oomph that the UPA-2 that I have does.

  6. Mr. Adams, I presume...

The issue you present is well detailed.  And I do believe finding a solution is quite simple.

    Are you stateside?

A cursory search found these Stereo Receivers - both I highly recommend:

  7. I plan on doing that.  I imagine they'll clean up nicely too.  I'm also debating on whether or not to refabric them.  I guess it'll just depend how nice they clean up.  I have a ton of left over grille cloth though, with nothing to use it on. lol

  8.
Those look familiar . . . sort of.   I’m curious to see how you incorporate the components into your mother’s console.  Did you play them before the dissection?
I will have full pics on this final leg of construction. They tested out very well when I received them. Put them through quite the paces, and they performed wonderfully.

  9. Does this unit have multi-in's? Might put it on surround duty if it's still here in a couple weeks, since I'm burnt out on this UPA-500.

  10. I've been consolidating a lot of stuff, and redesigning all of the systems in the house, so there's a bunch of stuff on the chopping block that needs to be rehomed.  I'll get pictures later on this week of most things, some I'll need to dig out of storage so that might be next week.  All prices are modified for forum members.

A few days ago, I received the Heresy II that Diz was selling.  My plan was to cannibalize the insides and use them to finally finish the console stereo that I had been rebuilding a few years back.  I've since gotten the parts out, and now have the bare cabinets.  I don't know how to price cabinets exactly, so I'm going with my best guess estimate off of eBay and saying $60.  No shipping on those.  I also have the grilles for them - in black.  They're very nice, and I don't have a need for them.  Again, I'm estimating my price and going with $45 shipped.

There might be some other stuff that I'm forgetting, but that's what comes up in my mind right now.

Pics: I have close ups on the woofers and cabs, in addition to these.  Let me know - don't want to clog the thread up with a bunch of random pics.

  11. You need to look for an AVR that has the features you want mainly.  Secondly, you need to disregard watts.  Most AVR's have misleading power ratings.  Few - if any - under the $1000 will provide you with more than about 80 WPC when all channels are active.  Most will provide you that with 2 channels at a time, but not all.  Klipsch speakers, likewise, do not need much power.  It's not about quantity,  but quality.

I encourage a modest modification to your proposed speakers (assuming you didn't buy them) -

RP-160M's - yes, they're worth the price increase

    RP-440C - again, worth it

    R-112SW - see above

    The RP-240S should suffice.

AVR's you want to look at would vary depending on your budget, but you'll want to examine Pioneer Elite's in the SC series (not LX), Marantz, Denon X series, and Yamaha Aventage (I highly recommend Integra too - above the rest - depending on your feature desires) - those are the usual culprits and should provide you with what you want.

If you opt for pre-amp and power amps, that opens a whole new realm of possibilities, but the question I'd pose at that point is what is your end goal?

You won't damage speakers by using a 50 WPC system, if those 50 watts are decent quality.  Likewise, it's highly unlikely you will ever utilize more than 8 or 16 watts under normal conditions.  Your peaks will use more - upwards to 80 or 100 watts, depending on your listening level.

  12. These seem to be generation II models, Klipsch owned.  The one in particular I'm looking at is the 2002 and/or the 2005.  My interest is piqued with these, especially the 2005, since my current 5 channel Emotiva is arguably the weakest amp they've ever produced.

    Congrats....just curious, what is AMU?

American Military University, it's part of the Public University group.  I opted with them since work has a good relationship with them, and there's a chance at some loan forgiveness there.

  14. Have a bead on some Aragon amplifiers, and am trying to get an idea for what kind of power and quality I'm dealing with.  There are two amps that stand the chance of being replaced with these Aragon amps, both are UPA series amps from Emotiva, one is the 00 subseries, which I am positive the Aragon would be an upgrade.

However, if I'm going to run an upgrade, I want it to be something that'd perform at the pace of the XPA that now anchors my system.  Does anyone have experience with the Aragon amplifiers?  How about both Aragon and Emotiva?  Comparable?  Vastly different?  If so, how?

ETA: @opusk2k9 - I think these are your amps that I've been stalking.

  15. I'm currently looking at the Yamaha T-S500 tuner to (for now) round out this system.  I'm going to be kind of crabby and insist it is the 500, simply because it'll match with the CD-N500 that's in my configuration as well.  I've tracked one down on eBay at $173 shipped, but I would prefer to buy from a forum member - as always.  This isn't a pressing thing either, I could wait on this for a while.

Anyone with one they're looking to part with, or have an idea on someone selling one for less than the $173?
