  1. I'm looking to hang a KLF-C7 from the ceiling as a rear center; same problem as you folks, but a somewhat bigger and heavier speaker. I'm probably about a month away from being able to work on this, but would appreciate hearing from anyone who's solved the "ceiling mount problem". If I get to the finish line first, I'll post some details. By the way, I talked with Trey at Klipsch quite a while ago to see what he'd recommend. He didn't have any great commercial solutions, but did say the C7 was definately NOT designed to support itself if hung from something like an OmniMount bracket (i.e., drilling into the speaker to attach a mounting plate). The only possible mount I've found so far is designed for suspending a small TV from the ceiling; it might work, but wouldn't be very elegant. Here's an example: http://www.audio-direct.com/cgi-bin/pgen_asp/pagegen.asp?itemnum=PTC-13-WHITE Looking forward to hearing from anyone who's already tried something like this. With 6.1 and 7.1 systems becoming more common, I expect lots of us will be facing this sooner or later ... Thanks! Steve
  2. I'll second Doug's vote for the Synergy line. For less than $1200, you'll get a great sounding system with well-matched speakers all around. If you go for the bookshelf models for mains, the footprint will be as small as possible. If you can, I'd go for the KSW-12 sub, rather than the KSW-10; not much bigger or more expensive, but gives a lot more oomph ... Good luck! Steve
  3. Great deal! I'm sure you'll love them! As for the shielding, be sure to experiment (a lot!) with placement. The interference falls off rapidly with distance, and the toe-in of each speaker has a big effect as well ...
  4. Actually, uBid has auctions for both KLF-20's and KLF-30's going on right now: http://www.ubid.com/cat/get_cat_page.asp?CatID=3875
  5. aab, It's nice to know someone else has used the KSF-S5 surrounds with KLF-20's... I've been a bit worried about the low sensitivity of the S5's (90) vs that of the 20's (100). I'll have to wait to get this all set up (in a few weeks) to see how it all sounds in my HT room. This all started when I upgraded my receiver to 6.1 surround (a Newcastle R-956). Then I grabbed the 10's and 20's on uBid; have since passed the 10's on to a friend. Then, got two KLF-C7's on uBid. I've probably exhausted my spousal unit's tolerance of HT ugrades for a few months, but will quietly ponder going for KSP-S6's or RS7's when the time is right! The big hurdle right now is figuring out how to hang that monster C7 from the ceiling for the rear center, and how to convince my wife that the 20's are not just speakers -- they're also fine furniture! If you're seriously looking for a new C7, you might keep an eye out on uBid. They've been going for about $250+ s/h there; not offered every day, but they still seem to be available every now and then .... Cheers! Steve
  6. I've got a friend who's interested in my front three (KSB3.1's and KSC-C1) to start his HT system. For the time being, I'm going to hang onto my KSF-S5 surrounds and try them with the Legends ....
  7. Last month, I purchased a pair of KLF-10's and a pair of KLF-20's (all mahagony) from uBid. No problem with either, other than with shipping. I had them sent to my office, and both sets were delivered to the wrong address (a different building at our university). So, I'm not happy with FedEx Ground shipping, but that's not really a problem with uBid or the quality of the speakers. We're having some home remodeling done, so all I've been able to do with these so far is check for damage and make sure they work ok. Looking forward to actually replacing my Synergy speakers with these in a few weeks! Ubid's also been offering the matching center - the KLF-C7, so you'll probably want to upgrade to that if you indeed go after the 10's or 20's. By the way, my understanding is that all of the Klipsch speakers on uBid actually come with the full 5-year warranty (no matter what's listed on each auction). That's been posted by several others on this BB as well. Good luck!
  8. Check out Omnimount brackets. Their web site can point you to the correct model for your speakers and give you a list of dealers: http://www.omnimount.com
  9. There have been a couple of recent discussions about refinishing wood veneer speakers: http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum4/HTML/002408.html http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum9/HTML/001411.html These may give you some useful information ....
