  1. See, this is where I start to get lost, but I like how it's starting to sound. So there are things called input coupling caps huh? Do all amps have these? Is it difficult to change to one that will high pass 400hz and up? I would have a friend of mine who is an electronic repair man do it for me. What a great idea, just a simple component instead of an electronic crossover with all the controls, plugs, cords, etc... I love the sound of this. Is there any reason why I can't cross the Khorn midrange lower than 400 hz? 250 hz would sound so much nicer to my ears. Thanks djk Greg
  2. Believe it or not, I've only heard Cornwalls once about 20 yrs ago at a hi fi store, but I don't remember my immpressions of them. I'm looking forward to hearing and seeing your system. I've only seen pictures of zebrawood . . . very nice. I'm re-veneering my Khorns in rosewood this fall/winter after boating season. Greg
  3. djk, this is really good information. I'm reading and re-reading to absorb it. Some of this info is just a little bit out of my league though. Just to clarify, when you speak of a input coupling cap/resistor, is that the same thing as what you're referring to making with a car stereo crossover? I assume this is in line before the mid/tweet amplifier input? I'm still confused by the hookup directly to the mid driver. If the speaker wires go directly to the mid driver, how does the signal go through the AA crossover to the tweeter? Jumpers? What is your reference to "fools" biamping about? Thanks, Greg
  4. Sounds fair! Say anything to justify the purchase. I'm going to have me some Corns someday. Greg
  5. Gary Selling three pairs of La Scalas, black-as is-a little rough, or fully reconditioned or re-veneered with exotic hardwood, or ??? Pair of Heresy's walnut Pair of KLF30's mahogany Pair of RB5's cherry 1 C7 black I know, that's more than 8, well some haven't arrived yet, picking them up this week. Greg
  6. There are 17 Klipsch speakers in my home/garage right now, 8 are for sale. Greg
  7. Thanks djk for the thoughtful response. I wish a few others would chime in on this Cary article though. Did you get a chance to read the Cary article? If so, do you agree with the statements made that the mid/tweet amp will not be working hard to reproduce the bass notes due to high impedences even though it's being fed a full range signal? This is a key element to what I'm trying to do, because I already am getting great sound quality from the 3 wpc SET amp, but not enough kick. If I'm going to still load up the amp in a bi-amp situation, then I'm really not going to get more power to just the mid/tweet, which is what I'm trying to do. If the amp is busy making bass and then it's wasted as heat at the crossover, I'm still using the amp harder than I want to. I only want it to be working hard to produce 400hz and up. I just don't know if this is possible without an active crossover. The Cary article, if true and accurate leads me to believe that it is possible. I'm not sure I understand what you're suggesting with hooking up to the K55. My amp doesn't have taps. do you mean hook the amp directly to the mid driver, or on the AA crossover? You said "change" the cap, not "add" a cap, which leads me to believe you mean change the one on the crossover. In this case I assume you mean to hook the amp to the crossover, but that's not exactly what you said, you said "run your amp directly to the K55". I'm finding the wording confusing. Also, if I just hook to the K55 with the cap, I'll have no tweeter. Sorry, I'm not familiar enough with these crossovers and electronic terminology, and need to have things spelled out very clearly, otherwise I ask a lot of detailed questions. Greg
  8. Does anyone out there have input about this article on vertical bi-amping. This is the link to the article: http://www.caryaudio.com/articles/bi_amping.shtml In particular, this is the part of the article that I'm most interested in learning more about: "The woofer (or multiple woofers) will exhibit lower impedance as they go below their respective self-resonance (Fs) frequency. The resonant frequency will be considered the lowest usable frequency of the woofer in the system for this discussion. As the bass notes go deeper below Fs, the woofer will tend to drop lower in impedance. These dips can call upon the amplifier to deliver more current in the lower registers. If the driving amplifier needs only to produce current in these registers it will have more control and usable power since the high frequencies going through the amplifier are looking into a very high impedance, many times on the order of 20 to 30 ohms. The amplifier