  1. Second post here. EBAY SHOULD BAN THE SECOND CHANCE OFFER No doubt eBay thought they were getting ripped off by unscrupulous sellers who were playing the game of a high reserve and lower under-the-radar second chance offers. That may have to change as eBay seems to be uncaring about the widespread deception that their model is allowing. Tim, you should email eBay and let them know that the scammers took advantage of an opportunity in which eBay is passively complicit, if not partially accountable. The scammer(s) got your email through a hole in eBay's structure. You acted in good faith. This is a real can of worms for eBay.
  2. Too bad we can't make a "housecall." If it's any consolation, a business owner associate of a friend lost $5K on a computer second chance offer. So, you are not alone. There will be a way that these ethugs can be caught in the future. Unfortunately, it may come in return for state or federally taxed internet. You know, "protection money." Thanks for posting your hardship, dreadful as it may be. Maybe others will take heed and share your story to avoid another's mistake. It won't happen twice, though. Right?
  3. That ranks right up there with the "ghost in a jar" auctions. Then the spin-offs happened. It was hysterical. I have rarely laughed so hard while reading eBay auctions. The bids get yanked later. It is all fun n games.
  4. on eBay. make him an offer. ONE vertical cornwall. Ooh la la. San Francisco. it's christmas. EDIT: right. I mean San Diego
  5. All I have lying around; one pos denon (I will not even dignify it with capitalization) and two crappy pioneers. Probably not worthy of your consideration.
  6. Pack 'em up and send them to NOS. Don't waste your time with old stuff unless you are above the "what's that thing do?" level of electonics knowledge. I have wasted time and money monkeying with things I know little about. In retrospect, if I could have saved and bought things that were already up to snuff, I could have had more time with things that I really enjoy. Most of the vintage stuff I bought on eBay went right back up on eBay because I don't have patience for them. Shortcuts are rarely worth the risk. And when it comes to electronics, we are talking about potentially lethal risks. Don't screw around with electronics unless you are well "grounded" in, at least, the fundamentals.

Digital is for tubes as viny is for SS? Well, not quite. Months ago I put on a CSNY record (yea, that is what we used to call them) after years of digital. Grant it that my digital playback is not near what yours is, but I literally spun around at my system as I was caught by the, dare I say, NATURALNESS of the sound. OH! it sounded good. But, admittedly, I am 47 and memories of a real stereo system (tweak!!) rebounded in my head and I was 18 again. Maybe THAT might bring some to vinyl's defense. But it is more than that. Real world music is not sanitized 1s and 0s. So you cannot expect that 1s and 0s will accurately replicate musicness. BUT SOME like that. Digital is upon us because (are you ready for this?) IT IS CHEAP! Okay, I will run and hide now.
  8. If you really want to be more confused, read the review of the Allison Acoustic speaker in the new Stereophile. There is a good primer, of sorts, about room dynamics, bass phasing, dispersion, etc. It really is a review of Allison's Model Three, but you can get a good idea the difficulty in designing a speaker made for everyone. There is so much personal taste involved, you have to decide what YOU like and why and stick to your guns unless, for some reason, you taste changes. Before you ever change speakers, rearrange your furniture.
  9. It's amazing to see that there are vintage collectors out there who are just as, if not more so, concerned with aesthetics than audio quality. This is not a knock on Cornwalls, but rebuilding retro rooms, systems, whatever, drives the market of mint vintage equipment just like furniture. I saw an Eico HF-81 sell for about $650 just because it was one-owner, all original, and routinely maintained. Great to see it happen. It is good for all here. Gary did you happen to keep those zebra Cornwall boxes?
  10. So you are going to crawl around on your hands and knees in front of the screen when you are searching for music and movies?

Four Forte's, an Academy, two Heresy II's, two KG2's, and now two Cornwalls.....arggghhh the madness.....now I'll probably have to reconfigure the whole dang theater, and my Academy won't match my Corn's, blah-blah-blah.... Is enough ever enough? Popbumper ---------------- The idea is to eventually have speakers that are too large to move around and thereby prevent you from buying any more or changing stuff around. You are almost there.
  12. Funny how things change. Months ago, someone offered, on eBay, a pair of "pink" decorator cornwalls for around 6 bills. No takers. So the seller parted them out and made more $ in the end. It always happens that way. I got the crossovers for $100 on a BIN. I don't know why I took them. I guess after listening to a pair once, I figured that I would, someday, let curiosity get the better of me and build a pair. Well that was around 5 months ago. I still have them. Why not just get a single Heresy and cut it in half, reglue the bottom sans woofer and run a cheap powered sub on the center channel? Sounds like a more direct route than trying to score a beater set of cornwalls. Horns don't need a box, anyway.
  13. I once knew someone whose husband had Luxman tube amps, Dahlquist speakers, etc. A friend of his was envious of the great sound. SO, he bought the exact same equipment. Was he able to duplicate the sound? NO! There is a lot more than equipment to be taken into account when assembling a system. Keep on smilin', Smilin! And Happy Thanksgiving!

