  1. Hmmm. Both in outstanding condition. Both sold by powersellers. Similar but unique. There are a lot of brokers out there. I'm a-watchin' these ones. This is too coincidental. I presume they have already seen each others auctions (if not planned them). Regardless, I would like to hear some LaScalas. I am fishin for some Heresys now. Got tubes again but no room for big footprint speakers.
  2. I have experience with bosses. DON'T tell you boss they are there. You are THE MAN. THE MAN must find out to whom he must speak in order to quietly unburden the owners of these "liabilities." Heck, offer to "take them off their hands." The minute you offer to buy them, there could be a suspicion that they are valuable. If they want you to pay for them, you can then tell them that there are tube radio hacks who enjoy old stuff like this and you would like to "tinker" with them. I'd be on these like a cheap suit. Your conscience is speaking to you. Your conscience must be disciplined. YOU are the Master.
  3. In the wrong hands, those kind of things could be very unsafe. Just let me know where they are and I will unburden their inventory of old dusty stuff like that antiquated vacuum tube radio gear. They could be fire hazards and/or cause injury to anyone who just innocently plugs them in. Well, at least you could try that line on them. Just make sure you talk to a person who would understand your concern for personal safety. And make sure you get an "excess" ticket or whatever you call them there. Only proper disposal of fragile old electronics will mitigate a safety liability.
  4. I am not an expert, but I kind of like the idea of leaving a couple of shelves empty and accessible from the back for trying new gear. That is not everyone's cup of tea but I like to experiment with yard sale finds, etc. I have a 2-source, 3-speaker selector that allows me that option. I am finally feeling somewhat satisfied with my setup so far, allowing my kids to have their game machines, three video sources (I have TWO AV source selectors), and my little corner with TT, pre and amp on a, get this, Bretford printer stand. Yeah, printer stand. It is short and solid, and I just landed a perfectly cut piece of 1.25" rose(?) granite for the TT base. I don't have much space to fiddle with but I get a lot of mileage from it. It is really makeshift, but I have multiple media optionsCD, Two VHS, MD, cassette, vinyl, PS2, XBOX, SNES, Dreamcast, and whatever you may plug into the external front source of either selectors (both JVC's). I will never have a professionally finished HT room. Media changes to fast. I have several old Audio/Video Interiors magazines. I cannot imagine what these folks spent on their gear and installation. But, after 10 years, the game has entirely changed. Looking through a Feb '97 edition, it is comical to see the amount of money spent on "cutting edge" technology. Now those same folks would look stupid bragging about that same gear. A 42" Mitsubishi Hi Res CRT rising out of a faux blanket chest at the foot of the bed? PU-LEEEEASE! The only area to stand the test of time, IMO, is 2CH audio. Long live 2CH. Long live the analog benchmark.
  5. It's obvious when an expert answers a question. How many audio forums have original master craftsmen carefully setting straight the young and careless? Anyone have a signature HDBRbuilder edition? Thanks for being here. (How about a post-your-pic thread of HDBR labels?) Your posts are always thorough yet concise. Much appreciated.
  6. Can't you just put the amp on the bottom shelf if you are unsure of safety? That way, you could support the bottom shelf as heavy as you feel comfortable. I built recessed shelves in the basement for my CD collection (okay PART of my collection) using the the adjustable rails nailed into a routed groove (Colter's dado). Their sturdiness will depend on the thickness of the side panels onto which you are nailing the rails and size of nails/screws you use. But an 88 pound gorilla? Yea, I would like that sitting on the base so you could support the base shelf as heavy as you want since it won't be seen. Are you going to leave the rear open or curtained for servicing from the back?
  7. It's obviously hard to pick out matching shoes. And you definitely want to wear shoes when stepping into airport rest rooms wearing that, um, ensemble.
  8. I presume they are taking page from the custom rageget a known expert to restore to beyond original and sell at a premium. I like the concept. On ebay I saw an auction from a custom-mod shop known for complete blowouts of vintage Ford Mustangs. Absolutely incredible reincarnations of known classics is their specialty. This is a custom shop that takes what seems to be abandoned Mustang hulls and totally remakes the vehicle into a new hot rod. But what you end up with is a Mustang that is anything but a stock Mustang. The winner watches the process online. I guess the same is true here. If the customizer can churn out four or five per month, that is good money. Heck, I can't even solder! (yet!) The Fisher Doc is a story unto himself. He has more work than he can handle and charges a premium while customers wait months for their loved ones to return home. But what they get is worth the wait. These guys retain a dying talent.