will simply throw out voltage in these out of band frequencies without the need to deliver current and in turn power. The same occurrence takes place with the midrange tweeter crossover system. As low frequencies enter a tweeter midrange crossover network, the amplifier looks into a very high impedance that will not pull down the amplifier. In simplistic terms, the amplifier channel that is feeding the midrange tweeter network will only be delivering any appreciable current when the frequencies are in the mid to high frequency range." If this is true, I could use this same theory with a conventional bi-amp setup, without using an active crossover, AND without putting undue strain on my SET amp to produce bass frequencies when hooked up to just the mids and tweeters on my K-horns. Does anyone follow what I'm gettin at here? SET amp on my mids and tweets, and my big SS on the woofers, without the "coloration" of an active electronic crossover in line. Traditionally, the thinking is that the SET is still going to be working hard to reproduce the full spectrum, including bass frequencies. So in order to take the "load" off the SET, the bass frequencies must be rolled out before the signal gets to the amp. But if what this article implies is true, then this really isn't the case, because due to higher impedences, the amp really isn't "seeing" a big load when it's hooked up to just the mids and tweets. Greg
  9. Sorry, I can't offer much in the way of advice on which DAC's to purchase. But I can tell you that I wouldn't hesitate to buy used. There's very little that can go wrong with a DAC really, and people are always upgrading. I paid less than half of the normal new selling price for my unit. Greg
  10. I have several pairs of La Scalas and I live in Central Maine, so if you're anywhere near New England and would like to hear them, just drop me a line. glroberts@prexar.com Over the years I've owned at least 20 pair of La Scalas. I have a pair of cabinets that need to be filled also. What I did was buy an old pair of Heresy's that had bad cabinets. I paid $225 for the pair. I got the tweeters and the mid drivers out of them and I'm going to sell the rest of the components out of them. I'll just about have the tweeters and mid drivers free this way! My LS had the metal mid horns already. I would recommend you build a set of ALK crossovers for them. Woofers from the factory. Greg
  11. I have a pair of Polk SDA 1's among the twenty or so pairs of speakers that I have, and they are not anywhere near as nice as my Khorns. They do require a lot of power, but so do a lot of speakers. When you do put a lot of power in, you get a reasonably good quality sound from them, and they're loud and punchy. The biggest drawback in my opinion is that they had plastic wood-grained shelf paper on them. Yuck! I took that off and re-veneered them with teak and an oil finish. Some new grill cloth and a little detailing, and they make a nice pair of speakers. I'll be selling them soon, not nice enough to be taking up the limited speaker space in my home. I enjoyed them while I had them though. Greg
  12. Hi, No, I don't think the effect was enhanced by the tube amp. I notice as much of a difference with my McIntosh SS amp. In fact, I'm more satisfied than ever with my SS because of the DAC. I'm getting much the same detail enhancement, wide soundstage, and open midrange with the DAC and SS amp as I did when I first tried the tube amp. Like I said before, I was surprised by the level of improvement that I got when I went to a quality transport and a separate DAC. Greg
  13. Welcome. Are you listening to music with this system or movies or both? I have KSB 3.1's in a dedicated movie surround system and they sound really nice, but with music, I found they had a terrible midrange sound. Placement is very important with any system and can have as much to do with sound quality as anything. I recently upgraded my center channel from a KV-1 to a C-7, and this made a huge difference in the sound quality of my movie surround system. Greg
  14. Gary, please don't back out, it's just not a cool thing to do. Follow through on the deal. I've had sellers give me shipping prices that were much higher than they should be too. What is usually the case is they are getting a price from a local pack and ship company for the cost of packing and shipping, and then just calling it shipping. They may not even realize the quoted price is mostly packing charge. Looks like a go on the Belle, I'll keep you posted. Greg
