  1. I think three pairs of the RB-35s would be great. At about $600/pr, I think they would be perfect for a movies and/or music system. Of course if you have the room and budget, RF-7 towers would be golden.
  2. Thanks for the suggestions. One more question. A friend of mine, who does a lot of painting, tells me to not even bother buying a primer. He says it would be better to buy a cheaper paint of the color I want and use it as the primer. Then use the more expensive paint for the final coats to save money. He tells me that all primer is really, is just a "thicker" paint and the MDF will still absorb it as much as the cheaper can of black. Is this true? If so, this is the first I've heard of that.
  3. Hello all, I had called Sherman-Willimas about getting a 40 sheen black lacquer for my front and back panels of my speaker project (plan on veneering the other 4 panels). Looks like the costs are going to be too much for this small of a project, so I was wondering what do some of you all use as an alternative that could give me the same results without breaking my wallet. If I have asked this question already here, I apologize. I have been doing a lot of reading/posting between this forum and a couple of others. Thanks again for the help and suggestions.
  4. (like Frank Barone..) "Holy Crap" Those look very nice Cueman!
  5. Appreciate the links fellows. Thanks. Another question (ok, really a two part question). I'm going to go for a "factory" look for this speaker. I already have all my panels cut out. I did a mock up build using clamps to see what it looks like. Looks like a bookshelf version of my KG5.5s that Klipsch might have made. I'm pretty happy with them. I noticed the KG line has oak veneer on the top, bottom, and sides, but the front/back panels are a 40 sheen black lacquer which I haven't had any luck finding (more on that). When you veneer, 1) do you wait until the enclosure is fully assembled with all the panels, 2) or do you assemble the panels that are to be veneered. In my case, that would be the top, bottom, and sides? As for the lacquer, I contacted Sherman-Williams, but I think for my project, that's going to be too expensive. The front and rear panels have a satin finish, which I have been told is a 40 sheen black laquer. Any of you all know some lesser expensive option I could do to keep the look I want? Btw, big "thank yous" to Steve Philips. I have gotten a lot of info from his emails when I first started on this. Thanks also to you guys and the folks at the S&V forums and the DIYaudio forums. I really appreciate it.
  6. As far as using different Klipsch speakers, I don't know. Seems to make sense if one speaker is +3dB while another is at -2dB that the +3db speaker would be "eating more fuel" from it's amp channel. But with most multichannel amps and receivers using single power supplies for all their channels, would it really matter? Wouldn't a single power supply adjust for that imbalance and keep everything going to the channels equal? I'm just guessing, since I'm no engineer. When I first hooked up my surrounds, I figured all the speakers would be set at the same volume level, individually since they were replacing a pair of less efficient Yamahas. Even with identical speakers, I still have differing individual volume levels. One speaker might be at 0dB while another might be +2.5 and another at -1.5 dB. If the goal is getting the amp channels supplying the speakers to be the same with one not being over/undertaxed, I'm guessing that's going to be impossible due to the room the system is in. The layout of the room itself will be the factor, unless the room was an anechoic chamber. Just a guess, even if you used a lot of room treatments, you would still have differing channel levels. Maybe not to the extreme as without them, but none the less I would think one amp channel is going to be pumping more wattage than another.
  7. As many of you know, I have been working on a custom center for my system. I want the enclosure to look like my KG5.5's medium oak finish. I was given a link by one of the folks at the S&V forums. Any of you all use GL Veeners for your projects? http://www.glveneer.com/index.html?id_glv=0513GL654161 Which of the oak veeners would you recommend for my project? Could I also use Titebond to glue it to the enclosure or is there something better suited for applying veneer? Appreciate the help. Thanks.
  8. Good news. The guy who had the complete system (KG4.5, KG2.5, SW10, and a Sony receiver) has decided to piece it out. His reserve was never met, so he did contact me by email. He offered me the system for $550. That's a steal I thought, but I don't really need the receiver or sub (but might check back with him on the sub though), so I took the KG4.5s and the KG2.5s for $400. Should be closer to $500 after shipping. I figured I can use the KG2.5s in the living room with my older Denon receiver as a second system. The guy had some great feedback and I did get a chance to chat with him on the phone when he offered me his number. I thought that was pretty cool on his part. He seemed like a very nice person and I got a good vibe from talking to him and reading his feedback on Ebay. Hope his speakers are in great condition like he says. Wish me luck.
  9. I don't think she's scaming. She did have those speakers listed with a KV-2 center, but don't remember what the price for the 3 speakers were. At that time was when she quoted me the $450 price. She has relisted them separarely now or did. The auction ended last night, but no one bidded on them. She had them as a buy it now for $375. Her feedback looked good, so I don't think she is scaming. I think she's just haveing a hard time selling them. I also have another email from an ebayer that had a complete system. Since his reserve wasn't met, I think he (or she) is going to piece it out. I appreciate the help you all. Thanks a lot.
