  1. Recieved 402’s today for MEH project, but you gotta hear them right away, right? Disconnected the 4592 mids and hooked up K691’s to just hear these horns.  Expectation/confirmation bias has to really be controlled due to all the hype these horns get.  They quite a piece of gear though!

The only way to accurately describe it is that they get you closer to the sound of headphones.  More intimate? More enveloping? More present? More dynamic?
I’m it’s me most “sensorial” experience I’ve had with these Cornwalls, (all that’s left of the Cornwalls is the cabinet and grills at this point)

im a little embarrassed I spent this much money on horns, and I know they are out of a lot of people’s reach, but I just wanted to confirm that if you are wondering if they “really” make a difference...they did for my system.

Now to turn them into MEH...

  2. Older thread but hope people will respond.
Super basic question about the digital to analog signal chain.

is the common method for a digital source go Streamer...Dac...preamp...Xilica...amp...driver?

so it’s digital to analog back to digital, back again to analog.

Just checking that this is the signal path for digital sources.  Or do people eliminate the preamp and stay digital as long as possible?

    thanks, Ted

  3. From what I’ve read in several places, the F3 sounds like a stand out.  I’ll be looking for one from now on.  I notice the F3, J2, and F8 are all jfets.  That may be too simplistic of a connection on my part.

Anybody have experience with the F8? Supposedly a “updated J2” according to NP.

  4. I think a First Watt thread is a great idea for Klipsch forum.  I have a Pass labs xa 25 and I’d love to learn peoples impressions of First Watt.  I’d love to try one.

The 402s sound Ok with my D75s. Really when you get the 402s dailed in with the Xilica the 402s sound so wonderful (to my ears) that just about any amp will do. I know some will say i"m nuts. But hey I'm also old so there is that also. Next I will be modding the D75s to be transconductance amps and see what that does.

I’m not being sarcastic, but wondering about Crown. Seems like a lot of people on the forum like them, maybe that’s my answer, but do they compare, especially on a k402, with mid priced class A or tubes? Does an active XO 402 neutralize amps and minimize differences?  I do love the idea of spending $500 on a new amp. I just thought Crown priorities were power and reliability, sound quality third.

  6. Didn’t want to start a new thread, so I’m going slightly off topic. Anybody have any amp matching advice with a K402 MEH? Thinking Crown, class D xls 1502 or class AB k1.

probably my class A Pass xa25 for mids.
Any problem sonically, or otherwise, mixing A and D in K402 MEH horn? Or just go K1?

    any other amp advice? Thanks

Yeah ... K1 here with a similar damping factor. Dramatic difference with my previous amp :)

Either of you using the Crowns with passive XO?  I’m sure the bass is solid and plentiful, how’s mids? Any harshness,, edginess? Any comparisons to a class A amp in same system? Paired with tube preamp? Thanks

  8. One thing I was wondering. Since Cornwalls are bass reflex lower end, would a horn woofer still be significantly better than “standard” sub, (Rel, Rythmik are on my list). Having horn subs 20-60hz, then bass reflex 50-450hz, then horns above that.  Would the bass seem “disjointed, less cohesive”. Am I overthinking this?

Well in my opinion, for that to work with the Cornwalls, the sub would have to be no more than 1-2" high.

With the risers, they are the perfect height for my listening position. If you had a higher chair than mine, you might be able to raise them a few inches more. Putting them on top of a subwoofer enclosure would totally skew the tonal balance of the speaker.

Hey, it's not like we are talking about a bass shy speaker in the first place. In a non home theater setting, most would be more than happy with the bass output.

I have (modified) Cornwall’s 6” off the floor on raised platforms, I much prefer them at this height.  Otherwise my mid driver is approximately 28” off the floor, which seems pretty low.  I have them in corners, can’t hear any loss of bass on the platforms.
As far as bass goes I’m on the fence about adding subs.  I’d like to get to 30 hz, and people always says it does more than just lowering bass....certainly not a “bass shy” speaker as @Shakeydeal said.

    Hi VDS,

I've kinda let speaker processing become as much of a hobby as speaker building.

And have used a number of different platforms from simple analog crossovers, to much of  the miniDSP stuff, to fixed prosound platforms like the Xilica XP & XD, to open architecture platforms like the Xilica Neutrino.  Don't claim to be an expert at all, just saying I've been able to compare a number of alternatives.

My 2c advice for starting out with active, is that initially leaning is worth far more than the "right" equipment. So I always recommend starting with something inexpensive like the $200 miniDSP 2x4HD. It's quite decent, other than limited in channel count and processing capability.

When you outgrow it (as you most likely will :)), you'll better know what you want and why....without feeling locked into a more substantial purchase, that may or may not have fully filled your needs and wants.

Good luck whatever way you go !

I went ahead and got the Xilica. Basically people said the software was as easy as mini Dsp and I shouldn’t have to upgrade from it.  I feel like getting the most out of it will be a long process, I imagine lots of tweaking.  I also want d to play with my Cornwalls to see if I can improve on the he passives, so I thought having extra outputs  would enable me to try on my 3 ways.

  11. Basic question....If, for some reason, I wanted to add subwoofer to this 2 way system someday, would it be acceptable to hook up subwoofer in traditional manner, or significantly better to have 6 Dsp outputs to control the sub(s)?

or can I just implement a mini 2x4 separately  for the subs if need be.

I'm clearly showcasing my lack or understanding here, buts that’s where I am

  12. Hi, I’m starting the move to active crossovers. Wondering about the diffence between MiniDSP and Xilica.  From all reports both seem to work great, how about the difference in “User friendliness”?

For “software illiterate” audiophiles, myself, is one a better starting point than the other to get things up and running? Does Mini Dsp have enough functionality to be a long term solution?

My use is a 402 MEH 2 way that I will start soon.

    thanks for any perspectives, Ted

  13. @rickmcinnis, just to super simplify things, looking at you pic.  You have a 402, mounted vertically, 2 Crites woofers mounted on the horn sides, I see the woofer inlet holes, as @Chris A did.  With a “built in” Rythmik sub below? I might have missed it, but how low does the MEH go w/o the sub?
Im wondering if the vertical orientation is creating ceiling reflection or horizontal coverage problems? (As opposed to horizontal orientation?)

    thanks, Ted

  14. I know I’m opting myself up to abuse...but here goes.
Cornwall 1’s, previously switched horns to a Dave Harris 400hz eliptical with BSM 4592 (Mid only) Dave A Mahl tweeter horn w/ Dcm10(?) driver, internal bracing. Alk crossovers, 500/5800hz

I recently saw saw a showing inside of CW4 showing damping on 1 side and top only, bracing front to back.
Added 2x4’s front to back as CW4, added damping to 1 side and top, removed from back and other side, and moved back out 3” to make up volume lost to larger horn and bracing, currently 7.9 cu ft total inside.

still have to measure, but I feel the bass tighter, less resonant, (which was always a complaint of mine) bass now is still big and full, but not boomy and resonant.

Some of these changes were reckless and uninformed, I know, no need to point it out, but the sound is quantum leaps above the CW1’s I bought 1 year ago! Wish I could compare to CW4’s for the hell of it.

Now moving to attempting a 2 way, active. Debating between MEH with K402’s or K402 with bass bin.
