  1. yes Star Wars 4,5 & 6 have been released on Laser disc. More than once actually. I have the Boxed Trilogy set. Even in Dolby Pro-Logic,it sounds great! They are on DVD,but Foreign versions that are region free and will play on any dvd player. I bought them awhile back and regretted it! The quality sucked!! Worse than watching VHS! You can find new copies available on ebay. They are in Fox's 5-Star releases. Whcih should be good, but not taking chance. Also, they are the special editions, which I do not want. I did hear awhile back that Lucas is collecting stuff for the U.S. release of them. But no dates have been announced. When they do,I hope they get their heads out of their a$$ and release both the original theatrical versions with new special editions. I am one of the many fans that want nothing to do with new versions. Also want them in DTS. It will be interesting to see what they do with them.

    DTS / DVD's

I agree many studios waste too much space on bonus materials. I like bonus stuff, but much of it anymore is stupid. If the studio's compression company handles it well, you can have both DD & DTS,along with bonus features. Commentaries are another thing. I have never listened to one. And Foreign language tracks. WHY?! If we are buying a region 1 DVD,which is North America & Canada, why do we need these other languages? ABSOLUTE WASTE!! IMHO I did not buy Spiderman. Hopefully Columbia Tristar will add it to there Superbit line as well. 20th Century Fox is also hit & miss. They release some in DTS and some not. Paramount has not released any yet. But their DD tracks are very well done. The specs on Paramount's K-19:Widowmaker lists it as DTS. If it's not a misprint, this will be their first DTS disc. Some studios say they don't have the space. Which is a load of crap. They are just too cheap to add it. The DVD format is amazing for how much can be put on a disc. Perfect example is T2:Ultimate DVD. 3 versions of film, DD & DTS, plus loads of bonus materials. All on ONE disc!! Studios need to take a lesson from this release!
  3. I've had my DVD of Blues Brothers for quite some time now. But i have always been happy with it. Being an early Universal title, is the reason for being expensive. Most of their titles sold for $35 at the time. It is loaded with bonus materials. Interviews are really good. The soundtrack is only DD 5.1, but really good considering how old the movie is. Picture quality is really good also. If you are a fan of the movie, pick it up. Check around on Ebay and other sites to see what you can find it for.
  4. My experience with optical cables leads me to think they can be tricky. When I first hooked up my friend's cd player with optical,I plugged it all the way in and got nothing. Then I pulled it out just a tad and let it rest there, and it worked fine. He just recently moved. Same cable and same player. it worked after plugging it all the way in. Give that a try and also try reversing the ends and see what it does.
  5. I know that most electronics anymore have protective circuits to prevent damage to speakers from overloads. But has anyone here pushed there system hard enough to actually trip a curcuit breaker? After seeing Trans-Siberian Orchestra in concert Saturday, I wanted to see if I could get my 30's that loud. I don't have an SPL meter, so I don't know what kind of measurements I am getting. Most generally, when watching movies,I turn the volume up to -25. Which is plenty enough for living in a trailor! I put in TSO: Beethoven's Last Night, and slowly worked the volume up to -10. I was waiting for my ears to start bleeding! LOL. I then moved it up even more. When it hit -5, the circuit breaker tripped. The power in whole room went out! Went to breaker box and reset it. This happened with only running 2 speakers. I had it in stereo mode. I was just wondering what stories others have had with things like this?
  6. Check out http://www.telarc.com/ When it comes to musical quality, Telarc is top of the line! You can actually order directly from their site, or get the correct info and search ebay. But telarc has quite a bit of classical. Classical recordings done by Erich Kunzel & The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra are amazing!! Especially 1812 Overture in DTS!! I've gotten really picky when buying. Just because it says "Digitally Remastered", doesn't mean it's any good. I have bought a couple of those and they sounded like crap! So beware. Try Telarc, they might have what you are looking for. Hope that helps some!
  7. I just watched ST last week for the first time in almost two years. I've always liked the film. Great computer graphics and the sound kicks a$$! It's only Dolby Digital but still holds up! I am hoping Columbia TriStar will add it to their growing Superbit line.
  8. Lone Palm- do you have the original stereo cd or the newer DVD-Audio version? I had the original and then got the DVD-A version earlier this year. It blows the original away! Setting up my friends system after he moved, I put that disc in and let it rip! he couldn't beleive the bass. Then I unplugged the sub. He has a pair of KG 3.5's. He couldn't get over how much bass was still coming out of them! It is a great demo disc. Lovedrummin-I got the new version of it from Telarc's website. http://www.telarc.com/
  9. I got the Disturbed from digitaleyesdvd.com Got it the other day. Listened to it and it kicks a$$!! The disc also has behind the scenes footage of the video and making of the album. Also got Gary Moore disc coming. I like his blues music.
  10. Eevn though I don't have DVD-Audio setup yet,I buy the discs because they are backwards compatible with a DD or DTS track on them. You can find good deals online for anywhere between $15-20. I just ordered the new Disturbed for $14.98. Cheaper than the standard cd! Last time at a Best Buy,they were starting to get a good selection.
  11. I agree entirely with you EAR! Anybody who isn't using full range speakers for surrounds is missing out. I love to demo my set-up with subs off to start. Their mouths hit the floor when feeling all the bass! Then I say "Oh,by the way. The subs aren't on"!! Then I turn on the sub amp and let 'em rip! I know most people don't have the room for full range surrounds. So I understand why some would not get them. swj2000-I suggest getting the RFs and using them up front and moving the KSFs to surrounds. No they are not perfectly matched. But it is a good start. Down the road, look for a matching center since it is more important to have it match than the surrounds. then eventually get another pair of RFs to put in back.
