  1. Must have good eyes and do not sneeze for those diy'ers playing with those things. Wave of the future for sure. My last phono preamp was all surface mount.
  2. Spent some time in my woodworking shop yesterday making some progress on the wood chassis. Also ordered parts and tube for this build at Tubedepot. Some of this wood has been exposed to the sun in wood storage area in my garage and has already taken on the nice cherry wood color. After applying some oil and more exposure to light the color differences should blend together nicely. This chassis is taller and a little bit larger than the last build. The OPT's I have chosen will have to be installed under the chassis much like the last build and they are larger. Also need the extra room for the choke in the PS section to be installed underneath as well.
  3. Perhaps a technical salesman member? That is what my son is with a encryption software company as part of the sales team.
  4. I hope not. The new member seemed to be a good guy with some really cool equipment and Captain is a very knowledgeable guy when it comes to electronics. I would like to think they can make amends and contribute to the forum again. The new guy started the thread and started talking about cables and Captain just disagreed with what he was saying. I think the proper thing for Captain to have done is start his own thread on the subject instead of what happened. I hope to see both back on after what appears to be a cooling off period for both of them.
  5. Listen to what Klipsch is saying guys if you want this place to stay. A lot said in a few words. From the mouth of Klipsch! WE get SO TIRED of the SAME thing OVER AND OVER...."we know better than a 75y old co. and the trained engineers that design the product, Do this to your speaker and hear it get better" Go build your own damn speaker company and leave ours alone.
  6. I would hate to see this forum come to an end. I believe it is still savable. Do not let a few bad apples spoil the whole barrel. It has been up a very long time. I have been coming here listening for too many years to remember how long. I think it just needs guided in the right direction of which I can see it happening already. With the right leadership I can see this place being a good place to learn of Klipsch and their products. When the focus is not on Klipsch and promotion of their products I can see why Klipsch has been discussing taking the site down. Guys we need to get with the program or just quietly move on and quit complaining. Check the number of visitors coming to this site Trey and you will see many, many more visitors than the ones always posting. I believe this website can be very beneficial to Klipsch. As I said on Roy's thread he or someone like him has a big megaphone here if they just use it and reach a lot of potential customers who will purchase their products. Called word of mouth advertisement for just the cost of maintaining the site. Cheap these day with the cost of advertising being so high.
  7. Did not get any work done on this project yesterday. My granddaughter was visiting and my GF and I were busy enjoying her company and keeping her entertained. I did get my new, for me, old Marshall EL-34 tubes I bought on Ebay and installed them in my working amplifier I am going to rebuild. Before putting them in I listened to 2 songs of an album with my Gold Lion KT-77's first where I could do somewhat of a comparison. To my ears the sound was very similar with maybe a touch better bass. Mids and vocals were pretty much the same. I am happy with the purchase of the Marshall tubes. I paid $45 for the pair as tested excellent by the seller. I am going to build this amplifier around those tubes. The were made by a Russian company called Svetlana who made tubes for Russians for many years. Old company who had a good reputation making tubes. I am going to assume that USA or western European tubes were not available to the people or Russia. Russia still used tube electronic gear long after the USA started using SS gear. Marshall using them in their guitar amplifiers says a lot.
  8. Good question. I believe in such cases such will be permitted if component is not available from Klipsch. With vintage electronics unobtainable active parts is a common problem but someone that understands the data sheet of the part can likely find a replacement that works as good or better. With Klipsch speakers one should check with Klipsch for the original part first. At least I would think so. You will find other parts that will work but then it would not be Klipsch. My thinking is the boss wants to keep this forum, when it comes to speakers, Klipsch talk.
  9. I had an old friend who was a welder who worked on an atomic plant in Alabama who said to get the job you had to pass a welding test much the same as you describe at your plant. That kind of welding is a 3 step process. To get the job, have to be certified as a welder first of course, is weld two pieces of plate steel together and then the welded plate is applied pressure to see at what pressure it fails. If I remember correct the weld is first x-rayed as well. If your work passes the test you get the job.
  10. I think the boss, and yes there is a boss of this forum, is saying "My way or the highway." I do not know who it is. Probably someone high up on the food chain. The post by members seen on this forum is just a small part of the many visitors that visit this site everyday. Boss wants this site cleaned up and flying straight with the emphasis on Klipsch. Does not want visitors coming here just to see two grown men arguing about who is right and who is wrong about some silly topic. That and wants more Klipsch talk. His forum his rules or find some other playground. I like this forum having owned my LaScala's for 36 years. I found about the Klipsch sound many years ago and it is still my favorite speaker.
  11. I should have started this thread by saying this is a well documented design where a complete build guide and parts list is available. http://tubelab.com/designs/tubelab-sse/ Hundreds if not a thousand or more have been built on diyaudio by members there. I built mine I'm guessing 6 or more years ago. George Anderson of Tubelab is a well respected information source on tube design and info.
  12. Just sounds like a new sheriff in town to me. This is a Klipsch forum and whoever is in charge wants talk about Klipsch. Not hard to understand really. I enjoyed seeing what the guy did with that Belle but he did chop up a Belle speaker. If I were part of Klipsch I would not like hearing about someone chopping up one of my speakers either. Even if he did do a really nice job. If you were part of Klipsch how would you run this forum? Remember this forum is only here to promote Klipsch products and sales. That simple really. If it does not do that why would Klipsch even keep it up and running?
