  1. Why wait around? You can get a Tumult-based doomsday sub right now for a couple grand from Acoustic Visions. The Denali (one 15" Tumult driver & two 18" PRs) is available for less than $2000. The Everest (two Tumults and FOUR 18" PRs) is around double that amount I think.... I had them build me a Denali (minus the 1000 watt Keiga plate amp) and supplied my own 1400 watt pro amplifier. Just a single Denali goes damn well with K-horns, & is just what the doctor ordered for my bass jones...
  2. Klipsch does not need to make a sub to keep up with K-horns. It sure would be nice if they did, but Acoustic Visions already is...
  3. Problem I'm having is that at the volumes I sometimes listen to,(and with the appropriate amount of bass I require), those K-horn midranges are going to make my ears bleed. I wondering if maybe Al K's x-overs might be of some use in taming those mids at higher volumes? It's been suggested previously that I get some subwoofers so as not to drive the K-horns quite so hard. I have already got some subwoofage(KSW-15)and am putting together an amp/preamp to drive a couple SVSs in the near future. But by God I didn't get K-horns to play them like a sissy...I could have gotten any number of speakers that I could do that with. But on the other hand I don't want to impair my hearing any more than it already is. Has anybody out there ever replaced AK-3 crossovers in their K-horns with the Al Klappenberg x-overs, and if so, how'd they sound compared to AK-3s? Klipsch tech support told me that replacing the AK-3s wouldn't get me all that much overall improvement, but that if I had an "earlier model" crossover it might be worth it... ------------------ 32" Hi-scan Sony WEGA Amp: Yamaha DSP-A1 Mains: '99 K-horns Center: KLF-C7 & JBL S- Center Front Effects: KSP-S6s Rear Surrounds: KLF-30s Sub: KSW-15 DVD: Pioneer DVD-414 MD: Sony Mini-Disc Recorder (Walkman) VCR: JVC S-VHSby God This message has been edited by jstanton on 09-25-2002 at 11:44 AM

  5. I'm using a KLF-C7 as a center for my K-Horns. After finding out that the C7 is not an ideal match for K-Horns from this forum, and not wanting to get rid of the C-7 (it's a fine speaker), I decided to run an extra center channel speaker (my amplifier allows the use of 2 centers). So the C7 sits atop the TV and I have a JBL S-center on the floor in front of the TV, angled up. Well, the "soundstage" improved for the center channel (it's wider), and the difference in the timbre between the K-horns and C7 seems to me less noticeable and pretty much inconsequential now. And anyway, even though the KLF-C7 does not match the K-horns, it DOES match my KLF-30 surrounds...better that than nothing I suppose... This was a "cheap fix" for me, & it sounds good as far as I'm concerned. I mean, exactly how "bad" can K-horns with a C7 actually sound? I think I can live with this "incongruity" now, especially considering the cost and trouble of suggested alternatives (e.g., getting another Heritage as center). ------------------ 32" Hi-scan Sony WEGA Amp: Yamaha DSP-A1 Mains: '99 K-horns Center: KLF-C7 & JBL S- Center Front Effects: KSP-S6s Rear Surrounds: KLF-30s Sub: KSW-15 DVD: Pioneer DVD-414 MD: Sony Mini-Disc Recorder (Walkman) VCR: JVC S-VHS This message has been edited by jstanton on 09-16-2002 at 12:01 PM
  6. Malcolm & BBB: Thanks much for the answers to my querys. I suspected the 8 ohm setting was referring to the "nominal" impedance of the speakers (after all, probably 90% or better of owners aren't hip to the fact that their 8 ohm speakers dip below that nominal rating in actual use, e.g., until just recently I did not know that). I just was not sure about that little nuance... And BBB, I think you're quite right about the lack of DD-EX/DTS-ES DVDs not justifying the expense of a new decoder...I think that money would be better spent on other things. Like an SVS subwoofer, for instance. After all, one can ALWAYS use more bass...more bangs for the bucks. ------------------ 32" Hi-scan Sony WEGA Amp: Yamaha DSP-A1 Mains: '99 K-horns Center: KLF-C7 & JBL S- Center Front Effects: KSP-S6s Rear Surrounds: KLF-30s Sub: KSW-15 DVD: Pioneer DVD-414 MD: Sony Mini-Disc Recorder (Walkman) VCR: JVC S-VHS
