  1. Moon, Are you thinking of KLF30's? I had a pair for a month and took them back. I was using a Denon receiver and they would fatigue the hell out of my ears. I know that you hear that about all Klipsch speakers, but the KLF's are particularly bad in this respect. My K-horns hooked up to the same receiver sounded so much better. a tad bit (ie very little) bit to harsh in the midrange, but nothing like the KLF's. If you are looking for some slim speakers to fit your room, go with the Chorous. A pair sold locally for $500 recently (Valentines day, I waited until the next morning and they were gone--Oh well didn't need another set of speakers anyway) If you don't want Heritage (or quasi-heritage like Chorous) go for the RF7's. I got a used pair for a friend and they are really nice sounding, plus they are tall and skinny. You should be able to get a pair for about half of what you will get for your Belle's. The RF7 is way smoother and no fatigue like the KLF's. Chris
  2. gary, could you look at the "tigerwood khorn photos" post that i made a few days ago. look at the second high resolution pic. I would swear that this is the same wood as my k-horns. Chris
  3. looking at the classes that you are in, you have "the right stuff" to do it. Just hang in there. Chris
  4. Oh let me ramble for a while. Calculus - if you become an engineer you will study it like you would not believe then never use it. I used 9th grade algebra at work the other day (solving for x with 2 variables). That is how hard it gets as an engineer. I do use trig a lot. I know one engineer that used calculaus once in his career. (he had to find the volume of a non-uniform shape; that whole defining a function then rotate it about an axis) Here is something for you - if you go to engineering school will you be satisfied with an engineering career? You will work very hard for a degree that is as hard as medical or law, but for much less money. To put it in perspective, I worked all morning at my engineering job and right this very moment I am sitting in a Conn Law 2 class at law school. Ie I am speaking from experience (taking the bar in July). I met several attorneys and realized that most engineers that I know are much smarter, but making much less money and not getting the joy that they thought that they woulld get from their jobs. Engineering is a messy web of red tape and hoops that you need to "design through" that are just a joke. After engineering school, law school is not too bad, more stressful but the material is easier. I would reccomend Dental School. great career if you like to work with your hands and a great schedule. I know that this sounds bad and I will get a bunch of replies about how money is not the only thing, but I have been practicing and lived the life. After a certain level you do not design, you just deal with unrealistic clients. not much different than law. Just some food for thought...and oh yea, keep studying!! Chris
  5. Here is a pair in tigerwood. I was told that these were a custom order from Klipsch. Whatever the history is, I relly like them. Chris
  6. Just some FYI. When I bought my horns, the guy selling them said to put them 4" above the ground and 5 feet from the wall. When I auditioned them, he had them hooked up to a cheap receiver and they sounded OK. I took a leap of faith and bouth them because I wanted a pair since I was a kid. This was before I found this forum. After playing with placement and a better receiver they sounded much better. I am now using a Scott tube amp and it is even better. The moral is that if they are not set up properly when you go to see them, realize that they will sound much better in your room, which is just about ideal. I have tall ceilings too and they just fill the room. You will be happy with them no matter what you buy. The imaging is fantastic, your amp will seem like it has infinite power with the speakers producing high decibles with no effort and no "horny-nasal" sound. These are horns, but they are very good horns. Chris
  7. I posed a few pics of the Khorns in the 2-channel forum. Where are you getting the zebrawood fronts made and is it the same wood as mine? By the way, is anyone interested in the single La Scala? and how do I ship it? Chris
  8. Here is a higer resolution photo. It is 1.4 megs so if you have a slower modem it may take a few minutes. Chris
  9. I finally got a digital camera. I was told that this is Tigerwood. Is this the same as zebrawood and how can I match it (where can I buy laminate?) Also, there is a set of La Scalas for sale locally and I only need one. anyone interested in the other (and how do I ship it?) Thanks, Chris
  10. That sounds like the finish. do you have pics that you can post? I may have some thime this weekend to take some pics of mine. Chris
  11. they are in las vegas Nevada and shipping will be a problem. chris
  12. a local person has a set of la scalas for sale for $1000. I only need one for a center. is anyone interested in the other? Chris
  13. Where can I get the head cleaner. Do I have to go to rat shack? Chris
  14. I left a tape in a VCR with the power on in a closed cabinet for too long. Tapes are now sticking to the heads. How do I clean them? Can I take the vcr apart and use a Q tip and rubbing alcohol on the heads? I don't want to ruin the VCR. Thanks, Chris
  15. I used a set of binding post boxes from radio shack fro my heresys. They seem to be about the same quality that is supplied woth most speakers. they were $5 each. Chris
  16. Randy, What is the type A modification and what results did you get? Chris
  17. Jim N, Is it true that you can buy the parts to build a pair of ALK's for $200. I would be game for that price. I heard that the parts were much more expensive, but I have no personal knowledge about this. What aprts do I need and where can I get the schematic. Chris
  18. Jeff, Unlike vintage amps, you need to upgrade those points to an electronic unit. Maybe add an MSD 6AL CD box too. Oops, sorry, off subject! Personally, I hope that you like your new amp. I love the Scott unit taht you sold be (If it would only sit flat!) Chris
  19. If anyone wants to split the pair, I would be interested in one for a center (I have a design for extensions so that a corner is not needed - basically build a "bell" that the bottom slides into) Chris
  20. Dean, Sorry to hear the news. I hope that your child has a quick recovery. Chris
  21. Try checking the speaker wire connection post. I have a set of heresys that needs new ends put on (just have not gotten around to it yet)The sound can be "turned off" by wiggling the post. Take the back off and look at everything. Check for loose/worn wire terminals, wires hanging by a thread or anything else obvious. if that does not reveal the problem, do all of the tests mentioned. Chris
  22. Rob, I am glad that you posted that PIC. My "tigerwood" k-horns are the zebrawood that you posted. actually, the grain on mine is more pronounced (more contrast with a reddish tone). When I finally borrow a digital camera and have some time, I will post a pic. I absolutely love them. The owner told me that they were $10K. I don't believe him, but I imagine that they do cost more. Does anyone know what they go for new? Chris
  23. I just got a rat shack SPL meter today and did some rough measuring. I am running a Scott l-48 25 wpc amp. I was so worried about having enough power to drive my K-horns with a mere 25 watts. I now realize that this is more power than I will probably ever need. My usual listening (comfortable) is about 85-90 db peaks (music about 3 lower). Really loud is 95-100 db at the listening position. Doing a rough measurement (about 1 meter away from the speaker ands registering 104 db, the published efficiency) the system was really really loud. Definately more than I would listen to normally. If this is "roughly" 1 watt, it fills a big room very well (14' wide x 29' deep with a 2 story ceiling and opening into other rooms). Bottom line, I now understand how a 3 wpc SET amp can have plenty of power. Jeff, sorry about all of the questions before I bought the amp. In my defense, I did try to buy a meter sooner. Chris
