  1. At "6 x modules = 990 lbs" would someone like to haul these downstairs for me before they fall through the floor? Better yet, run them upstairs to my junk/storage room while I save up for the amp's.
  2. What a great thread. Yesterday I found a used MoFi Fleetwood Mac Lp that got me to thinking of all the different versions of "Landslide". Which reminded me of this thread. Add the Dixie Chicks to the list. After seeing the previous post, add Patricia Barber. A bunch of CCR's Next on my list to aquire is Zeppelin titles on vinyl. What a fun hobby

Rest in peace, SRV. ~shoe ---------------- You beat me to it but I can still second SRV. Also, I never concidered myself a Sinatra fan, but somehow I have aquired quite a few of his recordings. Oh, and about anything mastered by Mofi, or Steve Hoffman.

The quality of the sonics won't do it; it will take miniaturization to topple the CD. Take it easy on me, please. ---------------- I hope your wrong. I would love to see Hi Rez make it in either form. The worst case would be to have a new smaller format with reduced resolution take off. Ugh. Imagine what would happen to the LP market if that happened. What might make it go is the "gimmick" of Multichannel. A lot of home stereos and/or people just can't hear the difference, or don't care to hear the difference so why spend the money. But if they could be sold MC they might bite. I don't mind MC as long as there is a two channel (not folded down) Hi-Rez layer.
  5. SACD Sony 650 because SACD was the first to come out with titles that I wanted and the fear being forced into the surround mode on DVD-A. Two channel sounds best in my setup and I don't have a way to change that in the near future. My center is currently set up off center do to room restrictions and that ruins the surround effects of MC playback for me. That makes the imaging and soundstage of two channel work better for me. I'm not real happy with the Sony 650. It does have some good sound, and for the price was a good entry/trial but the DAC in my pre-amp blows the 650 away for CD playback. The 650 has a softer more reserved sound which I like, but limited soundstage. I'm hoping to be looking for a new universal player soon. I've also been eyeing that Pioneer 45 or 47, and the Merantz 8300(?) that Sound and Vision reviewed without describing how it sounds. I'm hoping for an actual review of it rather than a two page add by some publisher on how it looks and how heavy it is. Maybe by February there will be more universal players to try out.
  6. Freaky! Grabbed the ELO, Out of the Blue, that I picked up yesterday for a buck. Started with Side three, just happened to be on top. Sat down this morning with my coffee to catch up on my forum reading with ELO playing in the background and I hit this thread. Just to weird.
  7. Thought I saw someone on here recently mention that he was selling Quartet's. My first reaction was, "this would great. If I could just get someone to split them with me to use as a center". But then again, I know my wife will not go for it at this time, so no sense asking. Other than another Forte for the center, I was thinking of a Quartet. Same as the Forte, but smaller. For me, maybe next year, but I think that would be a perfect match for the center.

Therefore, to increase by 3dbs from your current amp, you would need to double your wattage to 128 (64*2). I think the more important question is, at what point does law of deminishing returns meet your desires, and your wallet? 64 watts, 128 watts, 256 watts,...,1024 watts, etc? Some will say that 110dbs is the minimum. It depends on what works for you. Personally I do most of my listing around 72dbs, and sometimes push it to 85. I have only hit 100+ dbs out of curiosity. So it's all up to you, and what you prefer.

