  1. Build some first order single frequency crossovers. You need some test tones, and handful of capacitors and inductors and a speaker. Show how the inductors and caps act as filters. Plug some numbers into equations to figure the frequency. Pretty easy, should be just right for a 12 year old.
  2. Erik, As we have discussed, I love digital amps. But here I can't help but think that the "high end" digital amps are just more expensive. They don't need huge power supplies or massive heat sinks, which shoud keep the cost pretty low. The filter design is where the money has to go, but these items shoudl be much less than the heavy parts. It's a shame that in audio, if it doesn't sell, double the price and they will move...
  3. I had a QSC PLX 3402 and a pair of Brystom 7b St monoblocks in my house. I kept the Brystons but the QSC came very close. They are unbelieveably good for the price. The impedance mismatch can be fixed by swapping out two resistors. There is a guy in Denver who can do it. Check out teh basstalk forum. As of about 3 months ago he had not figured out the PLX2 yet, but it you buy new, you can ask that this be done at the factory (at least for the old series).
  4. First check Musicians Friend. They were blowing out the PLX series amps. There are two versions of the series 2 amps, designated by an "02" or an "04" One of the two, I think the "02" amps, does not have the current capacity of the other. This may not be a problem with klipsch speakers, but you shoudl know that one is a heavier duty version than the other.
  5. I sold them. They were factory finished in tigerwood...or I would have use "TeakwoodKhorns" If you know someone in or near Vegas, I do have a K Horn project for sale with Speakerlab Bass bins, JBL 2470 mids and 2404 tweeters, digital active crossover, etc. They would have to have some minimal woodworking skills. I have designed false corners that are similar to the ones that I previously built, but the result wil look much more like a Jubilee. I also have a pair of heresys (just rebuilt the crossovers), an academy and an SW15 subwoofer. The Academy and subwoofer may be spoken for. Chris
  6. What do I need to use to clean the stylus? It looks like I need the Disc Doctor brushes. What does a scratch sound like? I always thought of a skip but I guess a scratch can cause a click every time the needle goes over it.
  7. OK, I bought teh VPI 16.5 and record research fluid. After cleaning, records are still noisey. Pop and click in the soft passages. What else do I need to do? I have an original master recording of crime of the century and I'd rather listen to the CD.
  8. Not sure what you want them for, but you should be able to find some decent vintage speakers for $50.
  9. If prices are close, or just given the choice for that matter, go for the belles. Resale is higher and they look more like furniture than like PA speakers. My 2 cents. They are also smaller and will fit into a room better.
  10. Those tubes will work in a less critical preamp (maybe a Peach) or they definatelty will work in a dac like in an AH CD player.
  11. I'm not that far away (shipping wise) and have a better deal for you if you are interested. I have everything to build a set of "ultimate K horns". Here is what I have: 2 factory built Speakerlab bass bins and drivers. These are factory built and high quality. They are copies of the K Horn bass bin. They are narrow on the sides because the later Speakerlab bass bins eliminated an empty portion of the K Horn bass bin. This results in a more "Jubilee looking" bass bin. I also have AutoCAD drawing of a design for false corners that I was going to build. They have a constant flare rate even around the bend. They also should be very easy to build, especially compared to the entire bass bin. It was going to use Cherry plywood. I also have 2 JBL 2470 compression midrange drivers. The seller told me that these have new phenolic diaphragms in them. They look to be in new shape and test at something like 11 ohms or so. I also have the plans to build a pair of Edgar Tractrix midrange horns. They are built from wood and pretty straightforward. I was going to use cherry Plywood for these too. I also have 2 2404 Baby Cheek JBL Tweeters. Nice pro stuff. This is the really expensive tweeter that some use on the Klipsch forum. For a crossover I have a Yamaha D2040 professional digital dividing network. This thing is unreal and sold for $3,000 new (retail was $4,000). It is used but very nice. Should last forever in a home system. I was going to build a cherry plywood cabinet for it to make it match the speakers. I also have two Teac AL700P 3 channel 30 wpc digital amps. One of the channels on each can be monobridged so that the output will be 30, 30, 60 wpc. These amps sound amazing. I compared them directly to a pair of Wright 3.5 SET's and my friend and I both liked the Teacs. Basically, you would be set except for a CD player as the crossover can work as a preamp. I used a Peach preamp with it and was very happy. I dont know if you have seen my Avitar but I built some beautiful false corners. These would be similar but have narrower sides and a flat top with the midrange horns displayed on the top, just like the Jubilee. There is also a section on the front of the Speakerlab Bass Bins to mount the Tweeters. They should be really beautiful when done. If you are considering building bass bins, this will be much easier and the result will be outstanding. I want $1500 plus any shipping for everything. Should be able to ship in two boxes by Fed Ex. The price is very low. The JBL Tweeters are something like $275 each, the midrange drivers are really expensive too. The replacement diaphragms alone are $250 each. You will not be disappointed. Let me know if you are interested. Chris
  12. What do T 350s look like? I have a pair of tweeters that came with a pair of speakerlabs.
  13. I would have bet it was the pinched waist. I went through three of them when I had a Peach. Try a Russian "rocket" logo tube in that stage. You can get a "platinum" grade one from Upscale Audio for $30. It may be closer to the vintage tube sound than you think. (Not tryign to start a flame war here). I no longer have tube equipment because of my experience with vintage tubes. EDIT- just saw that you have a bugle boy spare. You are all set.
  14. I found some great sleeves on ebay that were pretty cheap. I paid about $43 for 200. They are curved on the inner side so that the corners don't bunch up in the record jacket.
  15. Al, Writers are the worst. Every time someone tells me they have an English degree I shudder. They are basically saying that they have an excuse to be completely arbitrary with a loose set of rule so that thye can say that their way is the correct way. You would not believe how many attorneys waste huge amounts of client funds (at $250 to $700 and hour) to change wording. I agree with changes that make a legal difference, but I'm talking about changes that make no difference at all except "I just like it better this way." Glad you stuck to your guns.
  16. Fritz, Thanks for posting. It looks like Page 14 is missing.
  17. Amazing thing is... If you watch the Audiogon auctions, you will see that people actually bid on this stuff! Paul **************************************** I know, you almost think they deserve to lose their money. I wonder how many of the bids are shilles for the sellers.
  18. What can I say? I just have to have them. Says you need at least three. http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/auc.pl?accstwek&1160278925&1160267079 http://www.machinadynamica.com/machina44.htm
  19. The cart sounds great. Nice bass on the Scout. One thing is interesting, the soundstage is between the speakers. It never goes beyond the speakers. Other than that, I really like it. I have been buying vinyl. Its a lot of fun and much less expensive than buying equipment.
  20. I have an SW15 that I am considering selling. It should take the place of the two that you want to get. nevadamail@hotmail.com
  21. My cleaning people lost my cartridge protector for my Dynavector 20x. To my horror, when I got home from vacation, my tonearm was hanging off or its unipivot and the cartridge protector is now gone. I try not to think about what must have happened. Anyway, does anyone have one of these? I try to be very careful with my cart and always put the protector back on when I am done. Well, now its gone. Thanks, Chris
  22. The Russian Rockets and the Amperex tubes both made a huge difference in bass, at least in my case.
  23. Mark has awesome customer service. Best I have ever seen.
