  1. Not much between Fairbanks & Anchorage except the 400 miles of tourist filled roads, at least in the summer. Have family down there so it's never a wasted trip. Always look forward to a 'vintage' find. This speaker collecting thing does get addicting. šŸ˜Ž
  2. Seller seemed ā€˜perturbedā€™ that I asked for additional pics of the drivers. His one word response was ā€œLaterā€. Will wait to see if he sends anymore. Theyā€™re 400 miles away so Iā€™m not making a trip unless Iā€™m buying. Guess I was more concerned with the quality of the older series drivers. I prefer a little patina in the finish. But want to know Iā€™ll getting the best sound I can out of them.
  3. Interestingly enough, I was just looking at another pair of Kg-4's that came up on CL when I noticed a pair of black 5.5's listed also. My wife really likes the 'mid century' look so a wood finish is mandatory. Hence, my Klipsch Rvx 54 HT system has been relegated to storage and the 'vintage' look is in order now. When the BEC x/o's & Ti tweets get installed I'll decide if the L-pads are necessary. My ears aren't what they use to be with 40 years of construction caused tinnitus limiting my hearing range somewhat. Your step by step tutorial on building the L-pads gives me confidence that even a clumsy electrician like myself can play with the 'nuances' of fine tuning these great speakers. Thanks again. P.S. Australia is on our 'bucket list' of places to visit before my wife & I are too old to enjoy the traveling. G'Day Mate
  4. No, not much of a deal at all. Probably best to just keep listening to my KG-4's and see what pops up in the future. Still waiting for those elusive Chorus ll's. Then again these have been advertised for a while: https://kenai.craigslist.org/ele/d/vintage-klipsch-la-scala/6625981428.html
  5. @JohnA Thanks for that link. I'd been looking for that. Yes, I see they are '72's. Heritage models don't come around often up here. But I'd be putting a few hundered $$ into them to get them back to decent shape. Are the drivers all replaceable?
  6. @JohnA Is that assuming a '72 or '77 model or either?
  7. @baron167 Can that be verified? Owner says he bought them in 1977 and has had them stored in the 'barn' for years. Don't doubt the storage part due to the apparent water damage. Thinking $400 might be on the high side unless there was something special about these and it's not looking like it. So, if the 'K' stands for a year does the # following indicate the production # of that year ??
  8. Looking at these H1's on CL. Owner says he bought them new & wants $400. Does the serial # tell any information about year of manufacture? Wondering if these had the metal or plastic horns? Are the plastic ones an H1.5? Still trying to get some driver pictures from owner. Also, is it odd that the serial #'s are 1 off? Thanks
  9. @Maz4bz Yes, very informative and interesting. Are you still using the -5db L pads with the Crites Ti's? Thanks again.
  10. Have the BEC X/O's & Titanium Diaphrams on order for these. Are there any recommended cabinet mods? With my Polks, Gluing the Magnet Assemblies to prevent Magnet Shift was suggested. Installing Dynamat Extreme on the stamped steel Woofer and Passive Radiator Basket Frames to minimize resonances and ringing, installing Hurricane Nuts and Machine or Cap Screws in place of the existing Philips Head Sheet Metal Screws Polk used, to torque down all the drivers to prevent vibrations and resonances, Re-Positioning the internal Dacron Batting for Best Performance, Installing Blackhole 5, Sonic Barrier, or No-Rez behind the woofers for improved midrange clarity and imaging, Installing new gaskets if needed for an air-tight seal, re-sealing the cabinet internally if needed. How much of this would be of benefit to the KG-4's? I see additional cabinet bracing recommended for some of the 'Heritage' series, any other models need it? Thanks
  11. Just bought a pair in almost as nice shape, except in the Oak finish. Owner wanted $500, I paid $300. I'm at the other end of the continent (Alaska) but seems your asking price is reasonable. Wish you success and hope you will be upgrading and not leaving the Klipsch family all together.
  12. @carlthess40 Thanks for that. Good idea.
  13. HAHAHA... Thank you gentlemen. What an idiot I am. I didn't realize that the 2 wire & 3 wire I.E.C. cord ends were the same dimensions. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I've got a couple extra heavy duty 3 wire I.E.C. cords from Tripp-Lite I can use. They don't fit real tite though. Kind of loose. Hmmm.
  14. So, turned on the HT yesterday and discovered the total absence of low end. The Italian Greyhound puppy has decided he doesn't like the low frequencies. This was his solution. Surprised he's still alive. My RW12 uses a 3 wire "D" plug but this RW8 is a 2 wire. Anyway, having trouble finding a 2 wire "D" plug replacement. Where might I find these? Found them 'used' on ebay but want new. Thanks
  15. I too ordered this exact same cloth and talked to them prior to purchasing, In 123stitch's defense, they said that this particular cloth comes shipped to them already folded and that a careful ironing or steaming should take the wrinkles out. Cannot hear any sonic difference between this 18 count lambswool and the factory speaker grill cloth. There is a slight difference between grill on and off obviously.