  12. I like Mel Gibson and thought he did an excellent job . But there was something about the movie didn't get me. It was probably that I was expecting more with all the hype surrounding it. I'm not a big war movie buff, especially the Vietnam movies. So it has to do a lot to keep me interested.
  13. Sorry, about the only concert LD I have is AC/DC's Live at Donington(which I wish they would release on DVD)
  14. I loved the movie! It made up for the disappointing WE WERE SOLDIERS & BLACK HAWK DOWN. I figured WINDTALKERS would be good being directed by John Woo. For not having a DTS track, it still sounded awesome!
  15. Glad to hear others still enjoying them! Recent purchases have been on ebay. Got great deals on many.
  16. I can't remember the actual technical terms. But I do know that there are two types of dual-layer. One reads the first layer all the way across, goes back and alines to the 2nd layer, then reads across it in the smae direction. The other type will read the same way. But when it comes to end of layer,It alines to the next layer at that point and reads it in the OPPOSITE direction. It is amazing how they get so much content onto a disc. take the T2:Ultimate Edition for example. Single disc version of course. I have the single disc and have a friend that has the 2 disc set. I compared the 2 boxes. Both versions have the same content!
  17. I am wondering how many out there are still using laserdiscs in their home theater? I am still a fan of laser. I just watched Titanic (DD) and Armageddon (DTS) on laser this weekend. Awesome!! I will never buy these two movies on dvd! I will admit that some LDs don't have the picture quality of dvd. But the DTS LDs I have will give dvd versions a run for their money. But when it comes to sound, LDs are superior to dvd, hands down. I love the dvd format, but have to complain that some studios do not know how to handle it. Too much compression. I like bonus materials, but think some go overboard with it. I see so much useless stuff on discs. That is why I believe Pearl Harbor dvd could have been better. Even the DTS track was disappointing. Hats off to Columbia TriStar for bringing out the SuperBit line! For those of us that want pure quality instead of a load of crap! Earlier this year I paid about $100 for a copy of Blade (DTS) on laser. WOW! It totaly blew away the dvd! It is such a shame that LD never caught on and made it big. I personally wish that they could have used some of the dvd technology and applied it toward LD.
  18. I have it on a 24kt gold cd and it is one of my all-time favorite cd's. I can't imagine what it sounds like as a SACD!
  19. I have had good luck with http://www.digitaleyesdvd.com/ They have good selection, reasonable shipping and great customer service!
  20. wesgoff-the 5.5s are worth the price alone if in good condition. I bought a used pair at beginning of yr for $400 and think they are awesome speakers. I moved them to my surrounds after I got the KLF-30s. If the ones you are looking at are in good shape, get them you won't regret it!
  21. I will say Saving Pt Ryan is one of the best DTS. the opening beach scene is awesome. And toward the end when the tanls arrive, really shows powerful bass. There are a lot of great ones available, but U-571 always stands out. When the sub is being bombarded from the depth charges. Apollo 13, and Jackal are also really good. Like SPRyan, they are among the first DTS dvds with full bitrates. One of the disappointing DTS of late is Pearl Harbor. The scene of the attack is missing the punch that I am used to. It might have something to do with the space wasted on bonus materials. Now,on the DD front,I have recently watched Matrix and We Were Soldiers. Both lack a powerful soundtrack IMHO.
  22. Agree on ELO, Fleetwood Mac, and Eagles. I will add: DVD: Tina Turner:Live in Amsterdam Scorpions: Moment of Glory (with Berlin Philharmonic) Rammstein: Live Aus Berlin DVD-Music from 5.1 Entertainment: Classic Rock (George Thorogood,Billy Idol,J. Geils Band, & others) DVD-Audio w/DD or DTS tracks for DVD-Video players: Metallica: The black album Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture (DTS) This will really show off your system! You get plenty of bass without subs! BUT, BEWARE THE CANNONS!!! When purchasing concert DVDs,I prefer DTS,they are usually done better. The only example of a DTS track that is bad is Alice Cooper's Brutally Live concert. It sounded like crap!! I don't what they did different, but it was terrible!
  23. I don't have The Scream on cd but have it on cassette. My HK decks give cd quality sound if the tape is good. I will give it a try tomorrow. If I want to get carried away, I can hit the "tape monitor" button and pump up the bass. I have it looped with the bass restoration unit.
  24. OP-I think the bass issue is with the source. Like you said, they wasn't much with music. I have noticed the same issues with my 30's. Some cd's have some decent bass, while some has nothing. In my system,to show the power of the mighty Legends, I put in the DTS edition of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. I leave the subs off and let rest of the system rip. Pick up this disc from Telarc. You won't regret it! 25. I have been a HK lover for several years now. I have had my AVR-80 for quite some time now,and it still works great! Just recently,I have hooked up new ones for friends. They have been the 120,220, and 125 models. I think they are awesome! They live up to their reputation. The disadvantage of their lower models are the absence of pre-outs. So there is no way of hooking up external amps. My friend that has the 220 wanted to hook up his pair of OHM's,but couldn't. The only thin I don't like about their new recievers are the silver buttons. They stand out too much. Their older models everything was solid black. But other than that, they are sticking with the plain & simple look which I like. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ ------------ Mains: KLF 30 Rears: KG 5.5 Center: KLF-C7 Subs: (2) Antique wooden coffins with (3) 12" Advents in each Receiver: HK AVR-80 DD Processor: HK ADP-303 DTS Processor: Rotel RDA 985 AudioControl Phase Coupled Activator Series Three TV: Toshiba 42H81 42" Theaterwide DVD: Toshiba 4109X Laserdisc: Yamaha CDV-W901 5 CH Amp(for Speakers): Rotel RMB-1095 5 CH Amp(for subs): Rotel RB-985 Single Cass Deck: HK TD-420 Dual Cass Deck: HK DC-520
