  1. To continue to beat a dead horse, congrats and ARE YOU CRAZY!!! SURROUNDS FOR RF7'S????? Put them on stands and try them out for a while in 2 channel. If you have a good subwoofer use it with them.
  2. I agree. I bought an Antec 2400 case and then changed out the fans (which were already very quiet) with even quieter fans. When the fan on the CPU is turned down the computer is not audible at all. So what to do about the card? Do I go for the 6600 card with a fan or use a 5200 without a fan? I just want a music server with a remote, life shouldn't be this hard.
  3. I thought that it may be a necessary and desirable to cool my power supply and CPU.
  4. The fan is teh question. I used an Antec "Silent Case" and then replaced the fans with ones that were even a few DB quieter. When the CPU is not running at 100% all of the time, I can turn the CPU fan down and you cannot hear the fans at all. The problem is that the 6200 not listed as compatible with Media Center 2005 and the 6600 is. They also list lower cards such as the 5200. I did some searching and there are other problems that can arise. Many who tried the 6200 have had to reboot to record shows and other problems. So if I want this to be compatable I can choose between the 5200 and the 6600. The 5200 will be silent an dthe 6600 will perform better. Will a 5200 work for music server purposes and not be slow? How loud is teh fan on a 6600?
  5. Rich, Did you have any problems with the 6200? Windows only lists the 6600 and 6800. Is there a reason for this? I also built a really quiet PC. I am trying to decide if I want a card with a fan or not. If cooling is an issue I will go with a 6600 with a fan. Is teh fan quiet or do your other fans drown them out? I am down to between this 6600: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1642902&CatId=935 and this 6200 (if a 6200 will not have any problems): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150107 The 6200 will be silent and everyone says that it runs cool if not used for gaming. I have a 350 watt supply so I can use either. Which one to use?
  6. Did you have a problem just playing music and using the Media Center overlay and graphics? I like the remote and interface. I just need it to keep up. Can anyone tell me if I need to avoid a fan on the Video card to keep it quiet? If so, I am stuck using a 5200 with 256 memory if I follow the approved comonents for Media Center 2005. Will a Nvidia 5200 be enough?
  7. I am using the video on the motherboard. I'm sure that it is not that great. I have two hard drives but don't have the OS on one and the music on another. I did create partitions when I installed the OS. I should also mention that they are ATA and not SATA drives. Will the 5200 card run cooler than the 6600? The only video that I plan on using is on onscreen interface. I just want a music server. This machine is a few years old and if I ever go to use it as a full HTPC I will probably just build a better machine, so I don't necessairly want to get a card that is beyond what I need it for. I also want to avoid a fan because I don't want the noise.
  8. I built this computer a few years ago and never used it, I don't want to upgrade because a music server shoudl be an easy application, its just streaming music. I like the interface that Media Center 2005 has. It has a remote control and onscreen it loads album covers. You scroll through the covers and choose your music. Whenever I go to a sceen that has a bunch of covers the computer jumps to about 80 to 100% CPU usage. I can also use a bunch of resources just grabbing the Task Manager window and moving it back and forth quickly, it leaves trails and the CPU usage jumps up very high. When I just use Media Player the computer does OK, it just has trouble with Media Player. Media Player also warns me that my video card is not compatible. I want as little card as possible for two reasons, cheap and I don't want a fast card that will generate too much heat, I want to stick with fanless. The 6200 is not certified (see above). I think that a 6600 or 6800 should work. Can I get by with 128 or 256 memory? It seems hard to find cards that have 512. I also read up on the AGP 8X slot. That seems to be what I need as it is faster than the PCI slot. I am worried about using a card with a fan. Are they quiet or should I avoid them? I can't find a faster card without a fan for the AGP slot. This card has a fan and is on the list: Nvidia 6600 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1642902&CatId=318 Something like this does not have a fan but it may not have enough memory: Nvidia 5200 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=588461&body=REVIEWS
  9. I played around with Task Manager and teh CPU goes to 80 to 100% when it has a video load. I think I need a card. I found this list of compatable cards (old list): ATI Mobility RADEON 9800 ATI RADEON 9800 Series ATI RADEON X800 Series ATI Mobility RADEON X700 NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 NVIDIA GeForce FX5700 NVIDIA GeForce FX5750 NVIDIA GeForce 6600 NVIDIA GeForce 6800My motherboard has an AGP 8X slot open and a 32 bit PCI slot open. I want to use a card that has no fan to keep it quiet. I don't care about gaming, I just want a music server, I want the card to run cool and I want the computer to run smoothly. What do I need to buy?
  10. I have an HT server built on Windows Media Center 2005. I love the interface and remote, but it is sluggish. I have a Pentium 4 2.8 with 2 gigs of ram. This thing should run like a champ. I know that my video is not compatibel with the OS, but will that drain my resources? I can add a video card for $50 but I want to make sure that I am fixing teh actual problem. Anyone out there experienced with this OS?
  11. Has anyone compared the JBL 2370, 2380 and 2385 horns to the Altec 511 or Tractrix horns? It looks like the patent has long expired and knockoffs are really cheap: http://www.aftermarketdiaphragms.com/horns.html An adaptor will be needed for a 1" driver but that is not a big deal. This looks like an easy repalcement for a Khorn.
  12. I'm glad that you guys survived listening to a pair of B&W 802's without your eardrums shriveling up. I'd like ot hear that Palladiums. I will look for them at CES next January.
  13. Here, just read the reviews of this $500 ethernet cable: http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B000I1X6PM/ref=cm_cr_pr_link_1?%5Fencoding=UTF8&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending It will chear you up.
  14. I heard the Adcom GFA 555 on a pair of B&W's. Pretty harsh and should be avoided on revelaing speakers like Klipsch. Try a QSC PLX 1202 for about $300 on Ebay. Don't be afraid of the 200 wpc, you will never turn it up that loud.
  15. Based on the Bose theory of 90% reflected in regular speakers, I am comming up with 98.8% being reflected in the 901's . 8 of 9 speakers are "directly reflecting" (88.88%). Plus 90% of the front speaker 1/9 x 90%. Man these are bad speakers by at least 8.8%. Kidding aside the problem is that Amar forgot that recordings are mastered to give a three D soundstage and his invention just destroys it. I gret up around 601's and liked them when I was 14. I bought JBL monitors when I was 19 and could not believe the difference, they actually imaged.
  16. Here you go: http://www.topix.com/forum/who/bose Rock on dude[:#]
  17. Absolutely beautiful. I love how you used the black accents to work the Jubilee into the room seamlessly and make it look like it belongs there. Very very nice!!
  18. That's not really necessary. Let them be. They just have an opinion, and look at how much entertainment is was to read the list.
  19. Read the reviews. $20K will barely get you started.
  20. Just like Peppermint Patty's bad dreams, D-, http://www.higherfi.com/comparator/b.htm
  21. The interesting thing is that they do not seem to like anything. I think that a B or B+ is the highest that they went because "no speaker deserves an A." What I find as very intersting is what if you buy a speaker from them? Do they say "Congrats on your $25000 speaker, we feel that it is a solid C-"
  22. This is interesting. Highe Fi, the online seller of insanely expensive equipment rates various speakers. http://www.higherfi.com/comparator/index.htmlhttp://www.higherfi.com/comparator/k.htm'> Apparently they only like YG Accoustics and Von Schweikert.
  23. Your Sansui should work great. I love the look with a black box and rows of silver knobs. Looks liek something that NASA would have used in teh 1960's. How much power does it have? A member here recently compared some vintage Sansui to Macintosh and preferred the Sansui.