  10. Hey you all. Need some advice. I had a person email me wondering if I was still interested in her KG4.5 speakers, but I was wondering what the value of them were. I also emailed a different person with the same speakers that quoted me a price for $450 for hers. I later saw where she had them on ebay at a "buy it now" price of $375. Hmmmm....odd. Needless to say, I didn't return her email. Her auction is still pending, so that may change (she's listed them as "mint"). Both pairs of speakers have the black finish if that means anything. To give you all a little info, I bought my two used pair of KG5.5 for about $350/pr. That includes the $100 for shipping costs. I also saw three auctions on KG5.5 and if you average those prices at the end of the auctions, it would have been about $480/pr - shipping (so + about $107). What would you all think a fair price for the KG4.5 would be? I was thinking maybe $300-$350. Anyone think differently? I appreciate any advice or suggestions you have. Thanks.
  11. Ditto for me. I prefer the light-medium oak to match my 5.5s. Hadn't had any luck on Ebay or Audiogon. Just shoot me a PM.
  12. ---------------- On 4/25/2005 7:30:09 PM AZNracerx1989 wrote: my main question is why do they make them smaller now ---------------- Do you you mean smaller as in their width? If so, then my guess would probably be "home theater". Many of today's speakers have smaller woofers due to the 5.1 speaker setups required for surround sound. Big speakers take up large amounts of space, so the best bet is to make them smaller. If your main setup is just two channel stereo, then space is not much of an issue for a pair of floorstanders sporting 15" woofers in them. Five, however, can eat up a lot of floorspace though. Add in a capable sub, where bigger is usually better, and you can see where an average sized room can get really crowded. At least, that's just my guess.
  13. That is a cool little speaker. The only thing though, it still uses a different tweeter than the KG4.5 and KG5.5. That said, I would hate to take a chance (especially if I haven't heard it) on getting the KG2 in hopes of matching it up with my 4.5s or 5.5s. With that 35Hz low end though, I bet 5-7 of those would sound killer in a surround system. As far as surrounds go, if you have the space, I would look for another pair of KG4.5s to match your fronts. I don't think you will be disappointed. I had mismatched surrounds before (Yamaha bookshelfs) and they were alright with DD5.1 DVDs, but absolutely horrible with 5.1 DVD-A and SACD. Adding another pair of KG5.5 really opened things up. I'm kinda in the same fix for a center as you are. I have posted a similiar question (though it was a couple of years ago) and some had mentioned about building a custom center speaker and using the drivers, components from an extra 4.5. Since I have the 5.5s, what I had it mind was to make a whole new cabinet and use the crossover and drivers from a used KG4.5. They have the same horn tweeter as the 5.5. The dimensions would be the exact same as a stock 4.5 cabinet, except it would be at least 10" shorter in height if I decided to keep it front ported like my others. Truth be told, I'm an amateur at this so my limited knowledge tells me I might have to compromise the port size due to going with smaller cabinet. Also, the low extension wouldn't be as low as with the stock cabinet, but should still be better than my KV-2 (which is 75Hz). Besides, I have a sub for that anyways.
  14. Many eons ago I had inquired about building my own center speaker. Problem is I never got around to doing it and wound up forgetting about it, until now. The question of doing this again has somehow found it's way inside my head, so I thought I would post it and hope the ones that helped me before (which I haven't forgot) won't crucify me for it. LOL! The only difference between then and now is, I think I'm going to go for a bookshelf version of my towers instead of a traditional horizontal center speaker. I would like to be able to use the same parts from an extra 5.5 I have. Basically, the enclosure would be the same width and depth as the 5.5, but just shorter. About 10" shorter if I keep it front ported. Can anyone tell me what the main differences are between the KG4.5 and KG5.5 towers? I noticed, after I took apart my speaker, that the breadboard for the crossover is the same. Is the crossovers the same, or is there something different to compensate for a speaker with two woofers instead of one? Also, what is the differences between the 4.5's k-1005-k woofer as opposed to the 5.5's k-1023-k woofer? Could I use the parts from my extra 5.5, or would I be better off using parts from a 4.5 since that speaker uses a single woofer to begin with? In the meantime, here's some pics of my ht in my new home I bought last year. (finally got married too). Hope you all like. http://community.webshots.com/user/yesfan70 Again, big thank yous to those who were helping me out before iwth ideas and suggestions.