  16. @tromprof & @Opus That's pretty much the answer I was hoping for. Have either of you upgraded the x/o's or gone with the Titanium diaphrams? @Emile Your advice on these KG4's was the main reason I went ahead and got them along with the KG1's. All of which I am very pleased with. I am listening mainly to the KG1's sitting on top of the KG4's along with a 10" Klipsch sub, at that elevation those KG1's really come alive when given a little wattage. Much bigger sound stage than their size would imply. I don't use the sub with the KG4's, prefer them alone. The Titanium diaphrams aren't that expensive so guess I should go ahead and try them this winter when the upgraded x/o's are installed. Can always go back to the originals. Also, was trying to find any threads on tweeking or strengthening the KG4's cabinet while I've got them apart. Is there any recommendations on these cabinets that might help with resonance etc.? Thanks all.
  17. Didn't want to tag onto the similar thread regarding elevating Heresy's. I realize Heresy's & KG4's are completely different beasts with the KG4's PR and Heresy's 3way & mid/high horns. I haven't yet progressed to owning a true Heritage series but it will happen when the opportunity arises. These KG4's came available first at a reasonable price so they are what I'm dealing with now. I find them to have a surprising presence & forwardness that I didn't expect to hear without the mid horn. Bass is quite adequate for my preference. Will have Bob Crites go over the x/o's in the near future but am unsure if the Titanium diaphrams will be to my liking or not. Anyway, back to the subject at hand. The KG's have the 2" (+/-) factory riser but I still angled them up 5-6 degrees with a healthy toe in to the listening position. I still find myself sitting lower & lower down to really get the full range of sound (mainly upper mids & highs). So again, will raising these on stands, solid blocks or an end table effectively change the low end performance with the PR's? These KG4's are my first experience with rear mounted PR's as my Polks have front mounted PR's and aren't quite as position sensitive or are sealed like my Monitor7c's . Does anyone raise their Forte's off the floor. Other than my Polk SDA2a's, I find most of the vintage type floor standing speakers too low for my ears in a standard listening position. Thanks
  18. Been listening to these KG-1's for a couple of days now. Have them sitting on top of my Polk SDA2a's which puts the tweeters about 48.5" up. Knew they would be shy in Bass so I've got my RW8 set @ 60 hz. Powered with a Carver M200t & C2 pre. Got to say, very impressive as a bookshelf speaker with great (IMO) mids and adequate highs. The K83 tweet seems to lack the forwardness of a true Klipsch horn. It needs elevation and some supportive low end bass but very pleasant to listen to for extended periods of time. And it can crank! Actually comes alive much more in the upper range at higher volumes. Will send one pair of the X/O's off to Mr. Crites for upgrade and install the Titanium diaphrams. Then can A/B the upgraded to the original. Picked up the KG-4's for $300 and like them too so far. Have them tilted 5-6 degrees and angled in to the listening position. Bass is surprising as is imaging. Noticed that they really need some elevation too. The lower I sit, the better they sound. Were risers, other than the factory installed ones recommended for the KG-4's? Also, whats recommended to preserve the paper tags on the back? Clear tape or something else? All pairs seem to be consecutive but 1 set of the KG-1's is missing and I'd like to save the remaining stapled on labels. Thanks
  19. So you guys are the other two. Is there a membership for this club? Thought it was pretty exclusive. šŸ˜
  20. P.S. Assume the 'Golden Oak' Restor a Finish would be the proper choice for the oiled oak?
  21. Thanks @jimjimbo Furniture finishing / maintenance is way out of my realm of expertise. Trying to 'pretty' all these KG's up as much as possible for a better WAF. She much prefers the walnut finish to more closely match existing furniture. She also hates anything that would attract or collect dust so good to know about the Feed n Wax. Have the Polk SDA 2a's out now and they are an untouched faux rosewood vinyl. Loving these real oak KG's myself but life (marriage) is a compromise. Then on to the important internal upgrades. Thanks again for your valuable experience.
  22. @jimjimbo Would I want to use Howard's Feed n Wax after the Restor a Finish?
  23. Coming home with 4- KG1's & 2- KG4's. All appear to be oiled oak finish, at least that's what I believe the Kg4's are. Assuming the KG1's are too since they were in the same series ???? Trying to find a thread for refreshing the cabinets not refinishing yet. Couple scratches, water stains, little fading & basic age issues. These will be going into a much dryer climate so need to give the cabinets as much chance for survival as I can. Would have preferred the walnut finish but beggars can't be choosers. Consider myself fortunate to have found all these with similar finish from different sellers in the same city on the same trip. Anyway, I know there's lot's of threads regarding which oil or product to use or not use. Trying to wade through all that to get to the basics. Any links to a good thread or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
  24. Sorry, couldn't upload the spec page as a jpeg for some reason. Specs say the K83 tweet is ferro-fluid filled. That's what I was going by.