  10. If you're comfortable with uBid, you might check them out: http://www.ubid.com/cat/get_cat_page.asp?CatID=1226 They've had KLF-20's off and on for a few months now. Seem to cycle between Oak, Mahogany, and Black every week or so. Going prices seem to be between about $250 and $350 each (plus about $80/each S&H). With some patience, you might get a black pair at a good price, and not have to worry about refinishing them .....
  11. In the shadow of this week's horror, I wanted to offer a favorite quote .... On Feb. 14, 1990, the Voyager 1 spacecraft pointed back toward the sun and took a series of pictures of the sun and the planets, making the first ever 'portrait' of our solar system as seen from the outside. The Earth, some 4 billion miles distant, appeared as just a few pixels -- a "Pale Blue Dot". In his book of the same name, astronomer Carl Sagan had this to say about this unique view of our home world: "We succeeded in taking that picture , and, if you look at it, you see a dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam. The earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and in triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner of the dot. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity -- in all this vastness -- there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us. To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."
  12. I'd recommend getting a copy of the AVIA Guide to Home Theater DVD. It's a great help for setting up both the audio and video portions of your HT system. You can find it at the usual sources (Amazon.com, etc.), or go directly to the producer: http://www.alphadvd.com/ It's a great resource!
  13. Check out the Home Theater forum on this BB. Someone just listed a pair of white KSP-S6's for sale .... I doubt they'd cost very much more than a pair of KLF-C7's, and the S6's would be much better suited to the surround role.
  14. I've been dealing with uBid for about the last 3 years, and have had mostly good results. Most items have shipped within a few days of the auction's close, and have arrived in good shape. I have found emailing them with questions is useless -- response time is a few weeks, if ever. It's better to call Customer Service (1-888-900-8243) and actually talk with someone. Doster1, your experience of having an order cancelled as unavailable when they continue to auction the same item is totally unacceptable! I'd call again, and request a supervisor if the regular customer rep. isn't helpful. You can always threaten to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and also file a negative report with Bizrate.com. Hopefully, a supervisor can cut through the BS and get the items you legitimately purchased sent to you. After all, when you place a bid, they state that you're entering into a legally binding contract to purchase the item if successful. They certainly won't let you back out if you change your mind, so this contract should be binding on them to actually sell you the product if you've got a winning bid! Good luck, and do let us know how this all turns out...
  15. Paul, Sound and Vision magazine has been running a series of articles on "How to shop for TV's" and "How to decipher the techno-babble surrounding TV's". I think these will probably answer your questions: http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/SoundAndVision/Article01/Features/howtv0301/howtv0301p01.html http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/SoundAndVision/FrameSet/Product/HomeTheater0100/laydownlawp01.html http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/SoundAndVision/Article01/Features/howhdtv0301/howhdtv0301p01.html Hope these help! Steve
  16. I used Omnimount brackets to hang a pair of KSF-S5's from the ceiling. I believe the S5's are similar size and weight to the RS-3's. The Omnimounts provide a very solid mount, and the flexibility gained in aiming the speakers is great. The hardest part about using these was finding actual joists in our ceiling -- my electronic "stud finder" seemed to pick up things like wiring much better than the joists! Steve
  17. Paul, Once you start looking at specific models, check out the consumer ratings for VCRs at: http://www.audioreview.com/reviews/VCR/ I've had a JVC HR-S4800 (SVHS) for about a year now, and have no complaints. It does an excellent job recording from our DSS system, and really blows standard VHS out of the water. It seems to play back standard (prerecorded) VHS tapes with visibly higher quality than our old Sony (non-SVHS) deck connected to the same TV; this could possibly be the visible difference between an S-video (JVC) connection and a standard composite (Sony) connection ... Anyway, as you've already found with audio, some large part of video preferences are "in the eye of the beholder"! Steve

You may want to repost your offer to the following thread: http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum4/HTML/002226.html There are many folks interested in the Legends, and the KSP-S6 seems to be a particularly hot item!