  7. To anyone knowledgable about amplifier impedance selector settings: I've been running K-Horns, KLF-30s, a KLF-C7, & KSP-S6s with a Yamaha DSP-A1. There's an impedance selector switch on the back of the amp for which you have two options: "impedance of each speaker must be 4 ohms or higher" or "impedance of each speaker must be 8 ohms or higher". I've been running my Klipsch's on the 8 ohm setting. Is this correct? I believe that all of the speakers I'm using have a nominal rating of 8 ohms(somebody correct me if I'm wrong). However, the way I understand it, that "8 ohm" rating is just an average that the speaker presents to the amplifier, and in actual use this impedance may vary quite a bit. So if the speakers do actually dip below 8 ohms, wouldn't the proper setting for the amp actually be "4 ohm or higher" as opposed to 8 ohms or higher? Also would be interested to know if anyone else out there is using a DSP-A1 to drive Klipsch speakers, as I'm curious as to whether this amp is compatible with DVD-Audio, SACD, and whether or not an additional processor could be added for those new-fangled DD-EX/DTS-ES formats... ------------------ 32" Hi-scan Sony WEGA Amp: Yamaha DSP-A1 Mains: '99 K-horns Center: KLF-C7 & JBL S- Center Front Effects: KSP-S6s Rear Surrounds: KLF-30s Sub: KSW-15 DVD: Pioneer DV-414 MD: Sony Mini-Disc Recorder (Walkman) VCR: JVC S-VHS This message has been edited by jstanton on 09-14-2002 at 03:27 PM

  9. I got a pair of K-Horns that tends to vibrate the be-jesus out of the entire house when turned up to any decent listening level. Problem is, my DVD/CD player also vibrates in unison causing much skippage and whatnot. Can anyone recommend something for isolating audio components from vibrations (or what is commercially available for this sort of thing)? (I've been using foam rubber pieces which work somewhat, but after awhile they get compressed and don't work so well...) Thanks... ------------------ 32" Hi-scan Sony WEGA Amp: Yamaha DSPA1 Mains: '99 K-horns Center: KLF-C7 & JBL S- Center Front Effects: KSP-S6s Rear Surrounds: KLF-30s Sub: KSW-15 DVD: Pioneer DV-114 MD: Sony Mini-Disc Recorder (Walkman) VCR: JVC S-VHS
  10. I've got one of these things called a Clark TST (Tactile Sound Transducer) which I want to incorporate into my system. Not a subwoofer or speaker per sec, it's designed to be bolted to furniture or flooring to transmit vibrations via whatever they are hooked to. It's rated at 100W with 4 ohm load, and it needs a separate amplifier to drive it...(I can't just hook it up to my HT amp and be done with it). I tried running it with my girlfriends el-cheapo Technics surround sound amp (after hooking up the Technics amp to the "tape out" RCA jacks of the Yamaha DSP-A1). Well, it worked for a short while but the amp (the Technics) kept "overloading" and turning off. I think the Technics amp may be WAY underpowered as far as this application is concerned. I think what I need is a nice heavy no-frills power amp to drive this thing. Used would be preferable. Question is, where do I begin looking and for what precisely? Like a 100-200w stereo amp? Something that's bridgeable (since there's only one transducer, why get a two channel amp)? Since this TST is rated at 4 ohms, can a regular amp be used or do I need something different to handle the 4 ohm rated load? Would a monoblock amp work here? Any suggestions how to get this thing rigged? ------------------ 32" Hi-scan Sony WEGA Amp: Yamaha DSPA1 Mains: '99 K-horns Center: KLF-C7 & JBL S- Center Front Effects: KSP-S6s Rear Surrounds: KLF-30s Sub: KSW-15 DVD: Pioneer DV-114 MD: Sony Mini-Disc Recorder (Walkman) VCR: JVC S-VHS
  11. I can't tell you, but I've got a pair and would like to know also. For me it's kind of a moot point right now as I do not intend to demolish our rental home to accomodate the K-Horns, but it would be good to know for future reference. Mine are about 6-7 ft. out from center and pushed solidly into the corners. I figured that getting those bastards tightly into dedicated 90-degree corners was an accomplishment in and of itself... ------------------ 32" Hi-scan Sony WEGA Amp: Yamaha DSPA1 Mains: '99 K-horns Center: KLF-C7 & JBL S- Center Front Effects: KSP-S6s Rear Surrounds: KLF-30s Sub: KSW-15 DVD: Pioneer DV-114 MD: Sony Mini-Disc Recorder (Walkman) VCR: JVC S-VHS