Other than the space saving benefit of having one box, what are the benefits of these high-end receivers over two boxes in this range by Rotel, Adcom, Outlaw, etc.? ---------------- At this price range you will kick yourself if you go integrated. Trust me. I did this with the Denon 4802. It lasted less than three months before I had to get rid of it. If seperates is in your budget, then don't even bother with integrated.
  10. The new version of the Anthem should be available by now. You might have to look around for it as dealers get rid of their older stock. My pre was only 40 units away from only requiring a software upgrade. Go to Sonic Frontiers web site. They list the serial numbers that require upgrading the hardware. You might be able to get one that has the new hardware installed then you only need to update the software. I've talked to my local dealer about the upgrade and they made it sound like Sonic Frontiers wants to make the changes themselves for now, so my dealer is not offering to do the upgrade yet.
  11. Me, I'm left milling around on my own until I look like I'm about to break something!! That is hilarious. I'll have to try that after Christmas.
  12. I'm surprised that this thread hasn't filled up yet with everyone's recommendations. I'm currently using a mix of: Zu Cable Oxyfuels for surrounds and sub. Zu Cable Warmouths for mains, and AQ Corals for phono stage. The Zu Cables can be had for fair price, new from the company on Ebay. That's where I got mine. Not bad getting a silver interconnect for $125 a pair. I don't have much experience with boutique cables, but these were a huge improvement over my cheesy generic interconnects. The bass became much more defined. I've been using them for a couple of months with no regrets. Next month I plan on switching the AQ's around to decide if I want to keep them. Have to get used to the new cart first.
  13. Skip the Denons. I agree with Marksdad. I used to own the 4802 and it honestly hurt my ears when paired with my Forte's. Add a bright recording like Santan'a Abraxis on DTS Entertainment's 5.1 and my wife was even complaining from another room. I went seperates and will never go back. But, if you have to go with integrated I would still skip the Denon's and look elsewhere.
  14. Why would someone do this? Anyone else ever seen this mod? Forte's have great base. I just can't see a need to ruin them this way. I'm dumbfounded. Let's hope he at least hooked it up out of phase, but the air volume matching would still probably be way off. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=800008255
  15. I've never listened to the HK, but here's my thoughts on the 4802. I owned the Denon AVR-4802 for a couple of months before I went to my current setup. Given my experience with it, I'd give the HK a try. The Denon was so bright on my Forte II's that it physically made my ears hurt to listen for more than an hour. The amp produced very little bass. As a side note, most of my listening is done at about 75db, plus or minus five. The Denon had all of the cool bells and whistles, but in the end my ears couldn't handle it.
  16. Glad to hear that everything worked out so well. 4-5 weeks of warranty work is better than having to hunt for new equip, and a lot cheaper. And yep, they do make preset volume controls. The Anthem that I'm using has it, and I like it for more than kid proofing. It's a nice re-assurance that whenever it comes on. It's adjustable and set to -46. Also has an adjustable max limiter that keeps it from mysteriously creeping up after I've had a few to many to late at night. Funny how the volume tends to increase with each drink. Must be some sort of corrilation there.
  17. ---------------- hmmm, maybe i really need a 6.1 channel receiver anyway!... ---------------- Maybe something that has a preset volume at power on
  18. SS makers also use different levels of distortion to create their ratings. For example, my amp is rated at 125w/c. But, they cleanly produce 91w/c, and have a max somewhere in the neihborhood of 145w/c. They could have really picked any number inbetween 90 and 145 for the rating. It just depends on the amount of distortion that a person is willing to accept for the stated rating. To me, my usable power is 91w/c (.005%THD). The 145 is at 1% THD, and 125 is .1% THD. Another thought is, given the calculations from previous posters, to get another +3db above my 91w/c my amp would need to go to a clean 182w/c. Way past even the 145 mark. So, how much more sound pressure is crated by pushing it to 100, 125, or 145? Not enough to notice, and it would do more harm than good.
  19. ---------------- So, everyone chirp in here and tell us: What's the most you've ever paid for an LP? Me? $300. Twice. First one: Duke Jordan-- "Flight to Jordan" Blue Note 4046 (MINT cond.-- the only one I've ever seen--had to buy it!) Second one: Art Pepper-- "The Return of Art Pepper" JazzWest JLP-10 (MINT virtually "unplayed" copy) Foolish? Sure. Regrets? None. ---------------- Paid $250 for a sealed Mofi stones set from a store. Listened to it a couple of times and think it's time to sell. $90 on a sealed Mofi Revolver. Still have it sealed. I don't have the heart to open it. Another one that might go soon. $55 for a sealed St. Pepper. Had to pour myself a glass of wine, dim the lights, and listen, ahhh....
  20. Strabo

    sub work out

Another vote for Pork Soda. Great bass that is musical. Also, a couple of the Soul Coughing CD's. Just ridiculous amounts of bass. Past being musical.
  21. Been a lurker for a while, but had to finally add my 2cents. These have all been great suggestions but missing the amps frequency response metric. I had the Denon 4802 for three months this summer, and decided to upgrade to something else. The 4802 was bright, plain and simple. This gave the impression that it lacked bass. In reality it did have less bass than it had mid and upper frequency output. Power itself isn't as much of a concern, as said by many others here. My suggestion is to listen to a few different amps and find the one that sounds the best to you. Listen to them for hours even and bring music with you that you are used to hearing.
