  1. I plan to create a separate thread regarding the tuba subs and few other things, but what I want to say here is a couple things -- First of all, SWL is a cool dude and great to deal with. I was fortunate enough to get a referral to him from another member here. I had originally contacted Jason str, and discussed having a tuba HT built for me. Due to a budget issue (my issue), I have to wait on that. But in the meantime, he connected me to SWL here. I ended up taking the RSW simply because it matched so well with my setup and system. With that said, I'd like to take a moment to talk about the tuba subs. I had read A LOT here and elsewhere about them and I know many have opinions about them. But have you heard them? I have. And they are extraordinary. When you hear the name "tuba", or see the designs, they look clunky, big, chunky, basically something like "there's no f****** way that thing can play real bass like a normal ported sub". Um that's wrong, very wrong. SWL had 2 of them going in his living room, working with some beautiful modified KLF30s, and a very well treated room. The sound was extraordinary. You could not tell where they were, I actually asked was that a treatment and he said no, those are TWO of them low profile, standing up, playing together. My thoughts on these were blown away...they are tight, musical, powerful without a resonance or a murmur. They are every bit what a typical ported sub can do and more. And with that said, since this is not my rant/rave thread...SWL has a beautiful tuba sub available and at a great price. If you haven't heard one and are looking for a great sub at a great price, I strongly suggest you go listen. If nothing else, you'll make a friend and learn something. Anybody who says those tuba subs don't do the job either haven't listened to one, or have a really strong opinion based upon knowledge I don't have. Can't thank SWL enough, I figure if nothing else a strong endorsement for him and his wares should help the process! RK
  2. Scrappy exactly. At full price u could get a klipsch dealer to beat the reference with ref premiere. I figure bb gets a big profit by giving them away once a year than charging full the rest of the time.
  3. Just get both. MLO if I may ask...I think I understand the concept of three matching speakers for LCR, how couldn't they sound perfect together? But aside from that...when selecting a compromise center, it seems like there are a few issues...one is the quality of the center itself, without respect to what it's going with. Maybe the RC64II is your favorite, for example. But then what you pair it with also seems to matter. Is it only a matter of testing a particular setup, or have you found that one or more of the centers works best in most cases no matter what you are pairing them with?
  4. Thanks Derrickdj1. I picked up a Denon AVR3808CI in great condition cheap. The knock on it is the remote sucks, but I picked it up and got everything setup without a hitch. I'm guessing the issues are more if someone wants the remote to do everything -- I just want it to run the AVR, imagine that Upping the bass was definitely smart. I will experiment with how much and it's effects. I'm honestly shocked how much improved the sound is overall. I've got the sub in the back of an L-shaped room and although I may try one other spot up front, I'm really surprised it's blending so well.
  5. Thanks Garyc. I will tweak the bass up and see what it sounds like. Amazing how fixing the phase through correction made the sub disappear.
  6. I've run a calibration tool before but never Audyssey. I just got a used Denon with XT, ran it, and thought it came back very muted on the high end. I read a bit and saw they have a roll-off on the top end, and if you don't like it, use Audyssey flat which is the same without the rolloff. Using the corrected flat setting, I found the results stunning and terrific. Any thoughts on this or your own experiences with Audyssey and tweaking the settings? Thank you, RK
  7. I prefer bookshelf speaker for backs. I think any would work as the backs don't work that hard comparatively.
  8. Wall mount 250s anywhere on wall using a brillant simple product called a Snaptoggle. Keyhole mount and use small felt pads on bottom corners to eliminate vibrations.amazon for snaptoggles...5 min install for each.
  9. Your no compromise solution that fits is an rc62. Just under 13inches deep and front ported to solve port issue. Not as good as 3 of same but would work. With that said rp250c sounds better imo. But porting is important with center that you will be cranking up for ht.
  10. MLS no doubt and the newest tech is also fun to have. I'm in Chicago Fiveoh
  11. Buying good quality used speakers is what most if not everybody here does at least from what I've seen. you need to forget about having to have them be new, and instead consider what you can get when buying used. You are in control, you get exactly the quality level you want. I get the sense you are only thinking about new....that is a mistake honestly. Moving up from 2 6-1/2" drivers to 2-8" drivers will be nice but won't blow you away. But moving up to those RF83s with 3 -8" drivers, or RF7s with 2-10" drivers....yeah, that's a big big change. Having heard the 62s very recently I suggest making a jump past the 280s to a higher level speaker...which is of course up to you. But used you can get RF7s and a sub. Same goes for the sub. I saw an HSU in my area VTF-15H (older model) offered on craigslist for $600. Right now someone else is selling a HSU VTF-15 MK2 (latest model) and asking price is $800 -- meaning you can get it lower. Once that used speaker is in your house and working fine...it's the same as if you bought it. Because the minute you buy it...it's used. Think about this and a world of options opens up to you.