  12. ...when the sound disables your vision and you literally cannot SEE straight....I put the new Rush CD on, cranked the Yamaha up 'bout halfway, and everything looked blurred.....either my eyeballs were vibrating or my brain/optic nerve and its associated synapses, I haven't figured out which yet... Another indicator of TOO LOUD is when your ears start ringing all the time. Which is what mine do (read: hearing damage). But they were ringing long before I got my K-Horns. I imagine the K-Horns will probably finish the job, though. For anyone else out there with irreversible hearing loss, ginko biloba is good for the ear ringing (tinnitus)...it attenuates it somewhat and most of time I never even notice it (unless I think about it). ------------------ 32" Hi-scan Sony WEGA Amp: Yamaha DSPA1 Mains: '99 K-horns Center: KLF-C7 & JBL S- Center Front Effects: KSP-S6s Rear Surrounds: KLF-30s Sub: KSW-15 DVD: Pioneer DV-114 MD: Sony Mini-Disc Recorder (Walkman) VCR: JVC S-VHS
  13. Hey Guys guess what I found when I got home last night? There was no power in the electrical outlets the system was plugged into, as well as to several other outlets in the house. What was weird was that resetting the breaker did not return power. In fact, the breaker wasn't even tripped... I reckon the landlord's gonna have to get the electrician out, but I guess this catastrophic loss of house AC current is pretty much consistent with there being some sort of electrical disturbance upstream from the amplifier (which for some reason didn't affect the amp but toasted the fuses in the K-Horns). Also, several days ago the TV (which is on the same line) turned off for no apparent reason. Hmmmm.... Will a Lowe's or Radio Shack power conditioner suffice for protection from this sort of electrical anomaly? Why are k-horns fused when most speakers aren't? Also, would anyone have any idea why the house current would not come back on after flipping the breaker? ------------------ 32" Hi-scan Sony WEGA Amp: Yamaha DSPA1 Mains: '99 K-horns Center: KLF-C7 & JBL S- Center Front Effects: KSP-S6s Rear Surrounds: KLF-30s Sub: KSW-15 DVD: Pioneer DV-114 MD: Sony Mini-Disc Recorder (Walkman) VCR: JVC S-VHS This message has been edited by jstanton on 08-03-2002 at 11:12 AM
  14. Hey Jasen: My Yamaha DSP-A1 is runnng KLF-30's for rear surrrounds, 2 Klipschorns for the mains, for center channel a C7 and a JBL S-center, KSP-S6s for front effects, and a KSW-15 and Yamaha YST-something-or other for subwoofers. I guess my C7 doesn't really match the K-horns, that's why I added the extra JBL S-Center in order to "fill in the holes", so to speak (the amp has the capability of running 2-center channels). The C7 sits on top of the TV and the JBL S-Center sits on the floor below the TV, angled up a bit. When the old lady is not around I like to crank the amp just to the point at which the eyeballs begin to twitch but not so much that they begin bleeding. ------------------ 32" Hi-scan Sony WEGA Amp: Yamaha DSPA1 Mains: '99 K-horns Center: KLF-C7 & JBL S- Center Front Effects: KSP-S6s Rear Surrounds: KLF-30s Sub: KSW-15 DVD: Pioneer DV-114 MD: Sony Mini-Disc Recorder (Walkman) VCR: JVC S-VHS This message has been edited by jstanton on 08-02-2002 at 03:23 PM
  15. Thanks for the info Gil. I get the point. I reckon I'll mosey on down to the local Radio Shack and rustle me up some connections to hook some fuses to my 12 gauge and the K-Horns. 16. I like Klipschs because for me they accurately reproduce the sound of LIVE music performances. Generally speaking, "other" speakers are good for making a relatively compromised "facsimile" of that same music. For reproducing rock music, I have never heard anything that even comes close to Klipsch. I think a lot of people are just used to listening to cruddy TV & radio speakers all their lives and have forgotten (or never knew in the first place) what real (live) music sounds like. Their speakers may sound "warmer" and all that nonsense, but they do not sound like live music. With Klipsch I can "feel" the music, to the extent that they make my eyes vibrate to the point that I literally can't see straight. In any case, this is precisely what I want in a speaker. ------------------ 32" Hi-scan Sony WEGA Amp: Yamaha DSPA1 Mains: '99 K-horns Center: KLF-C7 & JBL S- Center Front Effects: KSP-S6s Rear Surrounds: KLF-30s Sub: KSW-15 DVD: Pioneer DV-114 MD: Sony Mini-Disc Recorder (Walkman) VCR: JVC S-VHS