  15. Burt, my experience was a little different. I was using a decent Denon player with my Khorns and tube amp when I bought a used MSB DAC with Nelson upgrade. I noticed a distinct improvement in all aspects of the sound quality from the source. My system has never sounded so good. That's not to say that a one-box unit can't also sound just as good, but I wanted you to know that I think this outboard DAC really sounds wonderful. I also agree with Artto that there are a multitude of things that can make just as big an improvement in sound quality. But my system was pretty refined and tweaked before I added the DAC. My interconnects were in good order, my room sound is excellent, I have nice components throughout the system, things are tuned in pretty well, etc... Adding the DAC and a nice transport made much more of a difference in sound quality than I expected. Let me also add this, many of my cd's that I thought sounded fine on my old system, are not as nice sounding now. I think improvements to a system that are designed to bring out the actual recording as accurately as possible, reveal flaws in those same recordings. Greg
  16. I have a mint condition B&K AVR202 for sale. If you're interested, please send me an email and I'll send you pictures. It's flawless. Packed in double boxes ready to go. Remote, manuals, original box. Accepting reasonable offers. Please go to Audiogon or ebay and see what they're selling for. This is the nicest used one out there. Please check my ebay feedback; username: greg928s4. Greg glroberts@prexar.com
  17. Be careful, some Macs when bridged, don't put out any more power because the impedence doubles, or halves, or something like that. I found out the hard way. This is definately not what you are asking about anyway! Greg
  18. I would say the same, if you can get a good working pair of La Scalas for $1000 or under, you won't be disapointed. Make sure the cabinets are tight at the bottom of the bass bin, and make sure they have original type components. It's worth it to take the bottom off and check the woofers. Many La Scala owners are surprised to learn that someone changed the woofers at some point along the line. Greg
  19. I don't know who got those, but I think they got a steal. It takes a special person, room, and temperament to have a system like this. It is a huge sounding system. Not necessarily hi fi. Probably not hi fi. But I think it would be really cool to have a full MCM setup. Greg
  20. I'll help you out here a little bit. I would go as high as $1500 if I lived close enough to go get them. The cabinets are rough, and you don't know the condition of the drivers, but there will be non-Klipsch items that can be sold to recoup part of the cost, and the rest can be refinished and refurbished. What a system that would be in a living room! I used to have some of this MCM stuff when I was doing live sound. Greg
  21. I had a Rotel preamp about 10 years ago, and I was persuaded into trading it in on an Adcom. I regretted it from the day I brough the Adcom home. The Rotel sounded much nicer to me. It was a little thinner sounding than the Adcom, but much clearer and more pleasant overall. I was surprised by the significant difference between the two. Greg
  22. I think it's a great idea, but don't you think we're all going to post in the 2 channel forum or the Home theater forum to let everyone know about an item we have in the BST forum? Probably. Greg
  23. The 299C that I have for sale does not appear to have any separate controls for a center channel. Greg
  24. Hey Frzninvt, check this one out. I know it's only a 200b with 12 WPC, but it says in the description that it's been rebuilt. With Klipsch Heritage, I think 12WPC might be just right. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3031565956&category=3284 I have a 299C that I'm selling if you're interested. It works, but probably needs NOSValves hands in it to really make it nice. I'm in Maine, come see and hear it if you want. I can send you pictures. But I think that one on ebay might be a pretty nice unit, depending on what happens to the price in the next couple of days. Greg
  25. Pretty nice huh?! These horns and drivers came out of a pair of Acoustic PA horns. The cabinets had a crossover and no less than 6 piezo tweeters in each! I got them with a whole bunch of stuff pretty cheap, knowing that I could sell the horns. Didn't know anything about the drivers though. As far as I know, the adapter bracket is exactly how Acoustic made them. The construction of the mid drivers looks just like a K55V. Is it just that it has a different diaphram? Would a replacement diaphram for a K55V work in these? Is a K55V from an old pair of Heresy's the same as was used in the Khorns? Thanks for the info, Greg
