  1. I've read this whole thread, including some great poetry, and I think some of you are instigating Don and being just plain a**holes. Maybe there's a history here that I don't know about, but still . . . So what if he wants to try a new speaker. I think the 13 driver mammoths are kind of quirky, but I'd try em out for a while, just like I have with lot's of different brands of speakers. His comment about the Cornwalls and a puddle of quality, I think was done in good spirit and a little teasing, which is why he used the word "puddle". If you read the posts leading up to that, it's a wonder he didn't react even stronger to all the criticism and teasing that was coming his way. So what if he didn't offer them to the forum first. I happen to think he set up a very fair auction. If you happen to live close enough to go get them, then bid on the auction, win, and go get them. What's the big deal? I've offered all kinds of equipment on this forum and have yet to make one sale. I don't presume that it's because the forum members are cheap, probably just not the right timing. I happen to notice that Cornwall prices are climbing right now, so if I were selling a pair, I'd be inclined to go through ebay first and only because I want to get current market value. There seems to be a lot of negativity towards others in a lot of threads on this forum. It gets tiring after a while. Greg
  2. Welcome, and please don't be embarrassed! We were all beginners at one time. I've been seriously involved with home audio as well as pro sound for over 20 years, but I've done more to improve the sound quality of my home audio system in the last year than ever, and mostly due to the help and advice that is given on this forum. The advice here is certainly worth every penny they charge! Cornwalls are a great speaker, made better with tube amplification and a really good music source. Like Tim said, give us more information and I'm sure people here will help. Greg
  3. I thought I'd post this again, in case anyone is interested. I don't know who is selling these and I know nothing about them. They were listed in a local paper. Greg Records: need to sell contents of closed record store. Some rare. All vinyl in great condition - country, jazz, classic rock, and more. Make an offer for the lot. There are anywhere from five to ten thousand albums! for more information. Must sell! $2,000.00 will discuss \ negotiate price with serious buyer! Concord, NH Contact Information 603-225-2870
  4. Hey, I didn't even notice that the reserve was not met on that one. I did a search and found that this is the second time in two weeks that it was listed and the reserve was not met. I wonder what Craig would have to say about the parts used in the "restoration" and the value of this piece. Here's the link http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3044736814&category=3284 Greg
  5. I'm convinced there is not just one "answer". I'm having a blast trying all kinds of different things. I can see having several different amplifier and preamp options all available to switch in and out of the system. I don't want to limit myself to a choice of rebuilding a 299C or a nice preamp, I want both and more! That's why I buy and sell so much of this stuff, it enables me to afford a lot of different things. The SET is very, very nice. I think I'll always have one or a monobloc pair at some point, but I do need more power for most of my music listening, and I especially will need more power when I build the next listening room. I was playing with some different setups the other day, switching between the SET and the McIntosh MC2205, and the Khorns and the Cornwalls. Lotsa fun! Just delivered the KLF30's today, the buyer was very pleased when he got them hooked up. I paid $700 as part of a package deal and sold them for $1050 plus $150 for delivery (3 hours away). Let's see . . . . that's just about enough profit for a very nice 299 rebuild! Greg
  6. Congrats! Did you see the one on ebay that was from Italy that sold for less than $200? It was supposedly completely restored and upgraded. I was supposed to set my alarm for 4 a.m. to snipe, but forgot! I thought that was a good deal with the upgrades. Greg
  7. Welcome to the forum. Another Cornwaller! What do you use for amplification? Greg
  8. Part of my thinking with this purchase is to experiment with bi-amping the Khorns. I've been getting information together on a good way to do this passively, or quasi-passively in anticipation of having time to play with it. Right now, I'm thinking SET on the horns with a modification to the SET amp that cuts out bass frequencies right at the input, and a pair of PP monoblocs on the bass bins with a simple, home-built, low-pass active crossover. I'm interested in trying out a lot of different things though. I think I may have Craig do up the 299C as an experiment. I also have a Dynaco ST-70 that I can try. I'll have more time this winter to get serious about the stereo system again. I've still got my Khorns to refinish in rosewood veneer, and I've got the Cornwalls to refinish too, among other projects. A couple of you guys act as though I've made a mistake to buy these Quicksilvers. Maybe you don't understand that for me, this is exciting to try out different things. If 8417's are as rare as you say they are, then I can't think of a better time to buy a pair of these to be one of the last to use up a set. It's sort of like when I bought my 928, part of my motivation at the time, was that they stopped making the 928 in 1994. So if I wanted to be one of the last to use up a 928 and get one with reasonable miles, the time was then. Greg
  9. I'm not planning on modifying them, just wondered if it might end up sounding even better. I've already seen 8417's for sale just with a little bit of searching tonight (no price, I sent an email), I doubt it will be a problem to pick up a set. I can test the tubes right here. No need to bother Craig, he's got enough to do. If I'm going to send anything to Craig, it's going to be my 299C. Greg
