Well - for whatever reason, I can't flip that pic around! Rest assured, however, it my house the table is NOT upside down. The sound is, a little, though. I put a Denon 103m on it. It is definitely *MUCH* different than the Thorens. The sound is not as bold. Not as big. It is, however, more detailed, and not in a bad way. I've only got 3 albums on it so far, so that is about all I can say.

It's big. Really big. But more than that, it is heavy. It has to be twice what my Thorens is in its current plinth. According to The Vintage Knob, as great asource on the web as there is for 80's vintage DD tables, it was one of the better tables made by Yamaha. In the 80s. For whatever that is worth. Kidding! It is pretty impressive. It has a really nice linear arm and a cool automatic play system.

Well the trusty Thorens 124 has been taken down for a major overhaul (new plinth, SME 3009 rebuild / rewire, another new tonearm on the way). Knowing the pace at which I usually work, I figured I'd take advantage of the situation by grabbing a new table of the 'bay. Thinking back to the great Thorens 124 vs. direct drive arguments, I figured, "Why not!" Enter the Yamaha PX-2:

It is near the YMCA there. 10 years ago, when I was in law school and eating at a coffee shop off near the Water Tower, I overheard a conversation of 2 English speaking Europeans. They were making their way across the states, staying at various YMCA's and hostels. Apparently, according to these two, that "Y," at that time, anyway, was known far and wide to offer a swinging good time, if you catch my meaning. As for the tower itself, I'd say skip it ; )

Heys guys...thanks for reminding me of some of my most valuable records. My mom passed away when I was 23. I have her little red portable 45 carrier with her records and, you can't see it in this pic, *very* detailed index. edit: You CAN see it if you maximize that big 'ol pic.

Yeah! That is a great deal on the P24. As for the P25, it is a pretty good deal. The RB600 is standard on that table, though, so I wouldn't pay a premium for it.

Jeez...I see like 10 a day. In addition to the regular truck we have a lot of the ice cream bicycle vendors - the bikes with the giant coolers on the front. Bells. No recording. They are all over the parks next to my house. I have a 3 yr old. It's crazy.

I know that smell; I lived in Milwaukee for five years. Not too bad unless competing winds mixed in the tannery smell. That city smells.

Giordano's or Lou Malnati's Top Notch. For pan? Lou Malnati's is my choice if I have to go with a chain, which I'd prefer not to do. Gulliver's on Howard for pan is my choice. Good choice Kev, I lived in Rogers Park years ago and Gulliver's was a frequent stop along with The Heartland Cafe. But probably a bit far north for a one day visit to Chicago. For thin my favorite would be Pizza D.O.C. on Lawrence just north of Lincoln Square. Yeah! Love the D.O.C. for thin. Also Candlelight on Western and Howard re-opened as a family friendly restaurant and bar and has great thin. Also love Heartland, btw, nothing like sitting near the Morse stop eating and people watching in the summer.

Reproduction cardboard boxes? I've got plenty of real, gen-u-ine cardboard boxes available for that kind of $. Silliness aside, Thorens 124 prices have been going through the roof since Dudley took a liking to them. Considering what you get new for $1,000 - $1,200, that price seems like a bargain for a machine like a Thorens.