  19. Here's a KLF-30 review that has a shot of the mahogany finish: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_7_1/klipsch-klf-30-speakers-3-2000.html I know I've seen black satin KLF-10's and -20's on uBid in the past couple of weeks. They seem to have had Legends on auction for awhile now, so if you really want black finish, I say just keep an eye on the auctions for a week or so and see what turns up. Good luck!
  20. I've got a KSW-12 as well, and would highly recommend it with your setup. Whatever sub you consider, though, I'd check out the feedback on AudioReview.com: http://www.audioreview.com/reviews/subwoofer/ I've found these reviews to be a good way to get steered away from the real turkeys!
  21. Thanks for the reply, Danny. My family room has several doors inconveniently located along the side & rear walls, so I can't use floor standing speakers for surrounds. I've got the S5's and the rear center hung from the ceiling. So, I'll have to stick with something like the S5's, S6, RS-3, ... Right now, I'm looking into a deal on a pair of KLF-10's and C7's. So, I may have to do this in a phased approach (see what it all sounds like with the S5's before I negotiate with my spousal unit to sink even more $$ into the HT!). I'd still be glad to hear more comments on this potential setup before I jump into it! Thanks! Steve
  22. You might keep an eye out on eBay; seems like S5's pop up every week or so: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?query=Klipsch+KSF&ht=1 Good luck! Steve
  23. (I tried posting this twice last evening, but ran into problems with the web site. Please forgive me if this is redundant ....) I'm in the "thinking stages" of upgrading my HT system from Klipsch Synergy speakers (KSB-3.1 mains, KSC-C1 front/rear centers, KSF-S5 surrounds, and KSW-12 sub) to Legends (KLF-10 or 20's for fronts, KLF-C7 for front/rear centers). My receiver is a Sherwood Newcastle R-956 (120 w/ch for 6.1 surround). I downloaded the Legends' manual from the Klipsch website, and noticed the KSF-S5 is the recommended rear surround for the KLF-10, but the KSP-S6 is recommended with the KLF-20 and 30. Given how rare (and pricey) the S6's have become, I'm wondering how well my S5's would blend in with the 20's and C7's ... I doubt I'm going to find anywhere I can demo these different setups, so thought I'd ask guidance from the considerable wisdom and experience of folks on this BB. Has anyone used KSF-S5's as surrounds with KLF-20's as mains and KLF-C7's as centers? Would it be better to stick with KLF-10's for the mains? Should I just leave well enough alone, and join a 12-step program for HT addicts?! Thanks for your advice & comments! This message has been edited by SteveLee on 08-17-2001 at 01:15 PM
  24. I've been dealing with uBid for about two years now, and have had generally positive experiences. There were some past threads on this forum as to whether uBid is an authorized Klipsch reseller (search the archives on "uBid"); my recollection is that BobG said Klipsch was experimenting with using uBid as an Internet seller of discontinued inventory, and that indeed the warranty was valid. Just a couple of pointers when dealing with them. 1) Their shipping/handling is often quite inflated. Be sure to factor this in to your bidding. Also, if you're bidding on a pair of speakers, the bid price and s/h shown is PER EACH not per pair. 2) Know what you're willing to pay, and don't get caught up in a bidding frenzy. New auctions for the same item often start within an hour or so of the previous auction's close. So, with a bit of patience you can often get a good deal after trying your hand at several auctions. 3) If you really want an item, try to place a minimum bid as soon as the auction opens. This gives you an early "time stamp" -- assuming there are several items up for grabs, this is very important to actually winning an auction other than by having the highest bid. Then, don't place another bid until shortly before the auction closes. At that point, enter a bid for the minimum needed to get back into the action. Your early "time of first bid" will place your new bid ahead of all others (at the same price and quantity) who placed their initial bids later than yours. Good luck! 25. As far as I know, the only way to see what bids won a uBid auction is if you've actually made a bid yourself (successful or not). Then, you can log in to "My Page", and go to "My Bids". It will show a list of auctions you've bid on, and the range of successful bids for each. I'm not aware of anything comparable to the "Search Completed Auctions" on eBay. So, if you're not bidding but interested in finding out the "going rate" for an item, you'll have check the auction shortly before it closes; once it's over, the list of successful bids disappears.
