  1. So I am thinking I am getting ready to make the jump and turn my Cornwalls into Cornscalas. I'm looking at an ALK universal crossover and the Fastrac Cornwall Horn. My question is what do you goes think about that midhorn. How about its off axis response. I like my speakers to provide as wide a decent listening area as possible. Also wondering about the Crossover point. Aren't the original crossover points 400hz and 6000hz. Does the ALK crossover substantially change that? Thanks Russ
  2. I think the forte 2 goes lower but the overall sound and quality out of the Cornwalls is much better
  3. Has anyone just done a crossover upgrade or rebuild on 30+ year old Cornwalls? If so which did you use and what were the benefits?
  4. All of the above and a couple of decent eBay sellers. Like Viva Tubes. Jim McShane is the man for new tubes. His screening process is great and his customer service is awesome.
  5. Beautiful pair. I've been planning on modding mine since I got them last year but they're in such great condition and sound so nice that I haven't been able to bring myself to do it
  6. Friday Night in San Francisco by Al Dimeola and the rest... is a good one I didn't see mentioned yet. Ella Fitzgerald's Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie, the one mastered by Dennis Drake, on CD is great.
  7. Beautiful. I think you should take this time by loading up this thread with sultry pictures of your current Genesis and Pre. Speaking of the preamp, what tube combo does that use. Did you try your Genesis alone and then with the pre? What were your thoughts?
  8. I've always thought the difference between good NOS tubes wasn't huge but between a good NOS Tele or Sylvania and say a JJ 12ax7 was noticeable. That and some amps can benefit from a better rectifier tube. Though I have come to find out lately that the design of an amp dictates if rectifier tube rolling will make a difference. Then of course there is reliability and longevity. Big difference between NOS and current production tubes.
  9. Not an amp designer but from what I've read they pick the design and tube type to accomplish a certain goal and meet certain specs then they voice the amp with small part changes and adjustments with a specific tube and tune for the sound they want. I've actually heard that last part as an argument against tube rolling.
  10. Are you talking about running straight out of your soundcard or using a separate DAC. WASAPI is still available for Windows 10. I use JRiver to a Rega DAC-r and use ASIO because of the Rega Driver but can switch to WASAPI if I like. Some sound cards default to ASIO like higher end Asus and Creative Labs. I like to bypass the mixer if only to avoid system sounds playing through my stereo. Though I don't really notice any sound difference between WASAPI or ASIO. if never tried Direct Sound or any of the others.
  11. I think the only thing I would replace them with at this point is a mint pair of Decorators that I could restore.
  12. I've seen non mint pairs go for 1100 at a local vintage stereo store
  13. That's an awesome deal. I have a CWO pair with risers in mint from 1985 that I got for 699.00. Drove 6 hours to just south of Boston pick them up. They're amazing. I keep meaning to do lots of upgrades to them but really enjoy the sound as is.
  14. That's good to know. So it won't effect the input sensitivity much?
  15. You guys noticing any gain differences between the E80f and EF86?
  16. Shindo, Leben, and Luxman all make great tube gear. How about vintage Sansui stuff, any love for it here? A Sansui tube receiver was one of the first pieces of tube HiFi gear that I ever heard.
  17. I think his upper end amps are pretty much built to order with some degree of customization. Well probably most of his amps are. Which is great if you have another person that will be living with them. The Genesis I ordered was probably the easiest hi-fi purchase pitch I have ever made. She looked at it for about 5 minutes and had no complaints. The most WAF I have ever seen in a product that I want.
  18. The man is definitely an artist. We talked about Hashimoto and Tamura Iron, and Jensen copper foil in oil caps. Some really tasty pieces there.
  19. Gorgeous. I was sure I wanted brass but now I'm not sure. Anymore progress? What capacitors, power supply and transformers are those bad boys coming with?
  20. Currently running 6L6 big bottles in the G6 and 6J5g in the Linestage the twins3 (Medium).jpg Matt ♪ ♫ ♪ edit: the T12 blocks will have KT88 Gold Lion output tubes What EL86s and EZ81 are you using? Gotta say I'm dying to see these Transcendence Monos. I've never seen a single ended KT88 amp before.
  21. Awesome! You are going to love your G6. Mine sounds incredible with the Scala's. Congrats My living room is approximately 15' x 20', partially open to one side. Speakers on the short side, LP distance about 10-12 feet from speakers.Matt ♪ ♫ ♪ Nice. What's the tube compliment on those bad boys and what are you running in the G6 and your preamp? If I may ask.
  22. Wow. Bet that will sound nice. I just got in the queue for a Genesis 6 custom integrated for my Cornwalls. What size room are you filling with all that tube power?
  23. After the Fisher is done my next project is an ALK crossover and a Fastlane Audio Midhorn for my Cornwalls. Nothing like Vintage Tube gear and some Klipsch or Cornscalas.
  24. Reviving this thread because I have a 500c at NOS Valves now and am looking for tube suggestions. I have what I think is a nice mix in there now, Matsushita in tone and phono spots, NOS TungSol Blackplates in the phase inverter and Sylvanias in MPX spots. I know people love the Teles they came with and I'm going to try a pair. Right now I'm trying to get as much info about the 500c as I can and some tube suggestions. Anyone tried any 5751s? Also, how much effect will the phase inverter tubes have on the sound? Anyone have suggestions for any additional things they got Craig to do? Any parts upgrades or mods? Thanks