  10. Gilbert, try a software program like Paintshop Pro, it's very easy to resize and enhance photo's for use in emails, websites, and forums. Mine is a red 1989 with 75,000 miles. I think the stereo is worth as much as the car! Business hasn't been very good this year, so it's been sitting in the driveway all summer with a $2K transmission seal leak. I absolutely love this car though, even with it's expensive repairs. It's still in my top five most beautiful cars list. It's also a great driver, unlike a lot of other sports cars. I've done 13 hour trips in it, straight, and arrived fresh. The seats are a wonder. It's just a great machine. As far as I'm concerned, it's doing 50% of it's job just sitting there looking pretty! If the battery wasn't dead all the time, I'd go crank some tunes in it. My wife keeps prodding me to sell it. Greg
  11. Nah! These look really cool and the price is very reasonable. I'm quite sure I can get my money back out of them if I'm not happy. It's a EL34 upgrade, not EL84. Greg
  12. Darnit, I knew I should have consulted with the Dean Machine before buying these! $200 for a quad set sounds reasonable to me. But I still wonder if the EL34's modification might not be a better sounding amp anyway? The seller said he put 30 hours on them himself, but I don't know about the previous owners. I really don't care anyway, I'm going to enjoy them for as long as they stay lit, or until I move on to something else, or I modify them, or I find 8417's, etc... It's all in the journey. Greg
  13. Yes, I was just looking at the website. $250 plus tubes and shipping for the pair. Are there no 8417's out there? Ebay? Which sounds better, 8417 or EL34? Greg
  14. They look red for walnut. Could be the way the camera caught the light. The top few inches look very nice! I couldn't wait for the rest to download. Please resize your photos for us folks stuck on dial up. Greg
  15. No, I looked through all my tubes and couldn't find any 8417's. I'm prepared to make the modification to EL34's if necessary. I felt the price was right on these amps and I've heard good things about them. Greg
  16. Quicksilver Mono Amps with Phillips/Sylvania 8417 tubes. These have chrome chassis' which I love. The seller said that he spoke with Mike Sanders and he said that they never built any in chrome, so I assume that a previous owner had them chromed. I'm pretty excited about trying these out on my Khorns. After bouncing back and forth between the awesome power of the MC2205 and the incredible open, detailed sound of the SET, I'm thinking these mono's may land squarely in the middle. Hopefully they won't sound middle of the road! I'd enjoy hearing comments or insight into what I can expect from these. Greg
  17. Congratulations, you lucky dog! I was just a couple grand and a dirty look from the wife shy of scoffing those up. Greg
  18. What a great review Win, I can't wait for my turn! Gary, what's your schedule look like during the two weeks after Thanksgiving? I hope to be able to spend a few hours visiting during that time. I've got a lot happening those two weeks, NYC trip, Florida, Football, and picking up my Belle. Greg
  19. Just got home and this is a good opportunity to tell all of you about my gorgeous day boating around Vinalhaven on the coast of Maine. Gentle swells, 75 degrees, light breeze, sunshine, beautiful scenery, beautiful boats, lobstermen lining their boats up at the sales docks to unload their catch, walking around the town of Northhaven, 10 mile 30 knot cruise riding the waves back to Rockland, 2 hour nap, good food. What a day! Greg
  20. I think you would notice a huge difference in sound quality by upgrading to a better CD source. In my system, I noticed more of a difference in the upgrade to my MSB than I did when I switched from SS to tube. Buy used. You can always get your money back out if you don't think the improvement is worth it. Greg
  21. I bought a pair of Dogg Digital Audio speakers from a college student. They sounded aweful. Very cheaply made cabinets with cheesy black vinyl covering, cheesy metal grates over the drivers, really lightweight and cheap drivers. Terrible speakers. If I remember correctly, the tag on the speaker had a slightly different name, or spelling of the name as compared to the website. Why did I buy them? To sell on ebay and make $$. There's a market for everything. Greg
  22. Try lifting the ground from one of more of the components. Or try plugging all the components, including the subwoofer into one outlet just as a test to see if the humming goes away. You may have one or more components on an outlet that is wired to one side of your electrical panel, and other components on an outlet wired to the other side of your electrical panel. This can cause a ground loop. I was a live sound engineer for years, and we always made sure to wire directly into the electrical system at the club and ran all of the equipment from that same power source. Lighting went on the other side. Greg
  23. Is there ANY sound at all coming from the bass bins? Are we talking about a lack of bass, or no bass? Possible wiring problem when the speakers were replaced? Greg
  24. I concur, try to keep both system in the same room. I have KSB3.1's on top of my Khorns and as rear speakers. I built a custom cabinet around my big screen, with nice trimwork, and the center sits on top of that. I think it would be nice to keep the Khorns coupled to the floor. If building a stand, make sure it's very solidly built, and sits solidly on the floor. Perhaps build one that can be filled with sand. Another idea to get around the baseboards, would be to cut the metal of the baseboards back out of the way, and just run the copper pipe around the bottom of the wall around the corner. End caps can be put on the baseboards. Greg