And, oh yea, I also wrap a trash bag around speakers first when I ship them. I recently sent out some drivers from another speaker set recently. Two sets, two packages, both going to California from Maryland. I reduced the shipping from a total of $25 to $21 since it was the same buyer for both lots. The buyer includes in his PayPal payment comment, "$21 should be enough to pack them really good." It costs me $19 just for the shipping charges. I guess he figures I am profiting $3? Hardly. When you spend nearly half an hour packing it right, considering that anyone's labor is worth $25/hour easily, printing a label from FedEx online, driving to FedEx (fortunately for me is only 5 minutes away), I came out at a loss on the items. AS a buyer, I would rather wait for something to show up locally. God knows I have plenty of stuff to which to listen in the meantime. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
  15. For a few mill/year, I think I could take a beer tossed at me. These guys are not of the same persuasion. When even direct eye contact is seen as a challenge (talk to any inner-city kid or adult), it is not hard to see why they would react like this. HOWEVER, they ARE being paid millions/year to put a ball through a metal hoop. Self control should be the first discipline and it is not much to be asked. The Pacers are NOT being unduly penalized for beating up on fans. It has to end or the fans will decide the future of sports. Thugs should be kicked out of the system not just for the future of the sport, but for the safety of those paying tickets and, ultimately, the players million$. (If it was not the end of the game when most of the fans had left, Artest would have been on the receiving end of a pummeling.) But it is not just about the money. The actions of the players say as much. Sports figures come from diverse backgrounds. It is not logical to say that just players with rough/disadvantaged backgrounds behave poorly. Artest and company can't manage their heads. Anyone remember the fight between Ohio State (I think) and another college basketball team in the early 70s? There were no signs that they were inner-city youths with a chip on their shoulder. Hearing ex-players defend those guys was sickening. They are a little too haughty for respect, IMO. We can live without millionaire sports figures just fine. The local kids' games can be just as exciting. Great for those who can excel as atheletes and make some money along the way. But let the fans down, and you are finished. The NBA recognizes this and has responded appropriately. Go find work doing something else with a similar attitude and you will be fired for a lot less. A little conformity never hurt anyone.
  16. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=61381&item=5733734449&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW for a pair of JBL L110 speakers. Okay, I KNOW this is NOT the JBL forum, but these speakers sold the first time on eBay for $427 from my recollection. The high price was probably due to the rare original blue cloth grills and great condition. When I ship speakers, they are wrapped with 1" pink sheet insulation and floating in plenty of foam peanuts in a sturdy dishpak box from a storage business. The seller had some rare classics and they are now worth less than half their current selling BIN price. Just be sure to give your packing preferences when buying eBay items. What a waste of time and investment.

  18. I just noticed today that the time stamp for posts is east coast, where I am. It used to be an hour behind, denoting Hope, AK zone, I presume. Does the world now revolve me or did Klipsch change something in their servers? BTW, there are some good posts this weekend, mine excluded.

  20. Does that include Comcast cable internet, exclude cable internet, or do you have to subscribe to Comcast cable internet to get that rate? I find Comcast to sometimes be a little less than straight with their "offers." I think I remember that a rep once told me that you have to subscribe to cable internet to get HiDef. I could be wrong. I don't see Comcast giving away $5/month and giving away installation. Something does not sound right. Ask more questions, if you have not already.
  21. I have read that the Eico HF-12 integrated can be used as a mono amp by using the TAPE OUT jack as an AMP IN. I am experimenting with a pair of these right now, hooking them up to my newly acquired Dynaco PAS3. There is a loud screech from one of the amps and I am trying to track down the problem. (Waiting for tubes to cool.)
  22. Shun Mook Mpingo disks are still off my chart. I give him credit for being "first to market." I think he is still ONLY to market with those things. And his "power tube resonators" also stand quite alone.