  15. I like A or C personally. I have KG5.5s all around in my setup and I haven't been happier since I switched my old Yamahas out for them. 5.1 movies really opened up, but multi channel audio like SACD and DVD-A really shine with identical speakers. If you can't get the RF-7s, I would probably go with the RB-75s for the surrounds. They should go down plenty enough (mid to low 40s?). Besides, the low stuff the sub will pick up anyways. Nice setup by the way.
  16. I have KG5.5s in my setup. I also have a KV-2 center speaker and, sorry to say, have to agree I think it is a terrible match for the KG line. Why Klipsch never made a bookshelf version of the KG line up is beyond me. Is anyone else having problems with this forum? I keep having to log in everytime I make a post. I usually use Mozilla, but am using IE for this sight. Thanks. Edit: What I mean by bookshelf, is one with a 10" or 8" woofer in it, sort of like how the RB-75 is with the RF-7s
  17. What about quilt batting? Has anyone tried that? I use that in my KG5.5s. They go a bit deeper than before, but what stood out for me was the cleaner highs and mids I get now. Not night and day mind you, but there's a difference. I think I paid about $7-$8 a bag at Wal-Mart. A lot cheaper than the Black Hole stuff.
  18. Holy Conoly are you kidding? Some of my favorites are: Pink Floyd- Dark Side of the Moon (ummm.....given) Peter Frampton- Frampton Comes Alive The Police- Every Breath You Take (best of) Leo Kottke- 6&12 String Guitar Junior Wells- Come On In This House The Who- Tommy John Coltrane- A Love Supreme (stereo only) These will make your ears very happy. Hope this helps!
  19. Edit: I don't know why my post showed up as a blank. Sorry about that. I would probably look into the Denon 2200. I have this player, and it is a pretty solid player for around $550. Plus it plays DVD-Audio and SACD, which sure sounds sweet through my Klipsch speakers! You could probably find it cheaper online (got mine at Tweeter), but they might not be an authorized dealer.
  20. I have had some good experiences on Ebay before. There are a few jerks here and there, just like anywhere else. Like the others have said, I would look to someone else. Another sight you might want to check out is http://www.audiogon.com You might have better luck there, since it is specifically for home audio and home theater. They have auctions, for sale and wanted ads too. You could post what you are looking for, and maybe find someoen who is willing to sell. Just like Ebay, check out the seller's feedback and history before bidding/buying. I wouldn't be afraid of asking too many questions either. Hope this helps. Good luck.
  21. I used just simple ole quilt batting that you could find at your local Wally World. The bass was a bit tighter, but I noticed more detail in the mid and higher end. That's what stood out for me the most. Never heard of caulking the horn. What is the recommend caulk? What about something like blu-tak? Could you use that as well?
  22. Unfortunately, I still have the KV-2. I did think about having a custom enclosure made for the drivers of one of my spare KGs, but I'm afraid that would still be too heavy for my Pioneer RPTV. I would set it in front of, and just below, the screen but I don't really have the room for that big of a center. Even if I had the room, my friend I considered to do it is MIA for a while. I have thought of just going with a RC-7, Academy, or a KV-4 and make due until I can get a front projector setup.
  23. I own the Denon 2200 player, and I can't say enough with how happy I am with it. I think it is one of the best players to get in this price range. If you are interested in both formats, then a universal would be my first choice. I wouldn't worry about it's CD playback compared to a CD only player. If you plan on using the digital connections, it's really a mute point. The 2200 does have Burr-Brown DACs, so I don't think it is no slouch. You can also shut off the video circuits in the 2200 for higher quality playback.
  24. Denon, Marantz, and NAD come to mind for some good matches. To be honest, sound is subjective, so it is really in the "ear" of the beholder. I have seen some people use Yamaha with their Klipsch speakers, and feel it is not an over bright combination at all. I have a Denon 3803 receiver with Klipsch KG5.5 towers all the way around. Like some of the other posts have said, go out and demo using the CDs and DVDs you are the most familiar with.
  25. Have you looked at your bass management settings in your receiver? How are they set? I'm not too familiar with Yamahas, but I think if they do not have an adjustable crossover point for the LFE (or sub) output, then it is fixed at 90Hz. If it is fixed, then it is odd you are not getting any sound from your sub at all, even with 2 channel CDs, which should still get frequencies below 90Hz or whatever crossover point you have selected. With SACDs, and DVD-As if you have a universal player, the bass managment is dependent on the player, not the receiver, and with some of those (unfortunately), the crossover point is fixed. The 2 channel tracks on SACDs will only play on your two front speakers. The sub portion is only for the 5.1 tracks. I don't know what kind of SACD player you have but, see if it has the option to output signals to the sub also with 2 channel material. My Denon 2200 has a "bass enhancer" and it takes frequencies at 80Hz (the player's fixed crossover point) and lower and routes it to my sub. Hope this helps.