  17. Does anybody have any experience with bi-wiring K-Horns? I bi-wired mine a while back by having one set of speaker wires going to the woofer (the lower set of connecting posts on the K-Horn, through the supplied fuse) and ran a second set of wires from the amp DIRECTLY to the crossover, bypassing the jumper/fuse connection it would have normally had. Is this cool or should I put a fuse in line before the crossover for protection? ------------------ 32" Hi-scan Sony WEGA Amp: Yamaha DSPA1 Mains: '99 K-horns Center: KLF-C7 & JBL S- Center Front Effects: KSP-S6s Rear Surrounds: KLF-30s Sub: KSW-15 DVD: Pioneer DV-114 MD: Sony Mini-Disc Recorder (Walkman) VCR: JVC S-VHS
  18. Hey Lynn: Well, after extensive testing I could not duplicate the fuse blowing episode in my K-horns I described yesterday. Last night I pushed the system well past the point I had had it at and for a relatively extended period of time. So whatever caused the fuses to blow previously, it seems to me like it wasn't dependent on the playing level or it would most likely have done it again. What I am hoping is that it was just some transitory effect (?). However, this little episode is bringing up another question. I have the K-horns bi-wired. The way they are bi-wired, the second set of fuses (for the tweeter & midrange) are now by-passed, leaving them "unprotected". So when I blew the fuses the other night it was actually the woofer which blew: the tweeter and midrange kept working. Is it a good idea to have the tweeter/midrange unprotected like that? Hopefully the woofer was protected, but the tweeter/midrange definitely were/are not. Any ideas/comments/suggestions? ------------------ 32" Hi-scan Sony Amp: Yamaha DSPA1 Mains: '99 K-horns Center: KLF-C7 Front Effects: KSP-S6s Rear Surrounds: KLF-30s Sub: KSW-15 DVD: Pioneer DV-114 MD: Sony Mini-Disc Recorder (Walkman) VCR: vc-what? what difference does it make??
  19. Hey Lynn: Yes I was playng a bit with the tone controls at the time while playing The Who Live at Leeds, "Heaven & Hell" at the time. I was attempting to push the volume towards live concert levels at the time, but I've played that loud a lot longer than that before though and not had any problem. I just got off the phone with Klipsch Tech Support in Indianapolis and the guy I talked to said he didn't know what to tell me, that it could be too many things, and just to replace the fuse. Had nothing whatsover to suggest besides that. Do I just wait and see if the fuse blowing continues and watch for plumes of smoke or wait for something to fail catastrophically? Thanks ------------------ 32" Hi-scan Sony Amp: Yamaha DSPA1 Mains: '99 K-horns Center: KLF-C7 Front Effects: KSP-S6s Rear Surrounds: KLF-30s Sub: KSW-15 DVD: Pioneer DV-114 MD: Sony Mini-Disc Recorder (Walkman) VCR: vc-what? what difference does it make??
  20. Last night my K-horns both blew their fuses at the same time. Replaced them and they did it again after a few minutes. I checked the wiring to the amp (Yamaha DSP-A1), jiggled all the connections and made sure there weren't any loose strands shorting to the wrong post or anything like that. Replaced the fuses again and watched a movie thru the amp with no further problem. However I'm afraid that if I turn them up to the level I had them when they blew before (I was listening to some fairly loud music), they'll blow again. Any ideas what might be causing them to burn fuses? I've had them for several years now and this is the first time this has happened... 22. Howdy fellow Klipschers. I am new to this forum and have some questions regarding Klipsch speakers being used for home theater how to properly adjust the parametric equalization settings on a Yamaha DSP-A1 for them. On the DSP-A1 Cinema EQ one can use default settings OR two different equalizers to adjust (which can be turned on or off for L/R, Rear, or Effects section of the amp). Just don't know which way to adjust them... Anyone familiar with the Yamaha Cinema EQ and how to set it? Is the purpose just to take some of the high frequencies out of the sound for movies? Any help would be appreciated. Thx, J.