  12. MLO can you frequency test your RF7iis? It sounds like they are causing the issue perhaps due to THEIR placement? Sub cannot correct it no matter where placed but maybe the fronts themselves have an issue with the room at that frequency. By changing the cross downwards, you were having the RFs do that frequency...when you moved it back up the sub took over and fixed it?
  13. I had an RC25, I crossed it at 80hz and it worked great. The response of that speaker actually is 82hz, but with the port they included it extends down to 74. What that means is that IF you intend to listen at very high volumes, it would be better to have a higher crossover for that center, in the 90-100 range. The speaker can handle 80 I think no problem at high volume but will sound best with a slightly higher crossover so that it isn't working at its limits on the lower end.
  14. If you recall, I had PM'd you and sent a link to the Dolby Atmos installation guides. Here's an excerpt on height: "...If possible, the height of the rear speakers should be the same as the height of the front speakers. If the room design makes this impractical, or impossible, the rear speakers may be higher than the front speakers. However, we suggest that the height of the rear speakers not be more than 1.25 times the height of the front speakers." Height and placement are critical for Atmos...you have to do it "right" within guidelines to get the sound you're looking for (imo).
  15. The 28Fs were on sale at BB during their Black Friday sale, they were half price which was 450/pair. So what you have I'm guessing is a return or open box version of them. Nothing wrong with that at all at that price!
  16. I have the 28Fs in one theater. Although they are not the RP280s I'm honestly not sure the difference would be worth it unless you really want a great speaker...and then I might not even say the 280s. The tweeter is aluminum instead of titanium, and the woofers are made of a different material. BUT -- they do sound pretty good. I'm sure at a very high volume level there's a big difference, but not one that matters to me.
  17. I'm not particularly interested but was wondering if this is a fair price to ask for a pair in good condition?
  18. I'll summarize my experience: 1) Signed up for daily deals. 2) Went online and entered the promo code for a Klipsch sub and there was a glitch, it wasn't working. 3) Called customer service, after a wait, she said that the system was having problems and so they were only taking orders at the moment for in-store pickup. (!)(a) She told me I could wait maybe an hour and place an order online that would ship. 4) Tried about an hour later, no luck. 5) Tried again later that evening. It allowed orders for in-store pickup, but not for shipping. 6) A few days later, the same offer was posted, again with free shipping, different promo code but same deal. 7) Went online, tried to place an order to ship to me. Wouldn't allow it -- but would allow in-store pickup. 8) E-mailed customer service with my concerns that I had tried this no two different occasions, could I get the deal shipped to me? 9) No response (!)(, now a few days later. So listen, I never have bought anything at Frys before and don't have any experience with them except this one. It's deceptive practices on their part, plain and simple. It COULD have been an advertising error, if she simply would have said so. It could have been a systems problem, except they made no effort to honor the deal. And the "proof" to me that it's intentional is the fact that customer service didn't respond -- at all -- to a simple inquiry asking about the offer. None of this means you shouldn't go there. I'm just saying wow what a lame experience it was trying to purchase something from them. If they don't want to ship cool no problem. But the sleazy old-school sales of making you go in the store just tells me don't bother.
  19. Are those Klispsch speakers that survived the war? lol!
  20. Oldred ftw! Lol Only saying they deceive in their ads to force you to go instore. I live an hour away from a store but personally won't do biz with a company that does that. I live closer to ABT enough said.
  21. Final answer: I tried one last time this afternoon to see what would happen. Now it says out of stock. They are a scam company, plain and simple. Perhaps they do sell you exactly what they say they will, but their game obviously is to make you come into the store to get what you want. I could...it's an hour away, but honestly a company that plays that game can GFT. Frys is bull****
  22. Serious question. I signed up for the daily deals after seeing someone mention them. I tried to get a sub deal on 2 different occasions, both times it didn't process through their website. I sent an email to customer service...no response. Anybody deal with Frys and have any comments/thoughts?
  23. Thank you calhockey10! Was an excellent deal and you shipped extremely fast. A+ seller rating RK