  9. For his sake, I hope it is unrelated to any flooding the midwest has seen recently.
  10. Get an e.p.t. pregnancy test for your keyboard. It seems now to be missing a period. (Sorry. Couldn't resist.)
  11. White Van sighting...sort of. Stopped at one of my favorite second hand stores on the way home. Spotted a pair of "Audiofile" speakers. Yea, spelled like that. One look and I thought, WHITE VAN. Sho'nuf a quick Google tonight turned up white van whitey scam speakers. I have seen lots of cheap speakers but these were pathetic knock-offs of contemporary designed slender tower cabinets. I am sure some studio lighting could make them look as good as any hi-end speakers out there, but these were jokes up close. THEN, on my way out, I see this guy buying them!! $99.99 for the pair. I wonder if his wife (assumed married) will be able to hear that these are J U N K. I thought about an intervention, but, well, he could use the lesson: Caveat Emptor.
  12. So trawling CL for Cornwalls worked? I saw your post this AM. Congrats.
  13. That happened to me when I sold the white Cornwalls. Guy showed up after he assured me the price was fine with him. He seemed nice and respectabl. He auditioned the CWs, made a couple of comments on the age showing on the woofer surrounds, and asked if I would accept less. I felt insulted. We got along great until then. (The ad was accurate. He had no argument there.) We haggled a little and then I was glad to see him go. I like deals as much as anyone and I actually got the speakers for less than advertised myself but that was BEFORE I went to see them and AFTER hearing that they were painted white. I decided to sell them only due to the profit I made and that I was not ready to commit to them as permanent system speakers due to their size and my lack of proper amplification. But if I EVER see a pair for $25 like someone else, "I call DIBS!" regards, Cornwall-less.
  14. It's none of my business what this "audiophile" is up to, much less how he is able to afford it. No criticism is meant at all. I found it when doing a Google Images search for turntable stands. Afterall, we get a lot of good common technology from lofty science endeavours like putting a man on the moon. Enjoy. http://www.goodsoundclub.com/Playback/MyPlayback.aspx
  15. A couple of guys in a white van tried to sell me oven doors once.
  16. Well, I would like to say my Optimus CD-3400 with some high end digital DAC, but I only have the CD-3400. This little thing IS quite amazing.
  17. Drive an extra five miles and you can have a genuine Teac cassette to make that a complete classic system. Here is a pic but mine has the original plastic lid for the top.
  18. Too bad. The Academy PLUS Quartets make a nice sounding home theater system. Also, I saw this system on eBay.
  19. What are Cornwall size speakers besides Cornwalls? Got my interest piqued.
  20. You have records of what has transacted. He stole from you. Follow up with police. I would be happy to do a drive-by. That area of town is, as Gary said, not so good. Next time anyone wants to conduct business through any portal, post it. If we act as agents for each other, there is little chance for these kind of hoodlums to scam a forum member. Tell prospective sellers/buyers that you will send "Tony" for the merchandise/money at a neutral place. Everyone knows "Tony." I presume we all know each other somehow. With those checks in play, we all win. Good Luck and Godspeed.
  21. Just for kix, http://www.psaudio.com/articles/listening_room_1.asp
  22. Geez, Gary. I have heard of dumpster diving, but... Just kidding. I have done my share. I have been to Marriottsville. There is this this special wagon for electronics. I was tempted to just sit there and watch like a buzzard. Given the number of tech jobs in the area, it would not surprise me to see some good old gear in there. It is all about timing. I had one other opportunity for one of these old Mag consoles but the manager wanted too much money$30 I think. I should've pulled the pin. I paid $30 for this one. The amp cleaned up real good. I am going to mate it with my old PS Audio preamp tomorrow (in my spare time ;-( ). Fix up my old Thorens TD-125, hook up my Dynaco A-35's (or Advents, or whatever I have left), and spin some old Creedence. Sometimes I wish for those Cornwalls back but they were so hard to set aside when I did not feel so "horny." I am getting into the yard salin' mood. A yard-salin' friend says he sees big old speakers all the time. They are probably nothing more than old RTR's or Fishers, but he says he sees Klipsch often enough to get me out on the prowl.