  13. Me as well. Well not exactly, I use an active buffer with no gain. A tube pre with a tube amp is just too much of a good thing for me. I say it's your system use what pleases you in your house. You are the only one you have to please. It is really that simple.
  14. You know what you are doing and know you shorten the life of tubes running them more than say 80%. Many do not know this.
  15. I can say the same about some of my ex bosses. 🙂 Of course in a nice way as you have done. Have not heard much from you Trey. We could learn a lot from you as well as Roy on this thread. Do participate and share your audio knowledge with us.
  16. Not really sure about fixed versus cathode bias. Either one will work for me. If you take the time to redraw the schematic as stripped down I would appreciate it. I would like to see what you come up with for cathode bias as well. The ST-70 amp has many more circuits and options that I do not care about. At the time it was introduced many of those options were standard on an amplifier. Not so much anymore. I only want my PP amplifier to be the amplifier part. I see this as a project in the future for me since I already have the expensive parts of a build. I paid like $300 for this amplifier on Ebay a few years ago. Worth much more than that in tubes and iron alone. All original tubes from what I can tell. All test excellent as well.
  17. That is the year I bought my speakers! Guys 36 years is a long time to be employed at a company. He must be doing something right to draw a paycheck from Klipsch that long, you would think. Klipsch is not some mom and pop speaker manufacturer. Some have said I am, excuse the redneck way of saying this, kissing his ***. I do not see it that way. I see it as he has not been given the credit he deserves. He is a present day giant in horn speaker design, Not meant to diminish PWK's legend in any way. PWK was his teacher and it appears he has learned his craft very well to have survived at Klipsch this long. I am just giving credit where credit belongs.
  18. I decided to buy some Hammond 125ESE's for this build. Bigger than the ones used in the Sweetie. They were 125DSE's. Order placed with Tubedepot this morning. Tubedepot has a very detailed data sheet for this transformer. Notice the chart at full power at 5,000K. Looks really good and that is at full power. Much better at the lower power level using Klipsch speakers. I bet they beat Edcor's spec sheet, that is if Edcor provided one which they do not. https://s3.amazonaws.com/tubedepot-com-production/spree/attached_files/125ESE.pdf?1659103176
  19. Using that tube pre on my SS amp made the sound much more like a SET tube amplifier. What can I say, I like tubes.
  20. PWK in Roy's video with Guttenburg called it the fudge factor. He asked Roy do you want a horn designed only with the math or one that sounds good. Or something to that effect.
  21. For the last 2 nights I have been listening to my class A/B 150 watt SS amplifier. The first night just with a buffer pre only hearing the amp itself. Buffer contributes very little to the sound if any. Very quick and clinical sounding. The sound many enjoy and prefer but just not my favorite form of sound. The amplifier was built by myself and it uses all the good circuits a well designed SS A/B amplifier should have. Last night I decided the sound needed some tube flavor and added and installed a 12AU7 tube preamplifier designed by Maynard into the mix and it became my favorite kind of sound then. Without some 2nd harmonics the kind of music I enjoy just does not have as pleasant sound to my ears. Especially when it comes to vocals. This is a trick anyone can do with their SS PP amplifier. Install a good tube preamp and take a listen.
  22. Just curious, has anyone called the owner about some of his Klipsch speakers? Says he has many more in his warehouse.
  23. That thread that was deleted had deteriorated into a lot of mud slinging and name calling. Not something I care to see on any forum. It had a lot of views being men have a tendency to congregate when a fight happens. Much the same on that thread but a verbal fight. There has always been too much of that happening for too many years on this forum and it should stop. We should all tolerate and respect each other and their view points and not get into that kind of Jr. High feuds. As your mother said "behave yourself when in public." Feuds happen when one does not allow the other one to have the last word. Get over it and move on. Who really cares that much of how thick a cable wire has to be. Thick as your big finger? If someone says they can hear the difference using such, good for him. It is your money spend it exactly how you want to. It was all just silly to me, that conversation. I have my opinion but did not join in the conversation not to offend either one of the parties involved. Sometime more can be said by saying less. There is talk of some moving to the diyaudio forum. Been a member there for many years and I can tell you they do not allow verbal fights there. They will be quickly dealt with on that forum. This is a Klipsch forum and the talk and discussions should center on and around Klipsch and their products. There is a thread now talking about someone taking a Belle speaker and turning it into a 2 way speaker with one of those $1,000 drivers. I find that interesting and not something that conflicts with the theme of this forum. Just use common sense and let Klipsch be the main focus on this site. Just the way I see it being a relatively new member here. I have lurked for many, many years having owned my LaScala's since '86. Just did not take the time to participate until recently. Being an electronic geek I gravitated to the more technical forums. Just the way I see that deleted thread which agrees with the mod who deleted it as well.
  24. Does anyone know how long Roy has been working for Klipsch? It has to be 25 or more years since PWK has been dead for 20 years and was 98 when he died. PWK taught him his craft so it has to be 25 to 30 years or longer. I would say he has built his own legacy by now or Klipsch would have not kept him.
